New town banners for Cromwell A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE

CENTRAL OTAGO

The design brief was to create a set of new street banners that capture some of the unique qualities associated with the Cromwell Basin but link to the Central Otago regional identity – A World of Difference. The result is three simple yet powerful designs that have a sense of timelessness. The colours are inspired by the region’s strong seasonal colour palette and uses the spring green, autumn orange and winter sky blue.

A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE

The banners were designed by Cromwell graphic designer Allan Derrick with input from Regional Identity Manager Shirley Howden.

RAINBOW RISES AT MOLYNEUX PARK The Night ‘n Day Rainbow Run coming to Alexandra on Sunday 2 October puts the ‘fun’ at the front of ‘fun run’. Based on the colourful celebration of the Indian Holi Festival, the Night ‘n Day Rainbow Run involves participants running and walking

Sport Otago and Sport Central, there will also be Rainbow Runs held in Dunedin and Oamaru, and for the first time, Balclutha. Sport Otago Business Development Manager, Aaron Joy said “What greater way to celebrate the beginning of spring with friends, family, and work colleagues than by getting completely covered in bright colour at the Night ‘n Day Rainbow Run.” The event is suitable for people of all ages and levels of fitness. Children aged 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Ticketing details are available at www. sportotago.co.nz. Numbers are limited so book now, get yourself a white t-shirt to see the full effect of your Rainbow Run, and we’ll see you at Molyneux Park on Sunday 2 October for a start at 11.00am.

a 5km course around Molyneux Park, and being brightly decorated as they go. The colour is provided by a food grade, non-toxic powder, which washes away easily. Similar events are held throughout the world in cities such as Paris and Vancouver, and this is a chance for Central Otago people to take part in this fun event locally. Runners and walkers will ‘receive’ a fresh layer of paint powder at intervals around the course, and by the end of the event, they will be a picture of blue, yellow, green, purple, and pink. Cromwell Community Board Profile

IT’S YOUR PLAN

Alistair Hamilton

Cromwell, Pisa Moorings, Lowburn and Bannockburn - you will all be receiving a Cromwell Community Response Plan in your letterbox. A big thanks to the Cromwell Neighbourhood Support group for delivering these. The plan is tailored to your area’s local hazards and risk. It provides information, advice and direction on what you should do before, during and after a major disaster. Hang on to it. We encourage you to fill out the household emergency plan page to help you ‘get ready to get thru’.

Land, Lake & Local Business. My wife Jackie and I have lived in Cromwell for the past 15 years bringing up our children.

Local emergency service personnel, community group representatives and community leaders were involved in the plan’s preparation. It is the first of a series of plans that will be rolled out across Central Otago.

We run Cairnmuir Station and own the local Pharmacy. I have a keen interest in the community and its continual growth. I intend to bring a rural viewpoint to the board along with an understanding of the challenges businesses face in the region. I also have strong links to the land and have concerns over weed and pest management in the area. As a regular user of the lake I feel maintenance and control of the quality of our waterways is essential. That’s me. Land, lake, and local business.

New town banners for Cromwell

Cromwell Lions Club

[Cont’d from front page...] The blue banner is inspired by the iconic Sugar Loaf and is an expression of the symmetrical hill shapes that you see. The shapes could also be reminiscent of the river banks of the Kawarau and Clutha river and old gold mining ventures. The orange banner is a representation of 'Old Cromwell' - a link between Cromwell's past and its future. The third banner is an expression of the wine and horticultural industries in the Cromwell Basin. The regimented lines across the landscape representing the rows of vines or fruit trees seen throughout the basin. Cromwell Community Board Chair Neil Gillespie said the Board was excited about seeing the banners go up. "They are a fresh and modern representation of our piece of paradise. We hope they make our locals feel proud and visitors enjoy the vibrant welcome they deliver."

OVERWHELMING SUPPORT FOR NEW EARLY LEARNING CENTRE Willows Early Learning Centre is locally owned and operated by Kelly Spittle, Cheryl Minehan and Sally Cameron. Willows opened their doors to the Early Childhood community on the 16th May this year and have been overwhelmed with the support that they have received so far. Kelly, Cheryl and Sally recognised that there was a need for anotherEarly Childhood Centre in Cromwell to cater for the many new families moving to the area and especially those working full time. With more and more people commuting to Queenstown on a daily basis they have now extended their opening hours from 7.30 – 6 pm Monday to Friday that allow for the travel.

a large outdoor natural environment and three separate inside learning areas to allow children to develop at their own pace. This Saturday Willows will be holding an Open Day from 10 am to 2 pm. The team welcome families and people in the community to come down and visit to see what they have to offer.

Willows philosophy is all about developing positive reciprocal relationships with children, family/Whanau. Being able to provide a home away from home with a safe, warm and caring environment where diversity and inclusive education is supported is very important to the Willows team. The past four months have seen the Willows enrolments grow, which they believe is a result of having flexible hours for families,

That’s right, images won’t fade because they are imbedded directly into the paper. So now when you need photos printed, just remember to first download the TransPix app which wirelessly connects to our kiosk and your chosen photos can be transferred for printing. Options for prints: • Standard 6” x 4” prints (these are 30 cents each) • Panorama Prints 8” x 36” (if you are looking for a frame we will send you to Creative Framing) • Canvas prints are up to 60% off during September • Collage, enlargements and prints on novelty gifts – you name it, we’ve got it! NEW COLLEGE HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES Last year at the College we instigated a Sports Hall of fame and Roll of Honour. The idea was to celebrate the success that former students from the college have had in their sporting achievements. Inductees need to have represented NZ at the highest level in their sport. Last year we inducted Belinda Colling (Netball) Rob Sangster, Chris Sangster (Ice Hockey). At this Tuesday’s Hall of Fame celebration we inducted Sam Smoothy (Freeride Big Mountain Skier) and Ben Blanche (Slalom & Giant Slalom Special Olympics Skier). Sam showed the students some video’s of his crazy runs (google Sam Smoothy Andorra free ride) and spoke about his time at Cromwell College and the life he now leads as a professional skier. Ben Blanche thanked the College for getting him up the mountain as a student and sowing the seeds of what is now his passion. He is off to the Special Olympics World Games next year representing NZ in his skiing events. We then inducted Josh Smith (BMX) and Inia Logan (Golf) into the Roll of Honour. This is for current students who achieve at National Level in their chosen sport in their age grade. Josh was placed 4th at the BMX Nationals in the Cruiser class as well as having a #4 ranking in his age grade. Inia has been a member of the NZ under 19 Golf team. Across the Bridge in Bannockburn Cromwell: Owen Marshall, master of the short story, poet Brian Turner and non-fiction writer Mary Hobbs will provide the literary inspiration for this year’s Across the Bridge in Bannockburn event, beginning September 28. The trio will give readings at the Bannockburn Hotel at an ‘Essentially Central’ literary forum on Saturday, October 1, one of the organisers, Jan Hawkins, said. “The discussion, facilitated by Robin Dicey, will focus on the importance of conserving Central Otago’s unique character.” The fifth annual Across the Bridge in Bannockburn event, facilitated by Cromwell Community Arts, runs until October 2 and includes exhibitions, wine tasting and competitions aimed at challenging people’s creativity, she said.

“There’s lots of new stuff this year. It’s all about getting people out to Bannockburn but it’s also for the locals to just get together and have some fun.” A highlight would be the return on Wednesday, September 28, of the Reel Life films showcasing remarkable historic footage of rural Otago and Southland. “They showed some of these films, from as early as 1913, in the lovely old historic woolshed at Kawarau Station some time ago and people have been requesting a repeat ever since.” Bannockburn Hotel was hosting a ‘Budburst Festival’ on Sunday, October 2, with blind wine tasting and build-your-own fascinator competitions. “If you make a fascinator that can burst into bloom somehow, there is a special prize for

that.” The popular Banny Beanie event will be judged this year by artist Alan Waters, felter Bev Muir and former seamstress Janet Middleditch. It will be accompanied by a textiles exhibition at the bowling green and the artists of Bannockburn will display work at Cairnmuir Station woolshed throughout the event, Mrs Hawkins said. There is also a Historic film evening, beanie competition, wine tasting, a performance by a brass quintet, a Scottish feast at Carrick Vineyard, craft market with children’s entertainment, guided rambling with Gordon Stewart and a day-long photography workshop with Tim Hawkins. Jan says tickets will be available from Cromwell i-site from mid-September. Enquiries to hmcp@xtra.co.nz or Ph 027 229 8307.

Have piano, will travel It’s a heavy undertaking to tour a programme of music for piano and cello around New Zealand. Re-creating the intimate atmosphere of a salon concert at nineteen venues around New Zealand means that former Wellington City organist, Douglas Mews and well known NZSO & chamber music cellist, Robert Ibell have to lug a whole vanload of gear around the country - including the piano! The duo are performing their programme of virtuosic works from the early Nineteenth Century by candlelight in St Andrew’s Church Hall in Cromwell on Thursday 22 September and the Athenaeum Hall, Arrowtown on Friday 23 September under the name ‘Hammers & Horsehair’. Both concerts start at 7:30. The concerts are part of a nationwide tour taking place in houses, churches, halls, hotels, a winery, and even crematoriums, from the Hokianga to Dunedin.

with them, along with a good supply of candles. Tickets for the Cromwell concert (which include a light supper) are available at the Cromwell iSite. Tickets for the Arrowtown Concert are available from the Queenstown iSite, the Queenstown Events Centre or online from Eventfinda.

Douglas and Robert will play works by Beethoven, Mozart, Romberg and Breval on instruments that date from around the period when the pieces were written. “We’re looking to create a special atmosphere,” said Douglas. “The candles are part of that, but we’ll also be chatting with the audience as if we were playing in their sitting room at home. The old instruments and playing style are key aspects of it too. People will be able to hear the music much as it would have been heard by audiences when it was written two hundred years ago.” “The piano we’re using for our tour is very special,” said Douglas. “It’s a Broadwood square piano, made in England in the first half of the Nineteenth Century. Not only does it look unusual, but it has a wonderful history, having spent well over a century in the Aro Valley where I live. The two of us on our own can just manage to get the piano out the window of my house and into the van.” Robert’s cello also has an interesting background. Made in the Eighteenth Century, probably before Beethoven was born, it came to New Zealand in 1940 with Greta Ostova, a Czech escaping the Nazi occupation. Greta became a founding member of the National Orchestra (which became the NZSO), later passing the cello on to her student Judith Hyatt who then handed it on to Robert. “It’s pretty special to be the third generation of NZSO cellists to have this wonderful instrument, and I’m really looking forward to using on the Hammers & Horsehair tour, playing it alongside a piano with its own intriguing history,” said Robert. As well as transporting the instruments, Douglas and Robert will be carting chairs, a beautiful wooden music stand, lamps, and costumes

'Meet the Election Candidates' Public Meeting

Monday, September 19th, 7.00pm (sharp), Golden Gate Conference Centre Cromwell and district voters are invited to a public meeting to meet candidates in the local body elections. • • • • •

CODC Mayoralty CODC Councillors (Cromwell Ward) Cromwell Community Board Otago Regional Council (Dunstan constituency) Central Otago Health Inc (Cromwell ward)

Each candidate will give a brief presentation followed by questions from the floor. Please arrive early so the meeting can start on time. This is an open public meeting. All welcome. Organised by Cromwell Lions Club and Cromwell Rotary Club as a community service initiative. Enquiries to: Greg Wilkinson Ph 445 1599

If it seems too good to be true… A man in a movie once described the American West as a place where “everything that isn’t you, is trying to kill you”. While that is probably not entirely true here in NZ, what is entirely true is that just about everything that isn’t you, is trying to get money out of you. Now of course, some of these endeavours to deprive you of your wealth are completely legitimate: retailers of goods, providers of services and – to a lesser extent – the Government. Increasingly however – and as I hope you are already somewhat aware – there are much darker forces at work. Commonly known as scams, these Machiavellian enterprises range from the overtly simple to the impressively complex. Some examples are as follows: 1. Unsolicited callers offering to help you with the problem you did not know you were having with your computer 2. Unsolicited letters offering to buy shares from you……cheap

12

3. Unsolicited letters telling you that you’ve won a prize in a competition you never entered 4. Unsolicited emails from foreign government officials requesting your assistance with the transfer of large sums of money 5. Advertisements for goods that don’t exist And of course, there’s my personal favourites: Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and Trump University. Many of the first scams that appeared on our existential horizon were comparatively simple affairs. Nowadays they can be incredibly sophisticated and very difficult to perceive if you are caught unawares and/ or don’t know what to look for. And they are often targeted at the more vulnerable members of our community. While we lack sufficient room on this page to go into greater detail, allow me to pose the following food for thought:

1. Think about all of the times when you’ve actually had a problem with your computer. On any of these occasions, has someone called you unexpectedly to offer you assistance with said problem? 2. If you were having trouble getting large sums of money out of NZ, would you email some random in a foreign country and ask them for help? 3. How likely do you suppose it is that an official in a foreign government is going send you half a million dollars – or indeed, any amount of money at all? I would humbly suggest that it is perhaps about as likely as our friend Mr Trump being given the keys to Mexico City. If you think that you or someone you know may be – or may be about to become – the victim of a scam: talk to your lawyer. Jeremy Callander @ Checketts McKay Law Limited

Neighbourhood Support

“Keeping Our Community Strong”

Cromwell Community Response Plan Neighbourhood Support recently delivered copies of the Community Response Plan to residents of Cromwell, Lowburn, Pisa Moorings and Bannockburn. This plan is tailored to your area’s local hazards and risk. It provides information, advice and direction on what you should do before, during and after a major disaster. We encourage you to fill out the household emergency plan page to help you “get ready to get thru”. If you did not receive a copy of the plan, please feel free to call in and get one from the Resource Centre or the CODC. A friendly reminder: • It is helpful to mailbox delivery people if your mailbox is functional and clearly numbered. • A number of mailboxes are overflowing with mail. If you are unable to clear your mailbox regularly, please ensure you make arrangements to have this cleared on your behalf or perhaps place a “no circulars” sticker on your mailbox. Houses with mailboxes which are overflowing are more likely to be targeted by burglars. • Please ensure your dogs are secured on your property. There seems to be an increasing number of reports of dogs which are roaming the streets and at times following people or acting aggressively. Any nuisance dogs should be reported to the Council on (03) 440 0056.

Together we can help keep Cromwell a safe and caring place to live, work and play! Want to know more?
