Janine Stewart Hi there, my name is Janine and I’m a young, aspiring architect. I currently live in Arlington, VA, and I am currently looking to relocate to the Orlando, Florida area. However, my story starts in Trinidad. There, I observed the rebirth of beloved historical buildings and a city building boom all within the context mountainous landscapes and close access to the sea. This fascination with the transformative effect of beautiful, functional spaces made me want to create that experience for other people. My passion for architecture keeps me curious and excited to learn, create and effect positive change wherever possible. I intend to continue along that path by learning as much as I can to make the biggest impact. I would love to continue that journey at your organization - please contact me at the information below if you’re interested in that prospect. Thanks!

Richmond Theatre

Project: A theatre for medium scale dramatic productions is proposed to further activate the Shockoe Bottom area of Richmond, Va. Chrysler Campus

Project: The project brief outined the need for an annnex to the the existing Chyrsyler Museum, that would house special collections exhibits. The design needed to react to the context of the area and activate the nearby arts district by creating a campus environment that was all controlled by the Chrysler Museum. One or more buildings could be designed to facilitate this, and there was freedom to choose sites for different buildings within a specified region.

The main goal of this project was to create a series of spaces and experiences that would help knit the ‘Chrysler Campus’ together and give pedestrians pleasant and varied spaces to activate the area, while fulfilling program requirements. The overarching concept of this design was connection. It consists of two buildings: a special collections museum and a mixed use building. Both buildings contain transparent transitional gateways that link the buildings to the communal outdoor spaces that connect them.

Spaces to Connect with Humanity

Spaces to Experience Autonomous Learning

“Humanism is about personal autonomy, moral responsibility, and about solidarity with humanity. - Wiel Veugelers. The humanistic pedagogy aims to allow kids to experience autonomy and govern their own experiences and education. Autonomy gives them a sense of independence and control over their own development, and forms the internal core of the individual to which all other components respond. In this design, the courtyard represents the sense of autonomy present in every individual. It is the core off of which all other spaces, and specifically spaces for connection, are linked. The other major aspect of humanism is connection with other people. Surrounding the internal courtyard core are the spaces that encourage interaction with others. These spaces include the library, the art/ eurythmy room and the cafeteria space where kids are allowed to communicate, collaborate and learn from their peers.

Site The test site for this project is located along the Maracas Waterfall Trail in Trinidad. It is a tropical rainforest setting and a sloped site that leads to a waterfall. This location also has very few human interventions past the road leading to the trail. This design will include small structures that will located be in the understory layer of the rainforest.

Claim Buildings should “touch the ground” as lightly as possible, and integrate with the natural flows and cycles of the ecosystem. To achieve this, they should be designed as ‘Autonomous Living Systems’.

Curvy Cone Concept This concept is a marriage of geometry and the soft organic shapes found in nature and is naturally good for drainage. It contains a large opening which looks downhill and maximizes the view for optimal visitor experience. The structure is made of primarily organic, naturally derived materials such as bamboo, wood and plant based fabrics. This design incorporates holistic experience, structure, and system integration as the pillars of design.

URBAN ROOMS

CIRCULATION AXES

The design proposal for the Centre Mayol region site included 3 main design interventions: the Place de Port d’Italie, the Place de Mall and the Stage. Each of these urban rooms are interconnected to stitch the area together, promote walkability and to activate economical and recreational activity. Some of the major additions are the two facing buildings of the Port d’ Italie which reduces the large scale of the open space to a more human scale. This makes the spaces easier to navigate, and adds areas for social and business activity. On the other side of the Port D’Italie, a stage was added to celebrate the ramparts, provide recreational activity and draw pedestrians from further out of the city to the mall and surrounding businesses.

The Place de Port d’Italie, is enclosed by an existing historical building, a line of storefronts and 2 newly proposed mixed use buildings. A small water feature will be added to center the space and restaurants will be added, with outdoor seating to activate the space.

The Stage is an addition to the project that makes use of an existing historical rampart and “hole in the urban landscape. It adds a flexible space for performers and community gatherings so that it becomes a social hub. Additionally, water features are added throughout to guide pedestrians through this specific space and the overall space as a whole.

Sketches Montpellier, France

Andrews Villas - Montbello, Co The master plan of this development includes 2 single family homes, 28 duplexes and 17 rowhouses. The main road to be added provides easy access to interior lots and is easy to navigate. This plan also includes a pedestrian path that links the houses to an exterior roadway and the site’s main feature: a communal social space in the middle. This feature can serve as a gathering space, playground, or a community garden among many other possibilities.

Zoning

Single Family

The site is located in the S-MU-3 district of Denver, CO. Zoning analysis was conducted to see the best way to maximize on the number of lots on the site, and maintain a high standard of design and living experience.

The preliminary designs for this project include 3 options for duplex layouts 2 options for row house layouts and one option for the ranch layout. This allows some variety and opportunity for choices which, will be an asset during pre-sales. These homes are currently being developed to combine traditional and modern styles touches of architecture.

This project is a facelift on an existing self storage building, with an accessory use office and apartment. It entailed upgrades to the exterior facade and roof of the building, but no interior work. I completed the full set of construction documents and details for all demolition and new work under the dupervision of senior architects.
