Chrysler Campus
Project: Design a gallery space for special collections exhibits from the Chrysler Museum. The designs needed to react to the context of the area and activate the nearby arts district by creating a campus environment that was all controlled by the Chrysler Museum. We were given freedom to design one or more buildings to facilitate this, and we were also able to choose our own site within a specified region.
Concept The main goal of this project was to create a series of spaces and experiences that would help knit the ‘Chrysler Campus’ together and give pedestrians pleasant and varied spaces to activate the area while fulfilling program requirements. The overarching concept of this design was connection. It consists of two buildings: a special collections museum and a mixed use building. Both buildings contain transparent transitional gateways that link the buildings to the communal outdoor spaces that connect them. Site Plan

“Humanism is about personal autonomy, moral responsibility, and about solidarity with humanity. - Wiel Veugelers The humanistic pedagogy aims to allow kids to experience autonomy and govern their own experiences and education. Autonomy gives them a sense of independence and control over their own development and forms the internal core of the individual to which all other components respond. In this design, the courtyard represents the sense of autonomy present in every individual. It is the core off of which all other spaces, and specifically spaces designed to encourage connection, are linked. The other major aspect of humanism is connection with humanity. Surrounding the internal courtyard core are the spaces that encourage interaction with others. These spaces include the library, the art/ eurythmy room and the cafeteria space where kids are allowed to communicate, collaborate and learn from their peers.
