PARISH COUNCIL REPO RT

REFLECTION, RESPECT AND LOOKING FORWARD Hello all and hope you have had a great summer!

TACKLING POOR BUS SERVICE To start my report I would like to give everyone an update on the very poor bus service we are witnessing at the moment. I have contacted Stuart Woods at Durham County Council Transport Services and he in turn contacted the Go North East Bus Company (this is the second reply we have received from the company, the first reply was very poor) their reply on reliability is dated 19th September 2019 and is below: “Punctuality on the M6 service is a little bit worse than service 30 – if I’m honest I’m surprised as I expected punctuality to improve as there is now more recovery time in the cycle than there was before (with 8 minutes in Lanchester) In the last two weeks we’ve only lost two trips on the M6 due to late running - one of which was late evening so must have been something abnormal. So whilst there may be some work to do on improving punctuality, I think that lost mileage due to late running isn’t occurring regularly”. We know that the issues are greater than

are suggested above, and DDC Transport Services know there is a problem as the bus company have acknowledged there are punctuality problems and are monitoring the situation.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE AFFECTED BY BUS PROBLEMS If problems persist with buses not turning up when scheduled, please note the time and report the issue as soon as you can on 03000 268523 or pass the information on to Burnhope Parish Council, who, along with your County Councillors and transport services are trying to get these issues resolved.

IMPROVING PLAY AREA Moving on, your Parish Council have given the go ahead to address play-bark and other problems in the play area at the bottom of the village (we realise that the equipment is old and outdated but until it’s possible to procure more funding we will have to make the best of improving what we have). Flower planting continued over the summer months and looked great, thank you Alan Gibson for your work in producing the end result.

IMPROVING CHRISTMAS LIGHTS From around September 27th there will be work starting around our Christmas tree area as we are having an electricity supply installed to power the lights on the tree rather than the battery power used in previous years. If the above work is completed (which it should be) it has been suggested that we have the switching on of the lights and a Christmas carol sing a long on Wednesday 4th December at 6pm then afterwards you’re invited to pop into the Community Centre for a warm drink or a glass of sherry so we’re looking forward to see you then. Regards Derek Coates Chair of Burnhope Parish Council Derek Coates

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR LOCAL POLICE We are now preparing for winter nights, at this time of year we usually see an increase in burglaries, please see some quick tips on keeping your property safe below.

• Keep windows and doors locked when you go out, even if

it’s just for a few minutes. We recommend you keep doors locked even when you’re in the house as offenders may still try to gain access.

• Make sure side and back gates are secure. • Be wary of sign of a distraction burglary, where more than

one person calls at your door, trying to dupe you into letting one caller in to burgle you whilst you are distracted by another one.

• Consider fitting an approved burglar alarm system. • If you go out in the evening, close curtains and use

automatic timer switches to turn your lights on when it goes dark. Set the timers so they go on and off at different times in different rooms.

There’s lots to enjoy at your Community Centre with something for everyone: Age UK hold a number of activities including exercise classes each Tuesday at 5.30pm - all ages welcome.

The Youth Club is always popular on a Friday evening from 6pm.

Burnhope Parent & Toddler Group is going from strength to strength on a Tuesday morning with parents and grandparents from the village and surrounding areas enjoying the sessions with their little ones.

Thursday morning is Coffee Morning featuring tea, coffee and cakes, all washed down with a good old natter. All welcome.

New Bingo Night From 7pm to 9pm each Saturday is Bingo night, so come along, enjoy and be lucky!

The Monday Club starts at 1.30pm each week and is always a vibrant afternoon with all welcome.

statements and passports out of sight; if no longer needed, carefully dispose of or shred these items.

• Consider keeping expensive jewellery, house deeds and other important items in a home safe anchored to the brickwork.

• Don’t leave garden tools outside, keep ladders out of sight and ensure sheds, garages and outbuildings are locked.

• Even when you’re at home, try not to leave accessible windows open at night.

• Christmas is a key time for burglaries, with many houses full of

new and valuable presents. Don’t alert burglars by leaving present packaging outside, put it all in your recycling box out of sight.

• Never give your keys to anyone you do not know well. Change • Consider using a fake TV simulator. It’s a flickering light that

reduced premiums for people with good home security, but make sure you lock your home properly and switch on any alarm; otherwise you may not be covered.

• Keep documents containing personal details such as bank

THE BURNHOPE WHEEL

The Burnhope Heritage Project is in full swing and the response to the project within the village and surrounding areas has been fantastic. Burnhope Primary School, members of various community groups and individual residents have actively supported and participated in the extensive programme of events on offer since the project’s launch earlier this year. Stalls at various events such as the Burnhope Summer Fayre, a history festival at Beamish Museum and numerous drop-in events held at the new Community Centre, the Methodist Church Hut and The Garage Bar and Grill have also generated interest. People often think their memories and stories are of no interest to others but this couldn’t be further from the truth so please get in touch or come and see us at a future drop-in for a chat. Currently a small but dedicated team of volunteers make up our research team

40 PEOPLE ENJOY BEAMISH The free community trip to Beamish Museum was also a huge success this summer. Over 40 people took part. We had a great time and were really lucky with the weather after a very wet weekend leading up to the trip!

GETTING THE KIDS INVOLVED Before the summer holidays, Class 3 and Class 4 from Burnhope Primary School took a trip to Durham Record Office. They explored the archives and completed their Discover Arts Award. We’re looking forward to presenting them with their certificates this term.

AFTER-SCHOOL HERITAGE CLUB We’ve also just started a free after-school club on a Tuesday and we really want to encourage older family members to come along and join in with the activities.

who each month are attending training and research sessions at the Durham Record Office or external research trips, most recently to the Durham Mining Museum and the Mining Art Gallery in Spennymoor. Some volunteers are even putting in extra hours as they delve further into the fascinating history of the village, particularly in relation to early geographical boundaries, census data, early newspaper reports, music and entertainment, school life and lesser known stories of Burnhope’s history.

Some of this research has already been used in the creation of Wednesday afternoon family activities which ran throughout the summer in the Community Centre. With support from some of our project volunteers, families made waggons, built a map-based replica of the village through time, painted heritage rocks which were distributed throughout the village and played exciting games such as Battle Coal!, Burnhope Census Bingo and Burnhopopoly.

COULD YOUR EXPERIENCE HELP YOUNG PEOPLE? There’s plenty more coming up over the next couple of months so please do join us. We’d love to find some more research volunteers and would really like to encourage older people to share their skills and memories with younger people in the village. If you think you might have something to offer and can spare a little bit of time, even just an hour, please get in touch. The project will run until December 2020, is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Durham County Council, and delivered by Age UK County Durham. For more information please contact Kirsty McCarrison on 0191 374 6560 or kirsty.mccarrison@ageukcountydurham.org.uk

Burnhope Heritage Project GET INVOLVED Every Tuesday: After-school club at Burnhope Primary School, 15.15 – 16.15pm. We’re looking for older members of the community to come and share their memories and skills. You can come just once or more regularly! Get in touch if you’re interested.

Thursday 10th October: Volunteer research group visit to the Durham Record Office. 13.00 – 16.00pm. We will learn how to best record our research, have a catch up with each other and then continue our work in the archives. Please contact us to let us know you’re coming.

BIG-HEARTED BURNHOPERS REMEMBER LOVED ONES

Renny’s Ramble raised an astounding £10,650! On Saturday 7th September, over 100 local people walked 10KM (6.5 miles) in memory of well-loved Burnhope man, Kevin ‘Renny’ Reynoldson who passed away on 26th April aged 66. Organised by Kevin’s daughter, Karen Reynoldson and her close friends, ‘Renny’s Ramble’ was set up to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support after the nurses looked after Kevin in his time of need. Walkers were invited to participate in memory of their own loved ones too. Family friend Broghan Cowell shared her delight when the amount raised was announced on Facebook, “I’m over the moon with the amount. It will make a HUGE difference to Macmillan. Brilliant charity very close to my heart. Well done everyone!” The sponsored walk started at Knitsley Farm Shop and ended at Diggerland, Langley Park. There were shorter versions for tired or little legs and buggies.

After the walk, the fun continued at the Cricket Club when some brave souls endured waxing and head shaving! Kevin’s son Michael and grandson Ben are pictured right raising yet more money.

Shopping Special Wednesday 30th October: Burnhope Heritage Project Roadshow at the Community Centre (afternoon), 13.0016.00pm. A very special drop-in event where you can see what the project has uncovered so far, speak to an archivist from the Durham County Record Office about family or local history, see the exhibition ‘Mining Durham’s Hidden Depths’, join in with a craft activity and have a cup of tea and a biscuit.

Thursday 14th November: Drop-in at Lanchester Library 10.00am-12.00pm. An opportunity to chat to volunteers, find out what we’ve discovered so far or share information and memorabilia.

Our volunteer Cindy Brockington has been speaking to older Burnhope residents who have lived in the village for many years, asking them about what shops they can remember on the high street. Although we’re not fully clear on the exact dates of all of the shops, we’ve now got a ‘memory map’ which will be on display at future events. Since 1850 there have been more than 26 shops in Burnhope, of 12 different types. Probably not more than 15 at any one time.

Ben Reynoldson and Dad Michael

In addition, the village was served by travelling sales carts and vans. Perhaps the most fondly remembered is Ada Rainbow’s sweet shop (pictured left) in a railway carriage in a corner of the cricket field “where she attracted children with many things sold for a penny.” At the opposite end of the scale was the West Stanley Co-operative store with its five Departments situated beside the cricket field, opened in 1904 and closed in 1982. We would love to hear your memories of these shops. People have told us fantastic stories about Ada Rainbow’s sweet shop in particular but we would love to hear more; photos of shops would be particularly useful. There are potentially still gaps in our information so do come along to look at the map so that we can incorporate your information!

We are now into the Autumn Term in school, and have welcomed pupils old and new at the start of the new school year. We said goodbye to our Year 6 children in July, and hope they are settling well into their new secondary school. We also said goodbye to Miss Fisher and wish her well. We have some new pupils who have joined us this term, and hope that they are now feeling part of our school family. Some of our new pupils have joined our lovely Early Years Unit which Nursery and Reception children attend. Children can start Nursery at the beginning of the term after their 3 rd birthday, and we offer both 15 hour and 30 hour places which are available now. It is always a good idea to fill in an application form so that your child can be added to our waiting list and we can notify you when a place is available. Applications can be made for Nursery in the school year that the child has their second birthday. Forms are available from the school office. We currently have places available, and are offering a Drop-In session every Tuesday morning from 9.30 am – 10.00 am. This is an ideal opportunity to come and see what goes on in Nursery, and let your child try out some of our activities. If you, or anyone you know, has a child not yet attending Nursery, please get in touch. We would love to see you. Our children undertake a number of assessments and statutory tests in the summer term in school. We are delighted to say that results in these tests this year have been really pleasing, reflecting the hard work of both the pupils and the staff who have worked with them. In 2019 we have continued to improve upon results and in Year 1 100% of children passed phonic screening. Achievement in reading is a very good indicator of success in later life and we are proud to get our children off to the very best start. At the end of KS1 we continue to be above national averages in reading, writing and Maths and by KS2 we are particularly proud of exceeding national averages in Maths. We continue to offer a free Breakfast Club every morning for children from Reception age upwards. This is still being supported by funding from Warburtons bakers, and from Kelloggs, and children can attend from 8.15 am each morning where they will have breakfast followed by some fun activities, preparing them well for their day ahead. At Burnhope School we think it is important to be part of the wider community, and have links within the local community. We are delighted to have close links with the Community Centre, and enjoy using their facilities for meetings and activities. We also have connections with both churches in Burnhope.

Our KS2 children recently attended the Harvest Service at the Methodist Chapel, and we have regular visits from Stuart and Claire Earl who deliver assemblies to the pupils. Donations from our Harvest Festival in school are taken to the local Food Bank, where our some of our older children are able to see first-hand how their donations help members of the community.

THE BURNHOPE WHEEL

We are also taking part in the Intergenerational Heritage Project, which is bringing together younger and older members of Burnhope Community. There are lots of activities planned throughout the area, in conjunction with Age UK, which you may have seen advertised, and we have an after-school club which is working on this project. Other after-school clubs include Sports, Cookery and Film Club, and clubs vary from term to term. Children are always keen to get involved in these activities, and our staff generously give up their time to make them fun. Very Exciting STEM Project

You may remember that in last term’s article we told you about an exciting project which was, at that time, still under wraps. Well, it is well and truly on show now! We were given the brilliant opportunity of building our own car, yes, our very own car. And not only that, some of our children were able to drive it. Working at North Durham Academy, we built our car, decorated it, and then took it to the Greenpower racing event at Gateshead Stadium. It was a lovely sunny day, and our children had great fun competing against other schools who had also built their cars.

During the summer term we achieved two awards. The first was the BIG anti bullying award for 2018-19. This is a national award which recognises our promise to prevent bullying. We also achieved the School Games GOLD award which recognises our commitment to school games and sport. Our outdoor play facilities are being very well used, and we are awaiting the construction of a storage building for all our equipment. This includes the waterproof clothing which our children wear so they can enjoy the outdoors in all weather. Unfortunately, this doesn’t last for ever, so we are currently fundraising for new waterproofs. We have a fundraising ‘thermometer’ on display in school, and are holding non-uniform days and other activities to try and reach out total before the weather gets too bad! The Friends of Burnhope School (FoBS) are a great support to us, and continue to fundraise to help provide extras for our children which would otherwise not be possible. They bought hoodies for our Year 6 children as a leaving gift in July, and hold regular coffee events and raffles to raise these greatly appreciated funds. We are always looking for more supporters – if you are interested please contact the school office.

A great time was had by all at the Burnhope Summer Fayre and Dog Show, held at the Cricket Club on August Bank Holiday Monday. In total, £1,044.50 was raised for Burnhope Partnership, which goes towards to print of the Burnhope Wheel (it is prepared by volunteers) and other small projects around the village.

We are passionate about enriching our curriculum and providing experiences for our pupils. In June 2019 our Year 6 pupils had the opportunity to visit London where they visited many historical landmarks and also got to experience a West End show – the Lion King (photos above) One of the most fun events in the school calendar is our annual wholeschool visit to the Pantomine each Christmas at the Theatre Royal Newcastle. This year will be the 4th visit and this is made possible in no small part, by the fundraising done by FoBS, which pays for tickets for every child in school. Apart from being an exciting Christmas trip, it offers our children the opportunity to experience a professional show in a beautiful historic theatre, and they all love it….oh yes they do! This year they will see Beauty and the Beast. At the end of September we were lucky enough to be visited by Olympic Pole Vaulter Sally Scott who talked to children about her experiences in sport and worked with each class on fitness. Our pupils took part in fitness session with her and were sponsored by parents and friends. It was a very inspirational visit, and also raised funds for sporting equipment for school. Burnhope Primary School may be a small school, but small is beautiful, and here our pupils receive an excellent well -rounded education in a happy and caring school. Burnhope Primary School “Learning to play, discover and achieve together”.

The surgery has signed up for Autism Hour which was on Thursday 10th October 2019 at 12pm. The surgery dimmed our lights, turned off our music and helped staff learn about Autism. Staff also be made donations to the Autistic Society and any donations on the day were really appreciated. As always the practice thanks all our patients for donations received.

Military Veterans The Haven Surgery is extremely proud to be a pilot practice for Armed Forces Veteran Friendly accreditation and we are committed to caring for those injured in service, in a way which reflects the Nation’s moral obligation to do so. When service people leave the armed forces, their healthcare is the responsibility of the NHS and the UK government has pledged to support veterans with priority NHS care (please read on in the next paragraph for more information). It is highly important that these people register with a GP on discharge and to inform the practice they are registering with, that they have served. TWO TROPHIES FOR BURNHOPE

EVERYONE WELCOME!

At the end of the cricket season our 2nd XI team celebrated by winning the Johnson Coates Trophy and the Amos Lowing Trophy.

On August Bank Holiday Monday the cricket field was filled with people and dogs when the Burnhope Partnership held its annual Summer Fayre and Fun Dog Show.

This year ended sadly with very few league games played due to the weather conditions. Heavy rain showers had either caused games to be cancelled or abandoned. GETTING THE YOUNGSTERS INTO CRICKET With thanks to David Selby holding his regular Monday evening cricket sessions we have seen a great interest from the youngsters attending. We hope to see them all again next season. LEEK SHOW WINNERS This year the Cricket Club Leek Show winner was Stuey May with Billy Brunton in Second place with “Best in Show” leeks. It was once again another great show with some fine leeks entered into the competition.

Then on Saturday 7th September we had over 100 footsore walkers return from the sponsored walk from Knitsley to Langley Park, organised by Karen Reynoldson and her friends to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. Over £10,000 was raised for this very worthy charity with raffles, collections and sponsors all adding to the money raised. In the evening a waxing and shaving event was held, and a singer provided entertainment while the walkers soaked their tired feet – “Well done to the organisers and everyone who took part”. Our thanks to go our ground staff for all their excellent work and not forgetting our tea ladies!

A junior section of Burnhope Cricket Club is coming! Selby Coaching is a fully insured, DBS checked and 5-star rated (Yell and Facebook) coaching company which is bringing cricket to the young people of Burnhope. This will include three teams to begin with Under 9’s, 11’s and 13’s. If your child is aged between 6-11 from the beginning of September 2019 and they are wanting to come along and learn a new sport please message our team leader, David Selby on either: Facebook – Selby Coaching Email – info@selbycoaching.co.uk Or call – 07903 681189 Huge thanks to all that came to our Cricket Funday on the 21st September at the Cricket Club. Your generosity helped raise a grand total of £651.18. AN AMAZING start to get the next generation of equipment for the children to have the very best chance of success. Why do we believe this will work in Burnhope? We believe it will work as there are too many children on the streets bored, nothing to do apart from play the same games day in day out. To find out more or to get involved contact David who will in turn discuss all queries and ideas with the newly found Junior Committee at the Cricket Club.
