INUJIMA HEALING Course Option Studio 3 | 9 Weeks Instructor Asami Takahashi & Alex Sun

01.

Inujima is a small island off Okayama, Japan in the Seto Inland Sea. With an average population age of 75, Inujima faces the problem of depopulation and a declining economy. The island has thus been used as one of the several platforms for the Setouchi Triennale where artists and architects collaborate to introduce public art on the island in hopes of attracting tourists to rejuvenate the island’s economy. However, the static nature of these attractions coupled with the lack of accessibility and amenities has done little to improve the situation, with visitors spending an average of only 2.5 hours on the island which is insufficient in allowing them to gain a comprehensive experience and understanding of the island. The project thus capitalises on the island’s lifestyle dependency on the natural environment and proposes a Nature and Wellness Tour inclusive of accommodation, workshops and opportunities to experience traditional Japanese practices with the guide of locals on the island. It aims to utilise concepts of hospitality and cultural exchange to provide a more immersive experience for visitors such that they are better able to connect with life on Inujima.

Hosted by a local resident, the soap making workshop introduces the basics of soap making using ingredients grown at the gardens and greenhouses at the guest house.

Throughout the three houses, there is a common emphasis on the interaction with nature to resemble the island’s locals’ way of life which focuses on their natural environment. To achieve this, the guesthouse features the insertion of several greenhouses and courtyards with skylights to bring in natural light to what had previously been dark and grim interior spaces whilst retaining the remainder of the external walls. These internal courtyards also provide opportunities for the blurring of boundaries hence privacy amongst guests. Overall, the guesthouse is designed to allow guests to ‘live in a garden’ where there is more spatial interaction in the way in which workshop participants are able to pick their ingredients from crops growing in the multiple green areas for use in the workshop space which is in the middle of the house, and is easily accessible to both indoor and outdoor plantations. The house encourages guests to interact with nature organically by breaking down the boundaries between the indoors and outdoors.

The bath house retains the roof structure unique to the old sewing factory and plays with the use of transparent and translucent materials in readapting the building into a bath house. Solid walls are replaced with glass at the front and back and frosted glass at the sides to bring in light into the space, as well as to open up the interior to the surrounding greenery. The use of frosted glass provides a level of privacy whilst allowing for interaction with the natural environment as silhouettes of the surrounding trees wraps around the space while users immerse in their bath. The bath house is open to both the island’s locals and visitors to encourage interaction and cultural exchange.

The tea house retains much of the existing structure of the the old house and focuses on the breaking down of its external walls whilst maintaining its original boundaries to open up the interior as much as possible to the surrounding landscape.

A courtyard is also inserted to act as a buffer for privacy between the tea rooms and a skylight is created to bring in natural light to lit the space. The open corridors also creates multiple routes for serving such that views and serenity are not interrupted. The tea house is open to all visitors, though priority is given to tour guests at specific hours. Tea ceremonies and traditional kaiseki meals are prepared with locally grown crops and hosted by locals to encourage a more personal and sincere cultural exchange experience.

02.

By alternating solids with translucent and transparent environments, mixing elements of solid and nature, the villa allows two strangers to work in solitude but with the ambient awareness of the other person that is in the house. Taking House NA by Sou Fujimoto as precedence, the villa is designed for an intention opposite to the idea of ‘living together’ and is meant for two acquaintances that are merely staying together temporarily. With programs mainly designed more specifically for a researcher and artist respectively, the spaces within the villa promises them the luxury of having their own working and reflection spaces despite being in close proximity to each other. Views are framed such that they do not intersect with another, and only glimpses of the other person - in the form of silhouettes and shadows of the other person casted into one’s space - are caught as they circulate around the house. The tree and translucent layers that line the inner surfaces of the building act as a buffer between the two occupants, obstructing immediate interaction between them should they otherwise choose to be together in the same space.

House NA is a house of 21 planes with widths in the ratio of 2:1:1. The edges of the planes flush to one another along the x and y axis without overlapping, creating a setting for a program on its own. Due to the absence of walls, public programs are placed nearer to the edge, setting the house back from the street and planes are staggered to demarcate boundaries. This results in a tree like assembly of planes which can also be seen from the patterns in circulation paths that branches out from a main path, allowing dwellers to move separately despite being in one single room.

While each room provides occupants with their own personal space for a specific activity, the courtyard acts as an axis for encounter and circulation. Should occupants otherwise choose to occupy the same space, the courtyard becomes the only space that is entirely public in the house; balconies that extend from individual rooms also have isolated views, providing occupants with private reflection and recreation spaces.

Incorporated to transform the central vertical axis into a circulation courtyard, the tree which the villa builds around also provides shade from the sun and rain as occupants move from one space to another, and changes the dynamics of the space as it ages with time.

THE GRID Course Core Studio 3 | 11 Weeks Instructor Teo Yee Chin

03.

The project aims to create a high density urban housing typology suited for the transient community in Paya Lebar, catering to small families, foreign expats and high rentals that are prevalent due to the uprising business hub. The site is nestled along a fine dividing line between the old shophouses and newer developments. Hence, whilst being a part of the newer development, it aims to reflect certain characteristics of the old on an urban scale, building on an extension of the neighbouring shophouse grid. There is also an attempt at recreating concepts of a closely knit community in the intentional agglomeration of units and shared balconies between neighbours aimed at bridging different communities which is an important social aspect of housing in contrast to the short term and transient nature of housing and communities in the Paya Lebar area.

Shophouses line the street where a mix of foreign and locals exist in a transient community. Small businesses are set up and rentals are prevalent due to direct access to the business district.

Conglomeration of communities gather on green spaces and the park connector is often utilized over the weekends by foreigners and locals alike.

Mixed use buildings have sprouted recently as part of plans to turn the area into a business hub and its strategic location at the intersection of two MRT lines results in bustling activities.

Upcoming mixed use buildings are under construction and Paya Lebar Road becomes increasingly prevalent as the dividing line between the old and newer, high rise buildings.

UNIT AGGLOMERATION

PROGRAM AND CIRCULATION

Openings as a result of the unit agglomeration are strategically misaligned to allow ventilation, daylight and privacy for units in the middle. They act as communal spaces on every level, where double volume openings are more public and welcoming of neighbors across the floor while single volume openings encourage more intimate interaction between immediate neighbors.

Commercial units surround the open plaza on the bottom three levels while residential and communal spaces occupy the upper levels. The subtle moments of narrow spaces between the row of shops recreates the effect of a shophouse alley, encouraging the public using the programs to cross paths and engage with one another.

Expat rental units have shared balconies that encourage social interactions with adjacent neighbors. Especially for expatriates who are living alone, this unit type allows for building of companionship.

The n duplex units have two bedrooms and are agglomerated to provide semi private spaces that would allow children’s play to spill out to a common area between two units, which can be overlooked by both units’ common area. Despite it being a communal space for residents across the level, the spatial arrangement can encourage more intimate interactions between two immediate neighbors.

The top and bottom duplexes are agglomerated such that they result in double volume spaces that act as a communal area for residents on the same floor. These spaces can be overlooked by all four units, encouraging interaction and community living. 05.

The brief asks for a design of an artificial art gallery that also houses a cafe, lecture theatre and office space. Programmatically, the building is organized in the form of blocks that are connected after pushing them at an angle that sets the building back from a main junction in a densely populated area to give something to the city. This creates welcoming spaces that encourages pedestrians to come into the space despite the mixed private and public uses.

Since the site stands out as a green space amidst the high rise buildings, this project also retains this green space by featuring a courtyard that stands in the middle of the programs where people can come together to interact. Overall, the separate blocks that combine to form one connected building space resembles its aim to formulate an integrated space where people can come for both work and play.

SITE | ORCHARD ROAD

Exploration of visual fields to influence the way in which the building is designed, hence capturing attention from peripheral vision to draw crowd into the building. Faces of the building that are largely seen by the crowd along Orchard Road are pushed back to give something back to the city, creating a more welcoming space.

Entrances to the building are also positioned at visible corners where traffic flow is the highest - in front of the main traffic junction and in line of visibility of pedestrians coming from the bus stop.

The space is defined as an outdoor shower in a villa situated amidst a dense forest, allowing occupants to take respite from the urban landscape. Put together to allow for the cohabitance of natural sunlight, greenery and openness, the space takes advantage of its lush green surroundings, mixing elements of solid and nature to create a relaxing outdoor shower experience that is unique to the natural environment to allow one to start, end or even reset their day.

The objective of the studio is to familiarize with the works of Palladio and to examine why the design principles are applicable today and explore ways of applying them now - amidst current challenges.

No study of architecture is complete without some grounding of Palladio, his influences in architecture throughout history and the era he is from. From Italy to the USA and from England to Singapore, ‘classical buildings’ are footnotes of the buildings of Palladio - his villas, churches, palazzos and even his bridges. The assignment asks to analyze Palladio’s buildings, namely the Basilica Palladiana and Villa Emo, in both 2 and 3 dimensional forms through graphic analysis and model building to examine issues like scale, proportion and - amongst others - hierarchy.

The Golden Ratio Palladio’s works are strongly based on symmetry, perspectives and values of the formal classical temple architecture of the Ancient Greeks and Romans. The proportions of the rooms and facades for his buildings often follow The Golden Ratio, and are his guiding principles in achieving the harmonious hierarchy of spaces.

The project asks for a bridge designed to hold a 100kg load, of which its structure was to be computationally tested with Karamba prior to the fabrication process. Bearing in mind that the project combines concepts of design and computation, the team decided to create a design that balances both the aesthetics and functional aspects of a bridge, relying on modularity in its fabrication process such that the bridge can be easily assembled and dismantled.

From the Karamba model, the wire should be under tension and most parts of the beam should be under compression.

Using wood with dimension 80mm of width and 21mm of thickness, experiencing 0.40N live load and 1.442N pretension of 4mm thick wire, a suitable utilization analysis of 24.4% is obtained.

Data is a ubiquitous part of our daily lives; the actions we do generate data both in ways we are aware such as paying for something with a credit card, but also in ways that we are unaware such as being recorded on CCTVs while walking down the street. Whilst data captures the material and actual of human actions, it often falls short trying to adequately represent the social and emotional factors in human interaction with others and space.

This workshop thus aims to use Japanese culture, history and design as a catalyst for research to attempt in a personally derived, but rigorous fashion, record and generate novel spatial data beyond traditional maps and plans, and enable insight into the social activities which make a place spatial.

The most characteristic point of Kyoto city is its grid pattern of streets. Its city’s streets are constructed by North South lines and crossing o East West lines. The nature of this urban planning technique has resulted in potentially dangerous 90 sharp angles and blind spots at numerous junctions that affects both pedestrians and motorists. To understand the social and physical consequences to these spaces, the team investigated on the placement and position of mirrors - a highly prevalent feature as we walked down the streets - drawing relationships between their frequency to population density and accident rates in the area.
