JANET LI WORKS 2021
HELLO! My name is Janet Li, I’m currently a Masters student at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. I am interested in the narratives of a building and the site they sit on. I am fascinated in how architecture is influenced over time and human interaction. Outside of architecture, I enjoy sketching, cooking, and exploring my city. zhen.li98@outlook.com (647) - 226 - 0128 Toronto

LOST ARCHIVE
The Lost Archive is where you go to find the forgotten. Created in choreography with the old Crawford Street Bridge; a bridge that was buried intact along with the river it used to span. These pieces of history, their stories, and their remains are forgotten in the process. The Archive houses a collection of sounds of the past that we may have forgotten and overlooked. They are artifacts of their time, a piece of what can never be attained again. It is a place of pause, to remember what came before us that shaped the way we are.

LOST ARCHIVE
The Garrison Creek holds rich significance in the making of the City of Toronto. In a global urbanization phenomenon, small creeks and rivers were buried around the world to allow “room” for growth. These pieces of history, their stories, and their remains are forgotten in the process.

Residence at York is designed to build a stronger connection between the university community and the York community as well as providing a stronger student connection. The neighbourhood lacks programmed green spaces and retail which the new residence provides with skating rinks, fountains, and playgrounds. Core double atrium spaces connect the student dorm rooms to provide a pocket community that mirrors the intention of the courtyard. 21

Unravelled is an educational walk connecting a residential neighbourhood to the Grand RIver through the site of an old quarry. The path zigzags through the site unravelling histories and evolutions of the Grand RIver. As the river floods and vegetation grows, the pathway changes in appearance and function. It emulates the ever changing ecosystem of life which we co-exist in. The path features an outdoor classroom, community gardens, and an undulation of ramps and seats that echo the energy of the river. 27

THE CENTRE
The Centre is a place to have difficult conversations. Unlike a maze, with many choices and many paths, a labryinth has only one path in and one path out. The one in leads to the centre, and the one out leads back to the starting point. There are no decisions to be made, no blind alleys, and most importantly, you can see the path ahead. The labrynth does not inspire fear; it calms and allows slow, steady, reflection. The labryinth is a journey to the centre of the deepest self and back out into the world witha broadened understanding of who you are. 33

FOXIANGGE
Spring 2018, 2B With Courtney Lee, Weeney Lin, Owen Yang, Quinn Li Supervised by Val Rynnimeri Laser Cutting, Wood Working
Foxiangge or Tower of Buddhist Incense is situated in the Summer Palace near Beijing. It was built in the Qing Dynasty as a place of retreat and has been listed as a UNESCO world heritage site. The project totalled close to 3 months including research and construction. Parts are conceived through thorough examination of photos then laser cut. Precision with laser cutting is necessary to achieve the fine details.
RESONANT VESSEL
Fall 2019, 3B With Weeney Lin, Supervised by Jonathan Tyrrell Laser Cutting, Wood Working, Model Making
Resonant Vessel challenged us to create an architectural representation of an assigned music piece. Our piece was ‘Aria’ from the Goldberg Variations by Bach, as performed by Glenn Gould. Our Vessel takes the body of a bridge with varying pathways that reflect the contrapunctal form of the piece. It is an individual experience that may occasionally cross paths with another similar to the phrasing in the piece. 39

VICIOUS SEDIMENTATION, nt of INSIDIOUS LOOPS

Spring 2021, 4A
Supervised by Scott Sorli Photoshop, Illustrator
ur rmo
t y s
Vicious Sedimentation, Insidious Loops looks at injustice on the environment and what we might learn once we understand it as equal. Western society’s placement of value can be viewed on a moral expansiveness scale. Often sentience is a crucial factor in deciding concern. However, the idea the natural environment is its own entity is not new. Nature is not property, rather, it’s inherently valuable.

The Whitney Block Revitalization Project is a multi-phase restoration project. The scope includes interior retrofits and masonry restoration. I played a vital role as construction admin support especially working for the masonry restoration scope. I attended weekly site visits, drafted SVRs, SI’s, and coordinated with contractors and consultants. The diagrams above detail insights we found of the building’s construction as masonry was disassembled. 45
