Silver fireworks As IDEX this year celebrates its Silver Jubilee, 25 years after the first edition, the official opening ceremony was appropriately spectacular. First up on the programme was the UAE military band, followed by the Abu Dhabi Police band, both resplendent in striking uniforms and giving outstanding renditions. A colourful UAE cultural performance by scores of smiling youth kept the crowds enthralled.

Shortly before 11:00, the flags of all 96 nations participating in IDEX 2019 were carried into the stadium from both ends of the pavilion. Moments later the spectators were asked to rise for the entry of the high-level guests, led by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, VicePresident and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces. The UAE national anthem was played, followed by an impressive performance by the Armenian military orchestra, the guard of honour and a percussion band.

Smuggling arms by sea and through a hidden underground network of tunnels connected to a long-range missile site, the militias brought a range of friendly forces into action to thwart their efforts.

The dramatic demonstration involved the use of modern and advanced techniques, augmented by virtual reality, artificial intelligence (AI), robotics and satellite communications. The ensuing firefight involved a combination of ground, naval, air, security units and special forces in co-ordinated and synchronised

attacks. Their professionalism and competency soon overcame the militia threat, including the destruction of a long-range missile as it was being launched.

janes.com/idex South Africa’s Paramount Group (Stand 12-C15) is launching a brand-new variant of its Mbombe 4 (4x4) mine-resistant armoured vehicle here at IDEX. Displaying a striking new design, it is being described by the company as a “multirole, highly dynamic, mine-protected armoured vehicle” and, like all of Paramount’s products, has been developed using internal research and development funding to meet emerging export customer requirements.

Executive chairman Ivor Ichikowitz told the IDEX Show Daily: “Mbombe 4 was designed and developed for specific market requirements and we are extremely proud

African drive of the end result. The Mbombe 4 is world-leading in its class. We pioneered mine-resistant flat floor technology, which is central to the design of the new Mbombe 4x4 platform.”

Mbombe 4 features an allwelded monocoque steel hull, providing occupants with ballistic protection up to STANAG 4569 Level 3, while mine blast protection is to up to STANAG 4569 Levels 4a and 4b. The vehicle provides protection against a side blast

such as an improvised explosive device or roadside bomb equivalent to 50kg of TNT. An independent suspension system and air-operated differential locks front and rear provide a high level of cross-country mobility.

The quoted gross vehicle weight of 16,000kg includes 2,700kg of payload, which is fuel, crew, weapons, ammunition and other onboard equipment.

In addition to the commander, driver and gunner, four dismounts can be carried in the rear troop compartment. For use

in high ambient temperature conditions, an air-conditioning system is fitted as standard (from +55°C in desert conditions to -20°C in winter conditions).

Mbombe 4 can be fitted with a wide range of turrets, including Ukrainian, South African and various Western-made systems. A wide range of optional equipment is available, including a central tyre inflation system, run-flat inserts, winch, fire detection and suppression system, CBRN, gunshot protection and vehicle location and tracking system.

The development of the Mbombe 4 now enables the Paramount Group to offer a complete range of wheeled vehicles, with the other two being Mbombe 6 (6x6) and the Mbombe 8 (8x8). n

Meeting the demand for skilled personnel As the UAE builds its high-tech industries, the demand for skilled personnel increases. Two academic institutions are highlighting their efforts to not only produce highly employable skilled engineers and technicians, but also help in driving new technologies.

The United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) has more than 15,000 students and is a research-intensive institution that undertakes a range of research and development projects. Being highlighted at IDEX are a 3D tele-operated robot that can be controlled remotely by an operator wearing a smart suit, and Smart Autonomous Transportation Systems. Also on show are a system in which drones co-operate with ground vehicles to respond to disaster situations, and a GeoDrone that can be used for asset inspection and site survey.

Also present at IDEX is ADVETI (Abu Dhabi Vocational Education and Training Institute), which has a range of technical schools and technology/scientific institutes throughout the Emirates. n

BY DAVID DONALD Speaking to the IDEX Show Daily just prior to IDEX, Saab said the GlobalEye multi-sensor airborne early warning/multirole surveillance programme is “on schedule” in the build-up to its entry into service with the UAE Air Force and Air Defence. The UAE became the launch customer for the GlobalEye just over three years ago, announcing an initial deal for two of the aircraft at the Dubai air show in November 2015. A third was subsequently added during IDEX in February 2017.

Also known as the SRSS (SwingRole Surveillance System), the GlobalEye is an adaptation of the Bombardier Global 6000 longrange business jet to the multisurveillance role. The chief sensor is a Saab Erieye ER airborne early warning (AEW) radar mounted in a ‘ski-box’ fairing above the aircraft’s spine. Additional sensors reportedly include a FLIR Systems Star Safire 380HD electro-optic turret beneath the forward fuselage, and a Leonardo Seaspray 7500E AESA radar in a large belly radome.

Having been rolled out in February 2018, the first aircraft performed its maiden postmodification flight on 14 March at Saab’s Linköping plant, where

the three airframes have been converted from ‘green’ Global 6000 airframes. The extensive nature of the modifications – encompassing structural and significant aerodynamic changes, as well as an expanded and re-routed cabling network – has dictated a major flight test campaign to clear the GlobalEye for service.

Soon after its initial flights from Linköping, which had proved basic aircraft system functions and aerodynamics, the no. 1 GlobalEye – operating under the Swedish civil registration SE-RMY – was deployed to Granada in Andalucia

for an exhaustive flight test campaign. The move to southern Spain was driven by the region’s excellent weather and the need to fly regularly to meet the contracted schedule.

SE-RMY has subsequently been put through rigorous system and aerodynamic testing, flying numerous test points with varying speeds, altitudes and loads. The primary aim of the trials is to validate predicted calculations made using computers and wind tunnel trials. The GlobalEye is fitted with its own instrumentation and recording equipment so that

no specific ground infrastructure is required to record gathered data.

This ‘orange box’ equipment will be removed prior to customer delivery.

While the aircraft remained in Spain throughout the late summer and autumn, test teams of between six and 10 personnel, including two pilots, have rotated to Granada every four to six weeks.

In December, the no. 1 GlobalEye returned briefly to Sweden, but has returned to Granada to complete its trials. It is scheduled to stay there until the late spring.

In the meantime, Saab achieved

a major milestone on 3 January this year with the first flight of the second aircraft, SE-RMZ. The aircraft is intended primarily as the mission systems test aircraft, and is to remain in Sweden for trials. Much of the system test work has been accomplished in a ground rig. The third aircraft has completed the major part of the structural modification work, and the one-tonne ‘ski-box’ fairing has been mounted. The aircraft is undergoing the fitment of systems in preparation for its first flight.

No delivery schedule has been announced publicly for the GlobalEyes, and in the meantime the UAE AFAD continues to operate a pair of ex-Swedish air force Saab 340 aircraft carrying the legacy Erieye system. When the new SRSS platforms enter service they will bring a dramatic increase in capability. The Erieye

ER S-band radar alone, with its gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductor technology, promises a 70 per cent increase in detection range against traditional aerial targets, as well as offering much improved performance against small, low-flying vehicles, as well as those with low-observable ‘stealthy’ characteristics. The Erieye ER also has a maritime surface detection capability.

On top of that, the Seaspray radar and electro-optic turret provide the GlobalEye with a powerful maritime and overland surveillance capability, including synthetic aperture radar imaging and ground moving target indication. With its array of sensors and communications links all being controlled by an advanced integrated mission system with five operator consoles, the GlobalEye offers a complete multi-intelligence

package that can ‘swing’ between roles seamlessly.

Basing the system on the Global 6000 also provides long endurance with a high dash speed capability should the aircraft be required rapidly in a certain mission area.

The platform’s business jet roots also make it a comfortable working environment for the crew, and it has size, weight and power growth potential to add further systems and personnel.

Since the type’s official marketing ‘launch’ in 2016, Saab has reported significant interest in the GlobalEye from both countries with existing AEW assets and those that seek the capability. The ‘system of systems’ can be scaled and tailored to meet individual requirements, and Saab can localise the system through the integration of existing national command and control datalinks and networks. n

BY RICHARD SCOTT General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc (GA-ASI) is highlighting the capabilities of its SeaGuardian unmanned aerial system (UAS) on stand 03-C34.

Building on the pedigree of the widely sold MQ-9B mediumaltitude, long-endurance UAS, the SeaGuardian is a derivative specifically optimised for persistent maritime intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR). The company believes that a more robust ISR capability would also allow regional forces to conduct persistent ‘overwatch’ around the Bab-el-Mandeb chokepoint and the Strait of Hormuz.

With a range of 6,000-plus nautical miles, SeaGuardian boasts endurance of more than 40 hours.

Electronics support for the UAE US technology company Leonardo DRS (Stand 06-B07 in the Italian Pavilion) has signed a teaming agreement with UAE-based International Golden Group (IGG) to provide support for the UAE Armed Forces on a variety of electronic and related programmes.

The company’s Land Electronics business unit is establishing an engineering and support facility within the IGG Industrial Park in Abu Dhabi, including the hiring and training of local technicians.

The agreement builds on a long-term relationship between Leonardo DRS and the UAE government.

The new facility will be involved in a range of new collaborative projects, including the integration of advanced communications systems for C4I purposes.

Another programme concerns onboard vehicle power supply equipment that can provide up to 120kW of mobile power. Such levels are required to operate power-hungry systems such as C4ISR systems, radars, mobile command posts and weapons systems.

BY DAVID DONALD Earlier this month, Bell Helicopter Textron was awarded a US Naval Air Systems Command contract worth $240 million covering the supply of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters to the Kingdom of Bahrain. The sale was notified to US Congress in April 2018. The request included the provision of AGM-114 Hellfire missiles and BAE Systems APKWS II laserguided rockets. The AH-1Zs are to be equipped with the Optimized Top Owl helmet-mounted display from Thales.

The Royal Bahraini Air Force

has operated the earlier-generation AH-1E/F/P Cobra for many years and maintains around 30, including training airframes, serving with two squadrons of the Helicopter Wing at Rifa’a air base. They are to be retained after the AH-1Zs have been delivered – a process that is expected to get under way in 2022.

The AH-1Z represents a complete overhaul of the Cobra concept. Also known as the ‘Zulu’, the Viper has General Electric T700-GE-401C engines driving a new four-bladed main rotor. The mission system is centred on a Northrop Grumman computer and

integrates two large multi-function displays in both fore and aft cockpits. The main sensor system is the Lockheed Martin AVQ-30 Target Sight System. The avionics system is essentially similar to that of the UH-1Y Venom utility attack/assault helicopter. The Northrop Grumman mission suite is also used in the AH-1Fs that have been upgraded for the Royal Jordanian Air Force.

Bahrain is the second export customer for the AH-1Z, Pakistan having earlier signed for 12.

The principal customer is the US Marine Corps, which has a requirement for 189 helicopters. ■

The GPM is a rugged, robust and lightweight inflatable boat constructed of high-spec Hypalon synthetic rubber to provide increased abrasion and ultraviolet resistance. GPM boats come in five sizes ranging from 3.8m to 5.8m and have a single point of inflation – the 5.3m boat can be inflated in just one minute.

According to Survitec, the GPM range has been developed in response to customer and user feedback from ex-marine boat specialists and other specialist military units. Designed for all insertion and extraction scenarios,

Devised and built by Survitec, the rapid-deploy tow is located at the back of boat in a built-in parcel and ready to deploy. It can be solely operated by the coxswain, who, as he or she drives past, pulls on the toggle and clips the tow to the stricken vessel before removing it from danger. n

BY CHRISTOPHER F FOSS Mobile Land Systems (Outdoor CP-232, UAE Pavilion) has confirmed that its new Viper (4x4) mine-resistant ambush-protected (MRAP) vehicle completed the gruelling UAE Armed Forces Summer Trials, which were hosted by the General Maintenance Corps. The trials lasted five days, during which the Viper successfully covered 1,500km over highways, sand dunes, soft sand tracks and rocky ground, with temperatures reaching close to 60°C, without any failure.

The Viper 4x4 MRAP is based on a welded steel monocoque, lowprofile multilayer hybrid V-shaped hull, which is claimed to mitigate any damage effects that result from an explosion under the vehicle.

Ballistic protection is according to the customer requirements, but is from STANAG 4569

Success in extreme tests Level 1 through to Level 4, while blast protection is at a base of STANAG 4569 Level 3a/3b.

Armour solutions include steel and composite.

It is fitted with independent suspension for a high level of crosscountry mobility and powered by a front-mounted 450hp diesel engine, which is provided with an

oversized cooling pack. Mobile Land Systems quotes a cruising range of up to 800km. Standard equipment on the Viper MRAP includes a fire detection and suppression system and a CBRN protection system.

According to Mobile Land Systems, the Viper can also be configured as an ambulance,

command and control vehicle, and reconnaissance vehicle, to name but a few. Various weapon systems can be mounted on the roof.

In addition to developing the Viper MRAP, Mobile Land Systems also converts commercial vehicles for security operations, including providing armour protection. â–

BY DAVID DONALD Last week the Lebanese Air Force (LAF) received its first batch of BAE Systems APKWS (Advanced Precision Kill Weapon Systems) laser-guided rockets. The delivery arrived in Beirut by US Air Force Boeing C-17 transport.

The APKWS acquisition, totalling 2,000 rockets, is covered

by the same 2015 deal that saw six Embraer/Sierra Nevada Corporation A-29 Super Tucano light attack aircraft being delivered to the LAF. The Super Tucanos will be armed with the APKWS, as will the LAF’s new MD Helicopters MD 530G attack helicopters. Preveze upgrade Turkish systems engineering and design house STM Savunma Teknolojileri Mühendislik ve Ticaret A.Ş.

(Stand B-050) is to lead the programme for the mid-life upgrade (MLU) of the Turkish Naval Forces Command’s four Type 209/1400 Preveze-class submarines.

Under the terms of the contract, signed with Turkey’s Presidency of Defence Industries (SSB), STM will take on the role of lead partner in partnership with Havelsan, Aselsan and Asfat.

The four Preveze-class boats were delivered between 1994 and 1999. STM says the four submarines will re-enter service in 2023, 2024, 2026 and 2027. n

Slipway systems make an entry

BY RICHARD SCOTT Palfinger Marine (Stand C-021) is showcasing its range of slipway and stern entry systems at NAVDEX. Safety considerations mean that small boat operations using conventional launch and recovery solutions are often constrained by sea state and weather conditions.

According to Palfinger Marine, the company’s slipway systems eliminate all use of hooks, painter lines, arrester wires or other mechanical connections, so reducing the risk of hazard during the launch and recovery of ‘daughter’ craft.

Slipway systems also offer very fast launch and recovery in emergency situations.

Slipway/stern entry systems are customised, and available with

quad- or single-wheel drive, or boat cradle. Tilting wheel units automatically adapt to the hull shape of the craft entering the slipway. They can handle craft with different hull shapes, propulsion systems and weights (including unmanned surface vessels and autonomous underwater vehicles).

Systems can be designed to

handle multiple craft, and perform transfer of a craft from the slipway to a stowage position on the mother vessel.

Ease of use is another discriminator. Systems require only a single operator, and are intuitive to use, enabling vessel personnel to become proficient in a short space of time. n

JLTV enters US Army service

BY CHRISTOPHER F FOSS Oshkosh Corporation (Stand 03-B25, US Pavilion) has brought its latest Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV), which is now in production for the US armed forces.

JLTV is the long-term replacement for some of the currently deployed AM General High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWV), with the US Army already equipping its first unit with this vehicle.

It is available in two-door and four-door variants and in the

utility, general-purpose, combat weapon carrier and heavy gun carrier configurations.

JLTV can be configured with many weapon systems depending on the mission or threat environment. An optional turret supports standard weapon mounts for 7.62mm manned or remotely operated machine guns, or for a variety of cannon and tube launched missile systems. In addition, side- and rear-mounted weapons from a wide variety of manufacturers are seamlessly supported.

is fitted with an Australian EOS R-400S-MK2 remote weapon station, armed with a Northrop Grumman M230LF 30mm lightweight ‘Chain Gun’.

The JLTV is currently in low-rate initial production under a contract for 16,901 vehicles awarded in August 2015, with

production running at about 15 vehicles a day, but this could be increased to 40 a day if required.

A full-rate production decision is expected in the future.

In addition to being used by the US Army, the JLTV will also be deployed by the US Marine Corps and US Air Force. n

Safeguard your data The secure transmission of data and protection against hackers is paramount at sites such as company headquarters, data centres and small offices. Swiss company Crypto International (Stand 08-B13) is promoting a number of encryption units from its IP VPN family, which, it says, ensure that information travels securely between locations.

The HC-7825-200 IP VPN provides encryption for IP traffic of up to 100Mbit/s. Its full redundant, hot-pluggable power supply is designed to ensure highest availability of the encryption unit. The tamperproof unit comes with a built-in security module programmed with the customer’s

specific algorithm. It is suitable for data, voice and video transport via unicast or multicast IP VPN tunnels. The encryption unit offers full data integrity and minimal latency.

28 Soucy Defense (Stand 01-B60 in the Canadian Pavilion) is presenting its composite rubber track (CRT) technology, which it believes is ideal for integration into platforms such as the BMP3, M109 and MCV-80 Desert Warrior operated by Middle Eastern nations. CRT has already been operationally proven in conflict theatres, such as Iraq and Afghanistan, on Canada’s M113, the UK’s BvS10 Viking, and Norway’s CV90 vehicles. CRT is also integrated into a variety of armoured vehicles across different weight categories worldwide, including the Singapore Technologies Kinetics Bronco. It has also been demonstrated on the new Polish Borsuk IFV. According to the company, a recent trial conducted under a joint programme with BAE Systems on a Warrior IFV at the UK Armoured Trials and Development Unit at Bovington has exceeded all expectations. A new front drive sprocket and modified rear idler were the only modifications required to fit the new tracks. The

With durability and longevity in mind, the holster is manufactured entirely of engineering grade injection-moulded polymer to withstand high ambient temperatures. The holster carries a

minimum five-year warranty.

RHT has taken the modularity concept further by offering several carrying options. Besides high or low belt-mounting to suit the height preferences of individual users, fully adjustable for cant (forward or backward tilt), a mounting element is available to mount the holster to any surface inside a vehicle or aircraft – even under a desk.

The holsters are available in various military and lawenforcement colours, and unit badges can be moulded on, if required. Countering drone attacks

BY GÜNTER ENDRES DroneShield, a global leader in drone detection and countermeasures, is showing its latest product line – including DroneSentry, DroneGun Tactical and DroneNode – as part of the Team Defence Australia pavilion (Stand 07-C04).

The single-operator DroneGun Tactical (pictured) provides a safe countermeasure against a wide range of drone models. It allows for a controlled management of drone payload such as explosives, with no damage to common drone models or surrounding environment due to the drones generally responding via a vertical controlled landing on the spot, or returning back to the

starting point, remaining intact for forensic investigation. It allows up to 1km coverage, in a wide range of environmental conditions, from -20 to +55°.

DroneSentry integrates DroneShield’s suite of sensors and countermeasures in a unified platform deployable in permanent or temporary installations, incorporating RadarOne radar, RFOne RF detectors, and DroneOpt cameras.

DroneNode is a highly portable and inconspicuous counter-drone solution especially suitable for public events. It is also effective against swarm attacks.

The company conducts a significant amount of business in the Middle East, with recent

announcements including a multi-million dollar DroneGun sale to a major military force in the region. Drone detection for Oman

BY DAVID DONALD Radio frequency/microwave specialist Aaronia (Stand 08C18, German Pavilion) has been contracted by the Omani government to provide AARTOS drone detection systems at airports throughout the Sultanate. Working with R & N Khimji LLC, Aaronia’s systems have been successfully demonstrated in Oman, and are now installed at Muscat International Airport, making it the first airport in the world to have a publicly acknowledged operational drone detection system.

Unlike radar-based detection systems, which exhibit low detection and high false-alarm rates while causing some interference with airport systems, AARTOS is an entirely passive radio

frequency system employing artificial intelligence technology.

Depending on the individual system specification, AARTOS has a detection range of up to 50km, and can locate multiple drones operating across a range of frequencies. It also identifies the drone operator’s location, allowing security forces to apprehend perpetrators and to facilitate the safe landing of offending vehicles.

AARTOS can include a longrange camera for optical verification of suspect drones. Aaronia offers its RTSA Suite PRO software as an adjunct to AARTOS, permitting the display of a 3D map of the airport, as well as air traffic in real time.

While recent events at LondonGatwick Airport in the UK have brought the drone threat to safety firmly into the public eye, the

problem is already being addressed by several nations. Aaronia brought AARTOS to market in 2015, and is now developing the fourth generation of its product, which is due for release in the summer.

During 2017, more than 50 AARTOS systems were installed worldwide, and some 300 orders were received in 2018. The system has primarily been acquired by defence and security forces to protect national infrastructure sites such as power plants, borders, prisons and military airfields. It has also been used at VIP/political events. In September 2013, a small quadcopter drone approached to within a few metres of German Chancellor Angela Merkel during a political rally, illustrating the threat that such systems can present to VIPs. n

armour increases from 500mm to about 550mm. These enhancements have been achieved by improving the manufacturing process for the dual-mode shaped-charge anti-tank warhead, and by modifying the launch tube design.

Other characteristics of the weapon remain unchanged, including its effective range spectrum from 20m to 500m, operating temperature range of -46°C to +71°C and its ability to

be fired from enclosed spaces of greater than 15m3 volume. The HEAT/HESH round is one of several within the overall RGW90 family, which also includes antivehicle, anti-structure and antipersonnel rounds, as well as smoke, illumination and training variants.

HEAT/HESH A2 is in serial production for two international customers and deliveries will begin this year. In the meantime, DND is continuing to work on

new capabilities for the RGW90 family, as well as driving further weight reductions. A new tandem shaped-charge warhead is in development, intended to answer a requirement to counter better protected armoured vehicles and main battle tanks. BAD TO THE DRONE:

THIS SYSTEM HELPS TO CLIP THE WINGS OF MALICIOUS UNMANNED AIRCRAFT Recent incidents in airports from London to New Jersey call for effective responses to malicious drone flights. Raytheon has the answer.

For 36 hours in December, rogue drone sightings shut down London’s Gatwick International Airport. There were similar incidents at London’s Heathrow International Airport in early January and, more recently, at New Jersey’s Teterboro Airport.

“The flight disruptions at Gatwick, Heathrow and Teterboro underscore how vulnerable we are to this new threat,” said Waseem Naqvi, Raytheon director of counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems. “For under $1,000, just about anybody can go into most department stores and walk out with a very capable drone that can be used for nefarious reasons.”

To address the difficulty of detecting and defeating drones, Raytheon has developed a counter-UAS technology called Windshear. It’s a command, control and communications system, which uses rapid plug-and-play of multiple sensors to help operators deploy the right response at the right time. “An operator only has to learn and use a single interface to control multiple layers of detectors, identifiers and effectors,” Naqvi said.

For example, you don’t want to use a destructive kinetic effect in a stadium, where debris, explosives or chemical agents might be involved. Black Sage UASX is a system that combines sensors, cameras, effectors and software.

Artificial intelligence in Windshear selects the best course of action in a particular circumstance.

“You need multiple detectors because drones are very hard to spot,” said Dr. Torsten Staab, principal investigator of counter-drone UAS technology at Raytheon. “They can fly feet from the ground, avoiding radar. Now we’re seeing autonomous drones that don’t emit RF signals, which have preprogrammed routes either using GPS or machine vision.”

Countermeasures to defeat drones of this nature include RF jamming or spoofing and cyber effects. Since some drones fly as fast as 200 mph and can be sent in swarms or waves, Raytheon is improving the speed of AI. Raytheon also offers high-energy laser and PHASER high-powered microwave technologies that disrupt and disable UAVs. The Army is now procuring Raytheon’s small, tubelaunched Coyote UAS as a near-term tool to eliminate enemy unmanned aircraft. Coyote carries various payloads that can cripple enemy drones.

Windshear tracks drones through radio frequencies, radar, acoustic sensors, electro-optical and infrared cameras or human ground spotters. Raytheon has tested several detectors, including its own Skyler low-power radar, as well as the RF-based Raytheon and Department 13’s MESMER and the multi-detecting Black Sage UASX.

“No one solution is 100 percent bulletproof,” Naqvi said.

ADRIAN counters UAV threat Small, mini and micro unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) are improving in capability and fast proliferating.

Recent events have demonstrated the disruption that such vehicles, in the hands of malign actors or terrorists, can cause around airports, military facilities and critical infrastructures.

ADRIAN (Anti DRone Interception and Neutralization) has been developed by Elt (an Elettronica group business; Stand 06-B15, Italian Pavilion) specifically to counter mini- and micro-drones in multiple scenarios and environments, including dense-urban locations.

Recognising that traditional sensors and countermeasures may not be effective or applicable to urban warfare scenarios, ADRIAN uses a multispectral sensor solution (radar, electro-optical/ infrared, acoustic and radio link interceptor) to perform data fusion for detection and identification.

High sensitivity and high efficiency receivers enable the detection of low, slow and small UAVs, while the data fusion algorithm in the mission planner ensures a high probability of intercept, low false alarm rate, and comprehensive situational awareness within the reaction management tool.

To counter the UAV threat, ADRIAN uses a reactive smart jammer to disrupt the remote control link to the operator and deny navigation signals. Innovative jamming techniques enhance the soft-kill effective without affecting the operability of friendly assets.

Elt says the ADRIAN architecture is modular, and can be tailored according to specific operational, environmental and cost/effectiveness requirements. n

DCD PM’s Springbuck HD

BY SAM J BASCH Renowned for an array of solutions, from route clearance technologies, military, police and security vehicles to border patrol, South African firm DCD Protected Mobility (Stand 12-C40) is highlighting its Springbuck HD and SD vehicles, as well as the innovative Husky 2G mine detection system.

DCD Protected Mobility (PM) is ramping up production of a large number of Springbuck HD (heavy-duty) vehicles for an unnamed African client. This in part prompted the company to open new manufacturing facilities where specialised equipment is also being installed in the vehicles.

An ergonomically designed B7 protected weapon turret provides 360° day and night visibility.

Delivery of these vehicles is due in the first quarter of 2019.

This follows deployment during 2017 of the Springbuck HD vehicles in West Africa, where DCD PM collaborated closely with the end-user to provide a vehicle that is perfectly suited to the user’s requirements.

to fulfil a new order for its Springbuck SD (denoting standard), which is still in high demand, is to start soon, because these vehicles are meant for deployment in East Africa.

DCD PM is well-known for its second-generation Husky 2G vehicle-mounted mine detection (VMMD) system, which continues to draw significant international interest. Most improvised explosive device (IED) attacks occur in Africa and the Middle East, prompting many countries in the region to seek effective counter-IED technologies.

“This is where the Husky in its various configurations comes into its own,” explained Grundling.

“Together with our partner, US-based Critical Solutions International (CSI), the first consignment of a large Husky 2G order is commissioned and deployed in the Middle East.”

This long-term contract, estimated at US$132 million, provides an enduring mechanism for US and international foreign military sales customers to purchase C-IED vehicles, spare parts and training at pre-negotiated commercial prices.

More than 1,500 Husky VMMDs are operational on five continents, most in service with the US Army and NATO forces, as a result of the company’s partnership with CSI. The Husky has endured more than 7,500 landmine and IED hits without any blast-related operator fatalities, Grundling concluded. n

BY SAM J BASCH Having developed and manufactured unmanned aerial system (UAS) subsystems for 30 years, South Africa’s Tellumat (Stand 12-C40) is showing ASTUS II, its firstever fullscale UAS, this week.

With a 5.2m wingspan, ASTUS II is a medium-size, mediumrange tactical surveillance UAV, suitable for lengthy missions to undertake real-time surveillance data collection. Other applications include border and coastal security, environmental protection and peacekeeping. It can also be used in the training of UAS pilots for beyond-line-of-sight operations of larger UAVs. The system integrates an aircraft, ground control station and camera payload capability, in a highperformance surveillance package

that is robust, durable, easily transported, quick to deploy and easy to operate.

ASTUS has a minimum crew requirement of four, comprising a pilot, payload

operator, safety pilot and an aircraft technician. With a 92kg maximum take-off weight, including the payload, it operates at 9,000ft, with a service ceiling of 14,000ft. It has an eight-hour endurance at 5,000ft above sea level.

The core avionics package is the Tellumat-designed FMC-2000 flight mission computer, SP-3000 sensor pack, HC-2000 health

control unit, long-range DL-5000 C-band video and datalink system, a COTS UHF back-up datalink and a power management unit.

ASTUS II can accommodate various types of payloads with a maximum mass of 10kg, including a best-inclass optical/thermal payload

in the standard configuration of 250mm maximum diameter and a Tellumat-designed training payload.

Tellumat provides all the necessary support equipment, operational spares and base spares to allow for extended operations without external support.

‫مجموعة (إي سي إيه) تكشف عن أحدث مركباتها البحرية المسيرة آلياً (إنسبيكتور ‪)125‬‬ ‫أبوظــ� – ش‬ ‫النــرة اليوميــة‪ :‬معلــت رشكــة‬ ‫بي‬ ‫«إي يس إيــه» ابلتعــاون مــع فــرع الهندســة‬ ‫البحريــة التابــع لهــا «ماوريــك»‪ ،‬عــى ابتــار‬ ‫مركبــة حبريــة مســرة آل ًيــا جديــدة لك ًيــا تســمى‬ ‫«إنســبيكتور ‪ ،»125‬وقــد مصمــت هــذه املركبــة‬ ‫خصيصــا للعمليــات الــي تــم يف أعــايل البحــار‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫وتمتــز مركبــة «إنســبيكتور ‪ »125‬بكوهنــا جتمــع‬ ‫أحــدث التقنيــات يف جمــال املالحــة البحريــة‬ ‫وأنظمــة التحــم عــن بعــد‪ ،‬مــا جعلهــا األفضــل‬ ‫أدا ًء بــن املركبــات املســرة آليــاً فــوق ســطح‬ ‫البحــر‪ .‬كــا أهنــا تمتتــع مبقاومــة عاليــة للصدمــات‪،‬‬ ‫وهــذه املركبــة يه نتــاج تعــاون حثيــث مــا‬ ‫وبإمــاانت محــل وحســب مذهــة‪ .‬وقــد مصــم‬ ‫هــذا اجليــل اجلديــد مــن املركبــات املســرة آل ًيــا بــن رشكــة «إي يس إيــه» ورشكــة «ماوريــك»‬ ‫خصيصــا إلمتــام العمليــات التابعــة لهــا‪ ،‬إذ يســتند النظــام األســايس لهــذه‬ ‫فــوق ســطح البحــر ً‬ ‫اخلاصــة ابألمــن وادلفــاع؛ مكاكحفــة األلغــام‪ ،‬املركبــة عــى نظــام قــوارب إنقــاذ « يف‪ 2‬إن‬ ‫والتصــدي للغواصــات أثنــاء احلــروب البحريــة‪ ،‬يج» الــي مصمهتــا رشكــة «ماوريــك» للرابطــة‬ ‫ابإلضافــة إىل معليــات املراقبــة والا�ســتخبارات الفرن�ســية للمنقذيــن البحريــن‪ ،‬واملصمــم بدايــة‬ ‫عــام ‪ 2008‬واملعــدل عــام ‪ ،2014‬واذلي أثبــت‬ ‫ودمع القــوات وحاميهتــا‪.‬‬

‫فعاليتــه يف معليــات البحــث واإلنقــاذ مضــن‬ ‫أصعــب الظــروف البيئيــة احمليطــة‪ ،‬األمــر اذلي‬ ‫جعــل «يف ‪ 2‬إن يج» منوذجــاً مثاليــاً ميكــن‬ ‫الاعتماد عليــه البتــار مركبــة جديــدة مســرة آل ًيــا‬ ‫فــوق ســطح البحــر‪.‬‬ ‫ل‬ ‫وقــال ال�ســيد ابســال ميــزيل‪ ،‬املديــر‬ ‫العــام لرشكــة «ماوريــك» معلقًــا هبــذا الصــدد‪:‬‬

‫«ابلن�ســبة لنــا‪ ،‬أمثــر املــزج مــا بــن خربتنــا التقنيــة‬ ‫يف جمــال الروبــواتت والهندســة املعامريــة البحريــة‬ ‫يف تصمــم «أنســبيكتور ‪ « 125‬بشــل خــاص‪.‬‬ ‫لقــد اســتمثران اكفــة إماكانتنــا للحصــول عــى جيــل‬ ‫جديــد مــن املركبــات البحريــة املســرة آل ًيــا‪ .‬إنــه‬ ‫جيــل أكــر مقاومــة ودميومــة‪ ،‬وقــوة وا�ســتقاللية‪،‬‬ ‫ومنوذجيــة»‪.‬‬ ‫بطــول ‪ 12,3‬مــر وعــرض ‪ 4,2‬مــر‪ ،‬ميكــن‬ ‫ملركبــة «إنســبيكتور ‪ »125‬محــل مــا يصــل إىل ‪3‬‬ ‫أطنــان مــن امحلــوةل‪ .‬ويف النســخة القيا�ســية‪ ،‬مت‬ ‫جتهزيهــا مبضختــن نفاثتــن تتيحــان لهــا التحــرك‬ ‫برسعــة تزيــد عــن ‪ 25‬عقــدة أثنــاء محلهــا اكمــل‬ ‫امحلــوةل املمكنــة‪ ،‬كــا أهنــا متوفــرة مبروحتــن‬ ‫وحمــوري إدارة خاصــن بعمليــات القطــر أو‬ ‫الســحب‪ .‬وميكهنــا ســطحها اخللفــي الواســع‬ ‫مــن محــل العديــد مــن أنــواع امحلــوةل‪ ،‬وأهجــزة‬ ‫الاستشــعار الالزمــة ملهــام املراقبــة واملســح‬ ‫البحــري وماكحفــة األلغــام‪.‬‬

‫تعمل في تصنيع أنظمة المركبات البحرية غير المأهولة ‪:‬‬

‫(الصيـر مـارين) ُتطلق برنامجاً تـدريبيـاً لخريجي الهندسة اإلمــاراتيين‬ ‫أبوظــ� – فاديــة معــار‪ :‬أعلنــت رشكــة الصــر‬ ‫بي‬ ‫مقــرا لهــا‬ ‫ماريــن‪ ،‬الــي تتخــذ مــن أبوظبـي ً‬ ‫واملتخصصــة يف بنــاء القــوارب وتصنيــع أنظمــة‬ ‫املركبــات البحريــة غــر املأهــوةل‪ ،‬عــن إطــاق‬ ‫برانمــج تدريبـي فريــد مــن نوعــه خلرجيــي ختصــص‬ ‫الهندســة اإلماراتيــن هيــدف خصيصــاً إىل تعزيــز‬ ‫الكفــاءات احملليــة ودفــع هجــود التوطــن يف‬ ‫قطاعــي العمليــات البحريــة وادلفــاع‪ .‬وبــدأ تنفيــذ‬ ‫هــذه املبــادرة يف ينايــر املــايض‪ ،‬وينصــب الرتكــز‬ ‫فهيــا عــى الارتقــاء مبهــارات املواطنــن اإلماراتيــن‬ ‫يف إطــار رؤيــة طويــة املــدى ‪ ،‬مــع ا�ســهداف‬ ‫أولئــك اذليــن يرغبــون يف العمــل يف قطــاع‬ ‫الروبــواتت البحريــة‪ .‬و�ســيكون تركــز الربانمــج‬ ‫عــى جمــاالت الروبــواتت وال�شــباكت والاتصــاالت‬ ‫والا�ســتقاللية ســع ًيا لمتكــن املهندســن مــن تعزيــز‬ ‫قدراهتــم ابلعمــل امليــداين عــى أرض الواقــع‪.‬‬ ‫وقــد جســل �ســبعة همندســن إماراتيــن ابلفعــل‬ ‫يف هــذا الربانمــج‪ ،‬مــن بيهنــم مخــس نســاء‪ .‬ويف‬ ‫تعليقهــا عــى ذكل‪ ،‬قالــت عليــاء ســامل الشــاميس‪،‬‬ ‫همندســة ال�شــباكت‪« :‬يف إطــار رؤيــة اإلمــارات‬ ‫لعــام ‪ ،2021‬نســعى لــزايدة ن�ســبة التوطــن يف‬

‫شركة (كراكا) السويدية تطلق أول طوافة مطاطية كهربائية‬ ‫أبوظــب ي – أمحــد املج ايــدة ‪ :‬تشــارك «كــرااك» الســويدية يف‬ ‫معــريض آيدكــس وانفدكــس ‪ 2019‬بــأول طوافــة مطاطيــة‬ ‫كهرابئية‪.‬وقالــت الرشكــة اهنــا �ســتعمل عــى تزويــد أحــد وحــدات‬ ‫القـوات اخلاصــة األوروبيــة ابلطوافــات القابــة للنفــخ‪ ،‬وقــد طلبــت‬ ‫تــك الوحــدة مــن الرشكــة تزويــد هــذه الطوافــات مبحــرك نفــاث‪،‬‬ ‫ومــن هنــا جــاءت فكــرة الطوافــات املطاطيــة الكهرابئيــة‪.‬‬ ‫ويــم تزويــد الطوافــة ابلطاقــة مــن خــال بطاريــة ليثيــوم أيونيــة‪،‬‬ ‫ولهــا القــدرة عــى نقــل محــوةل تــزن ‪ 500‬كغــم‪ ،‬وتصــل رسعهتــا إىل‬ ‫‪ 15‬عقــدة‪ ،‬وميكــن طهيــا (مــع حمركهــا) عــى شــل مغلــف صغــر‬ ‫نســبياً ميكــن وضعــه يف كــوة معظــم الغواصــات‪ .‬كــا تمتــز هــذه‬ ‫الغواصــات بقابليهتــا للــزول حتــت املــاء لعمــق يصــل إىل ‪ 10‬أمتــار‪،‬‬ ‫وبإماكنيــة رمهيــا مــن املروحيــات احمللقــة فــوق ســطح املــاء‪ ،‬وميكــن‬ ‫أيضـاً أن حيملهــا املظليــون برفقهتــم أثنــاء القفــز مــن الطائــرة‪.‬‬ ‫ومــن انحيــة أخــرى‪ ،‬ميكــن نفــخ الطوافــات اجلديــدة بســهوةل‬ ‫مبــدى يــراوح مــا‬ ‫مــن خــال نظــم نفــخ ‪ CO2‬األوتوماتيكيــة‪ً ،‬‬ ‫بــن ‪ 60-30‬دقيقــة حســب الرسعــة وامحلــوةل‪ ،‬وبطاريهتــا قابــة ال�ســتخداهما‪ ،‬حيــث يكــون الهــدوء مطلبــاً أسا�ســياً‪ ،‬ابإلضافــة‬ ‫لالســتبدال‪ .‬كــا ميكــن فصــل احملــرك عــن الطوافــة حبيــث يمتكــن إىل إماكنيــة ا�ستخدامـــها يف عبــور األهنــار وغريهــا مــن العمليــات‬ ‫خشصــان فقــط مــن محلهــا (غــر منفوخــة) خــال املضائــق‪ ،‬الهنريــة‪ ،‬والتوجــه مــن الغواصــات والســفن إىل الشــاطئ‪ ،‬ويف‬ ‫وتتوفــر بســعة راكبــن أو ‪ 4‬راكب‪ .‬رتعــد امل ـوائن املــان األمثــل معليــات اإلنقــاذ‪ ،‬ومعليــات التنقــل يف امليــاه الضحــة‪ ،‬أو محلــل‬

‫املعــدات الثقيــة للغواصــن‪ .‬وميكــن ختزيهنــا بســهوةل عــى مــن اكفــة‬ ‫املركبــات والق ـوارب املطاطيــة القا�ســية واملروحيــات والغواصــات‪.‬‬ ‫وجتعلهــا قدرهتــا عــى التحــرك حتــت املــاء هبــدوء اتم عصي ـ ًة عــى‬ ‫الاكتشــاف‪.‬‬

‫هينزولدت تعرض أنظمة رادار تفادي التصادم للطائرات المسيرة آلياً عن بعد‬ ‫ـ� – ير� عبدالكـ ي‬ ‫ـر� ‪ :‬جنحــت رشكــة‬ ‫أبوظـ ب ي‬ ‫هيــزودلت يف امتــام اختبــارات الط ـران اخلاصــة‬ ‫بأنظمــة رادارات تفــادي التصــادم للطائــرات‬ ‫املســرة عــن بعــد‪ .‬وقــد مت تصمــم هــذه األنظمــة‬ ‫اجلديــدة لتعزيــز أمــن وســامة حركــة املــرور‬ ‫اجلويــة للطائ ـرات املدنيــة والعســكرية عــى حــد‬ ‫س ـواء‪.‬‬ ‫إذ معلــت رشكــة هيــزودلت الــي تشــارك يف‬ ‫آيدكــس ‪ 2019‬عــى تطويــر منــوذج توضيحــي‬ ‫ملــا يعــرف بأنظمــة الكشــف والتفــادي‪ ،‬الــي‬ ‫تعمــل وفــق أحــدث تقنيــات الـرادار‪ ،‬وتقــوم عــى‬ ‫الكشــف عــن األجســام الــي قــد تعــرض ســبيل‬ ‫الطائــرات املســرة عــن بعــد‪ ،‬وإعطــاء إشــارة‬ ‫حتذيريــة مبكــرة حــول أي إماكنيــة تصــادم حممتــة‪،‬‬ ‫وذكل عــن طريــق حتديــد الاجتــاه اذلي تســلكه‬ ‫املركبــة بشــل دقيــق‪ .‬ويف الوقــت ذاتــه‪ ،‬تــؤدي‬ ‫اكفــة املهــام الــي تقــوم هبــا أنظمــة الـرادار اخلاصــة‬ ‫ابلطقــس‪.‬‬ ‫وخــال اختبــارات الطــران الــي عقــدت‬ ‫ابلنيابــة عــن ســلطة ادلمع الفــي والتقــي‬ ‫واملعلومــايت واخلــديم للق ـوات املســلحة األملانيــة‬ ‫(‪ ،)BAAINBw‬ابلتعــاون مــع مركــز الفضــاء‬ ‫األملــاين (‪ )DLR‬يف برونزيــك‪ ،‬ا�ســتعرض‬ ‫ال ـرادار إماكانتــه مضــن ظــروف جويــة واقعيــة‪،‬‬ ‫مؤكــدً ا حصــة نتــاجئ الاختبــارات الــي مت عقدهــا الهـــــدف مــــن عــدة زوااي وعلـــــى ارتفاعــات ابلغــة‪ ،‬مبــا ي ـوازي دقــة تقديــر الطيــار املنظــور‬ ‫للحــاةل‪ .‬إن هــذا الــرادار املتعــدد الوظائــف‪،‬‬ ‫ســابقًا عــى ســطح األرض‪ .‬وجتــدر اإلشــارة إىل خمتلفــة‪.‬‬ ‫ان تــك الاختبــارات اجلويــة استـــمرت لعــدة‬ ‫تعمــل أنظمــة رادار الكشــف والتفــادي وفــق مناســب للطائــرات املدنيــة والعســكرية عــى‬ ‫ســاعات‪ ،‬متكــن خاللهــا ال ـرادار اذلي مت إيصــاهل أحــدث تقنيــات املنظومــة الفعــاةل إلكرتونيــة حــد ســواء‪ ،‬وذكل بفضــل إمــاانت الكشــف‬ ‫بطائــرة مســرة عــن بعــد مــن نــوع «دورنيــر دو املســح (‪ ،)AESA‬الــي متكهنــا مــن إمتــام عــدة املذهــة الــي يمتتــع هبــا‪ .‬ومــن اخملطــط أن يــم‬ ‫‪ »228‬مــن الكشــــف عــن طائــرة الاختبــار همــام ا�ســتطالعية يف الوقــت ذاتــه وبرسعــة إجـراء سلســة جديــدة مــن الاختبــارات اجلويــة‬

‫(أس إف سي إنيرجي) تزود القوات األلمانية (‪ )BAAINBw‬بشبكات توليد الطاقة‬ ‫أبوظـ ب يـ�‪ -‬النـ شـرة اليوميــة ‪ :‬قالــت رشكــة «إس إف يس إنــريج» الــي تشــارك يف آيدكــس ‪2019‬‬ ‫اهنــا تلقــت طلبــات إضافيــة عــى منتجاهتــا مــن قبــل هيئــة ادلمع الفــي والتقــي واملعلومــايت واخلــديم‬ ‫للق ـوات املســلحة األملانيــة (‪ .)BAAINBw‬حيــث طلبــت الهيئــة وحــدات إضافيــة مــن �شــباكت‬ ‫توليــد الطاقــة املتنقــة «جيــي ‪ » 600‬ومنظــم الطاقــة «يب إم ‪3‬يج»‪ ،‬بقميــة إجامليــة تبلــغ ‪ 1,4‬مليــون‬ ‫يــورو‪ .‬وتعــد«إس إف يس إنــريج» إحــدى الـراكت الرائــدة يف جمــال توفــر حلــول الطاقــة الهجينــة‬ ‫يف ســوق العمــل اخلــاص مبعــدات توليــد الطاقــة الثابتــة واملتحركــة‪،‬‬ ‫فبعــد ا�ســتخداهما خلــااي الطاقــة مــن «إس إف يس» عــام ‪ ،2010‬طلبــت هيئــة ادلمع الفــي والتقــي‬ ‫واملعلومــايت واخلــديم للقـوات املســلحة األملانيــة (‪ )BAAINBw‬حشنــة خضمــة مــن �شــباكت «إس إف‬ ‫يس» املــودلة للطاقــة يف ديســمرب ‪ .2017‬واآلن‪ ،‬تعمــل الهيئــة عــى تزويــد املزيــد مــن أقســام القـوات‬ ‫املســلحة مبعــدات توليــد الطاقــة املتنقــة تــك الــي أثبتــت فعاليهتــا يف الكثــر مــن املهــام والاختبــارات‪.‬‬ ‫إن �شــباكت «إس إف يس» املــودلة للطاقــة يه أحــد احللــول املتاكمــة الــي تتكــون مــن خــااي‬ ‫توليــد الطاقــة املتنقــة جيــي ‪ ،600‬ومنظــات الطاقــة «يب إم ‪3‬يج» مــن رشكــة «إس إف يس»‪ ،‬ونــوع‬ ‫خــاص مــن البطــارايت الهجينــة‪ ،‬وخــااي مش�ســية‪ ،‬وغريهــا‪ .‬ومتكهنــا قدرهتــا العاليــة عــى توليــد الطاقــة‬ ‫مــن تشــغيل العديــد مــن األهجــزة الكهرابئيــة‪ ،‬مثــل األهجــزة الالســلكية ومعــدات املالحــة والرؤيــة‬ ‫الليليــة‪ ،‬ومُقــدر املســافات اللــزري‪ ،‬واحلواســيب املتنقــة وأهجــزة املســاعدة الشــخصية الرمقيــة‪.‬‬ ‫أثنــاء معلهــا‪ ،‬تعمــل �شــبكة «إس إف يس» املــودلة للطاقــة عــى توفــر مــا يصــل إىل ‪ 80‬ابملائــة‬ ‫مــن الــوزن مقا نر ـ ًة حبلــول الطاقــة التقليديــة‪ .‬مفــع منظــم الطاقــة «يب إم ‪3‬يج»‪ ،‬حمــول اجلهــد اذليك‪،‬‬ ‫ميكهنــا تشــغيل أي هجــاز تقريبـاً مــن أي مصــدر متــاح‪ ،‬عــى ســبيل املثــال؛ خــااي الوقــود أو األلـواح‬ ‫الشم�ســية أو البطــارايت‪ .‬كــا ميكهنــا حشــن أن ـواع خمتلفــة مــن البطــارايت أثنــاء التنقــل‪ .‬إن معليــات‬
