1 | SXSW Taking place annually in mid-March, SXSW is a 10-day, citywide festival combining interactive, film, and music events. In 2018, roughly 430,000 people participated in the festival which consisted of over 2,700 musical performances, 2,100 conference sessions, 455 film screenings, and nearly 200 gaming expos.

Whether attendees prefer going all out with a platinum badge; jumping to the front of the line with a wristband, or keeping it cheap at the festival’s many free parties; SXSW appeals to all.

2 | AUSTIN CITY LIMITS Spanning two weekends in October, ACL welcomes roughly 450,000 people each year. Taking place in Zilker Park, the festival has performances at eight stages, with past headliners including Jay-Z, Eminem, Amy Winehouse, The Eagles, Foo Fighters, and Radiohead among many more. So whether you attend for pure nostalgia, to endure the crowds at the headliner’s stage, or to rock out to your favorite indie band; you are sure to find the music that soothes your soul at ACL.

3 | UT FOOTBALL Relocating to Austin means moving to one of the country’s most passionate college football cities. The University of Texas’ Longhorn Football is no joke. On any given weekend from September to November, West Campus and downtown Austin are covered with fans decked out in UT jerseys, Longhorn flags, burnt orange trucks, and fan gear galore. The entire town celebrates. From pre-game tailgate parties to students chanting in the stands to post-game celebrations on Sixth Street, Austin goes wild for Longhorn football.

SIGHTSEEING 4 | PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE Crossing Lady Bird Lake in Downtown Austin, the James D. Pfluger Pedestrian and Bicycle Bridge offers one of the best views of the city. The bridge connects Butler Park to Auditorium Shores and is used by walkers, joggers, and cyclists to access the trails.

The bridge has two lanes complete with planters full of indigenous flowers on either side, a helical ramp taking pedestrians to ground level, and offers a breathtaking view of the lake and downtown Austin.

5 | GRAFFITI PARK Austin’s famous graffiti park, HOPE Outdoor Gallery, is one of the city’s most photogenic locations. The park was built to give aspiring artists a place to legally practice their craft. This multi-leveled park, featuring walls covered in street art, was once located on Castle Hill, but is being relocated to six acres on Carson Creek Ranch near the airport. The new location will bring with it one of the paint covered slabs of concrete from the original location and supporters can purchase a personalized brick to be installed.

6 | GREENBELT (VARIOUS ENTRY SPOTS) For a uniquely Austin experience, head to the Greenbelt -- a 7.25 mile stretch of land, trails, and creek running from Zilker Park to Westlake. The Greenbelt has various points of entry, all offering a different level of hiking difficulty and one-of-akind swimming. Whether you prefer laying out on limestone flats with a trail of water meandering by, finding the highest cliff to jump from into deep waters, or hiking long distances; the Greenbelt has a spot for every mood you may be in. Keep in mind that the creek isn’t always full, so hit the belt a few days after a good rainfall for optimal swimming conditions.

7 | LADY BIRD JOHNSON WILDFLOWER CENTER Founded in 1982 by Lady Bird Johnson and Helen Hayes, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is not only a botanical garden, but a research hub that explores the ecology of Central Texas and conservation. The center’s 100% native plants span 282 acres of gardens, woodlands, and savannas. But plants aren’t the only ones who thrive here. The wildflower center is home to 93 different species of butterflies, 148 bird species, and over 70 species of native Texas trees.

8 | MCKINNEY FALLS Deemed “Austin’s backyard,” McKinney Falls State Park is located 13 miles southeast of the state capitol building and offers an unrefined escape from city life. Listen to the sound of the water crashing over the edge of limestone cliffs into the pool below, hike trails through areas where early Texas settlers explored, or camp in one of 81 campsites located within the park -- there is much to see, do and enjoy at McKinney Falls!

9 | STATE CAPITOL Centered in downtown, the building is made entirely out of sunset red granite from Granite Mountain outside of Marble Falls. At 360,000 square feet, the Texas State Capitol building is the largest state capitol building in the nation. Guests enter at the central rotunda, which features portraits of every person who has served as president of the Republic of Texas or governor of Texas. Visitors can walk around the ground’s 22 acres and view the statues and monuments that are scattered about.

The Capitol building is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m to 10:00 p.m and on the weekends from 9:00 a.m to 8:00 p.m.

10 | 360 BRIDGE Soak in the beauty of the Texas Hill Country at the 360 Bridge. Also known as the Pennybacker Bridge, this formation features a rust colored arch, completely suspended above Lake Austin and supported by 72 steel cables. The bridge is four lanes wide with a six foot wide pedestrian lane, making it a popular destination for cyclists. Connecting the northern and southern sections of the 360 Loop highway, the bridge is considered one of the most scenic drives in the state of Texas.

OUTDOOR LIVING 11 | LADY BIRD LAKE What is actually a reservoir situated on the Colorado River, is known to Austin as Lady Bird Lake. Stretching over 416 acres, Lady Bird Lake is surrounded by hike and bike trails and is most commonly used for paddleboarding, kayaking, and rowing. And while motor boats are not allowed on the lake, a few companies offer electric party boat and pontoon boat rides to give you a glimpse of Austin from the water. Tours include bat-watching, moonlight cruises, sightseeing rides and more. Additionally, fishing is permitted as the lake is stocked with many different species of fish including largemouth bass, catfish, carp, and sunfish.

Although Lake Austin was created as part of Lake Travis’ outflow, that doesn’t mean it falls second to its older sister lake. Lake Austin is one of seven of the Highland Lakes and is a favorite destination for motorized boats and jet skis. After a day out on the boat, pop into one of the lake’s many restaurants for eats and drinks.

Popular restaurants include Mozart’s Coffee, Hula Hut, and Abel’s on the Lake.

Emma Long Metropolitan park is located on the shores of the lake and offers camping sites, facilities for picnicking, grilling, and more!

Located just a stone’s throw away from downtown Austin, Zilker Park is always buzzing with citizens and visitors alike.

Whether you prefer to grab your fourlegged friend and join the off leash dog crowd, bring the kids for a day of outdoor fun, or opt for a romantic picnic on the grassy knoll; you are sure to fit in at Zilker Park. And the park is always hosting events. From Austin City Limits to Blues on the Green taking place once a month during the summer, there is always fun to be had!

Spanning 26 acres, the gardens are made up of native, hybrid, and exotic plants.

Walking through the cactus and succulent garden will make you feel as though you are walking through a beautified version of Texas’ natural terrain. Alternately, the Japanese garden provides a peaceful contrast to the rest of the gardens.

Additional gardens include the herb garden, the Hartman prehistoric garden, the Mabel Davis rose garden, the City of Austin’s green garden, the Doug Blachly Butterfly Trail and Garden, Pioneer Village, Daylily Beds, and the Children’s Gard.

Feel like a kid again at Barton Springs pool located near Zilker Park. Kept at a chilling, year round 68-70 degrees, Barton Springs Pool is the place to be during the summer months but can be enjoyed all year long.

But this pool is unlike any other, it is a three acre, spring fed pool with depths ranging from zero to 18 feet. Surrounding the natural pool is a large, grassy lawn where visitors relax after taking a dip. It is also home to the endangered Barton Springs Salamander and is listed as a federally protected habitat. Visitors can learn more about the salamander and springs at Splash!

Lake Travis has become an essential part of Austin’s landscape and has contributed to its reputation as a center for al fresco living. Stretching 65 miles, Lake Travis is used recreationally for sports like fishing, boating, swimming, scuba diving, picnicking, camping, and zip lining. After working up an appetite on the lake, visit one of many great restaurants located on Lake Travis.

Some of our favorites include Sundancer Grill, Cedar Creek Docksite, Beachside Billy’s, The Oasis, and The Lighthouse Restaurant and Lounge -- many of which are accessible via boat.

Austin is home to a considerable number of country clubs that invite you to cool off during the summer or perfect your golf swing. We love Barton Creek Country Club for its luxurious spa services, Westwood Country Club for its convenient location and large pool, and Austin Country Club for its golf courses and lakeside views.

The options don’t end there! Other highly rated clubs include River Place Country Club, Austin Country Club, Balcones Country Club, Lost Creek Country Club, Great Hills Country Club, and Twin Creeks Country Club.

18 | BLANTON MUSEUM OF ART Located at The University of Texas, the Jack S. Blanton Museum of Art is one of the largest university art museums in the country. The museum houses a permanent collection of over 18,000 pieces of art including European paintings, prints and drawings; and contemporary American and Latin American art by artists such as Parmigianino, Claude Lorrain, Thomas Hart Benton, Cildo Meireles, Raphael, and beyond. In addition to permanent exhibits, the museum has an ever-changing rotation of temporary exhibits.

19 | AUDITORIUM SHORES Auditorium Shores is an urban park, located in downtown Austin near Town Lake and is the go-to locale for all things music, party, and outdoor-chilling and living. It is the site of major events held during South by Southwest, in addition to the ever-popular Austin Food and Wine Festival, and Reggae Fest. On any given day, you can find a game of frisbee in the works, dogs of all sizes and breeds running around, or cyclist relaxing after a ride around Town Lake.

20 | ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE Alamo Drafthouse is not your typical movie theater experience. Kick back and enjoy a cinema-inspired meal complete with your favorite beer on tap all while enjoying the latest Hollywood production or your childhood favorite. The cinema hosts viewings that go far beyond the usual. From 90’s princess sing-alongs to movie marathons that last all day long.

There are now over 40 Drafthouse locations around the country, but it all started right here in ATX.

SHOPPING GUIDE 21 | 5TH /6TH STREET Known as Austin’s Design District, the West Sixth Street corridor is home to a variety of interior design firms and retail shops brimming with the latest and greatest furniture, decor, homeware, and even masterpiece paintings. But the Design District isn’t restricted to home decor and furniture. There are a variety of clothing and boutique stores as well including By George, Julian Gold, Found, Free People, and Paper Source. While you’re in the area, stop by the ATX sign next to Whole Foods, where visitors and locals alike can be seen taking photos.

22 | DOMAIN The Domain quickly grew from one street of shops and restaurants into Austin’s major outdoor retail hub. Whether you need to up your fashion game, decorate your home, revamp your skincare routine, or all of the above; the Domain has a store to suit your needs. Additionally, the shopping center is full of delicious eats and treats. After you get your shopping on, spend the evening bar hopping along The Domain’s Rock Rose Road -the sixth street of north Austin. The Domain also hosts live music every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, from March through October.

23 | SOUTH CONGRESS Take a walk down Austin’s famous South Congress Avenue, for authentic ATX shopping, eats, and drinks. Browse one of a kind jewelry from street vendors, pop in and out of uniquely “Austin” retail stores, or shop your favorites at trendy boutiques. Grab a bite to eat at one of many local restaurants including South Congress Cafe, Hopdoddy Burger Bar, Home Slice Pizza, or June’s All Day. You can’t resist indulging in a specialty cocktail at South Congress Hotel or Hotel San Jose. While you’re there, don’t forget to take a picture by the “I love you so much” wall at Jo’s Coffee.

24 | 2ND STREET DISTRICT Austin’s 2nd Street District is city shopping at it’s finest. The street is home to various boutiques and restaurants, well-equipped for a day of shopping and refueling. Admire fine jewelry at Eliza Page, get ideas for a home update at Hacienda, or consult with a personal stylist at Modcloth. The options go on and on at the 2nd Street District. Other stores we love include Bonobos, Blue Dot, Francesca’s, Hemline, Toy Joy, Luxe Apothetique, LOFT, and Prize. 2nd Street District offers a variety of eateries so that you can find something to suit every discerning eater.

25 | EAST SIDE SUCCULENTS If you ever find yourself stalking #Austin on Instagram, then chances are you will be seeing your fair share of East Side Succulents. And for good reason. This open-air nursery stocks cacti, succulent and air plants in addition to pots, plant holders, and arrangements. It’s the place to be when on the hunt for the perfect succulent. Upon entry, visitors will come upon the vast cacti selection. Venture to the back of the grounds to find the greenhouse, offering everything from a $50 baby cactus to a wall of $5 succulents.

26 | DOWNTOWN From posh dining to trendy food trucks, downtown Austin offers a wealth of delicious eats and drinks. For upscale Southern food complete with the best biscuits in town, take a visit to Olamaie, located smack dab between downtown and UT campus in a black and white clapboard house. For a more laid back atmosphere, Easy Tiger on East 6th street is a must. The beer garden, located right on Waller Creek, offers freshly baked pastries, sausage, and beer aplenty.

After dinner, swing by The Driskill Hotel’s Texas-themed bar. Welcoming everyone from tech CEOs to old school Austin free spirits, the Driskill Hotel bar is a local favorite.

We also love the Roosevelt Room for its thoughtful menu of cocktails that are reminiscent of drinking history.

27 | EAST SIDE BY WHITE HORSE Austin’s East Side has been rapidly growing over the last few years and likewise has seen a surge in restaurants and bars, specifically the area between East 7th and East 4th, 35 and Chicon St. Venture down Cesar Chavez a bit and you will hit Bufalina, a quaint space with family-style tables serving up hand crafted artisanal pizza and an extensive wine list. Across the street from Bufalina is East Side Tavern.

Whether you choose to sit on the patio or rooftop deck, East Side Tavern is known for their smoked meats and draft brews. As far as drinks are concerned, the options are virtually endless.Wright Bros Brew and Brew serves up beer and coffee alongside pastries and sandwiches. Get your honky tonk on at The White Horse, offering live music and a fun atmosphere.

28 | S LAMAR (EBERLY / UCHI) Some of Austin’s best cuisine is located on South Lamar. The original Uchi is housed in a refurbished bungalow serving up nontraditional sushi and Japanese dishes. The restaurant group, Hai Hospitality, has gone on to open five additional restaurants. It is recommended that guests share dishes and order as they eat. Another South Lamar favorite is Eberly. Built out of an old print shop, Eberly’s interior is strikingly beautiful. From the blue velvet seating to the bright, plant-filled atrium, the detail that went into building the restaurant is outstanding. For a casual happy hour, sit at the Cedar Tavern Bar, a vintage bar built in 1866 and delivered from New York City. This bar has hosted the likes of Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix and Jackson Pollock.

SOUTH AUSTIN South Austin, generally considered the area from Town Lake to Slaughter Lane, is the epicenter of the “Keep Austin Weird” movement. This area of town was once the place to be for musicians and free spirits, but has grown to become one of Austin’s prized jewels. With Zilker Park, Barton Springs, various Greenbelt entry points, endless shopping and restaurants all nearby; it’s hard to find a more “Austin” neighborhood with all the perks. The Zilker neighborhood is agreeably one of the most coveted in the city, with classic craftsman homes and brand new, contemporary style houses lining the hilly streets. Additionally, Travis Heights is a quiet oasis walking distance to the hustle and bustle of downtown and Congress Avenue. We also love Southhampton Hills for it’s more reasonable prices while still being close to restaurants and entertainment.

CIRCLE C RANCH Drive South on Mopac until it hits 45 and then keep going. Eventually, you will happen upon Circle C Ranch, a large master-planned community in Southeast Austin. With over 54,000 homes, a golf course, tennis courts, three swim centers, 500 acres of parkland, top rated schools, and an average home price of $450,000; Circle C Ranch has been attracting families since its start in the 80’s.

The community was annexed from Austin in 1997, but has still continued to grow and flourish.

WESTLAKE Nestled just six miles from downtown sits Westlake Hills, one of the most (if not the most) exclusive areas in Austin. Houses sit nestled in the hills, along winding roads, with views of downtown and Lake Austin peeking through the branches of large live oaks. But perhaps the main attraction to Westlake is the area’s elite school district, rated as one of the top districts in Texas. But exclusive schools and beautiful scenery don’t come cheap. The majority of homes in Westlake are listed between 1.1-1.2 million and many are selling for much higher. Furthermore, Westlake’s proximity to Austin proper makes accessing dining and entertainment seamless.

But the area does have its own offerings. Popular restaurants include Jack Allen’s Kitchen, County Line BBQ, Las Palomas, Texas Honey Ham, and The Grove.

GEORGETOWN

CEDAR PARK Situated just 17 miles from downtown Austin is one of the city’s largest suburbs, Cedar Park. Served by the highly rated Leander School District, Cedar Park calls itself “the best place to raise a family,” and for good reason. The town is home to 47 city parks, 22 miles of trails, golf courses, wineries, breweries and more! The H-E-B Center at Cedar Park is a sport and entertainment arena that hosts the Texas Stars Hockey team and Austin Spurs Basketball team, in addition to popular musical performers. As one of the safest cities in Texas, Cedar Park is rapidly growing. And with a median home price of about $320k, it doesn’t get much better than that!

ROUND ROCK Recognized as one of the most liveable towns, Round Rock is a fast-growing suburb just north of Austin, known for its outdoor activities and historic sites. The city has become a major center for economic growth and is home to companies in industries like Clean Energy, Advanced Manufacturing, Life Sciences, and Computer and Software Development. Downtown Round Rock is full of family and date night fun. From grabbing a drink at a local watering hole, to biking along one of the city’s many trails, to visiting the library with the kids; you are sure to find just what you’re looking for. Round Rock’s median listing price is nearly $330k and rising, so act now before prices soar.

SUBURBAN LIVING

Located about 30 miles from Austin, Georgetown is a great location to raise a family without the exorbitant price tag of other areas closer to the city. The heart of Georgetown is its historic downtown square, made up of some of the country’s best-preserved Victorian and pre-WWI buildings. The city has been named one of the best places to purchase a historical house and was designated a national “Main Street City” in 1997 due to its preservation efforts. Known as the “Red Poppy” Capital of Texas, Georgetown is recognized for its poppies that are planted throughout the city. Hence the city’s Red Poppy Festival happening each year in April. Locals and visitors alike can enjoy the town’s many parks and outdoor areas including San Gabriel Park, Blue Hole, Inner Space Cavern, and a variety of hike and bike trails.
