Light Echoes

Light Echoes is an ongoing photography project, started November of 2023, in which I take photos in and around my community in southern Arizona and collage them digitally to create new meaning and understanding of where I have been.

A light echo can occur when starlight reflects off interstellar material and becomes visible on earth at different times. Astronomers collage snapshots of the sky over time to get more complete information of the life and death of stars. When we peer into the sky we are always seeing things that happened in the past.

In a similar way, the final images I create are light echoes of my own past. They are made up of things that were illuminating to me in that particular moment, most often concrete, rusted metal and disused equipment.

Light Echoes is about looking back through time and finding the hidden story in my environment, as well as within myself.

This book is dedicated to Jane Dunnewold, an artist, author, mentor, friend, and creator of Creative Strength Training: An Online Artist’s Community, and to K. Wayne Harms. The sentiment has never been more true, in so many ways, that without them both, this book would not exist.
