Words from Jane Archetypes are universal patterns of behavior that we instinctively recognize. Think of them as a sort of shorthand. Descriptions like mother, king, gambler, saboteur and child conjure pictures in our minds. We immediately recognize these personality traits. They provide insight into our own behavior, as well as helping us understand the behavior of others.

Archetypes have become central to my deepening respect for, and love of, creative intelligence.

Human beings come into the world born with an innate sense of creative possibility and joy. Children manifest this naturally. Adults often lose touch with their creative intelligence but it’s always in there.

Creative Strength Training is designed to help people reconnect with their creative selves, or further the connection if they are already making things.

The pieces included in this exhibition feature archetypes, and were made by participants in the 2021 online program. Every year our community studies archetypes as they relate to creative process, along with tutorials on art practices. This year we focussed on the development of a personal series of works.

Not everyone chose to work with archetypes, but sixty-nine artists submitted work for inclusion in this show. Some artists worked specifically with the theme of an archetype every month, while others worked with the help of a personal archetype as a piece evolved.

I am delighted to share these wonderful pieces with you, and I applaud the artists who rose to the challenge to submit their work.

ne of the strongest archetypical influences in my life is that of the Storyteller. But, like anyone who begins to study personal archetypes, a single archetype rarely works alone.

I have found that my Explorer usually determines the directions that look the most interesting, my Storyteller revels in the messages we find on the road, and my Artist finds fulfillment in documenting the journeys and discoveries along the way. I think of each finished piece as a map of where I (and my twelve archetypes) have been, but also where my current skills as a mapmaker and a Storyteller lie.

My maps take many different forms.

Some stories are told better in one medium over another. The three digital composites shown here are part of a growing series titled Self-Portrait of an Archetype. Each was meant to “map” a single archetype by exploring memories, personal challenges and lessons learned under their influence. However, as I travel further down this road, it becomes harder to separate the individual archetypes, and I can always see the hint of all twelve in each piece.

My Storyteller’s hope is that you can see some of your own stories here, as well.

rior to 2019 I had not heard the word, “archetype”, let alone know what was in store for me with Creative Strength Training and studying this idea.

In 2021, I chose the word “positivity” for the year and began digging deeper into what archetypes meant for me. In the previous two years I read the essays and digested them but didn’t really apply the knowledge. 2021 was the year to begin analyzing and paying attention. I took an ice-dyeing class and one of the pieces I

created deserved to be studied closer.

In it I found the images of beings. I knew then that they were my Archetypes. From left to right is the Mother who holds a child in her womb, the Saboteur, the Rebel, and the Student who is learning and soaring with new-found knowledge.

I hand-dyed the background fabric and then added paint to accentuate the images. I was also exploring composition, and at the time bilateral composition was being explored, which I applied.

I

am an art quilter in a country where art quilting is almost nonexistent, and traditional quilting not far from unknown, so I prefer to call myself a textile artist.

My creative process usually begins when going through my fabrics. I’m taken by their texture and color. I’m currently working with a collage technique that enables me to improvise with great freedom. Each little piece of fabric may be added as an impulse or as the result of prolonged pondering.

Systems and structures must be dismantled so that a new life can be born.

This piece was meant to be something else, I had prepared everything to make a big piece. It took me some time to start working on it, my mind was a complete blank, and it remained like that for days on end, until I finally decided to go small and just let go.

The impulse to destroy and rebuild is archetypal. We are bound to this cycle and therein lies the learning. Finally, a vase came into being. But then, that was not it. It was a novel, strong experience to cut the vase into pieces, and then create something new with them. It felt good and authentic to show this process.

Destruction to release that which is destroying us. I have "broken" things several times in my life, maybe even ruthlessly, in order to end situations that were beginning to suffocate me.

The power of positive destruction is enormously healing and liberating. I believe that in every case the result was positive, but the process not always smooth. So yes, there is a Destroyer in me, and it has helped me to grow both as an artist and in my personal life.

am an artist currently creating art quilts that incorporate my own digitally altered photographs printed onto fabric.

I consider the process a form of surface design. I began using Photoshop when it was introduced, and recently discovered the wide world of apps for my iPad Pro and iPhone.

I became interested in studying archetypes a number of years ago when I joined a discussion group focused on Caroline Myss’ Sacred Contracts. When I learned that Creative Strength Training would be studying archetypes as related to creativity, I signed up.

As each archetype was introduced, I worked at creating new images using my photographs and several illustrations from my own childhood story books.

As I worked along, I thought about

the meaning each archetype holds for me and the resulting images are my personal expressions. They are not intended as illustrations. I decided to print the images as a composite on paper which will be framed. Of the 20 images in the grid there are 16 archetypes. Several of the archetypes are dual. The remaining four images are included just for fun!

e, Myself and My Creative "I" is a digitally-composed piece that merges photos of “me” as an adult, “myself” as a child (the Happy Child) and the “I” of the Dilettante, as characterized by the Magpie. The Happy Child and Dilettante are constant companions. I remain happy in my creative pursuits and the Dilettante (sitting on my shoulder) calls for experimentation and trying new things.This piece is printed on cotton fabric with hand-dyed cotton borders, it has been free-hand quilted on my domestic machine, enhancing the images and adding a geometric border of stitching.

Art has always played an important role in my self-expression. Supported by my mother, I was allowed to display my 'artwork' in a hallway in our home and that was the beginning of a life filled with creativity.

Submerged in fabrics, toying with their colors and shapes, I was an addict before it was a “thing”. Garment sewing, machine and hand stitching, needlepoint, crewel work, macrame,

filled many years. After a few years of laying fallow, in 1991 I decided to take a quilting class and have never looked back.

After taking many workshops and classes, reading countless books, watching videos and trying numerous techniques, my quilting life is in constant flux – wanting to try different techniques.

Every new project sends me off in another direction. I often work on many pieces simultaneously, but each project sends me 'down the rabbit hole’ – deeply absorbed in the creation until it tells me it's finished. Currently, I am intrigued by digital manipulation of photographs using various iPad apps that I print out on fabric and how to incorporate these images into my work.

Art quilts fascinates me, with specialized construction like a puzzle I need to solve. The idea appears and then the concept of creation develops. The colors of nature pull me in, but my secret wish is for more colors to be discovered. Imagine!

Saboteur vs. the Rebel

CST has encouraged me to evaluate the voices in my head. All the negative comments that flood back as I work on a new project. Why do I value past negative comments over the positive?

I am learning to consider the source of the voice and value my process. This quilt is a reminder to trust my creative ideas to completion.

As I began a new project, different from other quilts I had made in the past, I found myself reverting to an old design.

Afraid to share a new design with CST members. Doing something safe, sabotaging myself and my creativity. In other pursuits I am a rebel. Not afraid to take risks and try new things. Compelled to make my old design new, I allowed the Rebel to take over to complete the project. Celebrating my freedom by adding embellishments.

create art to express my wishes for peace and happiness into the universe. Over two decades of studying Buddhism and traveling to the sacred temples, canyons and mountain-tops of the world, these phrases of “loving kindness” (may you be happy, live in peace, in safety, in health, and with ease) have called out to me.

This past year, I travelled to meet “myself as a child” and discovered her story was so very different from what I’d been raised to believe.

The key elements of Breathe are the photo of myself as a child, and the protection she’s experiencing from the hardy Cyclamen (these beautiful winter plants for which I had previously bartered a piece of my art). The arcs of spiral dots surrounding her come from our frequent relocating to protect the child, which prevented any experience of feeling

settled. The child recommends now, after 67 years of silence, “Breathe out the worry and Breathe in the calm.” I was delighted in my research to discover the Cyclamen signifies healing of the child.

I start with a whole piece of white silk broadcloth and another of white silk organza.

After manipulating the fabrics, by twisting, masking, or pulling threads to result in interesting textures and spaces, using a palette of colors from nature, I dye and paint on motifs of my own design from my travels.

I prefer to hang the flags freely away from the gallery wall or suspend them from the ceiling, allowing the layers of fabric to float effortlessly with any air flows, sending my prayers to the heavens.

he archetypes I selected are combinations. The first is Artist/Engineer because my background is a mixture of art and science. Printmaking also combines science and art.

The second combination is Miser/Addict presented as a focus on time. I am very protective of my time to think and plan. For the addict, I am a collector. In this print I am using images to represent my textile collection from international travel.

The third group is Teacher/Student/Researcher. I am constantly exploring color and design, taking classes, and still active in training textile teams on color evaluation protocols.

The series uses a composition that has a dominant geometric element and the use of the spiral. Maps are included in each print to represent the Explorer Creative, one of four types described by Roger von Oech in his creative thinking book, A Kick in the Seat of the Pants. I assigned symbolic meaning to images, shapes, colors and metallics based on the archetype.

For Artist/Engineer the colors are analogous in the violet family because of the

philosophy and creativity association. The metallic is silver, which I use as a clean and highly reflective contrast to the dark violet.

The overlapping geometric shapes symbolize the Engineer. The color grid and blend is the Artist.

The Miser/Addict uses circles as the symbol of time, as well as Images of a clock, labyrinth, and calendar. The 12-pointed star is both a clock and the sun. Gold is borrowed from the story of King Midas. I repeat the analogous color strategy centered on bluegreen. Areas of textile patterns are included along the borders to represents collecting.

The paper is black to show the shadow side of the Miser and the Addict.

The Teacher/Student/Researcher has copper bars expanding from the center to represent information flowing from the teacher to the student. The spiral is the researcher pulling it all together. Behind the circle is asemic writing symbolizing information.

The collage includes a variety of topics I have investigated. Copper is a warm metallic in combination with the repeating analogous strategy. Due to the individual perception and response that color offers, there is always something new to learn and experience to improve.

aving spent my first 15 years in Japan as a child of missionaries, I find myself drawn to images and art reflecting Japanese ideals.

Earlier in my creative journey I began collecting images of “washitsu” – Japanese style rooms which look out onto lovely outdoor gardens. These portrayed the peaceful safety of the indoors but also the opportunity to gaze toward the lovely outdoor landscape.

My Window series is about interior and exterior, the safety of being hidden and the risk of being exposed or vulnerable.

In this series my art is an exploration of my world and my experience of trying to find a place of belonging. What were the costs of remaining in the safety of isolation? What did I learn from stepping out and allowing myself to be vulnerable? I obsessed about this… I tended to over-analyze my interactions with people and worry what they thought of me, experiencing frustration that I couldn’t get beyond it.

In studying the archetype of the Orphaned Child, I related to the child’s

sense of perseverance, transcending aloneness to find the way and help others find their way. Though not literally orphaned, I had to grow up quickly and find my way without the help of parents who were otherwise occupied.

More recently, I have been drawn to creating work depicting trees and their restorative power. They are often called the lungs of our planet since they convert carbon dioxide into pure, clean oxygen.

They keep us cool and protect us from the sunlight. Many cultures have endorsed the value of spending time in nature to restore our sense of balance and calm.

I primarily use hand dyed or painted cottons, silks and nonwovens but also have a love of Asian fabrics and kimono silks, incorporating these ancient traditional fabrics into my compositions.

Digital photography, manipulation and printing on fabric is also used in my newer work. Use of sheers, couching and fabric paints give a sense of depth and texture. Slightly curving lines portray gracefulness and circles are often present representing wholeness and creativity.

am constantly trying to change the rules! My sense of artistic freedom hails from a rich heritage and legacy of creators in Eastern Virginia. I sometimes have conversations with my ancestors and can deeply feel their input in each piece.

I enjoy incorporating layers of fabric, paint, paper, and dye and even sometimes found objects. I approach each new piece with little to no plan that quickly takes a journey down its own path. Everything I create has an intuitive element with the piece taking control and directing each move. I enjoy pushing design elements to the edge to add excitement and artistic energy.

These two pieces are the result of a day of exploration. I wanted to combine my

love of playing on fabric with a ruling pen with my love of layered paint.

Making new fabric look old. These are created using multiple layers of Gelli prints and India ink.

Isolation - Are you walking out of the door or coming in? This represents the strong Hermit inside. The illegible writing expresses the contradiction of loneliness when in a crowd and comfort in the quiet of being alone.

Unforeseen - What are you seeking?

Mystery? Excitement? Inner peace?

Enlightenment? This Seeker archetype is always looking for the unique unforeseen experience. The unfamiliar excites me and I’ll leave no rock unturned.

ature’s Bounty represents my love for nature and fact that all of my life has been that of a Nature Child.

Being cognizant of my environmental surroundings has been a constant. I am keenly aware of the bounty offered to us every day. As a living being, I contribute to being able to continue to enjoy the bounty for years to come. Living animals have also been part of my life, from cats, dogs and fish to livestock – cattle, horses, and raising turkeys. I have always paid attention to the relationship of insects, birds, reptiles, and other animals to the fauna making up our existence. My personal inspiration arises from what I observe, come to know, and cleave.

This work represents my Nature Child.

Called Nature’s Bounty, I have made a

caftan style wrap using silk textiles I dyed using botanical printing. The plants were either grown in my yard, friends’ yards, or collected responsibly. I selected the pattern Samui Suite from Stitch in Time and adapted it using pattern fabric which has gridlines for designing/shaping and can be sewn together for fitting. Next, I selected a colour palette using similar hues from my stash: laid them out in a pleasing manner and then began cutting shapes to be pieced together — extending beyond pattern edges. I aligned the fronts and balanced the piecing. Seams are all finished using a flat-felled seam technique. The wrap is single layer and designed to flow like a light breeze when wearing. The colours truly reflect all that can be offered through Nature’s Bounty.

started this piece with a plan in mind. I thought I knew what it was going to be about. But along the way I discovered how much I dislike working with tiny pieces. Rather than force my initial vision, I invited my Magical Child to guide my artistic process. I fantasized about what was possible. I played. I explored new techniques.

The piece morphed into something completely different. The doorway

became the central symbol. While a doorway has a particular meaning for me, there is room for you, the viewer, to resonate with that symbol in your own way. When I can achieve that level of duality, of offering suggestions that are open for interpretation, I know I have done my best work. It must be meaningful for me. Equally important to me is that you, the viewer, find your own meaning in the work.

estless, Irritable and Discontent is an ode to the Addict archetype which has found fertile ground within my soul.

Of all my archetypes, no other is as delineated by lightness and darkness as the Addict. White and black with red danger signals running throughout, Restless, Irritable and Discontent is an indication of how black the dark side can become and how white the light can be. On the dark side lies obsession and compulsion, and on the light side is clarity and grace. Red lines and circles caution but do not necessarily guide. And it is in the middle ground where things can become so gray and muddled; for it is in the middle ground that choices must be made. Is today the day I will opt for the comfort of compulsion where there is only the opportunity to obsess? Or is today the day that I will strive for serenity where there is only the opportunity to live life on life’s terms. It seems that it should be an easy choice. But it isn’t. Addiction – the bane and blessing of my life!

Could I have found a better medium to work out some of the issues that surround addictive behavior? Perhaps, but I think not. I learned many of my skills from my mother and one of my aunts as a child, and many additional skills I have either taught myself and or have been fortunate to have other skilled artisans teach me. But what I couldn’t have known when I began was that there is an inherent self-preservation in these activities.

No doubt part of the therapeutic benefit is derived from simply being absorbed by a process. But, for me, at the heart of stitching and making lies a process that allows me to connect to something deeper and bigger than myself. Perhaps it is because the practice of putting pieces of material together to provide protection is as basic to human’s existence as hunting and gathering. Or perhaps it is the meditative nature of drawing a needle in and out of fabric.

All I know is that it works – over and over and over again.

began playing with fibers and dyeing at a very early age with my mother, who was a weaver. I have fond memories of the family, mountain climbing to collect plants for her dyes. After trying many art media and different uses of fibers, I became fascinated with using paint brushes to apply dye to fabrics. Over a decade ago, I began felting, and fell in love with the sculptural qualities of felt while still being a fabric.

My latest work brings dyed fabrics and felting together in the Mother Tree series. Research by Dr. Suzanne Simard and others have shown that Mother Trees are connected to thousands of other trees in the forest below-ground through a vast fungal network. Mother Trees can send nutrients to offspring and other ‘friendly’ trees to help them grow and prosper, or pull nutrients away from or send toxins to trees that threaten her offspring. The Mother Trees series explores different dimensions of the mother archetype, and of being a mother and being mothered.

Our relationships with our mothers are complex; even the best of relationships have their moments. Our relationships with our mothers embody natural tensions as we both try to hold on to what we want to believe, and at the same time differentiate ourselves to be independent and separate from each other.

Mother May I? explores the dynamic we have developed inside ourselves around asking permission of the mother archetype to go forward in our lives, and our fears that our inner mother will say “no, step back three paces.” Like the childhood game, this piece has set the Mother Tree front and center dominating the forest of her offspring, determining who will be nurtured and survive and who will be sent backwards from the rest. Mother May I? – how many times have we each asked that question? And, how much do we let the answer shadow what we do next?

ature has always been my refuge, so I know I have a Nature Child. It was the easiest archetype to select. Many others required a tussle but not this one. I live on a small island, surrounded by beaches, the ocean, forests, and wildlife. This spring, I thought about creating a beach art installation that others could enjoy, photograph, and even add to. I had a plan. There would be an art statement to read, a book to write in, a hashtag to collect photos from others. Then, I second guessed the whole thing and it never came to be. Life got in the way.

Until, I just did it. No plan, no statement, no desire for others to interact or document it, no Committee, no interference. I think my Nature Child got bored with the waiting and decided to just GO FOR IT. What a joy, what a release, what an exciting experience to be creating freely. My Nature Child was giggling away, in love with being unrestricted and spontaneous. Just remembering that day makes me smile.

I felt alive, rejuvenated, happy and joyfilled. Joy is my word for 2021. That day, I found it again. Thank you, Nature Child.

When this show’s deadline started to loom, I could not come up with an idea.

The more I tried, the more the thought of creating something for this exhibit felt rushed, false, and forced. Finally, I decided that it wasn’t coming because I was not ready to bring any new work into being. I had to be OK with not participating.

Then, a friend said, “Didn’t you take pictures of your time at the beach when you were playing? Wasn’t that your Nature Child coming out?” She was right. I thought “What a super idea!”. I could submit my Art Installation. I had had such a fun time making it. It would be a bit rebellious but what the heck. My Highest Potential is to be a Rebel.

But the Committee stepped in and starting talking. That’s ridiculous, don’t even bother – on and on. And I believed it.

Have I not learned anything in this course? I certainly have, but it took some Third Chakra gut instinct work for me to just do it. So I entered it, out of respect for my Nature Child and her joy. I hope it gives you a moment of joy, too.

ne of the consistent threads woven through my CST experience has been the lesson that each archetype has a light side and a shadow side. Paying attention to the shadow instead of avoiding it or dismissing it can foster a more authentic expression of who I am.

If I am not willing to embrace both the light and the shadow, then I am stunting my own development and preventing my growth into wholeness.

Earlier in 2021, I used the medium of Gelli printing to explore the Child archetype with simple silhouettes. In this work, I returned to an early print and wanted to add the element of the shadow. The tall yellow figure is the light side and the mottled blue figure is the shadow side. Layering the silhouette of the child with the jump rope on

top of both the light and the shadow represents my desire to accept both sides of myself.

In preparation to create this work, I wrote my shadow a letter. I wondered what would happen if I invited my shadow out into the light. Would I be afraid of what I see? Would my shadow disappear or would she bask in the attention and step into center stage? What important messages might my shadow Child have to tell me?

Rather than run from my shadow Child, I can listen, learn, and with some effort find a welcome partner who wants the same thing my light Child does: to be recognized and valued. Isn’t it a beautiful irony that my shadow sheds light on me?

rowing up our family of four girls lived in the remnant settlement amidst native bush at Horopito, New Zealand. My younger sister and I played with dolls in the bush, making mud pies and using the rotten logs for money in ‘our shop’ games; we fed animals, and caught freshwater crayfish in the creek.

My dad taught me to knit and to sew with the sewing machine, as well as bush lore. During our extended family gatherings, I listened to stories adults told – sowing the seed for the local history books I have written. I started school at four years old. I am still there, 72 years later. Still learning!

Care of environment, social issues and involvement in Māori community informs my practice. I recycle and colour

my own fabric, often over-printing to enrich layers. I rust and eco dye fabric and I love paper. Narrative has become important to my creative practice.

In this recycled fabric collage the focus is on the child who loves nature; the child who has been nurtured to love all creation. The image, stitched from a 1949 photograph, references that carefree child of the bush, the nature child, holding the hands of grandparents, while inspecting the stones on the road. The stenciled and stitched plants are from my environment, to complement the recycled furniture samples. The lace cloth was from family.

The bush was my cradle and is still my sanctuary.

I

n one defining moment my Magical Child became my Wounded Child, when my father died doing what he loved, flying. I believe the Seeker stepped into my life as my guide, motivating me to seek answers, understanding and truth. The unconscious resilient part of me did not want the trauma to define my life.

Carl Jung’s research and writing has influenced me and opened doors to my creativity. Carolyn Myss’ building on his concepts has helped me to continue to delve further into my unconscious in my quest to understand. Images come forward and my creativity self makes them concrete. Before CST much of my art was done from the unconscious, now the unconscious and conscious have found a symbiotic working relationship.

After identifying the Seeker, I listened to her.

She nudged me to look more deeply into the role tears have played have in my life. I did a quick sketch of tears and wrote a short poem, after tears bubbled up while sharing in a CST group. I knew then that tears would be the subject for my entry into this exhibition.

Tears stem from emotion. There are tears of joy and sadness, and tears that provide clarity. Tears hold stories. Tears have helped me

uncover information. My image is only one aspect of tears. It is about delivering messages. I have learned that if the message has an emotional quality, I must prepare myself for tears. That awareness has become beneficial. The mystical part is that manifesting the image helps dissipate the trigger for the tears. The unconscious and conscious work together creatively to solve what caused anxiety and weakened presentations and arguments in the past.

The first image and poem were quickly sketched in my journal from the unconscious after a tearful incident. I printed an image on silk organza fused on my hand painted cotton fabric. The second image began with intention, to paint flowers catching and transforming tears with petals of beautiful vibrant colors, swirling in Van Gogh fashion.

This painting seems to have taken the path of unconscious to consciousness, ending with the merging of the conscious and unconscious. It portrays the bittersweet understanding of a life well lived. One key was finding a creative life in art at age 50! My art has contributed immensely to a life rich with creativity and contentment that I’m privileged to enjoy in the last decades of my life.

I

have been quilting for over thirty years. What started as a way to pass time and engage in a craft using my hands, has become so much more. The art of quilting has become a major force in my life … it’s a vehicle to challenge my thinking, and develop ways to express myself, as well as a constant reminder that my work is enhanced if I listened to my heart and just take a chance.

I quilt, as textiles provide the opportunity to use a malleable medium that I can cut into at will, and then construct something new and unusual. I appreciate that fabric is so forgiving, and I love the philosophy of those who came before ... mistakes keep us humble. Then there is always a way to address the issue – and seeking the solution is always interesting, and opens another road to be travelled.

I have moved from constructing traditional quilts using the patterns of others to creating quilts that are mine, using contemporary improvisational techniques. The process is fun, challenging, and takes me to a calm place where the work unfolds.

I look forward to embracing new ideas and different concepts as I continue to create contemporary art quilts … where it will lead will be an adventure as I travel down roads that unfold.

he family joke is that I was born clutching a pencil. Put simply, writing and art have played the central role in my life. The eldest of five children and leading a peripatetic early life due to my father’s work, these two things were more than play. They became the way of understanding a shifting world and explaining it to myself.

I have strong Hermit and Seeker archetypes. I often stand back but need to see the things and people who surround me and to discern their essential qualities. This has shaped my working life as a teacher of English and Creative Writing and as weaver and portrait artist.

My Buddhist practice teaches me see directly without judgements. Seeing with my whole being is the best way I know to understand myself and to bear witness to the wonderful diversity of the world we inhabit.

Following a major illness in 2018 I was looking for my way back into art.

I needed my Magical Child again and decided to set myself a challenge that would take me away from the precision of portraiture.

I decided to play with nonrepresentational forms with a limited palette of colours that simply appealed to me. Mars Black, Titanium White, Cadmium Red, and a delicious Phthalo Green were applied to gessoed paper with no outcome intended. Layers were added and overpainted just to enjoy the process of handling the paint.

It was a surprise to step back and see ghostly figures moving across the paper.

I saw the interplay of all my Archetypes, my whole history. Ghosts is the result.

It gave such pleasure and reconnected me with my love of painting. I hope to develop the image into a series of abstract paintings and weavings building on this feeling and these themes.

y life as an artist began at age five when I sat, fascinated by my mom, who sewed away on her original designs for clothing and home décor. I begged for my own sewing machine and the next Christmas I received a toy machine with a hand wheel that I treasured for years, even though it didn’t really sew anything!

My clearest memories as a five-year old are of the quiet, dark convent each week where I learned to make cross stitches as mom worked with the nuns to craft altar linens and vestments from stiff, colorful satin and heavy gold embroidery. My Magical Child archetype created scenarios of reverent processions of priests in those vestments. Thus began a lifelong love for textiles, embroidery and the art and mystery of transforming these materials into things of beauty.

Over the years I have experimented with various surface design and textile processes including hand painting and dyeing, traditional piecing, appliqué, collage, and eventually I turned to designing and fabricating large wall hangings for churches.

The second most important influence in my creative life was growing up in a military

family, and then marrying into the military as well. Despite my loving and close-knit family, I often retreated into a world of romantic, mystical daydreams to fight the fear and loneliness of new places. I found security in the “art” of homemaking and carried my love for a welcoming home and great hospitality throughout all the moves and changes.

Currently I am focusing on symbolism, spirals, kaleidoscopes, and photography in the natural world which has led me to create fiber art that is metaphorical or tells a story.

In reference to this exhibition and the archetypes, I have felt challenged, frustrated and fascinated all at once – for two years! At first, I thought I would do a series, but during the last several weeks I realized that I needed to find my core, make some choices and move on. When I came across this baby photo last week it was like a lightning bolt – my mother’s words rang in my ears, “You were born a free spirit full of gold dust and the ocean, and your arms always reaching up to catch life.” While I will continue to explore my unique archetypes and how I can live more in the light, I am also going to rest in the knowledge that it is enough – I am enough!

am a fiber artist with a lifelong love of color. I developed skills in all needle-crafts, weaving, quilting and embellishment throughout my lifetime.

Today, I primarily work as an artisan dyer; dyeing yarn made from wool of my animals as well as commercial sources. My quilt work tends to be highly symbolic and personal with lots of embellishment and hand work.

Slave to Color is an appliquéd, pieced, and embellished quilt. It was made with hand-dyed cotton fabric, hand-dyed wool yarn, hand-dyed embroidery thread, and beads. This image shows color literally coming from the cosmos through my veins onto my hand-dyed yarn and then offered to the world with my hands.

This image came to me fully formed, much like my colorway inspirations. As I wrote about the Servant archetype these questions from Jane Dunnewold struck me: “Do you see your creative expression as a “mistress?” Does it demand anything of you?”

While the Servant is not one of my inner eight, my art is a demanding mistress.

My dye work demands that I dye every day. My creative spirit is busy all the time.

Creation of my colorways comes to me through dreams and the natural world around me. Just as in Slave to Color, my inspiration comes from the cosmos through my hands and onto the fiber I am dyeing. Through my heart, mind, and hands, beautiful yarn arrives in the world.

he inspiration for this submitted series manifested from a desire to create archetypal imagery that represented my life journey. My archetypes loom large and are powerful – as support for creativity, as well as forces for apathy, inertia, and distraction. Through CST, I found ways to tame their shadow sides and focus on accomplishing artwork. I was most able to manifest ideas by using images of myself as the main character. This particular series is composed of three archetypes: The Eternal Child, The Rebel, and The Seeker.

The Eternal Child is ever playful. Wideeyed, she happily frolics from one side of life to the other, stumbling here and there. Surrounded by vivid colors and candy shapes, she is alive with wonder, vibrant, but her shadow Child is there, too, though pale, and nearly hidden. Resisting rules, constraints, and responsibility, she unwittingly thwarts her growth. She imagines venturing beyond the edges; she remains fenced in, captive within the boundaries of childhood.

The Rebel is just that. She does what she wants, when she wants, convention be damned. She dances like nobody’s watching, and yet…Viewed by others as confident and strong, beneath the surface the shadow Rebel lurks.

Questioning, cowering, trembling, seeking approval from others, she is ofttimes a Rebel without a cause. Railing against restraints, she is a stalwart companion of The Eternal Child, in cahoots with The Gambler and The Trickster. A mighty foursome.

The Seeker is forever on the path to uncover the meaning in life, experiences, and herself. Looking for “the perfect answers,” she knowingly overlooks what is right in front of her eyes. She circles round and round the trees, missing the forest, until it is time to sleep. When she awakens, she begins the journey again.

She knows the answers lie within, “in here,” but the shadow Seeker beckons with the siren song “the answer is out there,” enticing with the hope that one day she will stumble upon herself and begin to live the richer, fuller life she envisions in her dreams.

aised as an Iowa farm girl, I have been an Artist/Creative since childhood. When I was six years-old my mother taught me and my brother to embroider. The pieces weren’t wonderful or beautiful or finished, but it started me on my creative path through life. When I was eight years-old, my mother began teaching me how to sew using the sewing machine. This started with doll clothing and quickly moved into sewing simple clothes for myself. In fact, most of the clothing I wore for the next 20 years I made myself – using and altering patterns.

I continued exploring sewing through two years of college and motherhood – making clothes for myself and my children – often altering the patterns as I wished. After my two children were in school, I went back to college and began studying interior design and eventually achieved a master’s degree.

My thesis focused on historic interior ornamentation and included a study

of the historic stencil ornamentation of the Iowa State Capitol. I was actively involved with the restoration of the interior stencil ornamentation of the Iowa State Capitol. That lead to the development of my own line of stencils.

The barn featured in the piece, Home Again is from my line of stencils.

This all lead to an interior design teaching position at Arizona State University for twenty-one years and later Washington State University for seven years. When I retired, I moved back to my Iowa farmland. Now I find that I am incorporating past creative experiences and nature with newly found methods and adventures, many of which include cloth and sewing – my first two loves. However, I am always open to new methods of creating art. My new adventure is exploring eco printing possibilities with the heat press. This allows me to combine my early farm and outdoor experience with my knowledge of design.

’ve always been drawn to the unfinished, unsung works of fellow textile artists. The unknown, the tossed in a drawer. I think about the why: why was it never finished? Are they like me, always attracted to the next new thing?

Did they suffer a great loss that caused the piece to remain unfinished? Then there are the leftover scraps: the odd pieces that accumulate over time and space in my life… or from the stashes of my fore-bearers. Birth of a Dilettante starts with that premise.

The base of this creation is a piece of unfinished needlepoint that I rescued at a garage sale; the detail of the design mostly stitched, but the background left completely empty.

Inspired by the flowers on the hat, I used my stash of salvaged home dec fabric

samples to create an explosion of leaves and petals. Working from the outside of the canvas toward the central design, the elements were hand sewn onto the canvas.

To complete the design, I used an explosion of various objects and techniques all built from my stash, a little of this and a little of that; antique buttons, old jewelry, handmade flowers from ribbon, silk and trim, crochet button flowers … because what would a dilettante do but crave variety?

The entire piece is designed to pull you into the center, to pay honor to the woman who will never know that her hours of work and a piece left undone, became the foundation for a new creation.

am an artist and meditation and yoga practitioner, related roles that have fed an ongoing practice of reflection and study to understand myself and others.

Exploring symbolic archetypes has become a part of that learning quest.

I was inspired to further illustrate my influential Seeker archetype, continuing the story begun by The Seeker quilt in 2019. Prior to that inspiration, an image began to form with a weathered prayer flag remnant from my garden and paint on commercial cotton cloth.

When considering the archetype, the idea ripened with this image as the starting ground. I chose my drawing of a statue of Buddha, and another based on the eyes from a shrine signifying the

all-seeing ability of the wise, as other representative elements that spoke of my seeking journey. These were printed on silk organza and fused to the cloth.

Final additions of hand embroidered stitches created an interplay of texture between the elements. Hand work, specifically stitch, is my favorite stage in the making process. It is here that I slow down, present, and fully open to the direction of the evolving work.

The Seeker, the driver of my spiritual journey, encourages looking within, and to the wider world for answers to deeper questions. Even when answers are not clear, my Seeker helps me to see with the eyes of my heart.

other of Mother is the beginning of a series exploring the Nurturing Mother archetype. I worked with a prehistory petroglyph symbol from Central Asia interpreting it as the continuance of life through the motherdaughter connection.

The origin of all mothers – the first mother – is shown as the shell at the top, and the last shell is the womb of the future, from which the unborn daughter is yet to come. From the first mother, all mothers are connected to the next mother through their daughters.

I dyed the silk cord the red color of birth blood and it is the umbilical cord connecting all mothers to their daughters both biologically and visually as in this symbol of fecundity.

Mother of pearl shells, an ancient and sacred symbol, were often buried with the dead by early peoples to invoke the Mother Goddess. Here they stand for the mothers’ breasts producing lifesustaining milk made from their blood.

Ten outstretched mothers’ embracing arms also stand for the ten lunar months of pregnancy while the shell circles speak of the full moon, often a time when women give birth.

On another level, this red symbol is a reminder of the Tree of Life and Mother Nature’s role in the continuance of life.

My aim with this series is to get back to honoring women’s life-giving roles during pregnancy and birth, and while nurturing their children.

rowing up in New England and raised by a depression-era baby, I come by my Miser archetype honestly.

Thrift was universally admired and money spent only after due deliberation.

Clothes were routinely passed from one household to another – never mind that one of the households also owned a ski house and a summer house. That my early forays into fiber art were patchwork quilts – traditionally thrift incarnate – is no accident.

The Miser is surrounded by threats great and small, random and targeted,

and believes that the way to security is through material goods, especially money.

In this abstract stitched piece, I show how a Miser has built a circular fortress around her possessions in order to be safe in a chaotic world. Projectiles zoom past with dizzying speed; you never know when disaster could strike next.

For this piece I sketched out a general composition and then added blind stitching for that chaotic, random feel.

was inspired by Carl Jung’s archetype of the Mother. He considered her to be the “most important archetype because it seemed to contain all else.” The Mother archetype represents the caring and kind side of humanity, everything feminine and bigger than life. She is often portrayed as Mary, the Mother of God, the Church, and the earth. She is believed to embody wisdom, love and warmth to those who seek her.

I chose Our Lady of Guadalupe as one representation of Mary in the southwestern culture. This work is entitled Primary Marys. She is depicted in the primary colors of red, blue and yellow as a reference to all the possible

colors of the earth and humanity. For so many people Mary represents women who are courageous, loving, spiritual and visionary.

I am a mixed media artist interested in creating art that is a combination of different mediums. In this piece I began by using hot wax to cover handmade paper as a background. This took several coats of wax to give it some depth. I then used a stencil of Our Lady of Guadalupe and printed it with a combination of cold wax and oil paint. Cold wax shortens the drying time and gives the image some body. The other designs were also made with stencils, cold wax and oil paint.

have played with yarn, thread, fabric, and paper since I was very young.

Born into a family of makers and doers – my father taught photography and printmaking, my mother plant-dyed yarns for her weaving – I had access to materials and tools to make anything I could imagine. As a young teen, I was inspired by the quilt making traditions of North Carolina and started making handstitched scrap quilts, and I learned to weave at Penland School of Crafts. I’m a third-generation weaver, and completed an MFA with a focus in textiles in 2015.

As a poet and artist, I recently co-curated a collaborative exhibit of Text and Textiles, bringing together artists from the Women’s Caucus for Art with poets selected by the NH Poet Laureate, Alice Fogel. The show traveled to nine libraries in New Hampshire over the course

of 2018, and was enhanced by panel discussions, poetry readings, and simple receptions to introduce the collaboration to audiences.

For Questions in the Moonlight, I was inspired by the concept of the Seeker archetype, and envisioned lying in a meadow at the top of a hill, watching the moon rise, and being pulled toward its wisdom and magic. The yellow paper was recycled from notes from a difficult time, and I wanted to transform them into something radiant and uplifting. I collect colorful textured papers, combining them with fabrics and stitching to create artist books and wall pieces. This was sparked by a visiting Japanese artist that stayed in our home when I was a little girl, and who showed us how to make Origami using ordinary, interesting, found papers.

have entered this piece, Me and My Wisdom, as my inspiration for the Seeker/Explorer archetype. I have lived most of my life pursuing the meaning of “Wisdom” and all Her many names: Inana, White Buffalo Woman, Sarasvati, Fatima, Kwan Yen, and Sophia, among many others. I am continually inspired by the presence of the Feminine Spirit of God. I believe that She inhabits all of humankind and brings us the balance that is so necessary for the healing of our world. In many ways this archetypal image also includes Mother, Sage, and Lover. Each of these archetypes are the energies that drive my artistic endeavors.

In Me and My Wisdom, my intention is to illustrate the possibility of Her presence in our lives. I believe I am in relationship

“Wisdom,” my Sophia, is represented by the white figure in the piece who is without human body parts but generates the spiral of Life in her being.

I enjoy the process of using fusible web to create collage-like backgrounds that provide a context for the foreground images. I do all my free motion quilting and surface embellishments with the sewing machine. A developing technique in my work is the use of irregular edges to further the idea of going beyond a worldly statement.

’ve been exploring my world through a camera lens my whole life. In addition, I love the tactile feel of working with textiles. I now combine these two passions into what I call Photo Fiber Panels. A photo capturing a moment of time is created into a work of fiber art.

I strive to shoot Zen-like photos which are printed onto cotton poplin sateen.

These are layered onto silk and linen and embellished with hand embroidery and machine stitching to enhance the photo.

Runaway Train employs the technique of ICM - intentional camera movement, and speaks to the internal loop in my head of how to regain control of my time and life. It is a pull between my Prostitute Archetype (time/value) & Caretaker (job/ family responsibilities) VS. my Seeker

How do I serve those I need to serve, while becoming the Artist I want to be?

I imagined jumping off this children’s train onto the platform; exiting the station and starting up a path to my destination (my studio). This scenario did not sit well with me. I revised the story to “I am the Conductor and the speeding train is a metaphor for my life”… I can dictate the speed of the train… I can invite and un-invite people onto my train. As long as I remember I am the Conductor of my train I will be able to set the pace of my life. With the help of my Prostitute and Caretaker, I will be able to fulfill my Seeker’s desires to live the creative life of an artist seeking to make sense of her world through photos.

his piece evolved in a rather roundabout way.

While incorporating a variety of my skills and interests, it is not typical of my work.

My original intent was to work with my Nature Child archetype. The piece was to include an image of the little girl who grew up on a barrier island along the central Florida Gulf Coast.

Densely populated and well touristed, it was a place of lush tropical foliage and flowers, wild parakeets, color-changing lizards, white sand beaches, and endless sunshine. We played outside nearly every day. Today I live in Saint Petersburg, only an eight-mile drive west to my childhood home. The color-changing lizards are now rare, and the wild parakeets a thing of the past, replaced by wild parrots, and in my neighborhood, strolling peacocks.

This was what I wanted to represent. In July we left Florida for our annual retreat to our seasonal home in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom. I did my best to pack the materials I might need for my creation, but I seemed unable to actually execute it one I began. I never seemed to quite have what I needed. My Child refused to play along!

There were many nights when I tried to solve this dilemma before I went to sleep. Amazingly, although I seldom remember dreams, I woke up

one morning with a vision of the piece I actually needed to make, as well as its name. It was a crocheted sort of nest filled with embellished stones, entitled Earth Mother.

This made so much sense to me. My Nature Child was a Florida girl. She has no reference points for the Vermont woods. Of course, she would have grown up to be an Earth Mother.

(The Mother is one of my personal archetypes.)

Everything I needed was right here. It was with excitement and energy that I began.

My life in the rural Vermont woodlands is very different from my life in Florida. During the twelve plus years we’ve worked on building our place, I have developed a bond with the land.

The trees and the plants are entirely different.

We have wild blueberries, rocks and stones and boulders are everywhere, there are Chickadees and Nuthatches. This is the world Earth Mother comes from.

I used an assortment of yarns to crochet the nest; hammered copper and aluminum wire as embellishments. The stones, pine cone, moss and fungus were collected on our property. I have used two blue jay feathers. The longer one from Vermont for Earth Mother and the smaller one from Florida for Nature Child.

his piece was inspired by my Father’s passing last year, and a series of life altering events, one of them being my health. While recovering, I was viewing a show where this poem was read. It fed my soul and had me in an ugly cry, and it became synonymous with this piece. The archetypes for this piece were the Child and Caretaker. You see, my Father taught me how to grow sunflowers as a little girl and it was my most vivid memory of him immediately after his passing. I can no longer grow sunflowers with my Dad but I have made one in his memory. As I was teaching myself thread sketching on this panel from Frond Designs, I became a child once more as memories of my Dad when I was a little girl came flooding back to me with each stitch made.

This poem played continuously in my mind during the making of this piece. I took care of Dad in his remaining years and will treasure it always. I hope as you read it and look at the piece, it will feed your soul as it did mine.

—Merrit Malloy 60’s Mid-Century Modern – Marbles My Artist archetype was robust here. The challenge was to create a piece where at least 50% of it was circular in nature. I kept thinking of mid-century modern and my brother’s collections of marbles. I was particularly interested in all the different geometric patterns I could make with the circles. The artist goes where the artist goes.

African Print Log Cabin The Student/Artist archetypes were the foundation of this work. It’s a tribute to my aunts. During family reunions they would create some of the most wonderful foods and baked goods from scratch and not a recipe in site. I remember them letting anyone in the kitchen to learn the recipes because nothing was ever written down. You had to watch and guesstimate the measurements.

Similar to my aunts’ formulas for cooking, there was no specifics to picking the pieces, just making a vibrant log cabin design was the goal.

’ve always been a ‘Maker’. I grew up in Australia in a family where sewing and knitting were de rigueur – economical, practical, essential.

I followed the patterns. Conformance was required in all things. My Rebel emerged early, but it had nothing to do with Art. I did my Aussie Walkabout for a couple of years in the US, returning to Australia via Europe. Love and romance brought me back to the US in 1970.

In 1974 I took my first quilt making class and joined guilds and groups. I pursued this creativity joyfully, mostly ‘coloring within the lines’, but never duplicating what someone else had made or the dictates of a pattern. In 1990 I began incorporating photos into my quilts.

My Child archetype card reads: “Embrace now the play of the Magical Child who did not know the hurdles that lay ahead … don’t dwell in the shadows.”

When I decided to submit this piece for the exhibition, I was thinking it represented my Child (and how does our Adult not include our Child?) I considered my Artist journey, begun in 2014 when I took my first drawing and painting

classes. As I glanced back, I realize the 2009 roots of this piece represent my first steps to becoming an Artist. We moved in 2010 and the unfinished triptych remained in the ‘WIP’ box until 2020 (nowhere to display in our now home.)

I was proud of the work. Jane Dunnewold inspired me to rework it.

My red high-tops were gathering dust in the hallway. Purchased especially for wearing to my Tuesday Art Tribe gatherings, worn only once before Covid shut down the Studio.

The creative juices flowed strongly as I deconstructed the earlier work and played with composition. The red zigzag spoke loudly.

Pathway/Journey/Put your shoes on/Leave footprints to show you’ve been here. The quote I chose was a message to myself inspired by the author’s story.

Being a member of CST for several years has given me the courage and support to keep on my creative journey. Adding hand stitching to this piece as the final step seems to bring it full circle and complete this chapter of my Artist story.

y magical grandmother, Marie Whitney Potter, was the family matriarch. I cherish fond memories sitting next to her as she patiently taught me needlework. A gifted storyteller, she entertained me with recollections of her early years. I intended to write a biography of her rich history. However, other passages intervened – marriage, motherhood, and advanced education.

After retiring, my creative interests turned from writing to pursuing art. Embroidery became my narrative.

Carolyn Myss’ Sacred Contracts taught me the language of archetypes. I began to view aspects of my personality through an altered lens. This exploration gave me a greater understanding of the profound influence my ancestors play in shaping my life. A 3-year study of Creative Strength Training has opened new paths of expression. Rather than chronicle my grandmother’s past, I decided to examine it in visual representations.

My series, titled Matriarch, depicts three vignettes from my grandmother’s life as they intersect with my personal archetypes.

She Dreamed of Voting (Advocate Archetype): I created a pictorial saga of women’s suffrage as experienced by four generations of my maternal females. Using a skeleton frame from an antique

parasol, I hand-embroidered the stories of the first votes cast by my great-grandmother (age 68), my grandmother (age 34) my mother (age 21) and myself. In symbols and colors of the Suffragist movement, the streamers declare “Votes for Women.”

Necessity is the Mother of Invention (Victim Archetype): This mixed-media collage is a stitched photograph of my grandmother. Perhaps this is the last picture taken before her world dramatically changed and her beloved house was sold.

Black mourning lace, jet beads and a wrist watch depict the quick passage of her life from happily married wife to young widow with four children to raise. In the midst of the Great Depression, she traversed from a victim of her circumstances to creating a new future.

She Once Lived on Lovers Lane (Lover Archetype): When my grandmother died, I discovered a trunk of her treasured garments. A faded, frayed pink silk kimono was carefully wrapped in tissue, evidence that it held special memories. After surviving for more than 90 years, I decided to revive this tattered remnant, hand embroidering over the original stitches. Another silk Deco kimono, gifted to me by a dear friend, was stitched into the collar, lapels and lining.

find that I resonate with the Dilettante archetype quite strongly in my day-today life. I have many varied interests and hobbies, and often find it very difficult to settle into any one direction for any length of time. There always seem to be side bars popping up in the periphery – ‘what if I do this this’ and ‘what if that’?

This somewhat fractured way of exploring, planning and executing creative work which includes creating garden designs, cooking a recipe, working on a quilt or other art/craft endeavors does have its plus points but there are also quite obvious and sometimes negative side issues. I am trying, and have been trying for quite a while, to train my brain to do one thing at a time. It is a work in progress.

In my piece My Butterfly Brain I used many different techniques, the piece seemed to grow by itself and then all miraculously fit together. The central image is a Gelli plate print of a Ligularia leaf which I have growing in my garden.

I was amazed at how well the print came out; the vein structure of the leaf is very detailed. The butterflies are a commercial fabric which I fussy cut and appliquéd onto the hand dyed background which started life as a 100% white cotton sheeting, I found at the local thrift store and then ice-dyed with Procion MX cold water dyes. As a finish, I couched the silver thread over the main veins of the leaf. This connects the butterflies with my thought process.

he act of creating Warrior helped me understand the archetypes that I embody and those that I have expressed in previous work.

Warrior is a third piece that expresses my deep and intensely-felt concern about the erosion of voting rights in America. I made thermofax screens of different-sized fonts from a compilation of John R. Lewis quotes.

They have comforted me in our turbulent times.

Do not get lost in a sea of despair Do not become bitter or hostile Be hopeful, optimistic!

Never, ever be afraid to make some noise, NOISE! And get into good trouble We will find a way, Make a way Out of NO way The quote is obscured yet visible. The treelike spikes point to physical and emotional strength necessary at times, the ability to protect others and defend their rights. I ask myself: how many pieces will I need to make until our lawmakers lead with courage? That’s how long this beginning series will last.

I made Networker just as the novel Corona virus was emerging. The piece began as an homage to folksinger John Prine, one of the first musical artists to die of Covid-19. A musical artist brings together a network of listeners. I wanted to express the complexity and depth of the ways our lives intersect and give us a sense of community with empathy towards one another. In 2020, we learned to depend on technology to keep our connections alive when we couldn’t touch one another.

I revised Healer for a small solo show in San Francisco’s Chinatown. The exhibit was called Forming Our Future: Culture, Community, Climate. It opened during rumors of a potent virus from which people were dying. Five times, I travelled the 35 miles to San Francisco – January through early March 2020 – each time becoming more apprehensive. A week after closing the show and bringing the pieces home, public health officials mandated that we stay home for our protection. The quiet flow of energy brings me a sense of what we’ve had to do to cope with this pandemic: transform pain into healing.

love to dye-paint. I started as a teenager with black Rit dye in the washing machine to fix faded leotards. That did not end well. I progressed to staining unfinished furniture and cabinets with thinned acrylic paints in bright colors. I made grape vine baskets and they were my next targets to dye.

Several years later I discovered Procion MX dyes, and my art forever changed.

After I started dye painting and designing my own fabric, everything fell into place. I was able to create a personal vocabulary of color and texture. I mix colors spontaneously, always hoping to get the color combination I see in my mind. I use natural and manmade objects as a source of inspiration, with the textures and markings often used as resists with thickened dyes. Nothing is more fun than starting with white fabrics and playing with many different surface design processes. Reminds me of the fun of finger painting as a child.

My intent is to let the fabric speak for itself by designing my quilts around the fabrics I create. Each piece evolves to become its own without my forcing it toward a preconceived idea. Machine and hand stitching complete my process.

My early quilts were traditional bed quilts made for specific people. Selecting just the right patterns, colors, fabrics, and embellishments, to symbolize my relationship with the recipient, and to capture their special qualities gave me great pleasure. In recent years, my exploration has been in the design and creation of art quilts.

As a part of the Creative Strength Training community, I have been exploring archetypes as a means of understanding myself. To enhance that exploration, I am also using the geological concept of stratification as a way to illustrate the variety of

influences that shape our development and attitudes. I think of the influences of family, place, educational opportunities, relationships and more as the strata that have helped to form me. Just as pressure, time, and the elements shape geological structures, many influences have shaped me. I am using textiles to create a series I call My Personal Geology.

Hand-dyed and commercial fabrics, various surface design techniques, both machine and hand quilting, embroidery and beading all support my exploration.

I am using an orb pieced of many different fabrics as the central element in these pieces. To capture the awe and wonder of my magical child, I created My World of Possibilities. In Mending the Hurt, the pieced orb is damaged by cuts and tears. Stitching has mended to orb, making it whole again, but different.

And, perhaps more radiant.

I

am a textile artist who is discovering her distinctive style. My creativity was expressed for decades through sewing, including a business making appliquéd children’s clothes in the 1970s that were sold in retail stores in three states. While I have a science degree, I also completed the coursework, but not the final project, for a master’s degree in Quilt History from the University of Nebraska. The final step on my career path was as the President and CEO of the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, which has a stunning textile collection. Along the way, I kept sewing and made several large, traditional quilts.

It is said that the most successful retirees have something to do when they retire.

Mine was to move into art quilting, which has been a challenging journey. I’ve built skills but I am still searching for my own expression. Joining CST has led me on a more structured path to discover my style as a quilt artist.The challenge of creating a quilt inspired by an archetype led me in a much different direction than I expected. I felt I had to do a realistic or personal piece that was somehow related to my child archetype. I was stymied. Then

I realized I never do realistic work and actually have been wanting to do even more graphic bold pieces. So, I let go of my trying-to-please Dilettante and created non-representational Breakthrough – with big swaths of color, graphic shapes, and interesting textures, made from my hand-dyed fabrics and completed with matchstick quilting.

The question was, how was this inspired by an archetype? I looked to my notes and journal for help. Surprisingly, I found the Rebel. I would never have thought of that!

I follow recipes. I like to be recognized for doing good. I don’t like to challenge or unsettle people. When I do, I dwell on it forever. I’m not a Rebel. Then I read a note in my journal: “Claim your creative self.

Rebelliously protect it and claim it.”

With Breakthrough my art quilting journey has taken a big step. Finally, I gave myself permission to do what I feel compelled to do. By not creating an artwork I felt was expected, I have opened myself to ideas for related works with more to explore within a defined style. I’ve decided I can claim to be a Rebel in my art and still be a nice Dilettante by nature.

was born raised in the country in New Zealand, but have lived in Australia most of my adult life. As a child we moved from town to town which is probably why I now find I have itchy feet and want to keep moving on to the next adventure.

My mother was always sewing or knitting.

That’s where I got my start.

I’ve knitted, sewed, and embroidered all my life. I travelled a lot for work so embroidery became my go to.

Fine art came much later and once that door opened, I became a bit obsessed.

I’ve had some amazing instructors and mentors over the years who have encouraged me to reach further and challenge myself. From oils to acrylics; watercolor to charcoal. Pastels are currently my favorite. Clay was the next adventure. Both the pottery wheel and then sculpting. Building something from nothing is so rewarding. I can get lost for

hours in a sculpture. A great escape after a bad day.

I can’t embroider any longer. But I found another path in surface design. Dyeing.

What an adventure that is. Both chemical (MX dyes) and natural dyes have kept me obsessed for the last seven or eight years.This began with another round of workshops and mentors and finally experimenting in my own studio.

Life is short and I hate wasting useful time so I regularly reflect on what I’ve achieved, am I happy with where I am right now, who I am right now, and where am I heading next. Reflections considers the journey we all take and the choices and reflections we make along the way.

The archetypes that make up who we are guide us on that journey. Embroidery and other stitchery would have been perfect for this so there is also an underlying message …. there is always another way.

grew up in St. Louis drawing, writing poetry, making collages and sewing. My materials were autumn leaves, wallpaper sample books, the Sears catalogue, National Geographic magazines, and scrap fabric from clothes my mother made. After living in Chicago for twentytwo years, I moved to California. My explorations here of natural habitats also inform my art-making.

For many years I could only practice art part-time. In 2020 I retired, to restart life as a full-time artist. I joined Creative Strength Training to give myself a framework in which to develop a practice that would result in a meaningful body of work. I decided to use Archetypes to help me examine my art practice.

I began by inviting my Child, the most elemental of the Archetypes, to help me create a series that would reconnect me with my earliest joys in living and artmaking. My Child is The Magical Child, and because I have always lived in cities, the surprise of nature in my environment

is the most delightful magic. This series illustrates some of these moments.

My intent was to explore a variety of techniques, to clarify what I most enjoy doing.

I composed the series as a whole, then worked on the pieces one at a time, start to finish. I allowed myself to make changes as I worked. For instance, the leaf pattern in Resurgence was added after piecing and the composition in City Dweller was changed as the work progressed.

I started this series in March and completed it in October. Through the process my Magical Child assured me it was ok to play, make mistakes, and take my time. Time to learn that I love dyeing fabric, printing, piecing and hand embellishment. To realize I have always been interested in places where humanmade and natural environments overlap.

To see a way forward into work that more deeply explores these themes.

grew up on the edge of a patch of woods in Vermont. As a young girl, I would wander around the woods, pick wildflowers from ditches and collect rocks that I would put in a shoebox to tuck under my bed. I pretended that I could talk to the animals, dress my dog up in clothes, and strain my head toward the moon if I was lucky enough to have it shine down on my pillow. I was a Nature Child. I belonged to the Earth and the Earth belonged to me. I am now in the middle years of my life. I have traveled down many different educational paths and professions. Some of it was rewarding, but much of it was not. I veered off the path for a while, but I am finding my way back. I am rediscovering the joy of nature and how it speaks to me through my work.

I am a plaster, glass and textile artist, but primarily I create botanical bas reliefs.

It is a process that involves clay and flora to create a template upon which plaster is poured resulting in a reverse image. I will typically use natural mineral pigments acquired from around the world to wash the front. This helps to bring out the details of the plants as well as add a touch of color. For this panel, I decided to leave it neutral to reflect a hint of something past, to the age of my innocence.

My work is ethereal and fragile. It is the manifestation of a personal conversation that I have with plants. I am a self-taught artist on a never-ending journey to express something that is true and of beauty, that will speak to your heart and bring the spirit of nature into your home.

reativity has been essential to me since childhood. I fondly remember being mesmerized as I pushed and pulled my finger paints onto the special slippery paper. As an adult I found my creative soul in the transparency and fluidity of watercolor. Its unpredictable nature spontaneously alters my dialogue with the painting and aligns with my intuitive process. My Artist and Magical Child archetypes are quite comfortable with this arrangement!

Recently, I’ve invited other mediums into my practice; each one has spawned new ideas and inspirations in their own unique way. My experimentation has led to the development of a body of work that is more reflective of my life and emotions, more abstracted and often non-objective in nature. My efforts are influenced by the Magical Child and given free rein by the Dilettante. They are pieces of the puzzle that are me, my life, and my art.

My process begins with setting a personal and focused intention for my expressions of color, shape and line. Then it’s play time! I listen to the painting with an open

mind and invite it to tell me what it needs.

I embrace this method because I find it intriguing and surprising. It’s the way that I celebrate my inspiration – the delightful magic of life on planet earth.

Follow the Sun. Noticing how the effect of sunlight from a nearby window cast areas of shadow and light set me to wondering if I could capture those fleeting moments in a spontaneous application of watercolor.

Literally, the race was on; my brush chasing the sunlight as it sped across the surface.

Strawberry Moon. June’s full moon was also called the strawberry moon by some Native American tribes. This painting was developed with that bit of knowledge as inspiration and the Nature Child painted along side of me.

Discovery. Building layers of acrylic paint and scraping back to reveal the history of the painting inspires thoughts of an archaeological dig. With anticipation of discovery, the Explorer packed her gear and set off for adventure – the layering and excavation began.

n June I focused on my archetypes through the eyes of the Saboteur. I was surprised to discover that the Miser makes a strong showing. The light side of my Miser helps to protect my time, aiding me in making wise choices regarding commitments. For this I am thankful. The shadow side of my Miser “hoards” fabric, and art supplies. I fear using things up so don’t use them at all. I have a very small studio and become frozen when I look around at the abundance and don’t know where to start. My Miser and Saboteur work hand in hand.

I resolved to give my fabric and supplies away or to use them. I gave away the fabric I would likely never use, but couldn’t bear to part with all my scraps and pre-fused fabric. So, I began cutting them up into rectangles. I find rotary cutting with a straight edge to be very soothing. I then began arranging rectangles, using color and value to drive my choices. I wanted to make something very big ending up with a

55” x 18” piece on my design wall. I wanted it to be even bigger but life got in the way.

It still sits on the wall.

I knew I wouldn’t complete this large piece in time for the CST show. I wasn’t sure how to finish it (embellishments? edges? finished size?) so I decided to produce a small piece that would be a study for the larger one. I was having so much fun that two separate series sprouted, so I set it aside to construct other small works. When I returned to My Path is Not Straight the idea for the gold thread emerged and the beads (in my stash and not touched in 15 years) came to represent the distractions that appear to me along my way – beautiful – if I will take the time to enjoy them.

My mind is now full of ideas to continue working on my two series. I also have a plan for the big piece on the design wall, all because I discovered my Miser and followed my not so straight path.

I

am a sculptor who works in clay. In 2021, I created a series of figures in order to embody the energy of archetypes as I understand them.

My Wounded Child was inspired

by Rodin’s The Danaid from Greek mythology. One of 100 women who paid a great price for the sins of their father, her punishment was to try to fill a broken vessel with water. My Wounded Child survived her labors and turned the broken vessel into a shield.

My Victim is bound by a rope that appears to restrain her. In fact, it is actually attached to nothing at all – and she is free. When she realizes this and rises up, the rope serves as a way to set the boundaries she needs to move forward, knowing that she is empowered and not enslaved.

My Saboteur sits on a pair of too-large wooden shoes or “sabot.” They were

worn by peasants who sabotaged the factories where they toiled. One hand on her belly and the other on top of her head, when she closes her eyes, her intuition illuminates the path and her bare feet follow.

Part of an ongoing and ever-evolving series on archetypes, these figurative works began as line drawings and came to life in unfired clay. The images are both familiar and unexpected. My purpose was to find the energy of the archetype in each figure. My attention was on shape and gesture as it was discovered. Working in a small scale, literally on a kitchen table, I left the surfaces rough. I never thought about firing or glazing. I never worried that they would crack. I see them less as unfinished and more as unfinishable. In creating these works, I concentrated on getting out of my head so something only my hands could imagine would emerge.

had no background in sewing, but, when I stopped at my friend’s quilt shop opening in 2009, I was overwhelmed by the colors of the batiks. I have always loved color and wanted to work with fabric from that point on. I learned to hand dye fabric, and, began taking part in Hollis Chatelain’s 10-year Master Classes after seeing the movie, Stitched.

I continue to do Independent Study with her today. I love the process of dye painting and collaging my drawing with the fabric. Feeling the story is an important part of my process.

Cue’s Journey was a cathartic experience for me, as I lost my faithful companion at seven years old recently, from a quick acting cancer. As her Caretaker, I could

not fix her and will forever miss her. I cut up a long-saved, special hand-dyed piece by Pat Pauly to create the sky and mountains. I was inspired by a quote from Caroline Myss: “When seeking to touch the energy of the Divine, we climb symbolically to the top of the mountain.”

I finished by layering a piece of handdyed organza to give it a purple glow.

It was only after it was done, that I saw the owl on the peak and realized the mountains looked like a dove opening its wings, as if embracing.

Bojangle Dance is a tribute to the song “Mr Bojangles” who danced in spite of still grieving the loss of his dog 20 years before.

I think Cue would want me dancing rather than crying, so I dance for her.

o eat an orange is to taste pure sunlight. It is the taste I choose to eat first thing every morning. Orange is a favourite colour showing up in many of my dresses, remembered and often photographed sunrises, sunsets, and flowers of all kinds. It is warm and bright, which can also mean intellectual, and in the softer ginger tones, once my hair. It is the colour of fire; the element where three of my archetypes sit – my Dilettante, Hedonist and Victim.

My Dilettante, whose chakra’s colours are red and yellow, blends my personal power – yellow with security, and red – leading to a determined ego, willing to explore many paths. She has encouraged me to write poetry, make books, take photographs, manipulate them, sew garments, quilts, embroider, but has always longed to paint while the other two are adamant that mark making abstracts are my best option, as my drawing skills are limited.

So, I dash off studies with random brushstrokes and organic squiggles then wonder how these can be useful. I have tried many times to find a path from playing with paint to stitch but I am often more interested in the playing than the developing.

Frustrated, my Victim stuffs these efforts into a drawer and whines quietly that I should do better next time.

Too many ideas coupled with indecision sent me searching through drawers.The word Glow for some reason kept echoing in my head and I found a study of mostly lines and brush strokes in shades and tints of orange that appealed.

My dilettante was delighted, at last a painting!

I traced the line design onto white linen and found all the orange embroidery floss I had on hand. My Hedonist, who always seeks the best wine for dinner, was pleased that there were some lines in tones of red–violet,. It was the perfect burgundy, but the deep indigo of the Victim was not present in the painting. Her complaining in the background would not be silenced.

So, because I have perhaps too often stitched only on white backgrounds I took a photo of the painting, printed it and coloured in the background with an indigo shade and everything popped. The shades of orange, burgundy, yellow, and ginger all became a clear dialogue.

I stitched, adding some single silk yarn gifted me from my weaver brother. It was a perfect addition, as I had run out of orange floss. I painted the background with Inktense blocks and it all became ”a discussion on the line”.

o many things came together to inspire In the Kiva. I was contemplatively reading Ladder to the Light by Steven Charleston, an indigenous elder whose book contains meditations on hope and courage, using the image of climbing up the ladder in a traditional Pueblo and Hopi kiva. I had also just committed to creating an Earth series inspired by my playful Child in mud and dirt, coupled with my adult love, respect and concern for our land and soil.

Then in a discussion with our small CST Creating as Contemplation group, it was an “ah hah” moment: I realized that The Seeker is one of my core archetypes.

The Kiva and the new Earth series were seeking journeys for me. I had rejected The Seeker archetype previously because of its association with being a wanderer or nomad, which are not me. But I have sought spiritual pathways all of my life and continue to do so.

ho am I? That was a difficult question to answer. I was disconnected from myself and no longer knew. A path opened through the consideration of archetypes to find my way back. As I worked out how these characters fit in my play, I examined each one in terms of a set of plants, four flowers and one tree that are innately “home” to me, using their symbolic meanings. The forests of Lake Tahoe are a favorite place. They shared with me wild rose (happiness), Lupine (imagination, recovery), Queen Anne’s Lace (sanctuary), Columbine (fortitude), and Pine (wisdom).

My archetype cards are eco-dyed leaf prints on paper created by layering, wrapping tight, and boiling in onion skin water.

I find the true flowers and plants among the marks and colors created and bring them forward using ink, colored pencil, and paint.

Dilettante – filled with many wild Roses, I am at my happiest making new creations and trying new methods. Exploration is joy aided by Lupine, bringing imagination to the party. Exercising my Dilettante and bringing happiness into my life is my sanctuary, symbolized by the Queen Anne’s Lace tucked among the roses.

Rebel -– I envision that being a Rebel requires huge fortitude supported by imagination. Wisdom is required to balance the Rebel characteristics and make it a positive force. My Rebel level is sporadic, rearing up to save the day in the more extreme situations of my life.

Saboteur – The watcher and guide who has worked overtime for me lately, making me acutely aware of the dark side of my strong Servant archetype. As a positive force, Saboteur uses imagination and wisdom to create recovery.

friend recently commented that I am able to find beauty in things that most people never see. I consider that a compliment as would most who identify as a Nature Child. When I was a child, I spent many moments playing by the Chagrin River and the surrounding woods.

Skipping stones, climbing trees, swinging on vines Tarzan style and collecting treasures from nature. As an adult I have continued to spend time enjoying time out of doors whether in my backyard, hiking in the woods, floating on a stream, or walking on a beach. I collect sticks and stones, seed pods, insect wings, animal bones, shells, leaves, feathers, and other objects I find. I consider all these objects gifts from nature. I take numerous photos on my walking adventures. Lichens, mushrooms, and native flowers are among my favorite subjects.

My process begins with an idea. The many photos I have taken of the woods

are the inspiration for my felt vessel Forest Floor Vessel I and my wall hanging Forest Floor I. I’m not trying to duplicate my photos, but to create my impression of what I have observed.

First, I select the colors of wool I plan to use and any other materials I will use. I decide what the finished size of the piece will be. Wool shrinks during the felting process and I calculate how large the felt layout will be. Felt making is a very tactile and slow meditative process. After the initial layout of the wool, the piece is wet out with soap and water and rubbed gently to achieve a “skin” so the wool holds together but is not yet fully felted. At this point my process becomes intuitive and I respond to the piece by beginning to add surface details. I like to “sleep” on ideas and continually ask myself “what if”.

When I’m satisfied, I complete the felting and finishing process.

M

y quest to make art with meaning greatly deepened when I discovered the creative potential of psychological archetypes through a 2007 class.

For me, creating is an exchange between my rational, verbal, public and my non rational, nonverbal, hidden selves – unknown until I try to create something.

Then, looking at it, I see not only what I had intended, but also something heretofore unrevealed about myself. I turn cold and my scalp prickles: I just revealed the self behind my mask. Becoming more comfortable with those unexpected revelations has been part of this archetypal journey of discovery.

Now the work has meaning and feels as if it happened without me.

I resisted the idea of working in a series – I was already working on a large piece (still in progress) incorporating all twelve archetypes. But a quilt block I had designed could be used to create the small Masks of Integrity in this exhibit. The masks are not mini versions of the sections of the quilt.

Each is its own and contains elements that would not work in the whole quilt but are additional expressions of meaning for me.

Making each was a tiny case study in creative integrity, beginning with having a Queen but knowing nothing more about her. Her first mask completely missed both her truth and mine. The authentic Queen is in the top left corner of the mask collage.

This exhibit also contains a long-unknown face: the Nature Child, so obvious she was invisible. My desire since childhood, to be an artist, had blinded me to all of the hours outside with my dog, with my horse, with a flashlight at the springtime pond to see the singing frogs and toads. My desire for as long as I remember to be an artist fused the Artist and the Child (middle row, first from right.) They cannot be separated.

The Warrior was no mystery at all, but a well-known, usually deplored masculine element of my character, powerful and aggressive – all wrong for a girl who grew up in the ‘50’s. But his mask, like the others, is part of the truth of my being.

He, like the others, has meaning.

aven was inspired by my Wounded Child archetype. The narrative surrounding the egg is my feelings expressed in fabric paint. Crushing and painting silk to simulate an egg where I am safe from the world and the people that don’t want me. My egg has then been beaded and embroidered.

I have my back to you so I don’t see the dislike in your eyes. The egg is nestled on black satin embellished with embroidery.

I have been exploring the crushed silk surface and this is the 3rd in my Child Archetype series.

I

have been drawn to creating with my hands since I learned sewing and quilting at my grandmother’s knee. As an adult, my love of working with textiles led me to fabric surface design classes at the Southwest School of Art, in San Antonio, TX. I learned how to use paints and dyes to create my own fabric designs.

I use my hand-dyed fabrics as a basis for clothing, wall hangings, art quilts, multi-media creations, as well as in doll making.

I enjoy learning new art mediums that are also organic in nature, and have dabbled in painting, collage and assemblage, paper marbling, and most recently, in paper quilling, an ancient art using thin paper strips to create art works that oftentimes resemble paintings.

Working with organic art materials is a spiritual experience for me, keeping me connected to the natural world.

Much of my creative work has been supported by the light side of some of my personal archetypes, especially the Artist, Teacher, Coach, and Midwife. Even though I have not had the privilege of being a biological mother myself, the Midwife archetype has been an especially powerful energy in my life. I have always had a strong desire to aid in “birthing”

the possibilities in people with whom I work either as a professional teacher, a life coach, or spiritual guide and mentor. So, for this catalog’s theme, I chose to do a self-portrait as the Midwife archetype, using paper and paint in a collage. This collage depicts metaphorically how I envision helping to support an individual to take flight, armed with the tools necessary to live a successful life. The birthing can take many forms, such as in the birth of creativity, new ideas, new knowledge, new career, new relationships, new spirituality, etc.

Each of the pieces is a metaphor for the birthing process. The bird represents the many individuals I have assisted in this process of taking flight throughout my life. The dream catcher at the bottom of the golden path holds the promises and dreams of the individual. The wolves watching represent the totems of protection and strength needed for the journey. The owl on my shoulder is my own wisdom keeper, and the moon represents the divine feminine energy that I use in my work. The light from my heart (which resembles a sunrise) along with my hands is given in support of the individual’s birthing as the individual takes flight.

y Nature Child archetype inspires much of my work. I photographed this old Cedar tree one day while out looking for driftwood, and loved the bleached areas and increased texture of the grain.

It reminded me of how beautiful weathered and worn can be; and to celebrate life and the resulting lines and wrinkles.

Understanding and accepting archetypes, especially The Prostitute, has been challenging. However, this work, Stand Tall, is inspired by the light side of the Prostitute archetype.

Access to an iPhone camera, daily walks on a limited route, and the editing available in photo applications has led to observing my environment with fresh eyes and intent.

Pondering the archetypes also led to a renewed interest in family photos from my childhood.

The panel created for Stand Tall is a collage which began with a wayward Sunflower that emerged among the Petunias in our porch flower box. Day after day I observed the Sunflower and took photos as it grew taller and set its first flower just above the

roofline of our home. I created a story around the Sunflower and gave her a female persona. She exemplified the light side of the Prostitute – faith to grow and thrive in a very problematic environment.

I also remembered a photo taken when I was about six years old standing alone with my father’s WWII army shirt and leather football helmet. Rather than playing with dolls, I played army. And of course, I was the leader. The tall shadow, a picture of me taken on one of my daily walks, reflects the little soldier girl and stands behind the child encouraging her to have faith in herself and stand up for what she believes. I imagine the Sunflower as a metaphor to the shadow, both protecting and encouraging the child who would grow up and fulfill her dreams of leadership.

A

s a person I rely on the intuition and instinct that directs most aspects of my life’s paths. Art, relationships, and career, to name a few. Through my art I allow and share a portion of my inner self with the outside world for consideration.

Protection, and the Saboteur. The Rebel continues to push me outside the rules, and peaks out from the shadows. My house is ruled by the Saboteur, which I feel could be the Dilettante’s shadow keeping things stirred up.

The study of archetypes forced me to identify traits that guide my creative directions, both the good and less positive sides. To identify single goals, focus on finishing a series, making a recognizable focal point for my work – these have always been difficult. Am I a textile artist, a functional potter? Do I concentrate on one method to perfection, or dabble in multiple aspects of a technique? Do I stick to art or dog training, horseback riding, or travel?

My Dilettante jumped into a project too large for a short deadline, trying to incorporate beading, stitching, rice paste resist stenciling just learned, revisiting using all hand dyed fabrics, and free motion quilting to create textures. When the machine objected to the fabric thicknesses, hand stitching finished the appliquéd archetype pieces. I love color and used a bold dye palette. My Miser allowed me use the old bolt of twenty-year old muslin, and the Gambler hunched it would all work.

From the beginning, the Dilettante appeared as the head archetype in my house. The constant changing of directions in my art – skipping from one project to another, intrigued by a myriad of possibilities – will apparently always be central to my portrait.

As a critic of the piece, it is not a finished project. There are details that can be added and as well as archetypes. The archetypes will change as life rolls into new phases. I create to allow some of the center figure’s inner thoughts to be shared. To be shared for question, for comment, or not – and just to allow me to be seen. Maybe the ultimate … to be seen.

rowing up overseas, lacking many modern conveniences, I entertained myself with books and my imagination.

Both of my parents taught me to be a maker and problem solver. I made seasonal décor, doll clothes, and turned a tidy cross stitch. I learned to use what is available and create.

drawn to color, especially pinks and reds; my designs are self-made and often include flowers. I use hand-dyed, hand painted and commercial fabrics and experiment with surface design to find new ways to please my eye. My work is often fused, is hand or machine quilted, and includes hand embroidery.

In my early adulthood. I created homes, raised children, earned advanced degrees, and created a life of learning and leading.

I always had a project or three at hand.

In practical ways I continued to use my imagination and create. Now I have found space to just make – taking a path without a designated destination. It is liberating and brings joy! I am inspired by the world around me to continue to problem solve and create.

The Secret Garden represents my seeker; uses hand dyed and painted fabrics to form a pieced background using the Fibonacci sequence. The images are fused and appliquéd, the piece is shaded using Inktense pencils, and hand embroidered and machine quilted.

I

started my artistic journey as an oil painter, but when I visited my first quilt show I became interested in quilts/fiber and never looked back. I can be called either a lifelong learner or a perpetual student, as I've studied with artists, sculptors, quilters and also taken many classes. That being said, I still feel the need to further explore my art.

Fiber is my first love but I also find myself utilizing the expansive world of mixed media. I enjoy taking and using my photos as well as painting on the pieces. In this series I chose mixed media in order to assemble the collages quickly while thinking of my Orphan Child.

I tend to tell stories with a point of view and I like bringing it down to the "lowest

denominator", so my work is minimal … not abstract but simple. The tools I use are secondary to the story I'm trying to communicate.

I became fascinated with the correlation between The Wizard of Oz and the Archetypes. As a person without confidence, I began to view myself as Dorothy and my cat, Lady Jane, as Toto. I particularly related to the Scarecrow for his intelligence, the Lion for being cowardly, and just loved the Tinman's heart.

As the story evolves...we sometimes spend a lifetime looking for what we don't have, when all along it is right there inside of us.

Therefore, following the yellow brick road felt like a journey with a happy ending.

I

have been working in fiber for the past 25 years, after a 20-year career as a potter. My work in both mediums has focused mainly on functionality – it is only more recently that I’ve had the courage to create art quilts that tell a more personal story.

Covid-19 was on the horizon and I was struggling with issues that were related to a brain tumor, metastasized from another cancer diagnosed in 2018. Radiation and surgery quickly followed on March 13,

2020. I came home from the hospital as the pandemic changed our world. I have been cancer-free since that time, yet my constant companion since early 2020 has been this heart-shaped unwelcome visitor who no longer resides in my brain and is difficult to remove from my consciousness. Using MRI scans and software to manipulate the images, I have printed, cut and stitched this guest in an attempt to encourage it to move on.

y life has often been a struggle.

School was always a trial. I enjoyed learning and wanted to create but one teacher told me art was a waste as I had no talent. Devastating. Until, at 28, a dyslexia diagnosis was like prison gates opening.

50s she was diagnosed as paranoid and incarcerated in a psychiatric hospital. Over the rest of her life, she stitched a diary on her jacket, often overlapping statements like ‘I am not big’, ‘I wish to read’, ‘I plunge headlong into disaster’.

Still searching for a creative outlet, I got a Diploma in Interior Design but technical drawing was very limiting, so I learned watercolour painting. I also developed a spiritual practice studying and teaching with The Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids and then practicing Buddhism. My spiritual practice informs everything I do. I trained as a hypnotherapist and began making textile art, enrolling in Sue Stone’s textile courses and later acting as a TA in TextileArtist.org’s Stitch Club.

I was so touched by Agnes’ story I wanted to explore the idea of being locked out of experience by conditions like depression and agoraphobia, both of which I have suffered from. The shadow side of my Wounded Child and Abandoned Child resonated with the sense of being ‘wrong’ and my ‘straitjacket’ took shape.

With art and stitching, air, light and beauty entered my life and I find that the possibilities increase with every day.

I have never made public the struggles I have had but making the jacket has been a vehicle for exploring my own creative journey and making an act of homage to all those who have struggled similarly. I am letting my Magical Child lead these two wounded creatures into the light. I hope Agnes found relief in creating her own story.

I

chose the sanctuary of my creative practice as the space to dwell in during the quarantine forced upon our entire planet. I started learning to stitch portraits and rediscovered embroidery, a favorite childhood recreation. As we entered the second pandemic year – and thanks to the Creative Strength Training program – I reclaimed a prior interest in archetypes as a means to know myself, and a way to trigger and invigorate themes of exploration in my artwork. In turn, the investigation led to a series of self-portraits.

For these latest pieces, I painted fabrics and used drawing, hand-stitching, appliqué and piecing techniques. The synergetic outcome was layered, complex work that signaled a personal artistic landmark.

Cocoon is my self-constructed shroud of well-being and resilience. It was conceived with leftover bits and pieces of materials. The use of gold thread – uncharacteristic in my work -– a metaphor for the act of expression itself: purposeful, optimistic defiance in the face of uncertainty and fear.

In Tentacles the cocoon has become my life-sustaining shell. Each of my tentacles stands as a symbol for the individual archetypes I recognize as mine. (I had identified seven at the time I started work on this piece). I peek out tentatively from the depths, haltingly – simultaneously hopeful and hesitant – as the world attempts to reinstate a sense of normalcy, while the virus continues its fatally repetitive trajectory.
