On such a hot summer day, Happy birthday is what I wanted to hear. Not just from them, but from you.

For the past 8 years, this date had been special. Not just for me, but for you too.

The morning sun has crept through and like any other day,

I let it shine . But today’s darkness was new.

Without you, the sun still shined bright onto the wooden floor, where I sat, waiting for you. On my birthday. Feeling the breeze as it also crept thru the curtains.

In my room where my imagination lived, I waited for you. And for some reason I never played with the thoughts of you not being here, on my birthday

Jasmine Smith is in her first year at Bard Microcollege Holyoke. She will graduate with her Associate in Arts in 2022.
