MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

AND THE PRESIDENT & CEO

Much of the work that EduNova has undertaken over the past year can be summed up by the aphorism, “A rising tide lifts all boats,” as our work has been grounded in the understanding that our efforts to support new and returning international students in the province will benefit all our members, schools and partners and international students in the province.

Helen Keller’s quote, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much,” also represents the main idea of the vision and mission of EduNova. EduNova’s best work represents connection, collaboration, and community. We recognize that collaboration is often challenging, as our institutional policies are not always designed to share - whether that is in-market intelligence, student enrolment data, or intellectual property. Yet together, we have created numerous examples of how we continue to find ways to overcome these challenges to work to collectively support international students, often in the face of obstacles and adversity, which we affectionately call “co-opitition.”

Q&A WITH LENKA VYBOSTEKOVA

What do you love most about CLLC?

I love how professional they are. I think their system of teaching English is very efficient. I love the international vibe and kind environment. Every student can feel accepted as they are. Also, CLLC provides many after-school activities and tips to do in the city. They simply care.

What/Who inspires you most at CLLC?

The teachers. They are so smart and respectful to students. And I believe they must have a lot of patience. I like that they try to find nuances about student´s country or life. I admire them for their work.

How has your life changed since coming to CLLC?

I realized that it is possible to learn English. Often when you try to improve your English, you start attending English courses in your country and they are generally not efficient, so you become frustrated and give up. Now I am 35 and not only do I feel confident using English in private relationships but also in working environments. This leads to better job opportunities. I like the mentality of Canadians and namely Nova Scotians. I have traveled all around Canada and I find Nova Scotians are the nicest people I have ever met.

What would you say to others who might be considering Nova Scotia for study or longterm stay?

I highly recommend they do. I chose Halifax for many reasons. First, I wanted to study in a city which is not so big, busy and overcrowded (such as Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Ottawa) – I have visited all of them and Halifax is still number one.

Second the cost of living in Halifax is incomparable.

The last, but not least – people and nature. I think Nova Scotia is not so renowned as other provinces, but I hope it is going to change, because here is everything – beaches, lakes, ocean, sport activities, social life, kind people. Moreover, ones who want to stay for long-term, for getting PR, they need only 3 years of living in Nova Scotia compared to some other provinces where 5 years is necessary.

What opportunities have you had to get involved on campus and in your community?

During studies students can make friends and of course, CLLC organizes after-school activities almost every day where everybody can participate.

Q&A WITH GUANGYU JIANG

What do you love most about CBLC?

Each teacher has unique characteristics. Even if some teachers are strict, I can sense their genuine concern for the students beneath their strict exterior. Most importantly, I can feel their passion for teaching.

What’s your favorite memory of being on campus?

The school has excellent facilities, and the teachers and classmates are very friendly, showing mutual respect. Once, while I was passing by the school’s sports field, I came across a class having a physical education lesson. My friend and I asked if we could join them in playing ball, and we were warmly invited. After the class, we even received gifts as a gesture of their kindness.

What opportunities have you had to get involved on campus and in your community?

I have participated in many school activities, such as watching basketball and football matches, attending music concerts, and so on. Additionally, I have also organized numerous small-scale events with my friends in the public areas of the campus.

How have others helped you in your journey in Nova Scotia?

The locals are extremely warm-hearted, and whenever I encounter any questions or uncertainties in daily life, I can ask them without hesitation. They are always willing to help and provide assistance.

What would you say to others who might be considering Nova Scotia for study or longterm stay?

If you come to Cape Breton from a different country, it’s important to be prepared as the way of life here may differ from what you’re accustomed to. Adjusting to a new environment can be challenging, but there’s no need to worry. The locals are very helpful and friendly, which is a great start. It’s advisable to do research and take the time to learn about the place before arriving. Cape Breton offers a comfortable environment for everyone.

How would you describe your circle of friends in Nova Scotia? Have your interactions with them changed your viewpoints on life, work, community, family, etc.?

I have visited cities like Toronto and Halifax, and in my opinion, the people of Cape Breton are incredibly friendly and welcoming. Even as international students who were initially strangers, we quickly assimilated and got used to this friendly atmosphere. Thanks to such warmth and trust, my social circle expanded rapidly. I established connections with the director of a local art center and the coordinator of a volunteer organization in the Sydney mining district. I participated in community activities, crafting, and chatting with local friends.

What opportunities have you had to get involved on campus and in your community?

I volunteered at a food bank.

What’s your favorite memory of being on campus?

The activities where various groups (levels) were brought together are my favorite memory of being on campus. I really liked being able to share with people from other parts of the world, learn from them, and challenge myself to practice my English because no one else there spoke Spanish.

How have others helped you in your journey in Nova Scotia?

It is not a secret that immigrating by yourself can be a very tough process. Like I said before, my friends here are like my family now, I found a job and every day I learn to be part of this beautiful community.

What/Who inspires you most at HLIC?

Baan is who inspired me the most during my process at HLIC. She was the first teacher I had when I started there, she was the kindest, and most patient person I’ve ever met. 43

Q&A WITH JINGLING LI

What do you love most about OIH?

As you can imagine, being a dozen time zones away, on the other side of the globe, can be a difficult acclimatization process. But I had a great time at OIH. Everyone I met was amiable and welcoming. The academic atmosphere here is intense. I even worked until the wee hours of the morning to finish my first week of homework. At the same time, the interpersonal relationship here is friendly and relaxed. I feel very comfortable here. This feeling allows me to focus on my studies.

What opportunities have you had to get involved on campus and in your community?

My teacher Ashleigh makes an event calendar every month. It allowed me to discover many lovely places and new knowledge in Halifax. I went to the Halifax Moose head ice hockey game and the Thunderbird lacrosse game with my family. While I was in class, my husband and daughter went to the Halifax Citadel, Natural History Museum, Discovery Center, and Emera Oval. We also had the opportunity to learn about Rita Joe and her poetry, aboriginal music and culture. These have made me understand and like this place better.

What/Who inspires you most at OIH?

Lorne Buick, who possessed a vast amount of knowledge. Mr. Buick carefully selected his words while teaching us grammar and vocabulary to ensure we fully comprehended the concepts. In addition, he utilized a wide range of sources, from ancient history to current events, to provide a comprehensive understanding of the subject matter.

What’s your favourite memory of being on campus?

During my first school weekend, my assignment was to write an essay about successful entrepreneurs. I must read materials, check media credibility, translate materials and write articles. These are all new challenges for me. But, again, they were challenges I could complete thanks to the teacher’s guidance and the given framework.

What would you say to others who might be considering Nova Scotia for study or longterm stay?

If you enjoy nature and outdoor activities, along with warm weather and delicious food, Halifax is a great destination to consider. The locals are known for their warmth and friendliness, and there is an abundance of libraries, museums, and social events to help you quickly feel at home.

How have others helped you in your journey in Nova Scotia?

I’m so grateful for the people I met in Halifax! Penny, the product manager at IOH, was incredibly friendly and approachable - she helped me feel at ease. When I arrived in Halifax, she solved all my doubts about living and studying here. And Vivian, my classmate, was an exceptional study partner. We worked together seamlessly, and I learned so much from her. Even my landlord provided cat litter and food for my cat before I arrived, even though I didn’t mention it. Thanks to these incredible people, I felt warmly welcomed to Halifax despite the chilly weather.

What would you say to others who might be considering Nova Scotia for study or longterm stay?

Be open to any opportunity out there, be bold, do not fear failure or rejection, make sure that your values and morals are in the right place, if they are, then you will find good people to support you and good people will find you and guide you along the whichever journey you choose to embark in.

What’s your favorite memory of being on campus?

Realizing that no one knows what they are doing, every student has their own struggles, their own insecurities, we are all in the same boat, 3-6 classes a semester, everyone is worrying about everything and most people don’t realize that there are a lot of support systems to help students succeed.

How has your life changed since coming to Acadia University?

I spent 4 years of my life here, it’s safe to say that I wasn’t half the person I am today, everything from how I look, to how I think, speak and interact with others has drastically changed since I came here to Canada. I can analyze problems more clearly and focus on finding solutions instead of focusing on the problem, I am able to understand others and their perspectives/experiences in a more comprehensive way than before, I was introduced to Canadian culture and had to adapt to it while still keeping my own culture and practices alive within me and my daily routine.

Q&A WITH VINH TIEN PHAM

What do you love most about MSVU?

This is a tricky question because there are so many reasons that made me fall in love with this picturesque university looking over the Bedford Basin, but as I have to choose, I would say the small community that the Mount has.

What opportunities have you had to get involved on campus and in your community?

There are many events lining up throughout the year happening both online and on campus, such as during Orientation Week, MSVU 150 Anniversary events, societies’ events, weekly social hangouts at the Students’ Union pub... which allow me and many other MSVU students to meet and greet with new people.

What/Who inspires you most at MSVU?

I think Dr. Ellen Shaffner of the Department of Communication Studies inspired me the most at MSVU.

What’s your favorite memory of being on campus?

My favorite memory of being on campus must be the first time I saw the view of Bedford Basin from the Evaristus building on a sunny afternoon. The blue of the ocean next to the green of the grass sparkling under the golden September sun - all mixed together, making a picturesque view that I never forgot.

What would you say to others who might be considering Nova Scotia for study or longterm stay?

My advice to anyone who is in the process of considering Nova Scotia as their next destination to study or settle down is that - they better act fast.

Nova Scotia is advertised as the ocean playground of Canada, and it really is. Being connected to the ocean is one of the most wonderful things that happened in my life because I feel like the ocean will give people breaks to balance their minds from the hustle and bustle of work/ study life. This elevates your quality of life and level of happiness - the core meaning of life before other achievements.

How has your life changed since coming to MSVU?

MSVU offers a top-notch co-op program where I can grow tremendously in professional practice before graduation. From my experience working in real organizations in the province (I have two so far, one with Halifax Partnership and another with the Province of Nova Scotia), I’ve got many chances to fully apply what I learned from the school and tested what works or not - then brought it back to the class for discussion when we returned to school. I also built my network with professionals in the field along the way, as well as feel more prepared when I enter the industry after graduation.

Q&A WITH LEONARDO SILVA

What do you love most about NSCC?

The welcoming and friendly atmosphere is the thing that impressed me since day one at NSCC Akerley Campus. Everyone there wants to make you feel comfortable and at home, even if you have come from another country like me.

What opportunities have you had to get involved on campus and in your community?

I happened to be chosen to take over the NSCC Instagram account for a day to share with its followers what a day in the life of a Business Hospitality student looks like. I had so much fun doing that.

What/Who inspires you most at NSCC?

It is impossible for me to name just one person that inspired me there. All faculty and staff at NSCC made it so special that everyone inspired me to become a better person.

What’s your favorite memory of being on campus?

The friends I made throughout my time at NSCC, that will be a part of me for the rest of my life. Another memory is when I was chosen to speak for over 300 people at the opening of 2023 Touch of Class, which is an event pulled together by students and faculty to showcase the students’ knowledge and experience to the community, this is one of my favorite memories from NSCC.

What would you say to others who might be considering Nova Scotia for study or longterm stay?

Nova Scotia is a great place to live. Halifax is a city that is large enough to provide whatever activity or service you need, but at the same time with loads of things to do outdoors to explore nature in every season. The colleges in Nova Scotia are more affordable than other provinces. The tourism and hospitality industry is thriving, there are lots of opportunities throughout the city and province

How has your life changed since coming to NSCC?

First, I had to move from Brazil to Canada, which is a great change by itself, I feel that having to adapt with the climate and weather has taught me a lot. Spending the last 2 years attending NSCC brought me lots of opportunities to connect with so many amazing people, and everyone brings something that you can learn.

How have others helped you in your journey in Nova Scotia?

I got support from a bunch of people, mostly from the Brazilian community in Halifax and Dartmouth. Especially with the initial months in here in Canada, with the sharing of information that helped me and my wife to settle in our new home.

Q&A WITH HESHAN PALLIYAGURUGE

What do you love most about SMU?

I love the community at SMU and the great Finance and Accounting professors who are very helpful and eager to help whenever I run into issues understanding certain concepts. They also offer a wide array of supports for students such as the Writing Center, Peer Academic Support, office hours etc.

What opportunities have you had to get involved on campus and in your community?

Securing my first job at the Centre for New Students provided me a great way to get connected with new students, faculty and other departments at Saint Mary’s which enriched my experience at SMU. Additionally, I have actively participated in a number of events on behalf of the Sobey School of Business, providing invaluable insights and perspectives from a student’s point of view.

What/Who inspires you most at SMU?

Two professors that really helped me to do better were Dr. Mahmoud Mohd and Prof. Charles Baxter. These professors gave me valuable advice during office hours, which helped me master concepts in finance and accounting. They also helped encourage me to pursue CPA and CFA designations. Another source of inspiration are my fellow peers as their dedication to studies and doing well truly made me strive to perform to the best of my ability.

What’s your favorite memory of being on campus?

It was welcome weeks of 2021 where I met my amazing friends and are still very close with them today.

What would you say to others who might be considering Nova Scotia for study or longterm stay?

My advice would be to not be afraid to put yourself out there as being uncomfortable is where you will see the most growth as a person. Additionally, be prepared for the tough days when you will miss home. I have found the key to overcoming this is to remember the reason why you wanted to study abroad in the first place and to build your support system early. Halifax also has a diverse community so make sure to check out events that happen around the city to meet with others from your home country!

How has your life changed since coming to SMU?

It has provided me with numerous perspectives in life and I have become more appreciative of the things that I have. In addition, the wide international focus of SMU has also provided me the opportunity to learn about different cultures and respect them more. It has also made me aspire to work hard and perform every task to the best of my ability.

How have others helped you in your journey in Nova Scotia?

I would have to begin with my workplace at the Centre for New Students who provided great references to secure my first co-op position at Sobeys which has truly propelled my career and gave me a solid foundation to begin after I graduate. In addition, my friends have also helped me tremendously with tough times as they were the ones who made Halifax feel as my home away from home.

Q&A WITH AWELE OYE-ONWUKA

What would you say to others who might be considering Nova Scotia for study or longterm stay?

Nova Scotia is the place to study and/or make your home. Not only is it beautiful, but the people are also so warm and kind. I have found that it is easy to settle in and I look forward to what the future holds. If you are considering moving to Nova Scotia, I would strongly recommend it!

What/Who inspires you most at StFX?

The culture at StFX inspires me—the culture of community and comradery motivates me to get out in my community, get involved, and be of service.

How have others helped you in your journey in Nova Scotia?

My friends, professors, and people in general have supported me in numerous ways—from restaurant recommendations to helping me settle in, I have been fortunate to meet amazing people who have shown me so much kindness.

How would you describe your circle of friends in Nova Scotia?

My involvement in various societies on campus has exposed me to a wide range of people, thus, I would describe my circle of friends as diverse. I have friends older than me, younger than me, who play sports, are of different religions, etc. My interactions with them have influenced my outlook on life, community, and family: I have a more robust sense of the world and it’s all because I am fortunate to converse with people who differ from me.

What do you love most about StFX?

Our close-knit community and how friendly everyone is—on and off campus.

What opportunities have you had to get involved on campus and in your community?

I am currently a tour guide and community advisor at StFX. Within the business school, I was the Director of Events on the Women in Business Society and the Vice President of Community Outreach on the Schwartz Business Society last year.

How has your life changed since coming to StFX?

Since coming to StFX, my confidence has grown so much. I had the opportunity to put myself out there and have been introduced to so many wonderful people as a result. I am not the same woman I was in my first year—for the better—and my growth is evident. I am more willing to take risks and explore new fields.

What’s your favorite memory of being on campus?

I have so many but at the top of my list is the annual business banquet hosted by The Schwartz Business Society. I have had the pleasure of attending the last two banquets; business students and faculty come together and celebrate the year. It is a special time because despite our varying schedules we are all in the same space celebrating the year we’ve had.

Elizabeth moved to Nova Scotia in 2018. She spent a brief stint at Dalhousie University before settling on the four-year Bachelor of Journalism program at the University of King’s College. Working on stories and assignments all over Halifax helped her learn more about its history and culture, creating a stronger sense of connection to the province and helping Elizabeth get a sense of stability.

Q&A WITH NERISSA ZHANG

What do you love most about UKC?

What I love most about UKC is the balanced blend of challenges and support it offers to students. The challenges help in personal growth, while the small, tightly-knit community provides a safe and nurturing environment. Our president’s accessibility and his effort to remember students’ names and backgrounds create a familial atmosphere. I appreciate the common bond formed through the Foundation Year Program (FYP), which often serves as an icebreaker among students. Also, the sense of connection is extended through the strong alumni association, making the experience at UKC truly unique and endearing.

What opportunities have you had to get involved on campus and in your community?

During my time at King’s, I participated in the Liberal Arts Passport to Innovation program as part of Experiential Learning program. This wasn’t just classroom learning; it was about understanding how my skills could work in the real world. Then came the hands-on stuff: I did an internship at Facilities Management at the University of King’s College, where I got into the nitty-gritty of managing an asset database. I also got involved with the Books by Heart project, handing out free e-books and audiobooks to people in Nova Scotia who needed them. All these experiences didn’t just add lines to my resume – they shaped me, gave me confidence, and showed me that what I learned at King’s had real value out in the world. It was more than preparation; it was a glimpse into life after graduation, and I’m grateful for every bit of it.

What’s your favorite memory of being on campus?

My favorite memory from being on campus goes back to my first year during a severe storm that coated everything in ice and snow. My friend and I, both 18 at the time, were caught up in a lively discussion about philosophy and literature as we braved the weather, walking across the campus. The conversation didn’t stop at the classroom door – it continued into a small tutorial led by my brilliant tutor, Dr. Curran. He was always full of wisdom, guiding the discussion and enriching our understanding by providing more background knowledge after every lecture. The way the class engaged with one another, the way Dr. Curran challenged and supported us – it all came together in an enlightening experience. It’s a memory that I still look back on, not just for what I learned but for how it made me feel about education and my place in it.

What would you say to others who might be considering Nova Scotia for study or longterm stay?

Halifax, Nova Scotia is a place where you’ll find more than you might expect. It’s friendly, and the people here make you feel at home from day one. If you’re looking for the buzz of city life, it’s right here, but if you want to slow down and enjoy a more touristy, relaxed vibe, that’s here too. Getting around is a breeze, even if you don’t have a car, and you’re never far from a beach or the ocean. Plus, it’s a city on the move, growing and developing, so there are more and more opportunities cropping up all the time. Local vintage shops, cafes, unique restaurants – whether it’s studying or settling down, Halifax has something to offer.

IMMIGRANT IMPACT STORIES

EduNova has completed a collateral development campaign supported by the Nova Scotia Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration and in partnership with National Public Relations. The campaign drew upon the varied experiences of 10 recent international graduates from post-secondary institutions across the province. It resulted in 10 long-form documentary-style written testimonials, high-quality still portraits and video testimonials from each of the student subjects.

The testimonials focused on the theme of the things that bring these students joy in their new surroundings, and they were encouraged to describe the challenge of being a newcomer to Nova Scotia, along with how they each found a resolution to these challenges – most often with support from Nova Scotians. The collateral, which is currently displayed on the EduNova YouTube channel, will be available via the new Discover Nova Scotia Hub and will be deployed as part of future Study in Nova Scotia marketing campaigns.
