Networks of Expertise on Cancer Prevention:

Creation to Implementation

JANE-2 is an ambitious Joint Action under the EU4Health Programme, stemming from Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan (EBCP), that aims at building seven new Networks of Expertise in the area of oncology, promoting cross-border collaboration through health networking.

€40.5 million in co-financing from the European Union

29 European Countries 7 Networks of Expertise across Europe 92 Affiliated Entities & 3 Associated Partners 4 Years

Work Package 8 is dedicated to establishing a pan-European Network of Expertise focused on personalised primary and secondary cancer prevention. By integrating genetic, lifestyle, and environmental factors, we aim to deliver evidence-based, tailored prevention strategies that empower citizens and support healthier communities.

Leader

Mission:

To improve health outcomes through interdisciplinary collaboration, aligning cutting-edge science, clinical practice and person-centred strategies for cancer prevention.

Brings together 30+ expert institutions across Europe.

Co-Leader

Stefania Boccia

Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino GemelliUniversità Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (FPG, UCSC - IT)

Build interdisciplinary collaborations and tools for personalised prevention

Develop education, training, and health literacy programs

Align policies by using AI-driven analyses of omics and social determinants of health data

Raise public awareness, engage policymakers, and foster equitable access to personalised prevention

WP 8 - Scientific Core Tasks (T8.1–T8.5)

From Research to Real-World Impact

WP8 encompasses five core scientific tasks addressing risk prediction, policy integration, lifestyle factors, and targeted education to personalise and improve cancer prevention strategies across Europe.

T8.1 – Education, Training & Healt

iteracy

Identifies gaps in cancer prevention education and develops training programmes and twinning partnerships to improve healthcare professionals competence and public awareness.

Béatrice Fervers   Unicancer - France

T8.2 – Health Policy ⚕️

Maps and supports the development of personalised cancer prevention policies by using AI-driven analyses of omics and social determinants of health data. Co-develops standards and indicators with policymakers, to guide equitable, evidenced-based personalised cancer prevention strategies across Europe.

T8.4 – Omics & Clinical Utility Mapping

Maps existing personalised primary and secondary prevention approaches focusing on clinical utility by conducting systematic literature reviews on omics science.

T8.3 – Lifestyle Aspects

Explores modifiable lifestyle factors using the exposome paradigm and develops integrated personal risk scores combining omics, lifestyle and environmental data.

T8.5 – Genetic & Epigenetic Risk

Identifies risk assessment and management approaches by conducting systematic reviews on moderate penetrance genes and (epi)genetic predictors of lung/pancreatic cancer, and through surveys on implementation of preventive strategies for BRCA/Lynch carriers.

Daniela Turchetti
Denis Sarigiannis NHRF - Greece

WP 8 Transversal Tasks (T8.6–T8.10)

Building a Sustainable and Collaborative Ecosystem

Transversal tasks underpin WP8 by ensuring quality, visibility, long-term impact, and strategic alignment with European and international initiatives.

T8.6 – Dissemination & Health Campaigns

Coordinates public awareness campaigns, digital outreach, and workshops. Engages healthcare stakeholders and mobilises community actors to promote prevention messages.

T8.7 – Evaluation

Monitors implementation, impact, and quality through defined KPIs, stakeholder feedback, and structured evaluation tools.

T8.8 – Governance

Establishes transparent, accountable, and efficient mechanisms for overseeing and coordinating the network. Aims to enhance collaboration, coordination and alignment among partners involved in personalised cancer prevention.

T8.9 – Sustainability

Facilitates long-term integration of personalised prevention into healthcare systems through policy embedding, resource mobilisation, and partnerships.

T8.10 – International Collaboration (JANE-2 EUnetCCC)

Strengthens synergies with EUnetCCC and other EU-level cancer projects, fostering crossborder knowledge exchange and prevention alignment.

The Network of Expertise

Outputs, Outcomes and Impact

How the JANE 2 is advancing personalised cancer prevention across Europe

An EU-wide, interdisciplinary network that enables continuous collaboration beyond the duration of the project supporting policy, practice, and research.

Recommendations for Personalised Prevention

A set of evidence-based, expertdeveloped guidelines for preventing cancer before it starts — using individual risk profiles that include genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors.

Empowers professionals to tailor prevention advice to individuals

Encourages citizens to act early based on personal risk Supports countries in building modern, data-driven prevention programs

Systematic

L ocal: Improved clinician capacity, education access, public awareness National: Policy recommendations, standardised approaches, equity focus European: Contributes to EU Cancer Plan , links national and european strategies for a unified approach. Global: International collaboration on screening standards and prevention alignment

Recommendations for Personalised Screening

Guidance for smarter, more targeted screening — integrating genetic risk, health inequities and access barriers.

Improves early detection for cancers like breast, cervical, and ovarian Increases screening efficiency and reduces unnecessary procedures Promotes equity by focusing on high-risk or underserved population

Twinning Programme on Personalised Prevention and Screening

Pilot collaborations between cancer centres to share expertise, build capacity, and co-implement screening strategies.

Strengthens institutional capacity in personalised prevention

Reduces gaps between countries in prevention delivery Accelerates uptake of innovative approaches across Europe
