There is always a new frontier somewhere. Cannabis is definitely one of them.

T

he Wild West of Cannabis analogy is accurate and tens of thousands have spent the last couple of years living it, staking a claim, amidst a get-richquick frenzy at times, with plenty of scammers, a lot of lawyers but no cops. No one’s been shot yet. Those who got rich in 1849 were selling shovels, which were critically needed, as are lawyers today. Many of those who did find gold were killed in the process or soon went broke. Many did it for the adventure.

Gold, like oil, is not renewable. You can’t grow it, eat it, make clothes, medicine or housing from it, unlike hemp.

Gold might be in the soil, but hemp can clean the soil.

Getting rich is what individuals do, sometimes quickly.

Prosperity is for the community and it can take a while.

For once maybe the word prosperity can have some substance if people start to take hemp seriously, after 80+ years of negative advertising. Knowledge is power. That’s what they told us at Roosevelt Jr High in Beloit in 1971.

My work includes selling science and technology to the public in the form of science museums, starting with the Hong Kong Science Museum as part of a Portland design firm. It was completed in 1991, with the looming threat of China taking over from Britain(!). I went on to do similar museums, environmental design projects and corporate exhibitions, even for WalMart, that usually had some connection to science and technology. My position at the architecture firm Perkins + Will first connected me with Georgia Tech in 1999, and which continues today.

When aquaponics first emerged in 2008, I began collabortating with global leaders in that field, wrote three books and was connecting it with Gateway Tech’s Water Technology program in Kenosha. Aquaponics led me to hemp in 2018, related to the Mitchell Park greenhouses in Milwaukee. I am currently working with Chef Adam Navidi in Orange County, CA on an aquaponics farm/ restaurant.

The cannabis economy can be owned by the community and the innovators can still get rich. That may have been the vision of UW’s A.H. Wright in 1918, and it’s what drives the fledgling industry today. Yes, there have been losers, but the real winners are losers who keep going, no matter what!

The good news is that the core of “the industry”today represents authentic American values, a nice blend of oldschool rural conservatism with the vision of progressive innovators, pitching in to restore what we all love about small town America.

The group we assembled for this virtual exposition is the right kind of mix for Wisconsin in 2020. Everyone’s been well-tested and is in it for the long haul. The goal is to enable the new leaders, those who might be twelve or sixteen years old today, living in Milwaukee or Mazomanie.

Cannabis really is an amazing plant and what we’ve learned is mostly how little we know about its economic and environmental potential.

Learning From Bio-Sunn, Winter 2020 In Which Rural North Dakota Meets the Surreal World Of The Ultra-Rich.

A

fter our Georgia Tech conference last year I was engaged with WI agencies about hosting a followup conference in Madison to nail down some of these same topics, to bring focus and finance to a new hemp industry, with Wisconsin as the state to do it and to do it right. There was a rumor of a pending announcement by a startup company, which would basically recenter the whole hemp industry to the upper Midwest. I eventually learned that it was called BioSunn. In my role of connector I called up the CEO in North Dakota, to find out what was going on. This was in mid-January. He and his managing partner for Wisconsin seemed to be in a great position to really launch this as a major enterprise. They were in need of help finding $1.2 million in closing costs for a $250 million “non-recourse” loan from a private bank, backed by a Dubai prince, whose purpose was to seed the hemp economy in order to preserve the value of the dollar. Okay!

I signed the NDAs and received business plans that were jaw-dropping in terms of scope and scale. My reaction was skeptical optimism, but it all seemed to check out. They had everything lined up in terms of finance, management, markets, schedule and public relations. I was offered a paid role of some sort if I could only help them find that 1.2 million, which, get this, would be repaid to the investor within 7 days at a 100% ROI. Once the proceeds transferred to the BioSunn account, the investor would immediately receive a check of $2.4 million from those proceeds. Pressed on why this was such a generous offer, the CEO responded that it was simply his discretion and he wanted to be generous. Great!

We also learned that their team had other investors in the pipeline who were ready to provide the money, but were, for various reasons, not as desirable partners as professional hemp investors would be. Over time we also learned that, even though BioSunn had been in existence for many years in ND, it had no assets or income. Right!

I was engaged with a couple of different hemp investor networks who were willing to look it over, and their initial reaction matched mine: “Wow! Sounds too good to be

true. But what if...?”

Over the next few weeks we went through due diligence and pursued some rabbit holes, with a final deadline of February 28th. The BioSunn development team included responsible figures in North Dakota law and business, as well as some elderly partners who seemed, in somewhat cringey phone interviews, to be not quite up to the speed of a major enterprise of this type. The ND Attorney General’s office was aware of the project and the financial plan was produced by a mainstream ND accounting firm.

The Kendall, WI CBD facility project was fully engaged with the community, with letters of support from the likes of Organic Valley, and plans included housing for the elderly in Monroe County. If all had proceeded, that CBD plant would be half completed by now.

For two weeks we went through the process of sharing information with qualified investors in a tightly choreographed process requiring multiple NDAs and qualifying documents going back and forth. Specialized brokers who only dealt with international private banks, “way above retail,” were ready to share the final program details and a Wells Fargo private banker, who did exist, here in Atlanta, was part of the funds transfer process.

(Although she was not to be contacted.) The actual lending bank, US Capital Private Bank in Beverly Hills, from which we had an apparently real proof of funds in the amount of 500 million Euros, was privately owned by Joseph Jeremiah, a young Prince in the Royal House of David in Dubai and an Ambassador to the UN. Looking at his LinkedIn and Facebook page, things really started to get surreal. Investors don’t like surreal.

Long story short, the investors we worked with were too skittish to advance to the end. The more closely we examined the management team and the terms of a “loan” that did not need to be repaid, the fact that other “available” investors would not provide the $1.2 million closing costs, and earn 1.2 million in a week, the fact that management friends and family could not scrounge it together... these were too many red flags and both sets of investors bowed out.

Executive Summary January 2020 So, what did we learn? What if it was for real? No one has doubted the sincerity of the BioSunn team, but in the end, the scam potential of over a million dollars floating unsecured for a few days was too much. The potential loss of the money is compounded by an even greater loss of reputation, or worse, if it’s other people’s money.

The BioSunn plan showed the potential of a multi-faceted hemp industry. It also exposed the vulnerabilities of stakeholders in a new industry who lack personal assets but could otherwise be leaders. Ideally it should be the farmers and their kids who are financial stakeholders and reap the long term benefits.

That’s the kind of radical politics we could use about now.

CANNABINOIDS The effectiveness of cannabinoid compounds (CBD) for stress, anxiety and pain are not disputed. The industry is 2+ years out of the gate. Publicly traded brands are lobbying for the industry while local growers retailers and processors seek to build a stable market. Federal agencies are doing to help it and even attempting (DEA new IFR rules) to throw water on it even as we need it more than ever in a pandemic. Wisconsin has

a number of innovators seeking to establish brand and to build local and regional market. Medical marijuana is a separate category and is the law in a number of conservative states. Marijuana is seen as the big cash opportunity for states like PA currently seeking to dig out of COVID recession, as the crops is very lucrative.

Despite ongoing political battles with the DEA & FDA, the long term outlook is strong.

INDUSTRIAL FIBER CBD and marijuana excitement has overshadowed the fiber sector, which is the greatest opportunity in terms of practical applications. Fiber is the industry is based on historically because the qualities of hemp are unmatched by many synthetics, and even wood and masonry, for its renewable qualities and adaptability to replace plastics, fiberglass and some metals, pulp for paper and packaging. Hemp can’t compete with some plastics we’ve grown accustomed to, and paper pulp is almost free for manufacturers, but that does not mean that paper board opportunities aren’t real. Innovative manufacturers should be investing now to research product and create the market, which can be enticed with the patriotic value of supporting rural economies and reducing carbon

footprint. Literally tens of thousands of products can be produced with hemp fiber and numerous companies such as BMW are breaking the ice with door panels and brake pads. Hemp fiber won’t reap the cash that CBD will, but it’s easier to manage and can be a steady foundation as it was intended 100 years ago. Each sub-sector of fiber is its own expansive industry that can be developed as a regional specialty. For example textiles, where local designer clothing can be produced, seed-to-shirt with complete production. When it comes to building materials and housing, the US Hemp Building Association is setting standards for mainstream construction and certification.

HEMPSEED Also greatly overlooked is the nutritionally amazing seed of hemp, for human and animal consumption, each of which is ready for massive growth if we can ever get over the idea of “Yes, but it will get you stoned.” There is no THC in the seed, rather a unique full spectrum of protein and essential fatty acids, exceeding most, if not all, competitors such as olive, almond, flax, etc. If the goal is to improve rural economies, hemp seed as an animal feed staple could not be better positioned to provide a baseline, with animal feed to be locally

produced for consumption, lowering feed costs while developing product for commercial sale. Proving the model will not be difficult as all methods and equipment are proven and available. Manitoba Harvest is leading the hempseed for humans sector. The food and beverage opportunities are almost endless in terms of snack foods and ingredients, with hemp seed oils, hemp milk, shelled and unshelled seed, again, which can be marketed with a Wisconsin-made brand to indicate both quality and rural investment.

REMEDIATION Finally, in the ‘too-good-to-true-but-it-is’ category: Hemp can be used as a highly effective way to clean up heavy metals from brownfields and industrial sites, as well as to manage excess nutrients from farm runoff, while also producing a marketable fiber with little to no risk of contaminants, or which can be used for applications like hempcrete for housing where the toxins

will be sequestered in a wall. Property owners should already be doing this, it benefits everyone with no downside and the economics are immediate. The reason it’s not a thing is that, as a culture in 2020, we generally wait for permission from above to try new things. This is a long way from the frontier spirit of innovation upon which America was built. Change is not made by those who wait for permission.

T

he strange thing about the hemp industry is that it is not a patented new product for us to buy and adapt to, as we did with airplanes, automobiles computers and smart phones. No one owns it, otherwise we’d already have learned all about it from corporations willing to spend a hundred million on an ad campaign. That may come, or not, but knowledge is power and rural communities can use some of that, as soon as possible. The only hemp ad campaign we know is 80+ years of government campaigning against it. So it’s no wonder there is confusion.

Wisconsin has jump-started its hemp knowledge base in the past two years, like a Massey Ferguson tractor sitting in a barn since the Truman administration. Now that it’s up and running, more people to take it seriously.

Community education will lead to community ownership and prosperity. The professional messaging within the hemp industry can be translated for public consumption.

Corporate beverage companies are likely stockpiling large amounts of CBD biomass, waiting for FDA clarification. When this happens they are likely ready with a massive campaign to promote new product. It’s unknown how this will be promoted in terms of wellness and rural economic values.

The National Institute of Health currently has about $3 million invested in post-operative pain research with CBD. The FDA is slow walking its decision on designation as supplement that is Generally Recognized as Safe, which will eventually happen.

The DEA is threatening to undermine the whole industry. State and local law enforcement is not concerned with CBD except to differentiate from marijuana. Police officers are buying it for stress management. The USDA has no clear position.

The Future Of Hemp Building

W

hen was the last time you had an opportunity to create an industry from scratch? The USHBA was founded to help answer that question.

We were dealt three cards. The first was a new generation of young people with economic demands and needs. The second was the construction industry’s recognition of their responsibility to reduce their massive carbon footprint.

The third was the US legalization to grow hemp.

The combination of these three cards is creating a new genre within the construction industry of hemp based materials.

Starting with hempcrete, the USHBA is working diligently with ASTM with the goal of full certification which will allow architects, engineers, interior designers and contractors to build housing and specify “the product the green industry has been waiting for.”

One of the real opportunities of hemp constructed housing is community development. The design process includes the community, with a goal of economic empowerment. There has to be incentives in order to overcome barriers to entry, which can be difficult when building houses in a new way.

The good news is that hempcrete and other hemp based materials have been proven around the globe as low risk with high performance. It’s a good time for a pilot project to show what’s possible.

Working with Integral Design, the USHBA is available to work with Wisconsin stakeholders to develop a demonstration project that can be instantly scalable and show an exciting new prospect of local design/build and making use of of available materials which engages the young people in both urban and rural settings Barriers to Entry Lack of Education: Over the last few years the education process has successfully dispelled the myths that have burdened the hemp plant since it was outlawed in the 1930’s.

How To Resolve: Public education will benefit construction companies and communities.

Lack of US Certifications: Building with certified hemp based products has been going on across the globe for years. It won’t take long for the US to catch up.

How To Resolve: Public and industry pressure on planning agencies to validate hempcrete.

Lack of a processing infrastructure: Market demand will create the investment for the infrastructure needed to build multi-purpose processing facilities in order to provide industrial hemp farmers a guaranteed market for their harvest.

How To Resolve: Show scalable processing facility pilot project, working with construction and architecture partners.

A Revolution in Hemp Construction and Manufacturing

3D Printing 3D printing of houses, fixtures, furnishings and intricate or “impossible” objects using concrete is happening around the world. Adding hemp to the concrete creates new added value for its texture, strength and ability to sequester carbon. The machines are about the cost of a good pickup truck.

The Western Producer Excerpts:

Hemp Makes Concrete Stronger About six years ago, Pildysh, a concrete expert and registered engineer in Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta, set up a company in Calgary called Canadian Greenfield Technologies. The company had one major goal — develop reinforcement products that could mitigate concrete shrinkage cracking, according to a report that appeared this summer in constructconnect.com, a company that provides data to the construction industry.

After considering options, Pildysh and his team selected the fiber from industrial hemp plants.

“We tested a bunch … and the highest tensile strength was hemp,” said Stephen Christensen, vice-president and general manager for Canadian Greenfield Technologies.

Their research showed that hemp fibers reduced cracking and outperformed existing technologies. But there was one large problem: the hemp fiber on the market didn’t meet their needs.

Dazed and ... Constructed? How Hemp Could Alter Material Selections in Architecture Hempcrete, a lightweight, cementitious composite made with industrial hemp hurds (woody fibers from the plant core), lime, and water that can come in modular blocks similar to concrete masonry units. Hempcrete should not be mistaken for reinforced concrete, as the materials is not structural, nor can it be used in foundations since the natural fibers will degrade with prolonged exposure to moisture.

[T]he product is suitable for constructing monolithic, above-grade walls. According to Winston-Salem, N.C.– based distributor American Hemp, Hempcrete replaces the functionality of OSB, insulation, and drywall. No cavity is required although structural framing is necessary. Given its ideal application in low-rise construction and its stucco-esque appearance, Hempcrete is suitable for detached single-family residences.

These robotic printers need only 2 people to create a house, pretty much just standing around watching and pushing buttons. What does that mean for the future of lumber, saws, nailers and tape measures?

And the hand skills, and jobs, that go with them?

On the upside, when it comes to rebuilding after hurricanes and fires, is it worth it to wait a year for a wood house to be rebuilt, when it could burn or get blown away again? Concrete houses don’t burn and can be designed to withstand high winds. These printers could rebuild better, more efficient and ecofriendly houses in a fraction of the time and cost.

Yet woodworking is in our blood as are many other traditional hand skills that are declining: Sewing; Metal work; Masonry, etc. Can we have robots and more hand work also?

It’s not an either/or situation. HempWood is being used as a wood replacement that reduces the burden on forests. Hemp textiles can put new life into weaving and homemade fashion design. 3D printed concrete hemp houses will not replace conventional housing, but will only add to the mix of innovative options to innovate for the built environment and to attract a new generation of craftmakers.

JustBioFiber reports that its product sequesters 243 to 287 pounds of carbon dioxide per 1.3 cubic yards, based on the quantity of carbon-storing plant fiber used. Additionally, the blocks recarbonate an additional 141 pounds per 1.3 cubic yards during the curing process. Considering that the primary production of conventional concrete has a footprint of 456 to 689 pounds of carbon dioxide per 1.3 cubic yards, Super SSR Block has favorable environmental performance.

he HFC was begun in 2018 to continue the work of the Colorado Department of Agriculture hemp as animal feed stakeholder study. The goal of the coalition is to ensure that we bring all of the stakeholders to the table to guide the creation of the emerging hemp industry. To do this we have included: Hemp farmers, Hemp processors, veterinarians, feed manufacturers, animal feed formulators and nonprofit partners.

Our goal is to gain Federal approval for hemp as an animal feed ingredient for companion and production animals. There are two immediate benefits for using hemp as animal feed. The first is to create a market and value for what are currently by-products from processing.

This would commoditize cake and meal, hulls, and post extracted bio mass. Vertical integration on local farms would allow farmers to feed this material to their own animals and the mill or feedlot right down the road. For animal producers it would provide access to a high quality feed ingredient with beneficial protein and fat composition.

The US pet food market is projected to grow from $10.4 billion in 2018 to $13.3 billion in 2023. Internationally, North America is responsible for 31% of pet food production globally. Considering the market for farm animal feed the potential is much greater! In 2020 the farm animal feed market was 33.5 billion. To put this

Our main obstacle is political bias.

We are working to fill the gap of data on American grown and processed hemp. The general process of ingredient approval put forth by the FDA-CVM is expensive and time consuming. The average time for compilation of a submission is two years. Once it is submitted to the FDA the average length of time is another four years. With pressure on the agency to approve hemp as an ingredient we have been told that they will fast track hemp ingredient applications to 1824 months.

Kansas State University is working on the characterization of cannabinoids in feed. We coordinate with KSU to assist in data collection and in coordination with the efforts of the HFC to prove safety of hemp in meat, eggs and eventually milk.

isconsin’s food and beverage industry is well-positioned to adapt a new supply chain of hempseed for a global market.

Manitoba Harvest has mostly owned the category for some time because Canada has been clear and rational on the division between hemp and marijuana, while in the US the political baggage lingers even two years after the 2018 Farm Bill.

Manitoba Harvest dominates the people food category with raw product and snack foods.

US food companies are lagging.

So rather than playing catch-up, Wisconsin can develop a strategy that is complementary to, and separate from, the dairy industry, which will likely want to eliminate the word “milk” when it comes to hemp in liquid form.

Established industries are not welcoming of any innovation that might infringe on their market, as we have found in Georgia when discussing adding hemp textiles as a complement to cotton. The answer is basically “no”, even when the life of farmers and rural economies are at stake. Unfortunately, this drives politics and limits innovation, and is clearly not in the public interest and even gives foreign countries the edge. Cotton in Georgia, and milk in Wisconsin, are declining, and both have massive environmental impacts, compared to hemp.

This is why it’s important to change the conversation away from competition and toward survival, which is very patriotic in 2020.

Industrial hemp cultivars, Zolo-11, USO-31 and Zolo-15, were tested for their ability to accumulate U and Pb in the above-ground> biomass. Plants were grown in soils with an average content of U 336_1 mg/kg (OH), Pb 911_53 mg/kg (NJ), or Pb 571_86 mg/kg> (farm soil). Results demonstrated that hemp is potentially a good phytoremediation crop. This fast growing, high biomass crop grew normally in the Pb- or U-contaminated soil. Industrial hemp responded positively to Phytotech+s amendments and accumulated> up to 5,447 mg/kg Pb and up to 560 mg/kg U from the soils that contained just 571 mg/kg Pb and 336 mg/kg U respectively. Cultivars of industrial hemp significantly differ in the ability to accumulate Pb and U, hence extensive screening may produce cultivars with better phytoremediation capacity.

LAW ENFORCEMENT Cannabis Training and Technology

SAVANNAH, GA - Integral Design is training Chatham county agencies and prosecutors, via webinars, on the law, science and economics of the cannabis industry, sponsored by Lilu Enterprises, a local CBD processor who is donating a PurplPro testing device. The device and training program gives police a new edge at traffic stops in determining what is legal smokeable hemp and helps close the loopholes that narcotics traffickers are exploiting nationwide. It also helps protect lawful cannabis industry businesses.

PurplPro allows patrol officers to tell high vs low THC in a few seconds at a traffic stop. This issue is at the core of cumbersome new laws now in place across the country. The shifting laws and norms about cannabis require that police and prosecutors have all the tools and training they need to stay ahead of illegal trafficking, without penalizing those who play by the rules.

LECTra, or Law Enforcement Cannabis Training was developed in cooperation with local and national police agencies over the past year, and is state-certified in Georgia, Mississippi and Minnesota.

I’m a Wisconsin Hemp Farmer. I Vote.

Everyone was excited in 2018 when the Farm Bill passed. I jumped in and grew 700 acres that year, the most in Wisconsin. Our financial backer got us started in the spring, but by harvest time, he was not there for us and we ended up with tons of product in storage, unable to sell it because the ownership was not clear and the markets were still being developed. The same thing happened in 2019, with 500 acres. We all know that hemp is a breakthrough multibillion dollar industry. We did what we were supposed to do but the USDA and the state of Wisconsin were not there for us. They gave us the right to grow but followed that with an obstacle course of requirements to make sure we weren’t growing marijuana, and not a penny of financial support. When a local farmer lost his crop to a tornado, he should have been covered by the FSA but they turned him down because it was hemp, and not corn or soybeans. Something is wrong with this picture, and we’re ready to vote on it in November.

Hemp is not going away, and many of us Wisconsin farmers are still here, waiting for things to change, still making progress toward next year. Now that the 2020 election is here, officials and politicians need to do the right thing and support the cannabis industry, just as they do with corn, soybeans and dairy.

The 2018 Farm Bill could have included a billion or two to underwrite hemp farm loans to cover the transition. Instead they’re more concerned that we might be growing marijuana. Our local sheriff knows better. Wisconsin Economic Development Corp could have kicked in some incentives as they did for Foxconn with $2.85 million in income tax credits. Wisconsin’s farmers need to keep farming and our next generation does not want to work in an electronics factory.

Regardless of who we voted for in 2016, the 2020 election is upon us. Don’t take us for granted. Candidates need to take hemp into account for what it can mean for Wisconsin and every other state. The USDA needs to underwrite hemp cooperatives to get started with farming and processing infrastructure so that the corporate markets in CBD and fiber can count on a supply chain. The FDA could have fast-tracked the CBD regulatory process to benefit farming economies, as we had planned for in the beginning. They need to stop destroying our crops if it’s just a tiny fraction too ‘hot’ with THC. Government agencies and the business community need to understand that hemp represents multiple product manufacturing sectors and the state could be spending less for farmer therapy programs and more to bring the hemp industry back to the state.

he demand for information about CBD is rising rapidly, along with the major retailers selling it, yet most of whom know nothing about it. As a professional herbalist and retailer, I deal with the fallout from this wild-west scenario every day. It’s good for my business but the demand for information is bigger than I can handle.

CBD is not something illegal. People shouldn’t have to tiptoe around even talking about it. Now that major retailers are selling it, where’s the medical information? Go to the nearest Dollar General or CVS and ask about CBD research and how it’s used. How are doctors and pharmacists discussing it with patients?

The right quality CBD can be effectively used for infants on up. Parents buy CBD because they assume it helps their children. Or parents will discover their kids using suspect CBD items.

These products on the black market are very likely to have problems. What we have is a stew of misinformation, an unregulated market, consumers in need of effective remedies for stress, and no authoritative source of information.

We need to get over sneaking around, as this is all federally compliant. Decades of anti-marijuana marketing limits economic growth, right now in Wisconsin. There’s a reason why the good guys spend a lot of money on third-party validation and state and federal compliance. We are professionals.

Our Wisconsin infrastructure is just getting set up in the last few years and continues to grow. As it is right now this industry is completely a positive gain for the economy in all aspects.

Last year there was a reported 3,100,000 pounds of CBD flower accounted for. There’s also a huge bottleneck because at that time only 6% of it was sold. Everything from the large producer down to the small crafted formula takes a lot of science and operations to work out. The more career paths that are open here, is the more efficiency the industry will have, which will help to normalize costs from seed to the shelf. And it’s all possible within the state boundaries.

The first step is public education. The FDA could have done this two years ago. A standard of information would benefit all consumers, retailers, healthcare/wellness professionals and law enforcement. I already work with some of the states top specialists from orthopedic, to, oncologists and everything in between. Not educating the public benefits the black market and increases risks to families.

Public and private wellness programs would benefit by having an exciting new topic that will help people calm down and discover other herbs and therapies that don’t involve getting stoned or inebriated.

Pertaining to health insurance costs, the same way fitness memberships nutrition programs, acupuncture, massage therapy, chiropractic, and other modalities are encouraged because they reduce the cost of healthcare.In the same way CBD can be utilized and a true win-win. Better health for employees and patients, and lower healthcare claims, all based on education.

U.S. Consumers’ Search for CBD Runs From Gas Stations to Grocery Stores September 9, 2020

Here are a few of the stories or “anecdotes” that I see throughout my daily journey:

The person going through cancer treatments following every direction of medical advice are still benefiting from the properties of CBD.

The construction worker prescribed pain management who experiences risky situations with heavy equipment decides not to take the narcotics.

The men and women we see who have faced a lifetime of PTSD for various issues, CBD Balances psychological health and wellness, neurological system, long-term immunity and CBD changes their life.

My grandpa’s 20-year-old neuropathy that no medication has been able to really resolve.

They don’t really know much about it. They’re just told, “take this”, because “this will help with pain” or “this will help you sleep” or “this will make you less anxious.” That’s really the extent of it in terms of how it actually works and how to apply it and even how it’s processed or made as relatively unknown to the layperson. So I think that’s a that’s a pretty big barrier. And when you go to a store, you’re really relying on them, knowing these different processes and know how it works and know which products are going to work best for which ailment. And if they don’t know and they’re getting misinformation, I just don’t think you’re going to get the right experience. There’s been some studies out there on how consumers are first introduced to CBD. A majority of them are through friends and family. And so the level of education in about CBD right now in the industry is very much in this nascent stages.”

“The role of education is really critical. When I’ve talked to the manufacturers and processors, a lot of them did not want to take their product to market in a massive scale because they would lose the opportunity to educate the consumer. And they feel that education of the consumer is really critical right now so that they can control the messaging on the benefits of CBD. They’ve been resisting getting into Costco or getting into Wal-Mart because they want to make sure that they get the message out on the benefits.

“And then some of the other manufacturers that entered into the market, they did so through education. They didn’t necessarily see an opportunity and then go into it on a massive scale.

Although a lot of consumers understand what CBD is all about and have d it, there’s still an extraordinary number of consumers out there that don’t have any idea about it. And just assume it’s the same thing as marijuana.

The typical questions: Can CBD offer relief for their ailments? How safe is it for them.

What kind of dosing do they require for their concerns? When should they take it for best results? Where do the ingredients come from, is it legal, doe the seller know the grower?

There is a big gap of reliable public information so it’s up to herbal professionals to do it, but there are not enough of us who are trained and knowledgeable.

Currently in the private sector we can only reach so many people in a consumer-based model. Though we are educating as well again it’s limited to who we have attracted to the business.

The fact that we are willing to educate people with no strings attached, because we truly believe in what we’re doing, is a win-win. Educating through speaking is received much better because it’s sharing my experience and thorough understanding for the listener. People often choose to learn more, but most people don’t know much beyond the marketing hype. So any conversation from a reputable local grower and store owner goes a long way because now they suddenly can imagine from the seed to the shelf and that takes on a whole new excitement of its own. It’s a trust thing but that can be negative also, there are tons of “experts” out there who have no idea what they’re talking about. They have the advantage when there is no authoritative reference point.

You can’t know the chemistry and medical value without knowing the cannabinoid compounds, and the complex varieties of cannabis genetics. This is all uncharted territory, around the world, so as UW and other universities explore it, what a great opportunity for community and high school horticulture programs to include the science.

“That could be a goal for the coming year, to determine the level of interest among community and high school programs to study cannabis, I am sure there will be push back, because ‘marijuana’, but what better way to get teenager’s attention than to teach them the science of cannabinoids, and the whole historical legacy of cannabis in Wisconsin.

“We know the interest is there, I guess the key obstacle is to engage with school boards who find it too controversial and let them know about the law, the science and economics. UW could play a big role in that, since new science and industry usually comes through either a university, a government or a corporation. For hemp it’s literally grass roots, no pun intended, and while that is a challenge to school boards, it’s a great opportunity for kids to become industry leaders.”

he horticulture industry has not been quick to jump into the hemp industry, which is unfortunate, but understandable. Traditional garden centers cater to consumers and corporate clientele seeking ordinary flowers, shrubs, landscape plants and house plants, herbs and vegetables. There is also a strong hemp horticulture industry well-established out West, but the two sectors don’t mix, for cultural reasons, we can only guess, maybe something to do with 80 years of negative advertising by the government.

Perhaps the only horticulture industry exceptions is Fitchburg Farms, just south of Madison, where Mike Nauta and his son Tyler have found every reason to extend their large greenhouse/ field operation into hemp, with their sister company Growing Green Supply acting as a bridge between hemp and mainstream horticulture.

While thery are well-established in the southern Wisconsin community, the Nautas network across the entire US horticulture industry and look forward to supporting other garden centers seeking to enter the market. “It’s inevitable, the expansion of hemp horticulture, because growing from seed has so many risks, especially for small growers. When you buy a clone or seedling, you know exactly what you’re getting, you’re 100% on the genetics, and you gain several weeks on the grow season. So those three factors, time, genetic certainty and germination rate, are eliminated.”

How did they make the leap? “That’s a good question,” said Tyler. “It just seemed a perfect fit, with our commitment to sustainable agriculture and communities. We weren’t looking for it, more like ‘Of course’ and then in early 2019 things got rolling. A ground floor opportunity.”

Despite the down economy, business is good, with combined garden center and hemp up about 30%, he said.

As the industry expands into 2021, horticulture programs statewide will be very important to Wisconsin communities. “We would love to support UW Horticulture training programs to fit these needs. Local greenhouses across the state should be prepping now for Spring. By the end of November we have our action plan in place. And of course it’s not just the facilities but having a trained workforce is crucial, we can help put a plan together that puts Wisconsin ahead of every other state.”

This spring they are looking into growing for fiber, in the adjacent 36 acre field, as part of their sustainability initiative.

9 September 2020 Dear Bevan In early 2019 the UW College of Agricultural and Life Sciences in cooperation with UW Division of Extension established a special project to investigate and support a hemp industry here in Wisconsin and nationally. This work has been across all three of our mission areas; Teaching, Research and Extension/Outreach.

UW Madison Horticulture Facilities

Research: Several UW Madison faculty and extension personnel are leading work on various aspects of hemp. Departments like Agronomy, Horticulture, Soil Science, Entomology, and Plant Pathology are collaborating on how to grow and manage the crop: seeding rates, crop fertility, insect, weed and disease management and variety trials so data-based recommendations can be made to Wisconsin growers to answer questions when problems emerge for farmers. There are additional efforts in Agricultural Engineering on machinery and processing equipment needs and Agricultural Economics on marketing and profitability.

Extension & Outreach: UW Madison has hosted and participated in dozens of meetings, conferences, webinars and field days around the state and country on various hemp topics, with thousands of direct contacts. Extension and outreach activities extend to television, radio, and newspapers reaching even more people. The Wisconsin Agricultural Outlook Forum in January 2020 held an afternoon session focused on hemp with speakers from Kentucky, Colorado and Canada discussing the hemp industries in their regions and what Wisconsin could learn from their experiences. At the National Hemp Research and Extension Conference, Dr. Shelby Ellison, presented the results of a national survey of hemp growers and processers to identify important areas of research for hemp to prosper in this country.

ince the summer of 2019, Dr. Rodrigo Werle (Assistant Professor, Agronomy) and myself have led the hemp outreach and research program at UW-Madison CALS/Extension. We have already achieved national recognition for our work and have succeeded in raising extramural funds, presenting at national conferences, organizing Wisconsin-based field days and events, and serving as a clearinghouse of information on hemp for Wisconsin farmers and processors. We have helped put UW-Madison CALS/Extension on the map for hemp production in our state. In 2020 our team is replicating all experiments that were conducted in 2019 including CBD, fiber, and grain cultivar and nutrient input trials, organic and conventional weed management, and harvestability.

Teaching: Dr. Shelby Ellison developed and taught a new course “The Science of Hemp” in the Spring of 2020. In this course students learn the science of how the plant grows, the names and functions of the various plant parts, the male and female plants and how, why and when the plant makes the various parts (fiber, seed) and chemical compounds of interest to us. Experts in the field of industrial hemp give guest lectures and plants are brought into class for hands-on demonstrations of sex determination, clonal propagation, and cross pollination. She also taught a short course for the Midwest Organic and Sustainable Education Service (MOSES).

In addition to these activities specifically targeting hemp, we also are engaged in a variety of other teaching, research and outreach to promote agriculture, bio-processing and rural economic development in Wisconsin. We in CALS and Extension are committed to provide continued support for agriculture including opportunities to develop specialty crops such as hemp and the many ways that it can be used.

The Wisconsin Hemp Alliance is an association of hemp seed and clone suppliers, growers, processors, retailers, and consumers engaging in advocacy, education, and promotion of hemp and hemp products. The WHA is solely focused on nonpsychoactive industrial hemp products.

Our goals are to remove legal barriers at the state and federal levels to allow this industry to flourish and to create a platform for collaboration among participants in this industry. To accomplish this, we combine direct collaboration with decision makers, education of the public and industry participants, and a self-regulatory approach to raising the standard of best practices in our state to allow this industry to grow in a sustainable manner. We have worked closely with lawmakers, agency personnel, local officials, law enforcement, and other collaborative partners to help to generate the interest and preliminary success in this industry that we are seeing today.

To Whom It May Concern: I am writing to discuss the importance of the hemp industry to the US. My law firm represents businesses in the hemp industry. We represent businesses of all sizes and have clients in all aspects of the supply chain, from farmers to processors to brands.

Hemp is a significant economic driver. It is also a passion project for most of our clients. The hemp industry provides an outlet for people who want to engage in businesses that are both profitable and have a positive impact on the world. Between hemp’s ability to remediate the soil, its utility in a wide range of industrial applications, and its production of beneficial cannabinoids for health and wellness, hemp is creating a revolution in the US and the world. Demand for the products it produces is growing.

In addition to representing hemp businesses in the US, we also represent businesses in the cannabis industry throughout the world. During the past few years we have seen the international market for hemp and hemp products increase dramatically. This is exciting. It is also important for the US to support its nascent industry so that it is not left behind by rapidly expanding world market.

Hemp is vital to human and animal health. I am on the advisory board, and write a legal column for, the American Journal of Endocannabinoid Medicine (AJEM). It is the only printed, peer reviewed cannabis medical journal in North America. During my time with AJEM I have read numerous clinical studies and medical opinions about how phyto-cannabinoids, such as cannabidiol (CBD), that are produced by cannabis can promote healing for a wide range of health issues. Since marijuana is currently illegal at the federal level, the primary way for patients to have fully lawful access to natural cannabinoids is through hemp.
