1535 A mid-18th century oak longcase clock, 29.5cm arched brass dial inscribed on target in breakarch Thos. Higherns, Ladbrook, silvered chapter ring with Roman and Arabic chapters, Rococo dolphin, leafy scroll and flowering foliate spandrels, subsidiary silvered seconds dial, date aperture, twin winding holes, eight-day movement striking on a bell, arched hood with turned columns, arched rectangular door to waist, skirted base, bracket feet, 221cm high, c.1760
1533 A Gothic Revival oak longcase regulator, 28cm silvered register inscribed I Clerke, Royal Exchange, London, with Arabic minutes chapter and subsidiary seconds and hours dials, engraved with scrolling leaves, single winding hole, five pillar movement with deadbeat escapement, single weight, mercury compensated pendulum, the hood crested by a foliate boss flanked by pinnacles, carved with acanthus and blind tracery, pointed arched glazed door to waist flanked by cluster-column pilasters, further blind tracery to base, carved bun feet, 235cm high
Thomas Higherns (otherwise Iorns or Irons) was a clockmaker, silversmith & gunsmith based at High Street, Alcester, Warwickshire from at least 1759 until his death in 1808. He also signed clocks (as here) from Ladbroke (sic) and Southam. His widow Sarah took over the business in 1808 and in 1819 was succeeded by their sons Thomas and William, the firm continuing until 1872. A very similar clock is illustrated in McKennam, J., Clockmakers & Watchmakers of Central England (Mayfield 2002) 221-222m, Figs. 8.79 & 8.80. £300 - £500
John Clerke, working 1863-1881 was a notable maker, but many of whose clocks have movements signed by John Morrison. £2000 - £3000
