ARMCHAIR ART FAIR THE
AUTUMN 2023
Welcome to the 5th Armchair Art Fair!
Once again, here is another incredible array of artworks on sale from dealers with years of expertise and knowledge of their chosen genres. The extraordinary diversity of art on offer spans such styles, periods and specialist subjects as French Naif paintings, 18th/19th Century watercolours, Art Deco, Modern British, Oxford & Cambridge, Sporting, Maritime & Wildlife … the list goes on!
Why, you may ask, is it such a good idea to purchase art from such a dealer?
Our participants have many years of experience and have built up a profound knowledge of their particular areas of specialisation, their works of art and artists. As Derek Newman has commented, “Those of us exhibiting our stock here have cultivated relationships over time across the art world, our customers, collectors and other dealers providing access to all sorts of private sources of artworks, many of which haven’t been on the open market before.” Also important, where applicable, are professional relationships with major artists – as an example, for many years, John Iddon was great friends with Mary Fedden, and has a vast amount of knowledge about her and her work and the inspiration behind them.
Luckily for us, as well as their expertise, most dealers have the instincts of a keen collector, and get a huge amount of pleasure from the act of buying and selling. As Julian Hartnoll says, “Once bought, it is ‘my’ picture and always will be even if it is now hanging in The Tate (five at the last count).” Of course they have to resist temptation to purchase pictures or works of art for themselves, sometimes frustratingly. Julian added: “If I had kept one great picture – Lempicka’s Auto Portrait or indeed any of the great Burne Jones’s that I have owned, I would be a rich man now. I would be enjoying The Armchair Art Fair as a reader not a dealer!” C’est la vie!
As per the previous catalogues, we do hope you’re tempted by all the fine treasures in this year’s Armchair Art Fair.

Mary Fedden was keen on the Newlyn School of painters, especially those that featured women whose men had been lost at sea (as in Walter Bramley’s ‘A Hopeless Dawn’). After her husband Julian Trevelyan died the Newlyn influence perhaps reflects her sadness here: in the mirror you can see a tear in her eye, and through the window, the sea.

1. FRENCH NAÏF PICTURES
In the spring of 2022 we published Unjustly Forgotten French Naïf Paintings of the 20th century to coincide with our exhibition at the Maas Gallery in Duke Street St James’s. This was an introduction to those painters termed Naïf who followed Douanier Rousseau and who became immensely popular in France and the USA between the wars. Rousseau had been promoted by Wilhelm Uhde (1874-1947) before the first war; Uhde left France for Germany during that war and when he returned Rousseau was no longer affordable, his prices higher than those of Cezanne. Uhde’s collection had been confiscated and sold off before his return to Paris. Uhde, therefore, looked for successors to Rousseau. At the top of the list of these painters was Bauchant (see opposite)
Anatole Jakovsky (1907-1988) took over the leading role of protagonist for the second generation of Naïf painters and those I now exhibit Desnos, Crociani, Lagru, Fous, Eve and Dechelette (pages 84-85) were enthusiastically promoted by Jakovsky. I have written extensively on the artists, critics and dealers who were the main figures in the movement in my catalogue of the 2022 exhibition at Maas Gallery. This is available from www.hartnollanddaughters.com.
2. FOUSSA ITAYA
This year we held another exhibition at the Maas Gallery showing a further selection of French Naïf paintings but also introducing the Japanese artist Foussa Itaya. (1919-1972) Brief details of his life appear in this catalogue on page 86. We published a Foussa Itaya catalogue for the 2023 exhibtion at the Maas Gallery which is available at www.hartnollanddaughters.com.
3. THE KITCHEN SINK
We have concentrated on Kitchen Sink painting since our inaugural show The Kitchen Sink Painters at the Mayor Gallery in 1991. In this Art Fair we are showing the seminal painting Kitchen Sink With Tap by Jack Smith (1928-2011) (page 87). We are the pre-eminent dealers in the work of John Bratby (1926-1992), as well as being owners of his archive and the copyright in his paintings. Foussa Itaya
Andre Bauchant fulfils the necessary qualifications for a Naïf painter. He had had an earlier career as a gardener, just as Rousseau had been a douanier; he had no formal artistic education; his talent was natural. His initial exhibit at the Salon d’Automne was in 1921 where his work caught the eye of CharlesEdouard Jeannert. (aka Le Courbusier) who had heard the comment of another visitor “it looks like a Douanier Rousseau touched up by Marie Laurencin”. Le Courbusier became Bauchant’s first champion and collector.
Vase of Roses on a Wall is an early example of a subject which became a favourite of the Naïf painters. Rousseau had often painted vases set centrally within the canvas but always against curtains or wallpaper - Bauchant developed this by setting his vases against a landscape. It is a quintessential and simple statement - to compare in size and scale the vase of flowers and the trees which frame our view of the landscape. The current example is dated 1926, a prime period.
Three Birds - a pied wagtail, a grey wagtail and a robin although painted 26 years later than Vase of Roses on a Wall continues the juxtaposition of scale - the birds too large for the flowers, the trees too small. It is a typical work by the artist - a painting where nothing follows the rules, yet nothing disturbs. Bauchant had no rules to follow and thus no rules to break.

LA VIELLE BERGERE AUX CHEVRES Oil on board.

£5,200
Collection: Musee du Petit Palais, Geneve.
Exhibited: Ferdinand Desnos, Musée Jakovski, Nice 1980.
Bibliography; 629 Ouevres de Renoir a Picasso, Musée du Petit Palais, Geneve.
Verso: landscape by another hand (?) signed Francis Desnos 1937.
Of the 9 artists included in the superb exhibition at the Musée Maillol du Douanier Rousseau a Seraphine, 2019, Desnos is perhaps the strangest (the others were Bauchant, Bombois, Eve, Seraphine, Peyronnet, Rimbert, Rousseau & Vivin). Desnos had a difficult life constantly plagued by ill health and never settling either in Paris or in his home town of PontLeroy, Loire; he worked as an odd-job man, an electrician and other metiers. His family were boulangerie owners (his cousin the surrealist poet Robert Desnos’s father was a butcher). He painted from 1931 but did not exhibit until 1943 - which he later viewed as a mistake as he was criticised for trading during the occupation. Pessimism set in, enhanced by the death in Auschwitz of his cousin Robert. By 1948 he had achieved a few admirers including Andre Breton, of whom he made a portrait. He is strange in the range of his subject matter - from fighting animals, cats accompanying portraits, still lives, religious subjects, nudes and landscapes - these latter described by the distinguished critic Bernard Dorival (1914-2003) - the hillsides and rivers, the meadows and the woods, the old medieval villages and the light blue skies of his native Touraine, all the more dear to his heart as exiled in Paris he understood the silence of the fields, the calms of the early hours, the solitary dialogue with reality, the framework of his childish existence nuanced with nostalgic memory (Ferdinand Desnos Musée Beaux Arts de Tours 1963).

Oil on canvas.
18” x 23”.
Signed lower right and inscribed lower left Touraine Chateau de Chaumont le matin.
£6,800
It has not been possible to locate Le Pont (opposite); clearly it is one of the many bridges which criss-cross the Loire. It dates from after 1936 when Desnos had returned home after his first spell in Paris had been cut short by tuberculosis.
When Desnos includes animals in his pictures they are exaggerated in scale; in La Vielle Bergere aux Chevres the cat and two goats, are large in comparison with the pollarded trees and the old bergere. Here in Chateau Chaumont-sur-Loire the two rabbits and the bird are disproportionally large. Desnos does not do this in a schematic sense as Bauchant does; his animals pop up wherever he chooses. They appear as spectators to the scene he is painting.
The Chateau of Chaumont-sur-Loire as it is today situated 11 kilometres north of PontLeroy where Desnos lived; his family were boulangerie owners, and he would often return to his beloved Touraine. The magnificent castles of the Loire enchanted Desnos who painted them accurately and lovingly.

COMBAT NAVAL A VILLEFRANCHE
Oil on canvas.

Emile Crociani fills all the qualifications necessary to be called a naïf artist. His entire career, after a brief spell as a miner, was as a lorry driver for a gas plant in Nice where he lived with his wife who worked at Galerie Lafayette. He left his job in 1953 and retired to Vallauris above Nice. There he started painting. He was not prolific - his subjects being either flowers, imaginary scenes of the harbour at Nice and in Venice and some landscapes of the hill towns around where he lived. The first of his pictures which we are exhibiting is entitled Combat Naval a Villefranche; although the title suggests a battle there are no specific historical events which Crociani may be depicting. While we have described Desnos’s work as strange, Crociani’s is always happy. We are supposed to be witnessing a battle but here it is fought out by flag waving children in decorated boats, their only weapons are flowers; one boat is unmanned. It is reminiscent of a Venetian carnival, another favourite subject in Crociani’s work.
The second painting inscribed Conte is a view of the hilltop hamlet of Contes. It is a joyful picture ; in the foreground a girl feeds her ducks and chickens, a boy tends to his pigs, the ascending path is festooned with flowers - it must be a festival day as the church of Sainte MarieMadeleine is festooned with flags.

EMILE CROCIANI (1902-1978)
FISHING BOATS IN THE BAY OF NICE Oil on panel. 15” x 23¾“. Signed and dated 1961.

Crociani had to use his imagination to recreate a scene showing the old pier La Jetee-Promenade at Nice as by the time this picture was painted in 1961 the pier no longer existed. The Jetee was built in 1883 and was burnt down three days after its opening; it survived American occupation in the first World War but in the second was stripped by the Germans of all copper, bronze, statues, electrical wiring and other metals. At the end of the war the government ordered its destruction, everything was demolished and the remains left to rot in their watery grave. Hence Crociani is giving us a picture of happier times. While we know Crociani had no formal training in art practice he surely must have seen this lithograph by Henri Riviere made in 1902. Dufy also made many images of the Jetee in its heyday.
EMILE CROCIANI (1902-1978)

The Fleurs dans un Vase was actually included in the last Armchair Art Fair but we are showing it again as it is better understood in the company of other works by Crociani. Francis, the artist’s son, became a potter establishing a business in Vallauris - this vase is most likely one of Francis’s creations. His son Gerard now continues this distinguished artisan potier at Vallauris. Crociani was the subject of an exhibition Emile Crociani at the Musee International d’Art Naïf Anatlole Jakovsky, Nice 1986.The Museum holds a significant collection.

DOMINIQUE LAGRU (1873-1960)
LE FENAISON
Oil on canvas.
9½” x 13“.
Signed and dated 1953.
£3,200
This is an unusually calm painting by Lagruwho, born the son of a butcher, did not touch a paint brush until 1943 at which date he was 70. Thereafter he produced a large body of work mainly expressing his political and historical views; he was a radical tradeunionist, extremely well-read, yet his life was described as one of misery, illness and sorrow. This painting can be read in terms of his political views, the noble workers or simply as an observationit has something of Van Gogh in it.
JEAN FOUS (1901-1971)
EVE GIVING THE APPLE TO ADAM Oil on canvas.
18” x 22“.
Signed. c 1948.
£4,200
In contrast to Lagru Jean Fous, by all accounts, was a happy and jovial man. He had been “discovered” by the critic Anatole Jakovsky working in the Clignacourt
flea market; initially he painted very tight views of the various Parisian flea markets but these became increasingly loose and less powerful. There is no record in his biography of the few arcadian subjects that we have seen but they have all the elements of his market scenes : ordinary figures, wandering animals and of course no cars, aeroplanes or telegraph poles! Whether the Garden of Eden had so many wonderful animals is debatable.
JEAN EVE (1900-1968)
PAYSAGE DU PRINTEMPS-SUR BRIONNE PRES DU LUCARNO Oil on canvas.
16” x 13“.
Signed and dated 1949 and inscribed with title verso.
£2,800
Although Jean Eve featured prominently in the Musee Maillol exhibition du Douanier Rousseau a Seraphine, 2019 he himself might reject the title Naïf Painter. He was academically unschooled but he knew and had taken advice from Kisling, Utrillo and Vlaminck. Hence in this charming little painting we see only traces of naivetythe buidings aren’t quite solid, the trees are obsessively detailed but are not arranged as integral to the landscape.

The buildings in Trois Époques all refer to sites of Paris International Exhibitions. But, as usual with Dechelette, there is a something cryptic about the title. The building on the left is the now demolished Palais de Trocadero, built in 1878 but shown by Dechelette with a variant tower, the Eiffel Tower 1889 in the middle and the Palais de Chaillot, 1937 on the right. Either Dechelette has mistakenly dated The Trocadero or this is a cryptic reference to the Commune of 1870.

Emile Blondel
Blondel retired aged 57 from his sole careerthat of a Parisian bus-driver. Thereafter he devoted himself to painting - especially Parisian views which he knew so well. Sacre Coeur with its rising steps seemed to have suited the naïf artists. Blondel was continuing a tradition started by Bombois, Vivin and Eve of painting the Basilica; they had found a ready market for their pictures in the Foires aux croutes of Montmartre. Uhde had called the very first exhibition of Naïf painters Peintres se Coeur Sacre in 1928. But none could quite grasp the perspective and the steps ; Blondel’s attempt is a worthy successor to Vivin, Eve and Bombois.

French Naïf Artist : Foussa Itaya
FOUSSA ITAYA (1919-1972) NAIL PLAYER OR SMALL SPLENDOUR Oil on canvas. 28½” x 23½“. Signed Itaya and dated 1964 £4,500
Foussa Itaya
We have been collecting the work of Foussa Itaya since 2008 and we put on a small exhibition and similarly small catalogue in May (catalogue available from hartnollanddaughters.com.] The facts of his life are sparse. He arrived in Paris aged 33 and lived there until his untimely death twenty years later. He was represented by Gallery Drouant-David (Buffet ’s dealer) and they record sales of 800 pictures - so in a short working span he was immensely prolific. He fits no “ism” - his Japanese roots show, he is hyper realist, he has anthroplogical stories to tell, his Paris views are empty of life. He remains enigmatic.
This is a version of the painting which won Itaya the gold prize at the Salon des Artistes Francais in 1964. It differs in that our version has only one cat to the left and one bird to the right. The two titles are alternative translations from the Japanese

STILL LIFE WITH TAP Oil on board.
36” x 48”. Signed and dated 1953. Titled verso.

Exhibited: Sunderland Arts Centre Jack Smith
Paintings & Drawings
1949-1976, January and February 1977, illustrated page 62.
John Berger reviewing the Jack Smith show at the Beaux Arts Gallery in 1954 wrote “At the Beaux Arts Jack Smith is showing some twentyfive paintings. This is his second exhibition and I now think it is possible that Smith is a genius. I do not admire his work as much as I do simply because it is grim, monochromatic and utterly uncompromising … ; nor because it turns its back on everything that is chic; nor because its subject matter of grubby babies and the household objects of working-class kitchens is an indirect comment on poverty… The faith I have in Jack Smith’s work is due to its certainty… His style is something as unconsidered as the sound of one’s voice. How he paints is entirely as a result of what he has seen and felt …. In each picture he achieves a unity - the unity, say, of a room that is lived in. Is it too much for the museums, including The Tate, to think for themselves about this exhibition? There are canvases here which would credit any contemporary gallery anywhere, and which, if unsold will disgrace us all.
The Tate did as Berger suggested and bought Mother Bathing Child in 1955 Their catalogue entry states that this was one of a series of the same subject that Smith made in 1953 and that he destroyed the rest. Smith did not like his early figurative work or the pigeon hole of Kitchen Sink into which he had been put by Berger, Sylvester and the critics. He said Like many artists before me I turned to my own environment for subject matter… I wanted to make the ordinary miraculous. This had nothing to do with social comment. If I had lived in a palace I would have painted chandeliers
In reply to our enquiry as to whether he had any paintings from the fifties he replied that he had none and would we please study his recent paintings. He had moved on and rejected his early work. We own a large panel which he had used as a backboard to a drawing - it is one of his Venice Biennale pictures; it is still covered in the impenetrable black household paint he had used to obscure it; and he refused to allow the reproduction of his 50s pictures in Martin Harrison’s exhibition Transition (Barbican 2002).
Of the four painters Beaux Arts Quartet it fell to Jack Smith to provide the eponymous Kitchen Sink (Martin Harrison Transition, Barbican 2002). Bratby painted a bathroom basin and two toilets. Our painting Still Life with Tap has survived. The Kitchen Sink movement may have been brief but it was very important not only in artistic terms, but also in literature and the theatre. This is an opportunity for any museum to acquire a rare and quintessential example of the movement. As Berger had suggested fifty years ago. Or disgrace us all !
We hope you have enjoyed perusing these images in your armchair.

The John Davies Gallery was established in Stow-on-the-Wold in 1977. I had started dealing in fine art to subsidise my own painting activities as early as 1971, having first purchased some 19th Century watercolours in 1968. I first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1976 but ceased painting on opening the gallery. After thirty years at Stow, I moved the business to a purpose-built exhibition space at Moreton-in-Marsh where we continue to stage Contemporary Exhibitions and show a changing stock of 19th Century paintings and early and mid-20th Century Exhibits. Since lock-down I have returned to my own painting (see last page of our ten) and the Gallery at Moreton-in-Marsh is open Wednesday to Saturday.

JOHN DAVIES
I started painting seriously in the 1970’s driven by a love for the English countryside as well as being inspired by a good number of British artists, including the Pre-Raphaelites I regularly viewed at Birmingham City Art Gallery while studying technical illustration at Birmingham Art School. I grew up with several David Cox watercolours at home and loved viewing those in Birmingham too; other artists that came to my attention early included figures as diverse as Rowland Hilder, S.R Badmin, Alfred Sisley, Gilbert Spencer and James Bateman to name a few.
My own technique is intensely time consuming, and while I showed successfully at the RBSA, the NEAC and the Royal Academy, because of the time it takes to complete examples I reluctantly abandoned my own painting in favour of dealing full time from 1977. Since the beginning of lock-down I have reverted to my own painting and am presently accumulating work for a (first) exhibition. Many observers of my compositions cite pointillism – one colleague likening it to ‘Seurat on Speed’. Technically it is not pointillism in the classic sense, in which dots of the component colours are placed close together, although I have experimented with this practice and may do so again. The term I use for my own work is High Naturalism.

Michael John Hunt’s painting presents a vibrant view of Waals Eiland Gracht, with the historic Montelbaan Tower proudly piercing a clear blue sky. The scene is alive with detailed barges on the canal, flanked by traditional Amsterdam houses with their unique gabled rooftops. Bicycles lean casually against the bridge and freshly budding trees softly frame the cityscape, hinting at the early spring season. Through meticulous attention to light, colour and detail, Michael John Hunt masterfully encapsulates the charm of Amsterdam in this splendid artwork.

Michael John Hunt's painting "The Cat and the Quill" transports viewers to a historic room, suffused with the warmth of sunlight. The scene unfolds with a sense of tranquillity as the door stands open, revealing a path that leads to a yew hedge, surrounded by trees and fragrant lavender. Lying lazily across the threshold, a black cat commands attention, observing the world beyond with a calm demeanour.
