TCERG, short for Tissue Culture Engineering Research Group, was established in 2000 in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). Led by Associate Professor Dr. Fadzilah Adibah Abdul Majid, an expert in mammalian cell culture technology, the group comprises 18 active associates and 20 allied members. Situated at Level 2, Block N19 of UTM, the Tissue Culture Engineering Laboratory conducts a wide variety of studies involving cell and tissue culture.

research areas

TCERG partners

• Bioassays for efficacy, toxicity and structure-function studies of herbs for medicinal and cosmeceutical applications. • Development of specific hybridoma cultures for bio-diagnostic/biotherapeutic applications. • Stem cells for Wound Therapy. • In vitro biocompatibility studies for biomedical implants. • ‘In vivo’ preclinical bioassays using zebrafish and micemodels.

TCERG is in close collaboration with a number of other research groups both local and abroad. These groups include Institute of Bioproduct Development (IBD) and Meditec research group in UTM, School of Pharmacy in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Kuliyyah Pharmacy in Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia, Institute of Marine Biotechnology in Universiti Malaysia Terengganu and Salahaddin University in Kurdistan region of Iraq.

Chemical Reaction Engineering Group (CREG) is formed to conduct research and development (R & D) in applying the theories and principles of chemical reaction engineering to industrial processes. Our concerns are in the areas of applied catalysis, reaction and reactor engineering, modelling of chemical reaction systems, and biorefinery.

About 1

About creg

Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Nor Aishah Saidina Amin (Prof NASA), CREG has established itself as one of the best groups in the faculty and also the university. CREG, under the umbrella of Energy Research Alliance (ERA) has published numerous technical papers in journals and conferences, won a number of awards in related competition and holds some patents. CREG presently holds several research grants and continuously seek for more to progressively run and sustain its research.

About

1 About biomip

This group will mainly work on bioconversion of carbohydrate-based materials such as starches. The enzyme will be the main source of biocatalyst. Screening of raw enzymes/microbes from nature and design of super or robust enzymes will be carried out through protein engineering technique. Finally these enzymes/microbes will be used in the biotransformation of carbohydrates or other bio or synthetic compounds into valuable fine chemicals or other metabolites/molecules.

About • Production of High flux and high rejection membranes

• Synthesis of reactive membranes based on magnetic nanoparticles and bacteria for biologic depollution

1 About ABS

• Production and testing of ultrafiltration membranes The group research centers on the membrane technology: making of reverse osmosis membranes and ultrafiltration membranes/nanofiltration membranes/ thin composite membranes. Downstream separation process using membranes for desalination purposes, treatment of waste water, and also biological process streams. However over the last 5 years the group research area has broadened and moved towards biotechnology and bioprocessing. Besides membranes the group is also well versed with the fermentation processes using both free and immobilized cells and also nanoparticles and is always looking for new and challenging research areas of interest.

IHE developed Fuel Cell Powered Wheelchair With a small funding from the research university grant scheme, Dr Saharudin and his team managed to develop a fuel cell powered wheelchair. In addition to the practicality of such an invention, the project also proposed innovative control strategy for maneuvering functions. The product will be further developed with a local company for European market.

activ First Hydrogen-Powered Motorcycle launched UTM once again made history in the exploration of science and technology after successfully developed a first ever hydrogen-powered motorcycle, known as H2 Motive. This state of the art motorcycle is first of its kind in the world and is environmentally friendly as it does not emit any smoke or sound. This project is an invention by a group of researchers led by Prof. Dr. HamdaniSaidi from the Business Advanced Technology Centre (BATC) UTM.

ities With an overall width of 760 millimeters, overall height of 1155 millimeters, overall length of 2010 millimeters and weighing 130 kilogram, the motorcycle can go up to 110 KM/H and as far as 500 kilometers with every gallon of hydrogen combustible source. This project was funded by IRPA with an allocation of RM1 million and it took 3 years to be developed. It was launched by the Prime Minister, Datukseri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi at the Perdana Putra Building in Putrajaya after chairing his cabinet meeting today. Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellor, Tan Sri Prof. Dr. MohdZulkifli Tan Sri MohdGhazali in his statement said if H2 Motive is commercialized, he is confident it will catch the eye of the public as it has many special traits.

High Temperature Processing Research Group (HiTemp) under Department of Chemical Engineering, UTM has been conducting research and development (R&D) on both microwave application and combustion technology for the last 10 years. R&D on industrial microwave application was initiated since year 2000. Currently, there are two microwave heating prototypes developed by HiTemp:

About

1About HiTemp

• •

10 kW continuous microwave system; and 12 kW vacuum microwave system.

The microwave prototypes are used for various applications, such as drying of local agricultural produces (i.e. jackfruit, roselle, guava), drying of sludge and sterilization of oil palm and mushroom growing media. HiTemp also involves in the development of various dimensions of fluidised bed systems utilizing biomass waste (e.g. rice husk, palm shell) and municipal solid waste as fuel. The usage of such waste materials as fuel offers a more realistic approach in dealing with the tremendous increase in solid waste.

The Advanced Materials and Process Engineering (AMPEN) research group was established to undertake research and development (R&D) in the areas of separation technology (SET Program), waste treatment, utilization and recycling (WTUR Program), and enzymes and microbial technology (EMT Program) related to the needs of the local industry to face the changing demands over next decade or so especially in the areas of environment and energy. In SET program the researches are currently focused on developing adsorbents for removal of mercury, BTEX and dispersed oil from fluid streams which are commonly encountered in oil and gas exploration and production activities.

About

[ Logo NIl ]

1About AMPEN

The utilization of the wastes from agriculture activities such as oil palm biomass (OPB), rice residues and coconut waste residues, and industrial wastes from wastewater treatment plants for adsorbents, corrosion inhibitors and flocculants synthesis has been the thrusts of our WTUR research program over past years. The researches in EMT program have been in the areas of enzymes and cells immobilization in silica materials for degradation of emerging organic pollutants such as pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPPCs) and pesticides that reportedly present in the surface water, ground water and sewage treatment influents. Most research projects are supported by research grants from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovations (MOSTI), Malaysia and the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA), Malaysia (eScience Research Fund), the ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), Malaysia (ERGS and FRGS) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (GUP). Other fundings include the ExxonMobil research grant and the Hitachi Foundation. The research projects are carried out mostly by undergraduate and postgraduate students in collaboration with related industry such Petronas, Syarikat Air Johor (SAJ) and Indah Water Konsortium (IWK). The scholarships are available from MOHE and UTM for well-qualified graduate students.
