Mr. Banfield's Notes the story of design

For many years, this magazine that you hold in your hands was just a thought in my head, an idea that first sparked when we was creating my first design blog, “Everything-in-Design.” This blog was a thought eight years ago to explore what makes for true design and what it all means to me. Now I get to take that discovery into print with this first issue of Design by Jamie Banfield.

This print and digital digest is a personal journal from the whole JBD team, showcasing our interior design projects, client's stories, the JBD team members, and inspiring local creatives and showcasing industry hacks!

We came to the realization that we were missing the opportunity to share so many amazing stories that should be told.

We were jokingly chatting about how we could fill a whole magazine with those stories, and months later, here we are. On this Thursday evening standing over 40 gorgeous pages spread out on our office floor putting the last few details on the first edition of the digest. It’s so humbling to see our accomplishments laid out in front of us, from design projects we are trusted to bring to life, the strong client relationships, to the inspiring people with stories to tell.

A common question I am always asked is “what’s your story and how did you get to this point in your career?”. Passion and always asking “the WHY” to the norm has placed me here and I wouldn’t change a thing. With the support of our clients, peers, and partners we are able to do what we do. My parents have always told me that I can accomplish anything I put my mind to, and the JBD team have made this vision come to life. We are super excited for this to hit coffee tables across North America this spring and dedicate this issue to mum and dad.

W H AT WA S T H E D E S I G N PR O C E SS L I K E FOR YOU?

It was great to work with a team with experience and vision. We thought we knew exactly what we wanted going into the process, and the design team brought it to life by challenging our perceptions on a couple fronts – the countertop being a prime example. We thought we wanted something very plain, and Jamie gently introduced us to a different option, which we ended up going with. It was the right choice that we would not have made on our own, and we couldn’t be happier with it.

Having someone guide us through the process with thoughts, experience, and an overall vision was well worth it. It was very helpful to have a final design and plan on paper before we started the demolition so we knew where we were going.

WHERE DID YOU SPLURGE?

We splurged on the floor tile but it was worth it. We love that the width mimics the original hardwood floor through the rest of the house, and the modern yet classic herringbone layout. Our other major splurge was the appliances which was completely worth it as we cook every day. The quality is exceptional.

Biggest High? The last few weeks where everything started to come together. Biggest low - a month into the reno and feeling like there wouldn't be an end, during the dark days of winter!

W H AT ' S YO U R FAVO U R I T E T H I N G A B O U T THE KITCHEN?

We love that the kitchen is a nod to the 1970's architecture of the house. Our home has character, which was completely lacking in the mid-1990s kitchen. The design of our new space seamlessly fits into the flow and feel of the house. There are too many favourite things to mention, but I do love sitting in the chair by the windows with my coffee in the morning.

H O W D I D YO U G E T H E R E ?

I’ve always had a passion for design and after finishing my interior design studies, I was employed by a millwork company where I learned all the tricks of the trade of custom millwork and customer service. This definitely shaped the course of my career and helped develop my eye for detail. From there I put my head down and crafted the vision for Jamie Banfield Design Inc. I remember being asked “what is your style” and at the time I had no idea, I knew what I liked but did not understand what a set style was. Reflecting on our past portfolio we totally have a style which is West Coast inspired and can see details of myself in all of our past projects.

People identify with the JBD team and our voice for being approachable. We’ve worked hard to develop our core values, and look at them each and every day. This helps guide us on easy and hard decisions each and every day. Developing

a team has had its challenges; these key values have helped shape what type of team member we welcome into the JBD family. We are a young, talented and innovative team that is passionate about "why". We're focused on why we do what we do and not the “what” in what we are doing.

W H E N D I D YO U K N O W YO U W E R E D O I N G W H AT YO U W E R E S U P P O S E D T O? My mother would tell you I was to be either a banker or an architect. My brother would tell you I would be a sales person with a Crayola colouring box in hand. From a very young age I have always been sketching, creating towns and skyscrapers with lego, building all kinds of furniture with my dad and assisting (not that well) with home renovations. It is such an honour to see our clients fully trust me and the team with one of their biggest investments and most personal space, their home. Welcoming us to be a part of creating something they will wake up to every morning.

D O YO U H AV E A M E N T O R? I do not have a mentor as in one person I lean on for advise, I have an amazing network of family, friends, and peers. When I first started in the interior design industry, it was intimidating to see successful designers and brands making waves. I have always look up to amazing local talent such as Robert Bailey, Kelly Deck and Dwaina Sprague and to think today I am a peer of these talented creators. I'm focused on surrounding myself with the best and have been so lucky to have a group of amazing supportive people around me. I look at those trusted members around me as my board of directors, assisting where they can and being a wealth of knowledge and sometimes not grasping the fact that they are shaping parts of myself and Jamie Banfield Design.

THE MOD

The MOD is a simple vanity for the minimalist. These can be configured in different ways to build your perfect vanity.

Culture is something that is very important to me, I never really thought of it until we had a team at JBD. I believe in open communication and a collaborative effort, I think these key beliefs have helps in creating the culture JBD is proud of. I have found that some of the best solutions have been formulated from a Junior Designer on our team. I always get my team to ask "why" to the conventional "it's done this way”. We ask why to our clients, build partners, team members and overall industry. At times asking why results in an answer that assist tailoring the path of design, the true reason for a project or an application of a product no one has thought of or accomplished yet.

THE MID

Stylish and sophisticated. A modern take on a mid-century modern design. The MID will make a stunning design statement in any bathroom.

W H AT I S YO U R FAV O U R I T E S PA C E T O D E S I G N ?

Kitchen and bathrooms are by far my favourite spaces to work on, I really enjoy digging in to flow and function of a space. Every kitchen might have similar needs for the space, once you get fully emerged in the project and start getting to know the clients you can see exactly what their habits are. Space planning brings me back to my Lego days (well they still exist, my parents still purchase lego for my birthday and Christmas) as I can understand spacial depth, scale, and simply what blocks will work together.

I love playing with texture and materials, the Banfield our custom millwork line has given me a platform to really express this passion as we have the creative freedom to design spaces with millwork paired with a true understanding of what it takes to craft each and every piece.

The EGO takes a modern twist with traditional shaker door profile and lots of sophisticated detailing.

The Perfect

Bathroom Bathrooms for either a custom new build home or a renovation project are one of our favourite spaces to work on. It seems everyone is looking for a personal space to unwind, relax and rejuvenate. Whether its a main bathroom or a master en-suite these spaces are also an easy way to add personality to any home. When it comes to design and creating a personal space, it’s all about packing in the details and creating something with substance that results in that “spa bathroom”.

Natural elements such as stone and wood are fun ways to connect with nature. We wanted to incorporate a textured material with some life, possibly natural stone, but our clients like most were nervous of the the maintenance and porous properties of a natural stone in a growing family’s bathroom. With today’s technology in porcelain tile, high definition printing and the durability of a man made product, a porcelain tile from Julian Tile (Instagram: @julian_tile) was the answer. Every bathroom space deserves a touch of luxury, one trend we are seeing is wrapping the same material not only on the floor but up the walls, from floor to ceiling. This details makes the space feel more sophisticated, larger and brighter as your eye travels up to the ceiling. Wrapping tile up all walls makes for a more watertight space.

Texture and the beauty of wood is a key way to add depth to any space.

Here we play with a contrasting natural walnut vanity crafted by The Banfield (Instagram: @the_banfield) . The natural growth rings of the walnut is a modern detail with a nod to tradition and paired with the look of marble inspired porcelain tile. The vanity door has a sophisticated twist on a traditional door style, a modified shaker door with an added detail like the beveled edge helped create that sophisticated feel we were going for with the exotic wood grain of walnut.

While playing with the traditional elements and natural looks, we chose a beautiful and practical countertop surface, Caesarstone (Instagram: @caesarstoneca) A fun a modern detail was to specify the countertop ¾" inch thick instead of the standard 1 1/4" . The material looks sleek.

Matching the shower niches from the same slab creates a custom look for the overall space. As the quartz product is non-porous, the material can be use in showers, shower niches, and even shower thresholds, with the luxurious hotel chic feel.

The First Look Spring of 2019, The Banfield launched "The Vanity Collection" in collaboration with The Kohler Signature Store Vancouver.

The curted collection includes Four styles with 22 different configurations in more than 100 different sizes. The team has hand selected eight stunning wood stained finishes and 12 custom paint finishes, to suit any personality inspired by the natural elements of the Pacific Northwest. These stylish funiture pieces are ready to ship within two to three weeks from our British Columbia manufacturing facility.

1. D E S C R I B E W H AT YO U D O I N O N E S E N T E N C E ?

I'm an artist (painter) creating works for everything from fine art, to products, collaborations and murals.

2 . W H E N A N D H O W D I D YO U T R A N S I T I O N F R O M I N T E R I O R D E CO R T I N G T O A R T F U L L T I M E ?

I studied interior design and was working at a boutique home decor shop in Vancouver when I had the opportunity to create paintings to show there. I then began to learn that designers were constantly looking for artwork to use in their projects and as a trend watcher myself, I created work that was complimentary to what was happening in the industry. I realized that I was fulfilling that demand, and decided to take the leap and go full time as a painter. It wasn't easy, but I did everything I could to connect to people who were looking for artwork, and over time started building my business and a reputation through word of mouth and social media. I'm now currently in my sixth year as a full- time artist.

3 . W H AT I N S P I R E S YO U R A R T W O R K ?

As an extremely visual person, I've always been impacted by my surroundings and what I see, but at the same time I just sort of absorb things and hold them in my image memory bank. I'm inspired by other artists' growth. How colours are attached to different feelings and moods. I am influenced by my city, living in Vancouver next to the beach and its beautiful, ever- changing backdrop to my life. I'm inspired by what I want to accomplish. Goals, dreams, ideas of what to create next, travel, fashion. It's really a never-ending story!

4 . W E R E T H E R E A N Y H U R D L E S YO U H A D T O O V E R CO M E I N T H E I N D U S T R Y ?

Oh my god there are hurdles constantly. I think I can sum it up as a few main categories though. 1. Getting seen, That's something I always have to focus on. 2. Paying the bills and making a living a hurdle within this is creative freedom. Every artist just wants to create, but if you are also a business owner that usually has to come first. Right now, I'm pushing my audience to purchase what I make without me having to create as many custom pieces, I think that is when I create my best work. To be free opens so many doors!

5. W H AT ' S N E X T I N F O R YO U ?

Larger collaborations are in the works for me right now, and expansion of my work to more cities outside of Vancouver.

I am launching a new collection (my third) of hand-painted pillows and dog beds this spring, along with new paintings.

BOLD & Beautiful

tradition with a twist “Although I had an idea of the direction I would like the space to take, I didn't know where to begin.

Jamie started with an inspired design and realistic budget”.

Let’s get bold and beautiful! We were invited in to give a major face-lift to a three bedroom rancher in Langley, British Columbia. Designed for an empty nester we wanted to create home that would be welcoming for her sons to visit with her future grandkids, family birthday parties and a place to foster memories. We started the design process getting to know the home owner, how she lives, her habits and the overall feel she wants to have when she opens her front door every day.

When we met with the clients we could see that traditional lived in space was a must, a relaxed but stunning kitchen with a lot of storage and a space to gather. Let’s walk you through some of the design and details that transformed this builder special in to a bold and beautiful home.

THE FIFTH WALL Let’s start with one of the areas most neglected in a home, the ceiling! At first glance the ceiling detail might look existing, we wanted to create a rustic architectural detail, and add some charm to the space. We created faux exposed beams. These beams at first glance look like solid wood but we actually crafted them from stained oak veneer and added the fun details aged brackets manufactured by a local craftsman Birdman The Welder. (Instagram: @birdmanthewelder.)The industrial feel was carried throught out the whole home with metals details such as open shelving brackets and a custom metal hood fan.

Layering traditional element in to the space with the Metrie (Instagram: @officialmetrie) ceiling tongue and groove material and painted white to match all the interior trim. Playing with texture is an easy way to add charm to any space, don’t be scared to add a few elements of texture like the wood beam details, ceiling, metal and the mosaic backsplash. In a large space do not be scared of adding something bold. Here we used Benjamin Moore (Instagram: @benjaminmoore) Polo Blue 2062-10 to add life to this home chefs dream of a kitchen. All the millwork and kitchen cabinetry is shaped with a traditional shaker-style door, which balances out this bold blue.

BACKSPLASH As with most features in this kitchen, we wanted to select a tile that was traditional with a modern shape or size. Working with suppliers such as Ann Sacks (Instagram: @annsacks) we were able to select the Cashmere grey Capriccio Field tile. Taking the tile from countertop to ceiling will make the space feel larger and more curated.

COUNTERTOP SURFACE Caesarstone quartz (Instagram: @caesarstoneca) was a must for our client while being stain, heat, scratch, chemical and mildew resistant. The perfect match to the blue was the stunning 5143 White Attica which was inspired by classic natural marble with beautiful dark grey veining. Don't be scared when you look at a slabs like this. Although it might look bold and have a lot of natural inspired veining, it looks amazing installed, it makes for the perfect statement pieces on the island.

derstand her reservation and found an alternative. A matte black finished worked perfectly with all the other metals in the space. Don't be scared to mix metals, just try and mix them in a subtle way and it will make any space look personal. When mixing metals always layer metals with the same “cool” or “warm” undertone.

FAUCET + SINK The stunning Artifacts faucet is paired with a deep white coast-iron aprom sink, both supplied by Kohler (Instagram: @kohler). This pairing adds a farm house charm to the space. A warm and luxurious finish to chrome is polished nickel. Adding a polished nickel finish to the faucet creates more layering to the space and generates a curated and layered detailed space.

Cooking with MasterChef finalist Eugene Cheng MEET THE CHEF Born in Victoria, British Columbia alongside the Pacific Ocean, Chef Eugene Cheng has always felt that salt water flows through his veins. He launched his culinary career as a finalist of MasterChef Canada Season 5. The judges critiqued his food, calling it “pure genius” and called Eugene “one of the most creative home cooks we’ve ever seen in all five seasons."

Inspired by the world at large, Eugene is on a culinary mission to bond people through experiencing food in unique and innovative ways. Having travelled to 75 plus countries, Eugene brings a varied arsenal of culture, flavour and technique back to his Pacific Northwest style of cuisine. Eugene Cheng is currently the executive chef of the mega-yacht, Ascente. The MasterChef finalist during his free time curate’s exclusive pop-up dining experiences throughout Vancouver, his most recent being featured in Vancouver Magazine.

ABOUT THE DISH BY CHEF EUGENE Within each dish I try to accomplish two things: highlight local and sustainable, in-season produce and bring joy and delight to each dinner.

Growing up on Vancouver Island and living beside the Pacific Ocean my entire life, seafood has always played a significant role in my creations. I’m proud of the local ingredients found in our region and I want to honour them. With mussel and spot prawn season coming soon, I wanted to showcase a dish that’s simple yet versatile, while making use of some unique ingredients which is sure to delight any guest.

It’s all about new exciting flavours. Ingredients that most people walk past in a market can make all the difference in taste and bring that “wow” factor. All of the ingredients for this recipe should be available at your local Asian supermarket.

SOUTHEAST ASIAN MUSSELS + PR AWNS

THE CURRY

• 1 can of coconut milk

• 1 tbsp lime

• 1 stalk of lemongrass (6” of

• 1 tbsp coconut oil

• 2 red radishes (sliced)

• 8 large spot/tiger prawns

• cilantro/radish sprouts

• 2 tbsp fish sauce

• masago/flying fish roe

• lime/calamansi juice

• Asian long green chilli

• 2 kumquats (thinly sliced)

STEPS

1. Remove shells of prawn, leaving tail and head. Season with fish sauce. Heat grill/cast iron to hot. Grill long chili pepper and sear prawns on one side without flipping until the underside has turned almost opaque half-way way up the prawn. Flip once and finish cooking the other-side of the prawn (this side will cook much faster). Set both items aside.

Tip: Skewer the prawns from the tail to the head to prevent them from curling 2. In a medium saucepan with lid, heat all ingredients of the coconut curry (minus the mussels/chili oil). Once the coconut milk mixture starts to boil, add in mussels and close pot with lid. Shortly after mussels open, carefully remove and shuck them. Set curry and mussels aside.

3. In a small bowl, add in the chili oil and equal amounts of the coconut curry. Stir mixture with a spoon and ladle onto one side of the plate. Carefully place your chili peppers, prawns and mussels on the plate. Garnish.

Our Design Secret

Texture The secret in all areas of design is layering with scale and texture. Using different tactile elements and metals is an easy way to create that desired “homey” feel.

ADDING CHARM P L AY I N G W I T H T H E B O N E S When we talk about the bones we are talking about the walls, flooring and anything architectural that will act as the backdrop or canvas for the finished space.

When working on open spaces like a dining room it's important to think about the overall feel you want to achieve and zone in on a base palette, such as these interior walls in Grey Owl by Benjamin Moore (Instagram: @benjaminmoore). Homes in Vancouver can lack charm, layering mouldings is a sure way to create an impactful look for any space. We added simple mouldings and installed them along the walls at a higher than the typical wainscoting to create a layered and cozy detail. It's simple to create using a baseboard, trim and cap moldings by Metrie (Instagram: @officialmetrie) to create the panels. The Wainscoting and the ceiling tongue and groove are both painted the same colour, white. Contrasting elements like the “faux” wood beams and “faux” aged mantel crafted by The Banfield (Instagram: @the_banfield) only add to that aged architectural charm the home was lacking.

C R E AT I N G A F O C A L P O I N T Focal points and features will draw one’s eye from left to right or bottom on top, when we proposed relocating the dining room to the living room space and keeping the fireplace was critical to add those layers and a cozy feel. We wanted to make this fireplace a feature, on first glance it looks like concrete, but it is actually finished in a plaster by local craftsperson Darrell Morrison (Instagram: @cadoroplaster). With plaster, you can add a

You can add a lot of texture to a space using the flooring.

We know the go-to right now is wide planks, so we went back to an old-school details and played with a thin two-inch plank flooring from Divine Flooring (Instagram: @divineflooring). With the selection of a matte white-washed oak finish to update the look. The flooring in this renovation project runs through the whole home, the kitchen, living, dining areas and in all the bedrooms.

We wanted to add some character to the dining space and make this space cozier. We created a “rug” look inlaying a herringbone pattern around the dining table, which helped create a focal point for the dining space.

M I X I N G M E TA L S Metallics are a very easy way to add personality to any space; handles, hardware and lighting need to be used just like jewellery. These finishes can be that "pop" or the perfect statement piece. The key is to layering them just like you would with a cocktail dress. In this space we mixed matte black hardware with a black, rubbed finish on the light fixture and a galvanized living metal on the beam brackets.

FINISHING TOUCHES Adding lived in elements like accessories, handed down furniture pieces, hand made plates, vases and greenery is very important to add that extra layering detail. A simple vase of selected eucalyptus, hydrangeas and thistles add the perfect layer for any space feel complete.

with timeless style "For a young family looking to up-size their home, we had to think of some smart ways to make this new build grow with their family."

Vancouver is a busy metropolitan city surrounded by mountains, lush parks and heritage buildings. A young family looking to up-size their home, we had to think of some smart ways to make this new-build home grown with the young family When discussing the inspirations, needs and habits of the client and her family. We knew they wanted a simple, clean, timeless and of course a stunning kitchen with a lot of storage for the growing family.Designed for a young family of four with a love for cooking and hosting family dinners.

CABINETRY Playing with textures and colours is the key to a transitional space. With the recommendation mix and matching the cabinetry doors, such as a painted shaker and a wood grain slab doors and drawer fronts. When designing kitchens, mixing cabinetry door styles, that are modern and traditional can layer that sophisted feel. Have some fun, and think about details such as the addition detail on the inner profile and of the shaker painted doo style. These little details are maybe not so noticeable at first, but overall, details add depth and charm to this family kitchen and will make any space feel timeless. (Instagram: @the_banfield)

HIDDEN STORAGE We are all about maximizing storage! You can never have enough storage in a kitchen, there are so many gadgets and serving dishes that need to be tucked away from the main kitchen cabinets when not in use. With added storage on the other side of the island. You wouldn't notice when sitting at the island, but its jam-packed full of storage.

COUNTERTOP With the timeless kitchen design we wanted to add a little modern element to the space, we play with the scale of the countertop and went with a 3/4” thick countertop surface with a clean eased edge profile. This saved some money on the budget. Caesarstone countertops were installed. Quartz countertops is the perfect selection for a growing family's kitchen, Caesarstone (Instagram: @caesarstoneca) are a must with it's stain, heat, scratch, chemical and mildew resistant properties.

FAUCE T Matching your faucet with decorative cabinetry hardware is the perfect way to add a cohesive feel to your kitchen space. We matched the above faucet in matte Black finish (Instagrm: @kohler) with the decorative hardware finish to create a fresh and cohesive feel for the family friendly kitchen. The faucet being a modern matte Black finish ties in perfectly with the traditional and contemporary contrast of the overall kitchen space.

BACKSPLASH The client wanted something more classic, and something with more life than the traditional subway tile. Playing with the scale and its layout of somthing simple can elevate the simplest tile..

Inspired by the buildings in Taiwan and parts of Asia. a simple field tile from (Instagram: @annsacks) installed in a stacked pattern is quite modern and something we loved seeing in this kitchen as it adds a sutle focal for the space without over powering other details. Grey grout was used to contrast the tile and give the backsplash some depth and texture. The perfect way to bring in an industrial flair look to any kitchen is wrapping the tile from floor to ceiling, this will help you eye draw up to the ceiling and make the space feel more cohesive.

HARDWARE Mixing and matching cabinetry pulls and knobs can transform a space and achieve that “curated designer" look. Keeping the matte Black finish consistent with the hardware from Bradford hardware (Instagram: @bradford_hardware) and mixing the, shape, size and side can create a well thought out. Playing with little details such as the knobs and handles is an easy way to add depth to any space incorporating millwork.

The secret to "getting the look" is mixing cost-effective pieces with your more expensive investment pieces. In this living room, the investment was made in custom millwork crafted by the Banfield (Instagram: @the_banfield) and a custom bent metal fireplace surround, by Birdman the Welder (Instagram: @ birdmanthewelder). Thick open shelving with integrated recessed lighting were created to showcase the client's special art pieces that she had collected over the years. These investment pieces were paired with a more economical but dramatic porcelain tile from Fontile (Instagram: @fontile) which was selected for the face of the fireplace.

We continued to mix and match investment pieces with less-expensive items when it came to the furniture. The clients wanted to invest in furniture, but not break the bank, I think this is something we all can relate to! In this case our client invested in two custom sofas which fits the clients needs and space seamlessly. A super cost-effective pieces from Structube (Instagram: @structube) and powder coated the base matte black to create a custom look and flow with the rest of the space. We mixed in some stylish yet budget friendly items from local design stores around the city creating a modern and curated living room space.

Laundry Room

Three designer hacks I don’t know about you, but my idea of a perfect afternoon isn’t spent in the laundry room, but there are ways to make your experience a little better. The laundry room, like any other room, needs to be designed well so we have a list of three things you should always think about!

APPLIANCES When it comes to laundry rooms we always reccomned appliances that will work well with the clients needs and habits. These units are some of the best laundry appliances on the market and one of the neatest features is a built in sensor which automatically adjusts drying time to sensing the moister in your clothes. Say goodbye to over and under drying your clothing.

STORAGE The most important thing to think about when designing your laundry room is storage! We like to make sure all clothing are clear and free from clutter so you can easily fold clothes when they come out of the dryer. This means making sure there is a place for everything.

LIGHTING We find lighting to be super important, especially in a laundry room; the majority of the time a laundry room has little or no natural light. When it comes to looking for stains, this can be a little troublesome. We always specify recessed pot lighting for the laundry rooms paired with under cabinet lighting where possible. You can never have enough light!
