Blue Jam Magazine’s Mel Wayman sat down with 20 year old model Alicia Conder from Abingdon, Oxfordshire.

We asked her a few questions about herself and her experiences and about trying to make it to the top in the modelling industry!

A little cafe. Northern Quarter. Manchester.

Seems to be the stomping ground for Blue Jam these days, as it has some of the best backdrops and locations for outdoor shoots Manchester has to offer plus the easiest place for models to endure the gruel of Blue Jam Castings too with the reletive ease (although frustrating) railway links and trams.

People. Busy being busy. An Ant hill of soldiers coming and going. Something the start of an 80’s hollywood movie. A sea of grey and black suits, pounding the streets of New York.

It’s hot. A droplet of sweat rolls down Mel’s face. She grabs the white paper napkin off the recently painted wrought iron table. She wipes her brow. The rest of the napkins are shoved under a table leg to try and stop it from anoyingly rocking on the uneven paving stones. Alicia doesn’t need to stop her make up running. She doesn’t have any on.

A hansom waiter approaches and smiles at Mel. “Would you like to order ladies?” his smile reveals his bright white teeth agaist his tanned skin, still stubble from overnight growth. Mel fumbles the menu, “Erm, I’ll have tea please and a water for Alicia”. With a nod he stoops to take the menu, pauses and gazes at the two models in front of him. He goes to say something “Thats everything” smiles Mel. He turns and retreats to the relatively cooler indoors.

Both watch him without saying a word, until he disappears. Then turn to each other and burst out laughing. ““Well enough of that” says Mel as she opens a fresh pack of cigarettes. Covering her flame from the light warm breeze, she’s lights one. She throws her head back blowing out smoke. With cigarette placed between her teeth she grabs a pad and biro from her handbag. She scribbles the on a piece of paper “It work’s” she says as if surprised. “Ok let’s start”.

Alicia begins “I was just a normal 20 year old, didn’t know what my ambitions were in life, no money, self-conscious, wasting my life in clubs & getting drunk”.

Alicia admits she had always been a bit of a “YES GIRL” and a friend had put the idea in her head to be a model. “I had nothing to lose so she took the bull by the horns and purchased a modelling package with an agency. I got the full works to help kick start my portfolio”.

Knowing the industry was defiantly for her, this would gradually become her life. She pauses as an aeroplanes jet engines overpower our conversation. She looks to the floor, then to her fingers that she is nervously playing with. Eyes up she starts.

“I’ve never really fit in. Not with the crowds anyway. I always thought I was socially awkward. I’d say weird things and I just acted differently and so being thrown into an environment where my creativity was encouraged and my craziness was a positive thing it quickly turns into an addiction”.

“I was shooting two, three times a week! Every spare second I had, would be investing in my modelling career”. She continues “Things that I used to hate myself as a child, were now my super power and even better when I finally had the courage to share my work with the world. I got such a positive response which helped me to carry on and peruse my new dream!”.

The bright sunshine

feels warm. Mel takes off her sunglasses to check her lipstick in the reflection of the cafe window. “Whats your beauty regime ?“ she asks “Do you have one?”

Alicia laughs “Well here we go!! I have always had terrible skin which doesn’t help with my anxiety.

So I see a skin surgeon for some severe cleansing products. I also have a nutritionist to help me with my diet, Vitamin A to stay slim and Vitamin B to help my skin. Sadly I am not a natural blonde so I have my roots done every 4 weeks as well as conditioning treatments. Every two weeks I pop to my local salon and get a fresh set of shellac on my nails. I tint and pluck my own eyebrows – everyone loves a good brow!”. They both fall into laughter.

“What’s your life goal or achievement?”

“I’m not one to think too much about life so I wouldn’t really say I have a goal but that I’m more of an opportunist. However I think it’s always been every girls dream to be published in Vogue. In regards to achievements I would say working with all the amazing photographers, MUA’S and designers is a massive achievement for little Aly from Oxford!”

“Embarrassing moments happen regular”

“My first experience was the full works. It was a shoot I paid for so there was an MUA, shining lights, photographer & hair stylists it was very glam. It was totally what you would imagine a Hollywood model experience to be like. Which was lovely but can also give a false / fake impression of what to expect.

My only advice here to a new model into the industry, is do not get attached to the glam or become disheartened by the lack of it. Some of my best shoots have been in a tiny studio or in a barn where I have done my own makeup.”

Any embarrassing moments?

I don’t get embarrassed to be honest with you, I’m one of those people were if I do something silly or a bit awkward I tend to straight up point it out and just laugh about it.

Despite loving the buzz and excitement of the city, he decided to move from the metropolis for family reasons and runs a contemporary salon in Kent, with his equally talented wife, Tracey Rae. They work as a team and their business employs 12 highly trained stylists. David’s experience, creativity and attention to detail, ensures the salon replicates the same professional standards of hairdressing and customer service as top London salons.

He has a large, international clientele, drawn from the world of business, sport, music and fashion.

Based in New York, Europe and Scandinavia, these clients schedule their appointments when they are in the UK, appreciating that David will fit in with their work commitments, maintain complete discretion and confidentiality and style their hair to perfection.

His work includes regular fashion shoots and session work behind the seances for well-known events, the most recent ones being an assignment for Christopher Shannon, Craig Green, LCM and KTZ of who were all featured in Vogue. David Rae has worked in the medium of television and was delighted to participate in the making of a documentary about Kate Middleton.

Born and raised in Windsor Berkshire with my family , growing up facing many challenges making me the person I am today and learnt to work hard to achieve the best out of life and keeping working towards your goal hard work really does pay off , I’m currently 24 years old working as a unisex hairdresser in Windsor and ritzys hair salon and working hard with my modelling career and getting myself out there , i first got into modelling when I entered miss London city 2015 which taught me about being myself and how to walk gracefully I entered the competition because my main goal in life is to help people and help the world I’ve set a goal that with hard work and determination I will achieve I want to open a orphanage for kids /refugees who are suffering poverty and no where I want to help change the world from suffering and do what I can just need to keep focused , although I didn’t get a place in miss London city everyone was a winner that night for competing and should be so proud it made me want to Persue in the modelling world much more and get on the runway .

With a keen eye for fashion I love to wear things that stand out and unique and love to create some amazing shots now a year on with being in the finals on top model uk and actually won the editorial charity public vote award for raising £1368 pounds for children with cancer U.K. With help from many friend family clients I managed to achieve this a raise a lot of money I couldn’t be more proud

COLOUR INSPIRATION “I can’t say I’ve had any bad experiences in modelling just lessons learnt and growing as a person , everyday is a day to become better , I’ve worked with some amazing photographers and my recent favourite with Jamie Lundy blue jam magazine was by far one of the best shoots I’ve done and had such and amazing time working with team creating some amazing images and couldn’t be happier with the outcome , I’ve worked with many photographers and have enjoyed every own and Learnt from them all at top model I met Tim Fox who Also is a very talented photographer and have done a lot of work with him creating portfolios and for his website I love working with the camera and trying out new shoots and bold outfits”.

COLOUR INSPIRATION Everyday I go strength to strength being my own competition I’m not in competition with anyone but myself I love to see people do well and achieve the best the can as for weaknesses I try to stay positive if it doesn’t work out I just make sure I learn from it and do better next time no point beating yourself up about something you can’t change you won’t be everyone’s cup of tea but it doesn’t matter be you and love you for who you are not what people want you to be My inspiration for models has to be twiggy I love her work and who she is I could name many models that inspire me but there is so many so many of them are strong INDEPENDANT women who own the runway asoon as they step foot on it Kate moss is an ultimate legend who doesn’t even need an introduction that woman WOW !! I’ve always liked many photographers not a great photographer myself hahahahaha my dad has to be the first photographer that I’ve loved as he used to be a wedding photographer the amount of photos I had done growing up as a child and my dad being the photographer was great fun although the hundreds of baby pictures bit embarrassing and they love to show them at family gatherings think everyone gets this , my friend and up and coming photographer Kirsty Corbett I’m so proud of her and her work I done an urban adventure shoot with her and it was such an great shoot .. I love many photographers and different inspirations and ways of shooting and Of course JAMIE LUNDY is so talented and have had the privilege to work with him

COLOUR INSPIRATION I also took part in face of the world at Birmingham fashion week with the guest host being Lewis Duncan weedon and branding me Stephanie with the big hair before I done my walk , I brought along a girl I work with at ritzys hair salon a very good friend of mine Ursula marzec to do my hair for the show and best friend jasmine Soutar to do my makeup they made the experience even better and couldn’t of done it without them and the support from them girls ❤️ face of the world was an experience meeting contestants from all over the world and lifetime friends All in all I will always be the girl who used to play football and slide in the mud without a care in the world crazy and adventurous and willing to try new challenges everyday!

Miss England ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAMIE LUNDY

I am a professional singer/songwriter and music has always been my choosen career. I was entered Miss England by my mum as she thought it would be a great way for me to gain confidence and to make new friends. I had no idea that I would be lucky enough to win the titles and doing so propelled me into a different direction altogether and thats when I started modelling.

My aspirations are to break through and have a career in singing aswel as to explore the many other possibilities in modelling and acting. Im passionate about anything creative. I would also like to continue my work with the Miss England Organisation and the incredible charity work that they do.

I have already written songs for an album that im looking to start recording in the next few weeks!

My diet is pretty normal, I have developed a routine that works for me. I try not to cut anything out of my diet as I think that can cause problems later on; for example I beleieve that if I cut all carbs out the minnute I decide to have some my body will put the weight on much quicker (I have witnessed this many times with friends and family). Instead I try to swap bad carbs for good carbs, like bread for potato. I also tend to eat whatever I like but just monitor that Im not having too much of it and then if I ever feel that im gaining weight I pull back on the snacks until Im back down again. That way I get to enjoy chocolate, cake and pizza knowing my own boundaries. I always try to include fish about 3 or 4 days a week with lots of salad or veg.

I try to excercise 4 time a week but sometimes being busy I will often change days. My beauty regime consists of Crystal Clear Microdebrasion hand held exfoliator and charcoal cleansear, followed by Olay moisturising serum. My skin always feels so clean!

I was so excited for my first experience in the beauty modelling world. I took each experience as a learning curve and soaked up everything I could from other models and the photographers. I find that the trick is always to listen and to remeber that you are a blank canvas that they are going to turn into their masterpiece. It might not always be what your expecting and you might not agree with how you look on a shoot etc, but then again your only their to capture the artists imagination.

My advice to girls starting out in the pageant/model world would be to take every opportunity presented. You will never be known if your never seen. Taking part in the fantastic photoshoots with budding photographers like Jamie Lundy one of the amazing photographers from this very magazine is an experience you can’t buy. You learn all the skills, gain the confidence and then get to keep some amazing shots for your portfolio. I enjoyed my shooting with Blue Jam and luck forward to be doing it again very soon.

Lastly the inspiration I wish to leave with people is to remember that we only have one life. We hear it everyday and it sounds so cliche, but what I really mean by that is you don’t get a second chance at opportunities. Nothings easy but the time will pass anyway, so it may aswel pass with you taking one step towards your goal everyday. Someone is going to get there, so why cant it be you?
