Concordia Golf Club A fun golf course you’ll call home!

T

he key ingredients of attracting golfers to a course are accessibility, playability, conditions, amenities, affordable pricing and a friendly professional staff at registration. All of those qualities can be found at Concordia Golf Club located in Monroe Township in Middlesex County. This 18 Hole 6,300 yard championship golf course offers a variety of playing options to golfers of all skill levels. With 4 sets of tees to choose from, golfers can select the yardage they are most comfortable with to start their round. It is just one of the many qualities that patrons will experience when they visit Concordia.

Concordia was designed by renowned golf course architects, Brian Ault and Tom Clark in the early 1980’s. Ault and Clark incorporated the natural landscape in their design resulting in flat narrow fairways, well positioned bunkers and peninsular greens surrounded by water and buttressed by bulkheads. The golf course has two well designed distinct nines.

The shorter front nine encompasses small greens that place a premium on accuracy. The longer back nine is filled with an abundance fairway and greenside bunkers and water. The picturesque signature 14th hole plays about 400 yards from the back tees and requires a tee shot that must be strategically placed to avoid the water on the right and left side of the fairway. The real hallmark of the golf course is the well manicured and undulating greens.

Patrons constantly marvel about the pristine conditions and the true roll of the golf ball on the putting surface.

Concordia is open to the public for daily fee play and offers affordable weekday, weekend and twilight pricing. In addition, Concordia also offers a variety of affordable membership programs and monthly payment plan options that do not require a large onetime payment. Member benefits include preferred tee times, advance bookings and tournament and event programs to name a few.

Golf course amenities include a Clubhouse, a fully stocked pro shop, locker rooms and a dining facility in the Concordia Café which offers breakfast and lunch. A large driving range along with a practice green and practice bunker are also offered to patrons at the Club.

New Era for East Orange Golf Club 18-hole course in Short Hills offers value and fun for players of all abilities.

N

orthern New Jersey and metropolitan New York area golfers now have a welcome new option for affordable daily fee golf in the area. After a year-long closure during 2014 and a transitional year in 2015 in which the golf course was open for play while an extensive renovation was taking place, the golf course restoration is now complete! Feedback from golfers indicates that it was well worth the wait.

Noted golf course architect Stephen Kay, who has designed such New Jersey gems as Blue Heron Pines, Harbor Pines, Scotland Run and The Architect’s Club, oversaw the restoration. He was supported by an expert team consisting of golf course superintendent Juan Casiano, Turco Golf Construction, Maser Engineering and Marziani & Associates Architects.

The restoration included: • Building two new golf holes • New practice/driving range • New putting green • New irrigation system • Resodding of all greens with improved bentgrass variety • Rebuilding of all tee boxes • Redesign and rebuilding of all sand bunkers • New 6,000 square foot clubhouse and Par 440 Restaurant & Lounge (to be completed later this year) “The goal of the renovation was to restore the old-fashioned charm of the golf course and make it appealing to players of all abilities,” said Kay. “We have re-created a player-friendly and aesthetically appealing golf course that is affordable and allows for a relatively brisk pace of play.”

“After years of neglect, the golf course is now a source of pride for the City of East Orange and the Millburn/Short Hills area in which it is located,” said East Orange Mayor Lester Taylor III. “We are pleased and excited to welcome back golfers to East Orange Golf Club, and are confident that they will find it to be an enjoyable golfing experience for people of all ages.”

Season Passes are now available for East Orange Golf Club. They range from $500 for Juniors to $1,500 for Individual Unlimited. Senior Unlimited Season Passes are $1,000 and Individual Weekday Season Passes are $1,200. East Orange residents and employees receive a 25 percent discount on Season Passes, or a flat daily fee rate of just $18 for weekdays and $20 for weekends.

GPS TECHNOLOGY ESN GOLF Those of you who have been following Publisher’s Picks since we began testing and recommending products to our readers, know that one of our favorite GPS watches is a watch made by ESN Golf, the WR67. Along with offering the the WR67 and the WR72 to consumers via internet sales, ESN has been licensing their GPS technology to various branded products offered by Bushnell, Precision Pro, and Golf Buddy.

I know that many of you have purchased the WR67 and have been as excited about this GPS watch as I have. I still use mine religiously when playing and am never disappointed with the correct yardages it provides me throughout the round. I still get emails asking me why there is a “Sold Out” message on their web site and if I knew anything about when they might be available. So, I contacted the owner of the company and got the inside scoop!

ESN has decided to focus their business solely on licensing their technology to other brands and will no longer be selling products under their ESN Golf brand name. The good news is that you can still utilize the accurate, dependable ESN Golf technology with products such as Bushnell’s XS Watch, Precision Pro’s GPS Golf Band, and Golf Buddy’s CT 2 and LD 2 Ladies Golf Watch. technology development, they plan to be coming out with new, exciting products down the road. Their latest creation is a golf glove that has the front, center, and back distances indicator on the glove strap that communicates with an app on your phone which also provides you with more detailed hole information such as aeral views of the hole you’re playing so you can get a better idea of whether there are hazards or bunkers in the way of your approach shots without having to drive up to see for yourself. This is especially useful when playing a golf course for the first time and avoiding slow play. Johnny Miller is an investor in this product so be sure to look for it in the very near future.

GOLF SHOES SKECHERS GO GOLF PRO "I can assure I've never been so excited to finish top three in my life,” Matt Kuchar told Golf Channel after shooting a 63 on the final day and finishing 13 under to take the Bronze Medal at the Rio Olympics.

As we all know, there are so many variables that seem to come together when you are playing well. We often think that a good round is determined by how relaxed and limber your body feels along with the mechanics of your swing and your swing’s tempo, concentration, and so on.

But what about comfort? Is your shirt too large or too tight? Are your shorts too loose? Are you wearing so many layers that you feel restricted? But most important, how do your feet feel?

As comfortable as these spikeless golf shoes are, I, for one, am not a fan for the following reason: my golf clubs were fitted for me while wearing my soft spike golf shoes which makes me stand a little taller over the ball.

Wearing these spikeless golf shoes actually have me standing lower and at 5’8”, I can use all the height I can muster.

“But they’re so comfortable,” you say.

What if there’s a golf shoe with the comfort of a sneaker and the structure of a traditional golf shoe? Enter the Skechers Go Golf Pro. Back to Matt Kuchar. You’ve all seen Matt’s putting tips commercial where he putts the ball and says, “To be really cool, walk off to the next hole before it drops.”

The commercial is trying to equate wearing Skechers Go Golf Pro golf shoes with being cool and stylish. But let me assure you, these golf shoes are very comfortable. The shoe’s last (a last is a mechanical form that has a shape similar to that of a human foot) fits around your foot as opposed to your foot squeezing into the shoe. Most of the better shoes on the market, both for everyday wear as well as golf shoes, have shoe lasts that ensure a confortable fit without needing to break in the shoe. Shoe companies such as FootJoy and Etonic make their shoes with very comfortable shoe lasts. Well, you can now add Skechers to that list!

By Mike Rose eventeen years ago, I started coaching golf at Penn State University’s Abington campus. It wasn’t a big time program, we played mostly community colleges and other Penn State campus teams. But coaching was something I always wanted to do, and thought that my many years of playing and competing at a high level might be helpful in teaching the kids the game and learning the lessons in life that golf offers. So I wrote down “Rose’s Rules of Golf” in that effort. Now 17 years later and with today’s improved technology, here’s the updated revision, in hopes that it will help you more than it did for my team.

S

GOLF COURSE MANAGEMENT The Mental Game Nicklaus, Hogan, Floyd, all the greats will tell you that golf is 75-90% mental, so work on that part of the game too. Start with pre-hot routine. Get your yardage, check the wind, make sure your alignment is correct, visualize the shot and pick the right club.

It’s not where the good shots go,it’s where your misses end up. Minimize your mistakes.

My Mom always told me to tee up on the side of trouble and hit away from it. Good advice.

I find that practice swings are overrated. A perfect practice swing is a waste, and I hate it when players take a big divot. Just take one easy swing, then set up, relax and go. And don’t over think. As my friend, and 2-time Philly AM champ Mike Tash always tells me, “if you’re thinkin, you’re stinkin.”

AROUND THE GREEN Miss the green, don’t always grab your sand wedge. It’s the right club when there’s not much green or if you need to fly it to the pin. But if you’ve got plenty of green to work with, drop down to your PW or lower trajectory club. Get the ball on the green as soon as possible and get it rolling like a putt. That way you might just hole it from time to time. And hybrids are a good choice too if you’re on the fairway on closely mowed areas.

PUTTING Books have been written on putting, but here’s just a few key observations. Slow greens, play less break, hit it firm, the ball shouldn’t go too far by. 9 out of 10 balls that are short do not go in (still trying to figure out what that 10th putt does). Fast greens, play more brake, visualize the ball falling in the cup on the high lip. That will keep the 3-putts to a minimum.

DAMAGE CONTROL Lower your scores by playing smart, avoid the big number, make bogey your 40

friend. When in trouble, get the ball back into play. If you’re in the trees, don’t always go low, look up to see if there’s some space, it’s the 90% air theory. When laying up, LAY UP, don’t try to get the ball too close to the trouble. When playing safe, PLAY SAFE! This is not the time to be aggressive, make that bogey and move on.

GEMS OF WISDOM These Gems of Wisdom which should save you shots, aggravation, and make the game more fun for you and your companions.

1 Golf is great as exercise and competition. It’s also good for business. Get to know your fellow players. You learn a lot about people, the good and the bad, when you play with them on the golf course. It’s called networking and golf’s the best at that.

1 Keep up your pace of play. Help others look for balls, be ready when it’s your turn or play ready golf, whoever’s ready, hit it and go, and putt out whenever possible.

Remember, you’re not playing in the US Open.

1 Know the Rules of Golf or keep a copy of the book in your bag. ALWAYS carry an extra ball with you. When in doubt of a lost ball or Out of Bounds, hit a provisional ball(stroke play only). It doesn’t take much time to hit a provisional, doesn’t cost you anything and it’s much better than walking back to the tee to reload (I just hate that!)

1 When playing WINTER RULES (preferred lies), make sure to give yourself the best possible lie. The rules are there to help you, take full advantage when you can, i.e.

Ground Under Repair, cart paths, etc. You can bet your competitors will.

1 Never stand in front or to the right of anyone, I don’t care how good a golfer they may be. Even the best players can hit the dreaded “unmentionable”. Keep your eyes open at all times.

1 Sounds simple, but always use a tee on the teeing ground. The pros do. (This rule can be disregarded if you are Lee Trevino or you’ve won a major).

1 Golf etiquette – simple things for a better day for all. Be quiet and stay still when players are hitting. Know your yardage and wind direction when it’s your turn to play, so you can pick a club and hit the shot. Putt out whenever possible. 3 ½ hours is your targeted time for 18 holes. Enter the sand trap from the low side, and rake the trap on your way out. Fix ball marks and replace divots or put down seed.

ROSE’S RULE FOR TURNING PRO With the vast amount of money being played for on the tour and the allure of the fame that can be achieved on TV and in the media, too many young golfers are turning pro these days. If you’re thinking about making that decision, you better be shooting well below par on your own course and winning every tournament you play, preferably on a national level. But more important, you better to be able to beat Mike Rose at least 9 times out of 10 before you even think about it.

In closing, feel free to disregard any of the above, as this writer does frequently.

I’m aggressive whenever possible, hardly ever chip out, I just hate that. I go for the great shot whenever I can It may not always work but it always makes for a better story in the grille room’s post game conversation. Ugly golf gets results, it’s worked for me.
