Surf, Sun & celebrate! Huntington Beach 4th of July committees large and small have created memorable celebrations here for 109 years. There must be something in the Surf…? the Sun…? Well we know every year we certainly want to Celebrate!

decorations on their homes and in their front yards that all parade goers and parade participants can enjoy before, during and after the parade.

This year’s Huntington Beach Fourth of July Executive Board and its numerous volunteers have worked tirelessly since last September to plan this year’s annual parade and accompanying events. Sponsors who make it all financially possible return again and again and new sponsors join their ranks every year.

The 109th Annual 4th of July Parade, lasting more than two hours, is always exciting, as radio, television and film celebrities, US military units, community groups, elected officials and dignitaries, equestrians, marching bands from near and far and beautifully decorated floats pass by. It’s estimated the parade is viewed by approximately 200,000 people.

Themes play a large part, setting the mood for Huntington Beach’s famed parade, Surf City 5K Run and Fitness Expo, Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast in Lake Park, Pier Plaza Festival entertainment and nighttime Fireworks Over the Ocean at the pier. Homeowners on the Main Street parade route get caught up in the excitement too with elaborate 4th of July themed

In summary, it’s a long day on the 4th of July in Huntington Beach with non-stop activities from 6 AM to well past dark. You can participate as much as you desire or maybe you look forward to just listening to the surf, under the warm sun and to celebrate by just enjoying the moments, all strung together, to make your perfect day. Happy 4th of July!

A Fourth of July Welcome From Mayor Connie Boardman Welcome to the Annual Celebration of our fabulous Fourth of July Parade with the theme of “Surf, Sun and Celebrate.” One hundred and nine years ago, the residents of Huntington Beach held a Fourth of July parade even before the City was incorporated. That is how important this event is to our community. Even though the automobiles have changed, the floats are more “high tech” and the band members sometimes wear Hawaiian shirts and sunglasses, one thing has not changed… The Huntington Beach Annual Fourth of July Parade is still the best community event of the year and celebrates our city’s commitment to our country and its independence. It showcases the dedication of our residents and leaders and demonstrates the collaboration of our volunteer groups, elected officials and businesses. Congratulations to our grand marshals and honored guests who are the ambassadors of the parade. We are so proud to have you all in our city to share this extraordinary day with the Huntington Beach Community. A special congratulations to our Community Grand Marshal—Ralph Bauer. Ralph is by far a deserving individual who sets an example for all of the consummate volunteer. We wish you all—residents and visitors alike—a safe and entertaining July Fourth. Thank you for joining us to celebrate our community’s best event. Your support and demonstrated patriotism is what makes Huntington Beach so special and this event so wonderful.

TNT Fireworks Founded more than 95 years ago, TNT fireworks come to Huntington Beach as the official 4th of July fireworks wholesale distributer in the city. Their company currently distributes in 46 states, London and Puerto Rico. In California, over 2500 nonprofit groups in 291 communities fund raise every year with TNT fireworks during the week before the 4th of July. This year, TNT will work with ten HB based organizations: HBHS Baseball, South HB Girls Fastpitch, HB Youth LaCrosse, Marina HS Football, American Legion Post 133, Golden West Swim, Edison HS Model UN, Edison HS Band Boosters, and HB Jr. All American Football. All organizations were chosen from a drawing. 2013 marks the end of a two-year trial in Huntington Beach for legal sales and discharge of fireworks. Last year was a huge financial success for participating community nonprofit organizations. Most groups are youth organizations and profits from fireworks sales allow them to buy new uniforms and create team scholarships for kids who can’t afford to pay to play. One of the non-profits is a veterans group that benefits servicemembers returning from active duty. Our thanks to TNT Fireworks Company for supporting the 4th of July Board and the many nonprofits involved in selling safe and sane fireworks again this year.

28

rules regarding fireworks use Building on the tremendous success of Safe and Sane fireworks sales last year, the City will once again allow the use and sale of fireworks to assist non-profit groups in raising money, as well as raising money for the Fourth of July event. A drawing was held at a city council meeting and ten non-profit groups were chosen. Those groups have been working with TNT Fireworks to set up the booths around town. Fireworks sales are limited to July 1, 2, 3 and between 12 noon and 10:00pm and on July 4th, between 10am and 8pm. Those are the only times groups will have their booths open to sell the Safe and Sane TNT fireworks. July 4th is the only day fireworks can be discharged. They can only be discharged between 12 noon and 10pm. The discharge of TNT fireworks during any other time is prohibited and subject to a $500 fine for the first offense. There are several strict regulations regarding the discharge of the fireworks. All fireworks other than TNT fireworks are prohibited in all areas in Huntington Beach. A full listing of fireworks regulations can e found at the following link: http://www.huntingtoneachca.gov/ government/charter_codes/fireworks-ordinance.pdf

2013 Celebration logo designer patrick carrie Patrick Carrie was born and raised in California and probably will never leave. He’s seen 48 of the United States and a few places abroad, but appreciates having the mountains and sea within reach. When he’s not using his graphic design skills he digs record collecting, surfing, playing in too many bands, burritos and watching cartoons with his kids, Cooper and Charley Finn and his lovely wife Carolyn.
