Celebrating Freedom on July 4th More than 107 years ago, the people of Huntington Beach started a tradition of Celebrating Freedom. With our nation’s Independence Day as its backdrop, young and old gathered along Main Street to cheer as the parade passed by. A day at the beach was in order complete with hot dogs, ice cream, cool sodas and cotton candy. City parks were filled to overflowing with sack races, watermelon and pie eating contests and sun-kissed kids energized by the wonder of it all. As the years glided by, Huntington Beach’s 4th of July Celebration became a year-round volunteer effort with a parade that has evolved into more than 300 entries featuring celebrities, bands, community groups, floats, local and regional dignitaries and honored members of our armed forces who have preserved the security and freedom of our country since its inception. Now known as the “largest 4th of July Parade west of the Mississippi,” folks come from miles around to see the parade and enjoy the day. Events have been added that now include an entire day of celebration. Starting with the early morning Surf City 5K

Run and Fitness Expo, and the Pancake Breakfast in Lake Park, these early birds can claim easy parking and a prime viewing location ahead of an expected crowd numbering in the tens of thousands along the historic Main Street Parade Route. Entertainment that lasts the whole afternoon can be enjoyed at the Pier Plaza Festival on the Pier at Main and Pacific Coast Highway. Displays, food, souvenirs, and activities for kids of all ages fill the hours while last minute preparations are made for the spectacular night time Fireworks Extravaganza shot from the end of the Huntington Beach Pier. At dusk all eyes turn toward the Pacific as the first shells light up the night sky. This fun-filled day will capture the imagination of all who embrace the idea of Celebrating Freedom. Join us for all the fun. Bring your family, neighbors and friends to Huntington Beach’s largest celebration of the year—the 107th Annual Huntington Beach 4th of July Parade and Celebration where everyone in town will be Celebrating Freedom!

A Fourth of July Welcome Welcome to the Annual Celebration of our fabulous Fourth of July Parade. One hundred and seven years ago, the residents of Huntington Beach held a Fourth of July parade even before the City was incorporated. That is how important this event is to our community. Even though the automobiles have changed, the floats are more “high tech” and the band members sometimes wear Hawaiian shirts and sunglasses, one thing has not changed… The Huntington Beach Annual Fourth of July Parade is still the best community event of the year and celebrates our city’s commitment to our country and its independence. It showcases the dedication of our residents and leaders and demonstrates the collaboration of our volunteer groups, elected officials and businesses.

r o y a M m Fro Carch io Jo e

Congratulations to our grand marshals and honored guests who are the ambassadors of the parade. We are so proud to have you all in our city to share this extraordinary day with the Huntington Beach community. A special congratulations to our Community Grand Marshal—Natalie Kotsch. Natalie is a deserving individual who sets an example for all of the consummate volunteer. Also congratulations to the Bill Gallienne Awardee—Former Community Services Director Jim Engle. Jim spent his career making sure the City’s quality of life was enhanced through recreation and human services. We wish you all- residents and visitors alike- a safe and entertaining July 4th. Thank you for joining us to celebrate 100 plus years of our community’s best event. Your support and demonstrated patriotism is what makes Huntington Beach so special and this event so wonderful. Zambelli, the First Family of Fireworks, combines four generations of family fireworks expertise for the Fireworks Spectacular that will light up the night sky over the Huntington Beach Pier. Established by patriarch and one-time fireworker, Antonio Zambelli, the Zambelli Fireworks Manufacturing Company is now known world-wide as the industry standard in design and technology. Headquartered in New Castle, PA, the Zambelli family carries on the dreams, dedication and precision infused into the business by Antonio. Fireworks music is choreographed by Jeff Eidemiller. As always, Jeff does a great job of mixing popular music along with traditional and patriotic music that audiences expect at a fireworks show. All afternoon, the 4th of July Celebration’s exclusive Radio Partner, K-EARTH 101, will provide music between performances on the K-EARTH 101 Stage and LIVE on the Plaza at the Pier Plaza Festival from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Just prior to the Fireworks Show at 9:00 PM, Soul Shadows will perform. Since 1999, the Soul Shadows have been performing jazz, swing, R&B, soul, Motown, funk and disco throughout Southern California. With both male and female vocalists and a dynamite horn section, they authentically recreate the sounds of your favorite artists. Reserved fireworks show seating is available on the HB Pier. Happy 4th of July to everyone!

Our Fourth of July celebrations are perhaps even more special this year. It is almost ten years since terrorists destroyed people and buildings in an all out effort to annihilate America. They misjudged one factor— the American people, their courage and tenacity. As we watch our spectacular parade, look at the smiling faces around you as we all rejoice in the freedom and the strength in adversity of our great nation. And please hold a special thought, on this celebratory day, for all the brave men and women who would love to be waving a flag with us, but instead are risking their lives in countries around the world, to keep our lives here sane, safe, and peaceful. Of course, we wouldn’t have a parade at all if it wasn’t for the effort and dedication expounded to the City of Huntington Beach by the Fourth of July Executive Board, and for the continued support of our ever generous sponsors, who provide gifts of hotel rooms, food, and parking spaces, restaurant meals, merchandise, and media coverage that tells the world what fun we are having. Add the welcome cash donations, and all who contribute to create a fabulous Fourth. Every company, town or group who worked hard to build a beautiful float for us to see, the young people in the bands who have practiced hard to be able to make great music for us, all add joy to our day. Our city employees, who volunteer their help and expertise in every capacity to make sure that everything runs safely and smoothly for everyone. Thanks and appreciation is given to all these caring individuals and groups. Whether you are lucky enough to live in our beautiful city, or maybe you are visiting from across the nation or the even the sea, please enjoy this very special day in Huntington Beach! When Natalie Kotsch arrived in Huntington Beach in 1976, she didn’t just find a place to live, she jumped into community service. She chaired the committee to develop the first ordinance for Mobile Home Park Conversion and the Downtown Merchants Guild.

And, in the early 1980s, the vision that would become her life’s work and passion began to take shape: a museum celebrating the surfing culture that had put Huntington Beach on the map. Its purpose is to tell the story of surfing and it’s historic link to “Surf City.” In 1987, a small, city-owned building on Walnut became its location, and in 1987, the Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum was officially opened. Small but dynamic, the museum has become an international icon and houses some of the most valuable artifacts of surfing culture in the world, including fellow parade honoree, Dick Dale’s, first electric guitar.

Along the way, Natalie earned the distinctions of Citizen of the Year in 1991, Realtor of the Year in 1992, and was inducted into the Surfing Walk of Fame in 1998.

Natalie Kotsch

In Natalie Kotsch, a small town Canadian girl turned surfing icon, “Celebrating Freedom” meant the freedom to celebrate her community, dream big and leave a place better for having lived there.

Darrell Sheets 16

Ever the gambler, Darrell has been addicted to the “high” of storage auctions for 32 years. While others have turned the gambling side of storage buying into steady businesses, Darrell is always going for the “big hit.” Boasting a big game, Darrell is quick to tell you about the four Picassos and the world’s most lucrative comic book collection that he has scored through storage auctions. With his son Brandon, Darrell has a small operation based on low volume, no overhead, and high value. If a locker doesn’t have the big score, Darrell will sell it away before he picks through it. After years in the business, Darrell no longer collects: “The only thing I collect these days is dead presidents.” Darrell takes pride in the adventure and education storage buying has provided him. It’s a lifestyle and skill set he hopes to pass on to his son.

The Thundering Third Marching today in the parade are members of the official military family of the city of Huntington Beach, the 3rd Battalion / 1st Marine Regiment, out of Camp Pendleton, CA. In 2005, the city of Huntington Beach, by proclamation of the city council, adopted the storied “3/1,” and the Huntington Beach 3/1 Marines Foundation was formed the following year to oversee all programs, projects and activities between the battalion and the community. The “Thundering Third” dates back to WWII and has participated all major theater events since: Korea, Vietnam, Operation Desert Storm, Operation Desert Shield Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, including the successful campaign to take Fallujah, among others. The city of Huntington Beach and hundreds of community members have rallied around the “Thundering Third” to send care packages, provide emergency aid to families, hosted the annual Marine Corps Ball, and much, much more. On July 30th, the Foundation will host a “Battalion Family Day” on the beach at Camp Pendleton. This is the 2nd time this event will be staged and anyone interested in supporting the event should contact the 3/1 Foundation at 714/375-3131.

Best Buddies blues band “It’s pure joy,” says Chris Hamilton, highly acclaimed teacher and band leader at Dr. Martin LeBoldus High School, giving his best definition of the Best Buddies Blues Band. “There’s a genuine love of music, of performing, of friendship and it’s all about inclusion at every turn.” The Canadian high school group from Regina is performing at Disneyland on June 30th and California Adventure on July 1st. Then the group is coming to HB for the 4th of July Parade, and to enjoy our sunny shores with a picnic on the beach near the Pier where they can explore the Pier Plaza Festival, and take in all the entertainment before settling down on the beach for the Fireworks Show. Created and nurtured by Hamilton, the Best Buddies Blues Band is part of Regina Catholic Schools program for adolescents with intellectual disabilities who require alternate education programs and services. Welcome to Surf City!
