Valedictorian – Courtney LeAnn Thomas is the daughter of Clinton and Nancy Thomas. While at Ragsdale, she participated as a peer tutor, was in the National Honor Society, Beta Club, a Student Council representative and was a varsity cheerleader for four years (captain her senior year). As a Pilot Elementary School mentor, Thomas helped students with learning vocabulary. She also volunteered with the Wake Forest Baptist Hospital and Guilford Native American Association. Thomas was a scholar athlete for four years and received a “Best All Around” award for cheerleading. She received a service learning diploma, AP Scholar of Honor, Red Cord Honor from the American Red Cross, University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill Chancellor’s Science Scholar ($10,000 yearly) and UNC-CH $5,000 Study Abroad award. She was accepted to UGA and Duke University, as well as UNCChapel Hill, the UNC cheerleading team and UNC honors program. In the fall, Thomas plans to attend UNC-Chapel Hill where she will participate in the UNC
Honors program and on the cheerleading team. Her studies will include a pre-med track. She will major in psychology and minor in neuroscience. She hopes to attend medical school at UNC and become an orthopedic surgeon. Salutatorian – Louis Alexander Blaya. He is the son of Richard and Susanne Blaya, he was treasurer of the National Honor Society, member of the Beta Club, captain of the school varsity cross country team, participated on the indoor track and outdoor track teams and was vice president of the Wounded Warriors Club. Blaya volunteered as a counselor at Camp Carefree for one year. He was an AP Scholar with distinction, received the William H. Guyer award (given to a Ragsdale scholar athlete) and was MVP of the cross country team his senior year. Blaya plans to attend the University of California, Los Angeles, and major in aerospace engineering. He would like a career with SpaceX or NASA. Alexandra

the daughter of Eric and Nicole Apple of Greensboro, graduated third in the Ragsdale Class of 2016. She served as captain of the Ragsdale varsity cross country, indoor track and outdoor track teams, qualifying for the state championships in cross country and indoor track her junior and senior years. She met the National Silver Elite standard for the 5000 meter and 3200 meter runs and was named AllConference. In addition to receiving the Ragsdale Diamond and Coach Smith awards for track, she was recently presented the U.S. Marine Corps Scholastic Excellence and Distinguished Athlete awards and AP Scholar with Distinction award. She is a peer tutor and member of the National Honor Society and Key Club. She was a junior marshal. Apple volunteered in the community with various organizations including the Out of the Garden Project and Project Unify, receiving a Service-Learning Exemplary award. Apple has been a member of the Greensboro Pacesetters Track Club and national qualifier in Junior Olympics Track and Field. She is a confirmed member of
First Lutheran Church. Her future plans include attending the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill in the fall and majoring in business.

Morgan Layne Gunter is the daughter of Scott and Karen Gunter. While a student at Ragsdale, she was president of the National Honor Society, and a member of the Karma Club, Beta Club and Peer Tutoring. Gunter is a member of the Jamestown United Methodist Church Youth Group where she participated on a number of mission trips including Nashville, New York City, Philadelphia and Hazard, Kent. She also helped deliver “baskets of love” to shutins and volunteered with the Miracle League. Gunter served as a counselor at Camp Carefree and raised money for Jamestown Middle School’s special needs class to go to Special Olympics. Gunter received a Randol Hobert Smith Memorial Scholarship and North Carolina State University Centennial Scholarship. She was a junior marshal and AP Scholar with Honor. As a student at Ragsdale, Elizabeth Patterson Stamey, the daughter of Katherine Stamey, was vice president of Peer Tutoring, secretary of the Karma Club, and a member of the Beta Club, National Honor Society and Key Club. She belonged to the Jamestown United Methodist Church Youth Group where she participated in five mission trips, the Miracle League, delivered “baskets of love” and helped with Operation Christmas Child. Stamey took part in the Governor’s Page Program and worked at Subway for three years. She volunteered at the JUMC Outreach Center. Stamey was a recipient of the Mary Eakes Scholarship and Justin Payne Simmons Scholarship. She was on the A/B Honor Roll in the ninth and 10th grade, All A Honor Roll in the 11th grade and was a junior marshal. She was the Morehead-Cain nominee for Ragsdale. Stamey will attend the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill in the fall. She plans to major in psychology ad attend graduate school for speech pathology.
