MIZEN TO MALIN TO MANILA The early building blocks of the 10 Foundations organisation are the brainchild of an inspirational grandfather o f f o u r, f r o m N e w c a s t l e . I a n C a m p b e l l ’s b a t t l e w i t h prostate cancer and the loss

ith a fresh perspective, Ian realised he was in position to help others. Together with his wife and daughter, he started Cupcakes for Cancer, an organisation that sells homemade cupcakes, and quite delicious ones at that, with all proceeds going to help cancer victims. But it wasn’t until a visit to the Philippines, before the seeds of Ten Foundations were sown. On his trip, Ian came face to face with the poverty that is suffered by nearly half of the Filipino child population. “We found children as young as 3 years old living in doorways, searching and digging for food in the surrounding rubbish tips.” “These kids had been abandoned by the parents, who are unable to provide for them. There was a case of a young mother who had just given birth, after telling the nurses she was going to the shop, she left and never returned.”

This is an almost everyday occurrence in the Philippines, but Ian was quick to stress the warmth and beauty of the Filipino people. “The distribution of money in the country is hugely imbalanced, yet they are always open, warm and incredibly friendly” So, with this fresh in mind Ian returned to Newcastle with the aim of highlighting the plight of the young of the Philippines. Thus, Ten Foundations was born. “Here at Ten Foundations we’ve seen the deprivation and sheer poverty young children live through everyday on the streets of the Philippines, so we understand the positive impact a safe place to call home will have on their lives. “ “We also know that by providing this safe environment we can open doors to education and learning, empowering them and helping them build a better life” In early 2013, the aim is to build 10 purpose built homes across the Philippines. of his business and home only 3 years ago didn’t cause him to feel sorry for himself or look to others to blame. Instead he began to wholly appreciate what he did have- a loving family and his health.

THE BIG INTERVIEW environment, providing young abandoned and neglected children with a safe place to call home for their protection, guidance and security”. There are a number of trustees currently working in the Philippines now, arranging temporary accommodation for neglected children. “We have just found a rental property which will provide shelter and care for up to 20 children. We currently have 4 children to begin with, they are all girls with ages ranging from 6 months to 6 years. “ “We have 3 staff members who, between them, will give care and guidance to the children 24 hours a day” However, this all costs money, and this is where the generosity of the general public comes in. It will cost £1500 a month to keep a unit running with all its provisions. “If 300 people donate only a fiver a month, we can cover the costs of our current unit and really concentrate on driving the 10 new homes forward” Looking to gain the much needed support and publicity for the charity, Ian is embarking on an incredible journey. He will cycle from Mizen, at the bottom of Ireland, to Malin Head, all the way at the top. As if that wasn’t incredible enough for a man who

is eligible to collect his pension- he will be doing it in one go- Non-stop for 30 hours in the saddle! The journey has been made ever so slightly easier, with some generous donations. “Virgin Active in Belfast was kind enough to donate a years free membership to there gym. While Decathlon donated an incredible bike worth £2500.” With all the tools in place its still an amazing feat to be undertaking, with a large amount of time committed to training. “I’ll do maybe 2-3 days a week at the gym, mainly cardio work, and then go on a day ride of around 60-80 miles. I have to make sure I do some weights work as well, to keep my strength up. And recovery shakes are vital in making sure the muscles heal, allowing me to train as regular as necessary.” The ride is set to take place at the end of August, and everyone can help support Ian on his nonstop adventure from Mizen to Malin, or jump in the saddle and join him on route. HAVING opened for Easter time, and already enjoying very favourable reactions up and down Main Street, the Savoy Cafe is a contemporary twist on the cafe of the same name that originally fed and watered Newcastle's residents going back as far as the 1930s. New proprietors Paddy & Eileen Mallon decided to revive the Savoy Cafe name, and have opened up a modern, fresh cafe on a site adjacent to where the first cafe existed, over 80 years ago. Now busy shoppers can choose from the mouthwatering array of prepared-to-order sandwiches and hot lunch options, or if they just want a quick tea or coffee, served with scrummy homemade traybakes or scones. The Savoy breakfast menu, served from 9am to midday, has all tastes catered for, from the full fry through to a deliciously light toasted teacake, topped with cinnamon bananas and Greek yogurt. The lunch dishes available continue the trend of great ,tasty variety, with a selection of freshly made soups and sandwiches on sale, boasting tempting and unusual fillings, such as Kaffir lime and lemongrass chicken with smoked paprika mayonnaise, or Brie with spinach, red onion and sundried tomatoes.

A new facet the Savoy Cafe will be offering is late night closing on Monday, where food and drink is served through until 10pm, and accompanies a regular new musical spot, where local artists will be gathering for a "Beat the Monday blues" acoustic session to entertain those still out and about. A WiFi service is fully available to all customers, so you can enjoy browsing freely whilst sipping on one of the huge range of delicious Fairtrade teas and coffees, or fresh smoothies that are on offer. With a comprehensive takeaway and sandwich order service in place as well, the Savoy Cafe is a great new addition to the Main Street, offering both fresh, tasty, homemade hot and cold food (using organic, locally sourced ingredients where possible) for breakfast and lunch, as well as a relaxing haven for a quick coffee and a catch up with friends. But, thanks to a brief miracle last month in Marchâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mini-heatwave, it now seems almost touchable that we could indeed once more open the patio doors and light the fires â&#x20AC;&#x201C; on the BBQ that is!

HEALTH & BEAUTY WHETHER we get the Mediterranean climate we are after or not for summer 2012, there is still no better time to step up the game on sun-protection for you and your family. It is a well-documented fact that any exposure to the sun should be accompanied by a minimum of SPF15, no matter what the time of year or type of climate you live in. Kylie Minogue thanks her avid daily use of an SPF30 for her flawless complexion and is often spotted shielding her 43 year old face from harsh sunlight under an umbrella or large hat. And I challenge the woman who tried to say they wouldn’t want to look like Kylie when they are 43! Her suspected use of Botox aside, the pintsized pop princess is the perfect example of what sun protection can do for the elasticity, hue and tone of one’s skin. What’s more however, is the fact that skin cancer cases have almost doubled in the last ten years according to the like of The Irish Cancer Society and the Ulster Cancer Foundation, who state these worrying statistics on their website:

“Skin cancer, particularly malignant melanoma, is continuing to rise in Northern Ireland and rates are increasing by an average of 4 men and 9 women each year. Research has indicated that this trend will continue and we could see a trebling of malignant melanoma rates over the next 30 years with people being diagnosed at a progressively younger age.” (Ulster Cancer Foundation 2012) Experts believe that the extreme tanning be-

haviors of the 1970s and 1980s, before skin cancer information was so readily available and not so commonly heard of, are responsible for the constant rise in instances of melanoma in this century. Sunbeds, tanning oils and all-day 'beachingit', were habit when the package holiday became a reality for every blue-collar family all over the UK and Ireland. It's easy to get complacent in the warmer months as we become accustomed to enjoying slipping on flip-flops and leaving the house without a jacket. It’s all part of that far-flung fantasy that we live somewhere exotic and sun-soaked! But let’s not get too carried away and remember that you wouldn’t leave the house without your umbrella during the winter, so why wouldn’t you cover up against the opposing elements in summer?! Some handy tips to remember; If you have a family, big or small, keep a bargain-size bottle of SPF in the bathroom and train younger kids to apply in the morning as part of the regular ‘brush teeth and washing face and

hands’ routine Keep a travel size SPF in your car and/or handbag for unexpected stints in the outdoors or if the weather takes a turn for the better Ladies, always look for foundations and bronzers that contain an SPF. Most nowadays will contain some level of protection and even the cheaper brands have now cottoned-on to this trend, so there is no excuse for not taking advantage of getting extra protection! If you indulge in facials regularly, especially the more intense peels and microdermabrasion option that are on offer, you really shouldn’t walk out in anything less than SPF 30 as they treatments leave the skin more exposed due to the stripping away of dead cells and other congestions during the session. Lastly, be aware of changes in your skin. Take a few moments once a week after a shower or bath and examine areas that have been exposed for significant changes in color or sunspots, as well as any already apparent moles for changes in size or shape.

Toss through some Rocket leaves or throw on a toasted ciabatta. You can even remove the cheese and throw in some onion and a dash of balsamic vinegar for a great chutney style salad. THE FIRST CASTLEWARD CHALLENGE A GREAT SUCCESS THE inaugural Castleward Challenge took place on Saturday last in the majestic Castle Ward Estate, near Strangford in Co. Down. This was a first in more ways than one, as it was also the first event organised by BORN2RUN Events, a local company set up with the motto of organising ‘Great Races in Great Places’. If the feedback from those who took part is anything to go by the organisers certainly seemed to deliver on both counts. The National Trust owned estate proved a perfect setting for an event of this nature and even the weather co-operated on the day. The event offered runners the choice of 2 distances, a half marathon and a 10k option. 236 runners turned up at the start line for these events. The half marathon started at 10am with 104 runners lined up to take on the route which was a multi-terrain course combining a mix of road, shoreline path, shingle track and mountain bike trails. There was a great carnival atmosphere at the start line with sounds provided by Seamus Garland. At 9.55 runners were warmed up to the soundtrack of Bruce Springsteen’s Born to Run and then they were off. Brendan Teer of East Down Athletic Club set off at a blistering pace which he managed to maintain throughout the entire half marathon ensuring that he was the first man over the finish line in 1.17.56. Don Travers of Newry city Runners came 2nd in 1.25.54 and Paul Blayney was 3rd to

finish in 1.27.47. Gillian Cordner of Seapark AC was the first woman home in the half marathon finishing in 1.41.48. Murlough AC’s Donna Mc Cusker was 2nd in 1.44.27 and Clare Kennedy finished in 3rd place in 1.52.16. The 10k race kicked off at 10.30 with a bigger field of 132 runners. John Mc Manus was the winner of imade it look easy crossing the line in 41.47 followed in 3rd place by Dee Murray in 42.21. The final mile of both races required competitors to dig deep for the long slow climb to the finish. The scenery along the route was second to none with blankets of bluebells lining the course and stunning views across the water to Portaferry. Philip Mc Cormack who travelled from co. Kildare to take part said “it’s the most amazing route of any of the races I’ve done in Ireland”. Post race refreshments were available to runners after the race at the prizegiving . BORN2RUN Events thanked all those who helped make the event a success especially volunteers from Murlough AC and East down AC for helping out. Prizewinners were presented with gift vouchers for Belfast store PODIUM 4 Sport. This retro flavoured 3 piece first got noticed on their support slot to the Modfather Paul Weller at his Hyde Park gigs around 2003, and have built up a small but loyal following ever since. With nods to The Meters, The Byrds and The Bees -no pun intended -Little Barrie specialise in an old fashioned, sunshine-filled indie groove, with tons of great hooks & funky drumbreaks, all spearheaded by lead singer Barrie Cadogan's slightly young John Lennon-esque vocals. This album, their debut, features a masterclass in 60's tinged, soulful indie that still sounds as fresh as a daisy today, beautifully produced by Edwyn Colins.

Tracks like loose limbed shaker and album opener "Free Salute", or the gritty blues funk of "Stones Throw" are still great summers day, barbecue 'n' beers fodder, and, despite sounding a little naive and homemade in places, the whole package still comes over as accomplished and solid, as well as being completely and refreshingly unpretentious. I love this album, me, and it still stands up to repeated listening 7 years after release - definitely worth the 2 quid it's going for on Amazon at the moment, anyway.

D avid H olmes Out Of Sight released Nov 1998 on MCA

beauty, that taps the foot as well as soothing the ears. Outstandingly produced, the only possible niggle here is the occasional vocal snippets, clips from the movie, that pepper the album between tracks a la Tarantino, but even they sound cool and rhythmic to these ears. Again, used copies are available on Amazon for under £2, so dip in, as this collection is a smooth, stylish addition to any musical arsenal, perfect for contemporary jazz lovers, who find jazz a bit too much like hard work.

Anyone with even the slightest interest in the huge world of soul music, from Aretha to Amy, should check out Alice Clark. Very little is known of her, and her entire recorded sessions feature here on this collection. But what an amazing collection it is. Taking in the very best elements of

ecstatic Motown, string-laden Philly soul, joyous gospel, and some extremely danceable Northern Soul rhythms, this sweet as sugar selection just improves with every listen - especially if the sun is shining. This remastered version includes all tracks from the original (and only) album released by Alice in 1972, plus some very welcome B-sides - the original vinyl now easily commanding well into three figures on the soul collectors' scene. Whilst the faultless arangements and brilliant songwriting featured are some of the most rewarding soul ever put down, the real revelation here is the vocals of this sadly unknown artist, who swoops and soars over these tracks with such effortless grace and FEELING, that jokers like Leona Lewis and her like should take one listen, shrug and disappear from view completely, finally understanding their actual position in the artistic register. Even the slower numbers, that I tend to skip, are in no way any less compelling than the upbeat tracks. You can tell, I'm a fan, and sadly this is the only album of hers we'll ever have, as she drifted away from the business, never to return , during the mid 70s. Worth it for the first two tracks alone - "You Hit Me (Right Where It Hurt Me) & "Don't You Care", which never fail to brighten up any day.
