The crew of his personal research ship R/V Petrel found the missing ship two miles below the surface and about 500 miles off the eastern coast of Australia, he announced on Monday.

“To pay tribute to the USS Lexington and the brave men that served on her is an honor,” Allen said in a statement.

Sub builder General Dynamics Electric Boat has been awarded a $696.2 million contract modification for long-lead materials for the next for Virginia-class submarines – the first of the Block V attack boats.

Boeing Tests Its MQ-25 'Stingray' Prototype Tanker for U.S. Navy Carriers The T-1 prototype is being offered for the Navy's unmanned carrier-based tanker program.

In October 2017, the Naval Air Systems Command issued a request for proposals for MQ -25 "Stingray" designs. Boeing's Phantom Works, the advanced prototype division, is offering a clean-sheet design called T-1. Work on a version of the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) started in 2012, when the Navy was instead interested in a reconnaissance and strike UAV, and the T-1 prototype was rolled out at Lambert Field in St. Louis for the first time in November 2014, according to Aviation Week. Boeing kept the aircraft hidden from the public until the end of last year when the first photos were released.

The Guardian reports that his children, Lucy, Robert and Tim, put out a statement that includes: “We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today. He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years."

He was 76.

Check out this timeline from The Telegraph for a quick distillation of Hawking's greatest scientific achievements, especially his famed study of black holes. In the early 1970s, he proved that black holes don't just suck things in—they emit radiation (dubbed Hawking radiation) and could disappear entirely. The AP says: As one of Isaac Newton's successors as Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University, Hawking was involved in the search for the great goal of physics — a "unified theory." Such a theory would resolve the contradictions between Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, which describes the laws of gravity that govern the motion of large objects like planets, and the Theory of Quantum Mechanics, which deals with the world of subatomic particles.

That theory was not resolved during his lifetime. The chase goes on.

Hawking famously suffered from motor neuron disease, with which he was diagnosed at age 21. The condition confined him to a wheelchair and necessitated the use of his famous computerized speaking device, but, despite a grim early prognosis, it did not stop him from living another 55 years and making numerous discoveries (and sometimes wild statements and audacious scientific bets) about the cosmos.

In his later years—after the fame and the discoveries and the popular science book— Hawking became a character who liked to have fun with the media. A quick scroll through his mentions on PopMech reveals that the famed professor wanted to play a Bond villain, took to frequently warning humanity about the dangers of killer AI and destroying our home planet, and appeared as himself on TV shows such as The Simpsons and Star Trek: The Next Generation.

He will be missed.

American Confrontation and Cooperation with Russia and China, 1945-2016 Drawing on extensive State Department files, declassified Navy policy papers, interviews with both former top officials and individuals who were involved in incidents, David F. Winkler examines the evolution of the U.S.-Soviet naval relationship during the Cold War, focusing in particular on the 1972 Incidents at Sea Agreement (INCSEA). In this volume, an updated edition of his classic Cold War at Sea, Winkler brings the story up to the present, detailing occasional U.S.-Russia naval force interactions, including the April 2016 Russian aircraft "buzzings" of the USS Donald Cook in the Baltic. He also details China's efforts to militarize the South China Sea, claim sovereignty over waters within their exclusive economic zone, and the U.S. Navy's continuing efforts to counter these challenges to freedom of navigation.

Strange story of the SS Warimoo

The passenger steamer SS Warrimoo was quietly knifing its way through the waters of the mid-Pacific on its way from Vancouver to Australia. The navigator had just finished working out a star fix and brought the master, Captain John Phillips, the result. The Warrimoo's position was latitude 0 degrees x 31 minutes north and longitude 179 degrees x 30 minutes west.

The date was 30 December 1899. Know what this means? First Mate Payton broke in, we're only a few miles from the intersection of the Equator and the International Date Line.

Captain Phillips was prankish enough to take full advantage of the opportunity for achieving the navigational freak of a lifetime. He called his navigators to the bridge to check and double check the ships position. He changed course slightly so as to bear directly on his mark. Then he adjusted the engine speed. The calm weather and clear night worked in his favour. At midnight the Warrimoo lay on the Equator at exactly the point where it crossed the International Date Line!

The consequences of this bizarre position were many. The forward part of the ship was in the Southern Hemisphere and the middle of summer. The stern was in the Northern Hemisphere and in the middle of winter. The date in the aft part of the ship was 31 December 1899. Forward it was 1 January 1900.

This ship was therefore not only in two different days, two different months, two different seasons and two different years but in two different centuries-all at the same time.

On March 13, 1942, the Quartermaster Corps (QMC) of the United States Army begins training dogs for the newly established War Dog Program, or “K-9 Corps.”

Well over a million dogs served on both sides during World War I, carrying messages along the complex network of trenches and providing some measure of psychological comfort to the soldiers. The most famous dog to emerge from the war was Rin Tin Tin, an abandoned puppy of German war dogs found in France in 1918 and taken to the United States, where he made his film debut in the 1922 silent film The Man from Hell’s River. As the first bona fide animal movie star, Rin Tin Tin made the little-known German Shepherd breed famous across the country.

The K-9 Corps initially accepted over 30 breeds of dogs, but the list was soon narrowed to seven: German Shepherds, Belgian sheep dogs, Doberman Pinschers, collies, Siberian Huskies, Malumutes and Eskimo dogs. Members of the K-9 Corps were trained for a total of 8 to 12 weeks.

After basic obedience training, they were sent through one of four specialized programs to prepare them for work as sentry dogs, scout or patrol dogs, messenger dogs or mine-detection dogs. In active combat duty, scout dogs proved especially essential by alerting patrols to the approach of the enemy and preventing surprise attacks.

The top canine hero of World War II was Chips, a German Shepherd who served with the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division. Trained as a sentry dog, Chips broke away from his handlers and attacked an enemy machine gun nest in Italy, forcing the entire crew to surrender. The wounded Chips was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star and the Purple Heart–all of which were later revoked due to an Army policy preventing official commendation of animals.

Steffan will broadcast his new show on News/Talk 710KNUS from Groton on Friday March 16th, the evening before Commissioning, during his normal time slot here in Colorado 4 PM to 7 PM. He will be broadcasting from the Mystic Marriott while the Chairman’s Reception is underway and interview members of the crew, Committee and dignitaries attending that event.

Pride Runs Deep Tap Party Next Week Left Hand Brewing has recently released their special IPA release, Pride Runs Deep, in support of the Commissioning.

They will be supplying that brew along with several others of there special beers to the events of Commissioning Week. To celebrate the release of this beer, a beer launch and tap party for Pride Runs Deep will occur at L3 Taphouse in Colorado Springs next Wednesday the 7th at 6 PM. They are located at 817 Colorado Ave in the Springs.

USS Colorado (SSN 788) Commissioning Committee usscoloradocommittee.org Colorado Thirty Group Plaque at Capitol At Christening, the Colorado Thirty Group presented a plaque of the Ship’s Crest which is now mounted in the Wardroom. They have made additional copies of the crest and presented them to the Pentagon and Colorado Springs City Council. The third copy will reside in the State Capitol in Denver. The unveiling of this crest at the Capitol will occur in March 9th ceremony there.

Excitement Grows for Commissionnig The Committee and all of the Navy organizations involved are finalizing preparations for Commissioning and the surrounding events. There still are number of details to work out. The Committee has packed up all of it’s merchandise for shipment to Groton where it will be on sale at all of our events. Included in the shipment are the traditional Plankowner Plaques for the crew. Two full pallets are en-route.

We are looking for a great event. The Commissioning Ceremony will be held at 11am on Pier 6 North at 11am at the Submarine Base. It will last approximately one hour. Dress for the Commissioning Ceremony is informal. We recommend comfortable shoes, and slacks for the ladies, especially if you plan to tour the ship. USS Colorado will be open for tours after the ceremony until 4pm in the afternoon.

Access to the ship is through a hatch and down a vertical ladder. You will be asked to leave your cell phones topside while touring the ship.

The Commissioning Committee will host a reception on the pier immediately following the ceremony. The menu includes Telluride Tacos, Pike’s Peak Chili, and Western Slope Bison Sliders with bison meat donated by Frontiere Meats of Denver. Dessert will feature Beaver Creek Cake made from recipe provided by the Vollmer Family and chocolate buffaloes provided by Lift Chocolates in Boulder. Left Hand Brewing beer, Balistreri wine and soft drinks will also be available. We hope that you will join us for this very “Colorado” celebration.

Jamie A. Fraser-Loria Captain, U.S. Navy Captain Fraser-Loria is a native of Atlanta, Georgia and attended Wake Forest University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Politics and Speech Communication. She was commissioned as a Naval Intelligence Officer in 1996 through Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida.

Milestone assignments and deployments include Intelligence Officer for Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron One One Seven (VAW-117) in USS CARL VINSON; Targeteer for Carrier Airwing Eleven (CVW11) in USS CARL VINSON; Intelligence Staff Officer with U.S. Seventh Fleet in USS BLUE RIDGE; and most recently, Assistant Chief of Staff for Intelligence (N2) for Commander, Task Force FIVE ONE (CTF-51) in Bahrain. During this assignment she also served as the Director of Intelligence (J2) for the Joint Combined Planning Cell supporting Coalition Yemen Operations Decisive Storm and Renewal of Hope.

Shore assignments include U.S. Forces Korea, NORAD and USNORTHCOM, Navy Personnel Command, Nimitz Operational Intelligence Center at the Office of Naval Intelligence, and the OPNAV Staff where she served as Special Assistant to the 37th Vice Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Mark Ferguson.

Captain Fraser-Loria is a graduate of the Navy Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, where she

earned a Master of Arts in National Security Affairs, with a concentration in Middle Eastern studies. She also completed an associate fellowship with the Chief of Naval Operations Strategic Studies Group in Newport, Rhode Island (SSG XXIII). She is a Joint Service Qualified Officer.

January Dinner Honoring Aviation Safety Expert Dave Soucie During the January dinner the Council was honored to host aviation safety expert and published author Dave Soucie as guest speaker. Dave provided examples of aircraft disasters he has investigated, the need for effective participatory preparations to control and avoid such disasters and guidance on how we may use these techniques to enhance our daily life experiences. The Council also honored NIOC Colorado’s outstanding sailors discussed further in the awards section.

Council Awards/Honors Also honored at the January dinner were Navy Information Command Colorado’s Senior Sailor of the Year CTT1 (IW/SW) Julian Gonzales, Junior Sailor of the Year CTT2 (IW/SW) Tavaris Moore, Blue Jacket of the Year CTR3 (IW) Justice Comeaux, and Deployer of the Year CTT1 (SW/AW) Joshua Whitehead for the year 2017.

USS Colorado Commissioning Committee

Sea Cadets Update

The USS Colorado (SSN 788) Commissioning will be March 17, 2018, in Groton, Connecticut.

The Navy has mailed 1500 invitations, including about 500 submitted through our supporters through the Colorado web site.

We are now collecting RSVPs for the various events and anticipate 3,000 may attend the Commissioning.

Many distinguished visitors have confirmed their attendance to include Governor John Hickenlooper as well as U.S. Senator Cory Gardner, who will give the principle address. Additionally, U.S. Senator Michael Bennet and U.S. Representative Ed Perlmutter’s wife Nancy, Colorado Secretary of State Wayne Williams, Colorado Adjutant General Major General Michael Loh and his wife Diane have also RSVP’d.

The Ceremony itself will feature additional connections to Colorado. The Widefield High School NJROTC unit from Colorado Springs will provide the color guard, and retired Army Colonel Andy Meverden, former Chaplain of the Colorado National Guard, will provide the invocation. One of the WWII veterans of the Battleship USS Colorado (BB 45) will pass the ceremonial spyglass to the oncoming watch as part of the ceremony. It looks to be a great event.

For the post ceremony reception, Frontiere Natural Meats of Denver is donating bison meat to serve buffalo sliders. Left Hand Brewery is brewing another batch of Pride Runs Deep IPA for Commissioning, in addition to offering a diversity of other brews. Balistreri Winery will be donating wine for the event and Lift Chocolates of Boulder is providing chocolate buffaloes. These are just a few of the items that we will have at that reception.

For their January Drill the Lexington Division and Training Ship Colorado cadets had the opportunity to fly as part of the Experimental Aircraft Association’s Young Eagles Flight Program. On January 27th the cadets took to the skies from Front Range Airport near Bennett, taking the controls of experimental aircraft under instruction of the pilots.

The cadets also assisted members of the Bennett VFW Post with some carpentry and cleaning work, and a retirement/replacement ceremony for their American Flag. Additionally, they were inspired and motivated by a talk from a former sea cadet, now a retired Navy SEAL Chief Petty Officer, who discussed the Navy’s core values and the lessons he learned as a sea cadet that helped him get through the rigors of Basic Underwater Demolition/ SEAL training.

Military Appreciation Day On Friday January 26th, several members of the Denver Council and USS Colorado Commissioning Committee attended the annual Military Appreciation Day at the State Capitol.

Speakers at the event included Governor John Hickenlooper and Colorado’s Adjutant General, Major General Michael Loh.

Pearl Harbor Hero James Downing

Legislative Affairs

An honorary member of the Colorado Springs Council of the Navy League, retired Navy Lt. James Downing, celebrated as the second oldest man who endured the Pearl Harbor attack on December 7, 1941, passed away on February 13th at the age of 104. During the attack Jim dodged strafing planes and returned to the USS West Virginia to find it ablaze and sinking, where he fought fires and rescued shipmates.

A true hero, Jim was an accomplished preacher, teacher and author. He strongly advocated throughout his life for American strength, diligence and resolve to avoid another Pearl Harbor-type disaster.

The Council offers our deepest condolences to the Downing family.

During February 2018 Council Legislative Affairs Representative and Regional Vice-President-Legislative Affairs, Brett Nelson, gave presentations on the importance of our maritime services to staffs of three congressional personnel as follows.

On February 9th his presentation, The United States Marine Corps: The Most Ready When the Nation is Least Ready, was given to John Griego, Military and Veterans Constituent Advocate in U.S. Senator Michael Bennet’s office.

On February 15th the presentation, A Critical National Security Asset: U.S. Flag Merchant Marine, was given to Bert Potwin, Constituent Advocate in U.S. Representative Mike Coffman’s office.

On February 27th the aforementioned presentation on the U.S. Flag Merchant Marine was given to Stuart Feinhor, District Advocate, Veterans/Seniors/Healthcare in U.S. Representative Jared Polis’ office in Boulder.

Upcoming Awards On April 12th, the Council will present the Navy League Award for Exemplary Leadership to a deserving midshipman during the annual Tri-Military Awards Ceremony at University of Colorado, Boulder.

On May 1st, the Council will present Navy League Theodore Roosevelt Youth Medals for Outstanding Performance to two Marine Corps JROTC Cadets during an awards ceremony at Northridge High School in Greeley.

On May 2nd, similar awards will be presented to two Marine Corps JROTC Cadets during an awards ceremony at Adams City High School in Commerce City.

Plan now to attend the Council’s Friday, May 18 Gala Dinner honoring the State’s appointees to the Naval Academy, Coast Guard Academy, Merchant Marine Academy and the Navy ROTC university selectees. Plan your reservation early to ensure seating for this sell-out event.

Community Navy Leaguers, family and friends were invited to a personalized tour of Navy F/A-18 Super Hornets assigned to the Tophatters of VFA14 while on a refueling stop at Centennial Airport, this past January 18.

Denver Council president, Dan Puleio, assisted Sailors judging the Regional Sea Perch STEM competition held at the Denver Tech Center 22-24 February. In all, 55 High Schools competed.

Winners are invited to National Competition in the coming month.
