11 Second Club The 11 Second club is a monthly competition where you’re given a audio clip from a film and you have to create an animation from it using an animation technique. I entered the competition in March so the audio was from the film ‘Everything is Illuminated’. I chose to animate in 3D using maya because I wanted to challenge myself, plus I want to improve my 3D animating skills.

I used a per made rigged model from the resources section on the website so that I didn’t have to create my own because that would take too long. With this model I animated it in Maya and then did the post production in After Effects. This involved creating the background, text and placing images with shadows and made them pop in and out of shot. This too me 3 week to complete because I animated one of the characters wrong by animating the lip sinking before animating the movements. The movements on the character were the hardest thing to do because I had to show what they where saying through there performance.

Do It In Ten This is a monthly competition which you are given a theme to animate from. I did this in December so the theme then was ‘Chilly’ (being cold not the food), so I decided to do my animation about a guy taking too long to decide what he wants from the fridge, and after two hours pass he freezes over. I did this because I found the idea very relatable and it’s a common first world problem. Also it’s comedic which is my kind of style and hopefully it gets people laughing.

I created all the components for this animation in Photoshop then animated them in After Effects using the position, rotation, and scale tools with some effects which created the mist coming out of the fridge. I found that with this brief I didn’t manage my time well because it was in December where I was on a cruise for most of 2 and a half weeks, plus Christmas and New Years. So this only gave me a week to do the whole thing so I wish I could of done more to it.

Onform Sketches Onform Sketches is a weekly challenge set on tumblr by a woman called Karoline Pietrowsli, where you are given a shape and then you have to create something on top on the shape. These are my 10 creations and I feel like this brief has improved my drawing abilities and my imagination. However, some of the shapes where hard to think of a design for it like the dragon, the robot, and the rhino because which took me about 2-3 hours to do.

Dazed and Confused For the responsive brief we had to collaborate with other peers on either D&AD or YCN competitions. I chose to do one of the D&AD competitions with two other people, an illustrator and an animator and we chose to do the Dazed and Confused competition because we felt that this competition can give us a lot of freedom in what and how we can create are ideas. The competition was about us capturing the independent spirit of Dazed in four 15 second videos. The videos have to work for social media websites as a group, but the videos must also work as individual pieces as well. To get this across in our videos we showed independence in the way people appear and what their style is can show a persons independence.

What I did for this brief was a stop motion animation using newspaper cut outs. I did this to represent different appearances, and this would show how people can use their appearance as a form of independence. I found this to be quite simple, however it was hard for me to control the lighting because I didn’t have the right equipment and I used my iphone as a light source. I still like how the animation turned out and I feel like it represents what I wanted to get across. I edited this animation in After Effects and placed some masks on it to draw your attention to the animation.

I was also in charge of post production so this is a pieces one of my team mates and what I had to do was put it into After Effects and place masks to focus on the illustrations and made the masks extend in and out to the music. This was simple enough for me to do, however I did have to wait ion my team mates to finish their illustrations so that I can make animations out of them.

This is another pieces of work the one of my team mates did, she created short animations in Photoshop and then handed her work over to me so that I could render then out. I then placed them in After Effects and place effects on top of her animation so that they work well together and all look the same. For me this was again simple but I just had to get the order of them right which I didn’t do at first. I also had to re frame some of her animations because they had white boarders round them and it would look weird if the ratio changes through out the full animation.

For the fourth video we did I had to put all of the previous animations together to show all the different ways in which people can show their independence through appearance. We also did this to show how we can represent this in different medias such as traditional, digital and cut out paper animation.

For the Dazed logo I add a fractal noise effect in to the letters and then animated the fractal noise to make it look like flowing patterns going through the Dazed logo.

Also we had to do a behind the scenes video to show how we created are animations and are illustrations. I was in charge of making this video as well and used subtitles to explain the process and how I edited the animations. I also did this in After Effects using the time remanagement effect to make time lapses.

Collaborative Experience I found the whole collaborative brief experience a bit stressful because are communication wasn’t strong and I feel like if we spent more time in the idea generation stage we could of come up with a better idea. Also I found it stressful because of the amount of work I had to do and I feel like the work load wasn’t evened out properly.
