There are many paths to success at James Sprunt Community College. One of these paths is our agriculture programs. The agriculture programs can open many doors for your future and put you on the track to success in any agribusiness setting. Our program gives students a well-rounded education and a solid foundation to build upon. James Sprunt offers the following agricultural-based programs. - Agribusiness Technology - Applied Animal Science Technology - Swine Management Technology - Viticulture and Enology (Winemaking Technology) Classes are available face-to-face, in a hybrid format, and also completely online. Day and evening classes are offered each semester. James Sprunt’s agricultural-based programs give students hands-on experience in which they can learn about farming, irrigation, financial and management aspects of agribusiness, innovative strategies using technology for livestock and plants, learn sustainable practices, and more. James Sprunt’s Small Business Center also offers free seminars on the business of farming and growing your agribusiness, which are offered throughout the year. Whether you want to start your own farm, manage operations for a corporation, work at a nursery, or deal in wholesale and retail produce management, James Sprunt’s Agriculture programs can help you reach both your academic and professional goals, at an affordable price.


Sample Classes for Agriculture Programs AGR 139 Introduction to Sustainable Agriculture This course will provide students with a clear perspective on the principles, history and practices of sustainable agriculture in our local and global communities. Students will be introduced to the economic, environmental and social impacts of agriculture. Upon completion, students will be able to identify the principles of sustainable agriculture as they relate to basic production practices. AGR 160 Plant Science This course introduces the basic principles of botany that pertain to agricultural production. Emphasis is placed on the anatomy and physiology of flowering plants. Upon completion, students should be able to identify and explain plant systems. AGR 212 Farm Business Management This course introduces budgeting, farm analysis, production costs, business organizations, and general management principles. Topics include enterprise budgets, partial budgets, whole farm budgets, income analysis, and business organizations. Upon completion, student should be able to prepare and analyze a farm budget. AGR 214 Agricultural Marketing This course covers basic marketing principles for agricultural products. Topics include buying, selling, processing, standardizing, grading, storing, and marketing of agricultural commodities. Upon completion, students should be able to construct a marketing plan for an agricultural product. ANS 110 Animal Science This course introduces the livestock industry. Topics include nutrition, reproduction, production practices, diseases, meat processing, sustainable livestock production, and marketing. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of livestock production practices and the economic impact of livestock locally, regionally, state-wide, and internationally. ANS 140 Swine Production This course provides an introduction to the swine industry. Topics include basic skills for breeding, farrowing, nursery, environmental issues, and grower/finisher. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of swine production practices and the economic and environmental impact of the swine industry locally, regionally, state-wide, and internationally. ANS 143 Swine Health Management This course covers all aspects of swine disease and health management. Emphasis is placed on disease identification and treatment, biosecurity and herd health plans, routine swine health practices, and laws and regulations applying to swine. Upon completion, students should be able to identify and recommend treatment for major diseases, develop a herd health plan, and describe the appropriate uses for medications. AGRIBUSINESS TECHNOLOGY ASSOCIATE OF APPLIED SCIENCE Agribusiness Technology provides the entrepreneurial and technical skills necessary to manage a profitable, environmentally sound, community based small farm or business. Learn the fundamentals of agriculture, crop production, equipment, feed and supplies. Coursework includes learning agricultural specialization; technology and innovation of farming; business management: accounting, finance and marketing; and human resource management. Students will receive classroom instruction as well as hands-on training. Students will have opportunities to visit farms across North Carolina and learn from those currently working in the industry.

APPLIED ANIMAL SCIENCE ASSOCIATE OF APPLIED SCIENCE Applied Animal Science prepares students for careers in the production, processing, and distribution of livestock, swine, and poultry, and their products according to scientific principles essential to efficient and profitable operation. Coursework includes learning about production practices, basic animal science, animal health and nutrition, as well as the reproduction and management of livestock, swine, and poultry. Students will have opportunities to to work out in the field through work-based learning, visit farms, and work with animals throughout the program, in addition to receiving instruction in the classroom.

SWINE MANAGEMENT TECHNOLOGY ASSOCIATE OF APPLIED SCIENCE DIPLOMA | CERTIFICATE Swine Management Technology prepares students for careers in the production, processing, and distribution of livestock, with a specific focus on swine. Learn biological and chemical principles of production swine animals and the production and handling of meat and other products. Coursework includes animal sciences, range science, nutrition and food science, biochemistry, and animal health and safety. Students will receive classroom instruction as well as the opportunity to obtain hands-on experience. Students will visit hog farms located in Duplin County and other farms across North Carolina.

VITICULTURE AND ENOLOGY (WINEMAKING)

James Sprunt Community College has its own grape vineyard on campus! Students are able to receive hands-on training while learning about viticulture and enology (wine making). THE BUSINESS OF FARMING The Small Business Center at James Sprunt Community College offers opportunities for lifelong learning in the agriculture through The Business of Farming program. These seminars are offered for free to the general public throughout the year and teach you how to maximize profits and run your agribusiness more efficently.
