DESIGN YOUR FUTURE!

ENROLL IN THE ADVERTISING & GRAPHIC DESIGN PROGRAM AT JAMES SPRUNT! Joanna Lanier, a recent graduate of the Advertising and Graphic Design program at James Sprunt holds the poster she designed for the Annual Art Show and was picked as the official poster for the event. Joanna is currently freelancing and starting her own business, in which she hopes to design many logos, tshirts, and other items for clients across Eastern North Carolina.

Basic Law Enforcement Training begins January 27, 2020!

You must pass a background check, complete a BLET application and be sponsored by a law enforcement agency. Tuition is free but there is a cost for books and a uniform. Financial Aid is available for those who qualify to cover the cost of books.

Please email Eric Southerland for an application packet at esoutherland@jamessprunt.edu. Two recent graduates of the BLET program at James Sprunt are pictured above. Both have obtained employment in Duplin County. Mike Carney (left) serves at the Wallace Police Department and Ivan Sanchez (right) serves at the Warsaw Police Department.

That was the case for a few barber students who started classes this past Spring. Jared Williams, a barber student had just sat down when he looked over at the guy next to him, Cannon Herring. “It was the first day of school,” said Cannon, “Jared was just looking at me and I’m looking at him, and just out of nowhere, he says ‘you played that kid in that movie didn’t you,’ and I just started smiling.” That smiling gave Cannon’s secret away, to which Jared exclaimed out loud in front of the whole class, “YOU DID, YOU DID!”

“I wasn’t going to say anything about it,” explained Cannon, who is 25 years old. “But then I got exposed, and now I don’t think I’m ever going to hear the end of it.”

Cannon, also known by his stage name Cannon Jay, played the character of Bryson in the hit movie Not Easily Broken eleven years ago. The movie was based on a book originally written by the Bishop T.D. Jakes, who also had a small acting part in the film. “It was definitely a cool experience,” said Cannon. “I got a lucky break. Stuff like that doesn’t just happen. It was definitely surreal and crazy.” Cannon found himself in Hollywood after his family moved from Florida, as Cannon says, “on a whim.”His father had just recently got of the military and accepted a job working security detail for then Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. It was during that move to California that life got interesting for Cannon. “Some lady approached my Mom at the mall,

and said, ‘has anyone ever told you that your son could be in the movies?’ said Cannon. “I picked my Mom’s ear about it for weeks and weeks and weeks. Finally my parents let me go to this acting workshop camp, and I don’t know, for the time I fell in love with it and I really enjoyed it.” Cannon first appeared in a couple of local commercials, and was then featured on nationally broadcast commercials for Pizza Hut, Papa Johns, and a few toy companies. “Then I got a phone call to audition for Nickelodeon,” says Cannon. “It was for the TV show iCarly. I got a small role on the show and that is what got my foot in the door. I ended up getting to sing and dance and do all the videos for Kidz Bop… then I got a big role in a movie that my agent got me an audition for.” That movie took months to film and was a major production release for Sony.

“You get the whole Hollywood life,” said Cannon. “I had a trailer and I had one of those chairs with my name on it. I definitely had the full effect and I got to work along side some pretty big household names like Kevin Hart and Taraji P. Henson, who are really big right now.” Cannon says that if he could have done all big feature films all day, everyday, he would have definitely stuck with it. “It was hard. You go on twenty auditions for every one that you might get a call back,” says Cannon. “After the movie, I just decided not to do it anymore. I don’t know if I got nervous or intimidated or what…. I fell in love with skateboarding, surfing, and playing outside and not being an actor kid.” “The California journey was about four years in total. It was wild to say the least.” Cannon’s father took a job doing contract work in Afghanistan, so while his Dad went overseas, Cannon and the rest of his family moved to Ellijay, Georgia. “I went from Los Angeles County, California to Gilmer County, Georgia,” said Cannon. “We had 150 people in my high school, and before that, we had 150 people in the house next door to me. It was culture shock to say the least… but we never looked back.”

my Grandpa was killed, I was unpleasantly reminded of what I needed to do…. I joined the Marines and was stationed in Jacksonville, NC from 2013 until I got out in 2018.” Cannon served as a 4th generation Marine, saying “The Marine Corps ran in my family.” “I didn’t think I wanted to be anything other than a Marine, but then I changed my mind, and I was like, what do I want to do, what is my drive, where is my passion?” “That’s how I got to James Sprunt’s Barber School, I wanted to fall into a good lifelong profession and still be able to travel, do my thing, and not have like a 9-5 type of job… the cost of living here is low, and no matter what I do, I know I can probably get a job cutting hair.” Cannon has enjoyed his experience at James Sprunt so far, saying that “This has been great. I had never been to college before or experienced the college environment.” In five years Cannon says he hopes to have his own barber shop open in Wilmington so that he can be closer to his children, and in 10 years he hopes to branch out to Atlanta, and in 15 years, open up a shop in New York. “I want to have barber shops up and down the East Coast,” he said.

After completing high school in Georgia, Cannon moved to Florida, again for his Father’s work.

Cannon has also thought about going back to the industry that has made him famous, but in a behind-the-scenes capacity.

It was during that time that Cannon’s Grandfather was killed in Kabul, Afghanistan when the U.S. Embassy was attacked in 2012.

“My brother works in the film industry doing lighting and handling equipment in Atlanta,” said Cannon. “He told me about the film makers union for hairstylists, both men and women, barbers and cosmetologists, who’s sole job is just to be on the set 24/7 or however long they are filming… you film for six, seven, or eight months. A lot of the stylists are responsible for making the character look exactly like they are supposed to throughout the lapse of time.”

“It made me really sad, and it woke me up.” said Cannon. “It had been a year since I graduated from high school, and I hadn’t done anything yet. I wasn’t in college, I hadn’t talked to a recruiter, I was just co-existing.” “I knew that I wanted to be a Marine, so after

But all of that depends on his children. “It would definitely be cool to kind of circle right back around and be on the other side of things… there is a huge market for production hairstylists.” And you don’t have to move to California to do that, Cannon says that there are jobs in Wilmington, Southport and all up and down the East Coast where movies are being filmed and produced that are in need of barbers and cosmetologists. “To me barbering is really cool, it is just like super traditional and old school,” said Cannon. “Realistically I am exactly where I want to be and I am as happy as I can be right now.” Cannon says that he wasn’t sure if college life was going to be right for him and he wasn’t sure of what to expect. “I thought I would care about the age gap, being older than some of the students who are just out of high school, but being here in class, I realized it doesn’t matter,” Cannon said. “We are all here for the same exact purpose… and we can learn from each other, because our life experience is different.” As for advice he would give his fellow Marines, he says, “Don’t ever feel like it is ever too late to do anything. One of the best parts of being a Marine was the education that comes with it. Being able to use my GI Bill and to be able to pay my rent, my lights and my car and my gas and my tuition and everything for a couple of years of sacrifice was definitely worth it.” He goes on to say “Whether you did 20 years in the Marines or you did four years, you paid the sacrifice and one of those sacrifices is for us to have the GI Bill. Definitely use it. Pursue it. You literally paid for it. Don’t let it go to waste.” 7

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A WELDER: MEET AUSTIN BATTS by Cheryl Hemric, James Sprunt Community College “I have been to Virginia, Florida, Georgia, and West Virginia,” Austin said as he recalls all the places he has been to in the last year. “It is really cool to travel and make good money at the same time.”

enjoying working in the field and I am loving every minute of it.” With the shortage of a trained workforce, Austin sees first-hand the need that exists in this industry.

As he was speaking, he was getting ready for the next job site in Hopewell, Virginia near Richmond.

“There is a large demand for welders…” said Austin.

“I am going to be doing a weld on a tank vessel,” said Austin. “It is great to be able to see the final product, what you get from the weld…it’s a form of art.”

There is a shortage of trained professionals in areas such as welding, as well as other technical career fields, but for those that are qualified, the opportunities are endless. That is the case for Austin Batts, who completed a certificate in welding at James Sprunt Community College while still in high school. “I went straight to work,” said Austin, who is a combo pipe welder. “I graduated high school, and soon after, I left to go to West Virginia for a job making $27 an hour.”

“My parents are not crazy about the traveling part,” he adds. “But they said as long as it makes you happy, do it, and that’s what I’ve been doing.” Austin graduated from East Duplin High School in 2018, and was qualified to receive a full-ride scholarship to James Sprunt as a Presidential Scholar, but opted to enter the workforce as soon as he could. “I would love to get an associate degree eventually, maybe in Construction Management…. One day I would like to move up and become a supervisor, but for now I am

“Welding is a skilled trade…it’s not for everyone,” he added. “But when I took my first welding class, I knew it was for me.” It was that first spark that ignited a passion for welding in Austin’s life, and it has now set him on the journey of a lifetime. “It is a good career. You have to work hard, but you make a good living from it.” Earning a good living wage is what Austin has been able to achieve from taking just a few welding classes and earning a certificate. It just goes to show that you never know where one class at James Sprunt will lead you to next. As we often say here at the college, start here, go anywhere, and Austin Batts is living proof of that.

Austin ended up spending the entire summer of 2018 away from his home in Duplin County, working in West Virginia and also Virginia. His job continues to take him on the road to various job sites. For Austin, traveling is not just a part of the job, but it is something that he loves and enjoys. 17

“take it or leave it,” and after a few minutes of thinking he said “I have a dream Don, I’m not Martin Luther King, but I have a dream.” James accepted the challenge and fought Witherspoon, and after knocking him out at 2:12 in the first round, he became the WBA Heavyweight Champion of the World, and the Duplin County native found himself in the spotlight like never before. But, in addition to winning the world title and becoming an overnight celebrity, James also made history in another special way. “I was the first boxing champ that had a college degree,” said James.

WORLD BOXING CHAMP JAMES “BONECRUSHER” SMITH A KNOCKOUT JAMES SPRUNT ALUM by Cheryl Hemric, James Sprunt Community College You never know where life will lead you. That was the case for James Smith, who graduated from James Sprunt Community College in 1973 with an associate degree in business administration. He had no idea that in a few years after finishing college, that he would become known all over the world as the “Bonecrusher.” After completing his bachelor’s degree at Shaw University, James joined the Army and soon he found himself competing in boxing matches, winning the Army base heavyweight championship. “I used to rush in on an opponent and break his jaw or a rib, sometimes a nose,” said James. “Someone shouted the name “Bonecrusher” across the room. Soon the name stuck and I kept it.” Fast-forward to 1981. James found himself in his first professional fight that was broadcast all around the world. James lost that fight, but 20

it taught him a valuable lesson. He made a decision that day that he was in it to win, and win he would. “When you get knocked down, you just have to get back up,” said James. James decided he would fight anyone that would fight him. He won the next 14 fights in a row, with 12 of those being knockouts. Then with only a seven day notice, James found himself fighting for the WBA World Heavyweight Title against Tim Witherspoon, the same man that he lost to in his first fight. “When I won the title, I won it on a seven day notice,” said James. “Don King called me…He said Bone, I want to give you that World Title Fight… The fight is going to be in Madison Square Gardens in New York, it is going to be on HBO. You’ve got a chance to redeem yourself in front of the world.” James says that he was told that he could

James decided to come to James Sprunt because it was close to home, convenient, and he could save money. “I followed my fiancé and soon-to-be wife,” he said. “We were not quite ready for a 4-year college at that particular time. Community college gives a great opportunity to get transitioned from high school to college.” He adds with laughter “… and we liked the prices.” James also credits his parents with giving him the motivation to go to school and to complete his education. “It helped to have two loving parents. They taught us right from wrong. They corrected us when we made mistakes. They were our mentors. All six of my parent’s children graduated college. It is incredible to have parents who made sure that their children finished school.” Today you’ll find James working with his non-profit organization, Champion for Kids. “It’s a national mentoring program,” James said. Children from across the country get an opportunity to be mentored not only by James, but also by other Boxing Legends.

“I thought let’s get some of the other champions together to be a champion for the kids.” You’ll also find James working out the final details of his RV Mobile Museum which will feature memorabilia from those inducted into the Boxing Legends Hall of Fame. “Getting this RV mobile museum, we are going to be able to come back here [to James Sprunt], there and everywhere, and just let the fans hangout,” said James. “At the end of the year, we will do a big party in Myrtle Beach…so we go see the fans during the year, and at the end of the year, they come see us.”

getting started. If there’s something you want to do, do it. If you want to go back to school, make the decision to do it…I tell people to pray, ask God to give you direction.” “Being concerned and being nervous about anything new, that’s ok, but don’t let fear stop you. The definition of fear is false evidence

appearing real. A lot of times people are afraid of something that is not even a real thing to be afraid of.” He adds, “There is a champion inside of everyone waiting to be revealed… All things are possible for those who believe.”

It’s that rolling piece of history that will help to preserve the past of boxing for future generations to come. As for advice that James would give others, he says “The hardest part is sometimes just 21
