September 4, 2018 Dear Junior Achievement Friends and Supporters, It is our great privilege to share with you this report on our accomplishments for the 2017-2018 fiscal and academic year.

We are pleased to report that Junior Achievement of Mahoning Valley increased its reach by more than 5% this past year, serving 13,671 student across Ashtabula, Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull Counties. Students from all walks of life, in more than 95 schools and community programs received relevant, real-world experiences, empowering them to envision what’s possible if they work hard and dream big.

When young people understand how money, careers and business ownership work, they are poised to make intelligent decisions that will pave the way for their success in the years to come. Thanks to a dedicated team of more than 546 corporate and community-based volunteers, which brings our programs to life in classrooms and workplaces across the Mahoning Valley service areas, Junior Achievement turns “I can’t” into “I can”, helping students realize their full and boundless potential.

Equipping young people with the skills they will need to succeed in life also creates a vital talent pipeline of financially literate and entrepreneurial young people ready to engage in their careers and challenges of tomorrow. They will be better positioned to realize their personal and financial goals. Like many of our JA alumni, they will also realize the advantages of contributing to their communities as productive and engaged citizens.

This impact report (the full report can be viewed at warren-youngstown.ja.org) demonstrates the many benefits of the Junior Achievement model. From teachers and students, to businesses and the economy as a whole, everyone wins when Junior Achievement is part of the K-12 educational experience.

Junior Achievement of Mahoning Valley reached 13,671 students in 631 classrooms during the 2017-2018 school year. Over 546 volunteers gave 79,820 contact hours of their time and talents to work with the young people in our community. These passionate volunteers, investors, educators, and local leaders are individuals who care enough to make a difference in a child’s life through the enrichment with the JA experience. For many children, experiencing JA is seeing an activity and visualizing a future where their dreams can become reality.

We would like to thank all of our donors, volunteers, educators, board of directors and special event participants for helping to make our program year a success. We are grateful for the volunteers who devoted time and resources out of their busy work schedules to make a connection from the business world to the classroom. JA Company Program During the 2017-2018 school year, Boardman High School, Canfield High School, Choffin Career and Technical Center, and Poland Seminary High School participated in the JA Company Program.

Upon completion, students can identify the key elements of organizing and operating a business and to consider creating their own start-up business, while empowering them to solve problems and address local needs through the entrepreneurial spirit.

Mentors from the local business community employed a variety of hands-on activities and technological supplements to challenge students to use innovative thinking.

JA Be Entrepreneurial During the 2017-2018 school year, 102 students at Beaver Local High School and Canfield High School participated in the JA Be Entrepreneurial Program, which introduces students to the essential elements of a practical business plan and then challenges them to start an entrepreneurial venture while still in high school.

Students learned about advertising, competitive advantages, financing, marketing, and product development. JA Be Entrepreneurial is designed to support the skills and competencies identified by the Partnership for 21st Century Skills.

The program concludes with a pitch competition where the students show prototypes of their product.

JA Ethics Day November 30, 2017 local business leaders visited 16 area classrooms, reaching 325 students, during this one day event. Community leaders brought the message of the importance of doing what is legal and right even when it means losing a business deal, or acting on information that can provide great financial gain. Students had the opportunity to practice making ethical choices when presented with dilemmas.

2018 JA Titan Business Challenge YSU Williamson College of Business Administration hosted the 9th annual JA Titan Business Challenge on March 8th for Junior Achievement of Mahoning Valley. A total of 70 students (23 teams) from 8 high schools participated. Each team, consisting of 3 students, became the CEO of a Holo-Generator company with total control of company operations. The teams worked with a local business mentor who provided insight into personal career and business development as well as guidance for decision making processes applicable to the JA Titan game strategy. Student teams competed against each other by analyzing market conditions over a series of quarters applying information under time pressure to interpret data and make decisions for their "virtual company". Business 2020 On November 7th, 2017, seventeen high schools from Keynote Speaker: Simon Arias Owner & Founder of Simon Arias Agencies Ashtabula, Columbiana, Mahoning, and Trumbull

counties attended Business 2020 at Youngstown State University. Business 2020, started by Youngstown State University Williamson College of Business Administration in conjunction with Junior Achievement of Mahoning Valley, hosted 418 high school students. They participated in breakout sessions about careers in business, financial literacy, and skill assessment to prepare for the job market. Twenty-nine leaders from various segments of academia and business offered insight and information during the panel sessions.

JA Get Smart About Credit Day On October 19th, 23 classes of students from area high schools across Mahoning and Trumbull County took part in a financial education program in conjunction with Junior Achievement of Mahoning Valley, Inc., and Chemical Bank.

This year’s “Get Smart about Credit Day” featured the pre-developed JA Personal Finance lesson, “Credit Choices”.

This is the 8th year for the one-day program that educated 462 students about the importance of credit and how to use it wisely.

The lesson included not only how to manage a credit card, but also how to protect personal financial information and recognize the signs of overspending. Students discussed credit myths and facts as well as the different types of credit including student loans and co-loans.

Financial Starting Points Seminar The Associated School Employees Credit Union (ASECU), Junior Achievement of Mahoning Valley (JAMV), and Youngstown State University Williamson College of Business Administration (WCBA) sponsored the tenth annual Financial Starting Points Seminar on February 13, 2018 at YSUâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Kilcawley Center.

State Senator, Joe Schiavoni, opened the event as the keynote speaker. JA Volunteer Miss Ohio USA, Deneen Penn assisted with the closing ceremony.

200 high school students and educators from ten area schools received education and hands-on experience in three critical areas of financial literacy including managing credit, investing in their future, and building a personal budget.

JA Inspire Kent State University Trumbull On December 15, 2017, 258 seventh grade students took part in the first JA Inspire program at Kent State University Trumbull.

The day long event featured three break-out sessions featuring lessons from JA It’s My Future about building a personal brand, career planning, and getting and keeping a job.

Through interviews, self-reflection, and creation of a personal logo, students explored the importance of building a positive personal brand for the future, starting in middle school. The next session explored how to use life experiences to develop work skills to map a path to employment goals. The third session focused on the difference between technical and soft skills and the role their personal behavior has on their ability to succeed in a job.

Young Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Mentorship Program The Young Women's Mentorship Program through United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley paired 53 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students with professional female mentors.

The students from Boardman Center Intermediate School took part in JA Economics for Success, and the students from Taft and Williamson Elementary Schools had the JA More than Money program.

The most important part of the initiative is that the students participate in the sessions with their mentors who volunteer weekly. This allows the two to form a positive relationship that often extends beyond the program.

JA Economics for Success lays bare for students the heart of a successful economic life: choosing the right career and managing money properly. The program also expands their knowledge of personal finance including smart budgeting, wise credit use, and minimizing financial risk so they can apply strong financial management skills regardless of their income.

Teach Children to Save Financial Literacy Month 15 Chemical Bank volunteers gave presentations to 421 fourth graders in 19 different classrooms to teach them specifically about saving money.

The classes took place throughout April and May 2018. Volunteers taught the â&#x20AC;&#x153;My Bank Accountâ&#x20AC;? lesson from the JA Our City program, which introduces the importance of economic exchange, and how people and businesses in cities manage their money.

Students learned how to manage a personal bank account through the interactive Piggy Bank Savings Game that provides children with real-world experiences such as saving money for future purchases and paying bills. The program teaches concepts about banking, deposits, interest, savings accounts, transactions, and withdrawals.

AT&T Job Shadow On March 13th and 27th, 54 students from Niles McKinley High School participated in an AT&T Job Shadow workshop at the Boardman Call Center. On July 17th, 30 students from the Boys and Girls Club of Youngstown attended day-long workshop.

The program began with a breakfast and welcoming ceremony, after which the groups had four different breakout sessions, learning about how to write resumes, going on job interviews, a safety lesson about cell phone usage, and then a visit to learn about the cell tower engineering.

Working together during the 2017-2018 school year Junior Achievement and AT&T impacted more than 7,000 students nationwide. The collaboration is part of AT&T Aspire, the company’s signature philanthropic initiative to create connections that drive innovation in education. Together, these connections are helping students and communities across America.

The day wrapped up with lunch provided by DiBello’s Subs followed by a “Family Feud” style review of the sessions.

The AT&T program speaker taught me a lot. You could tell he had a lot of real experience and knew what he was talking about.

This program also gave me real world experience on how to prepare for a job interview. ~Niles McKinley student The events today were wonderful. 2018 Great American Bowl-A-Thon Our 2018 Bowl-A-Thon season has come to an end. We had two Great American Bowl-a-Thons this year with 226 bowlers participating in two bowling events in February and May - all to raise money for Junior Achievement of Mahoning Valleyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mission to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy. In addition to being a fun-filled event for co-workers, friends and family, the event was a successful fundraiser for our organization. We are proud to announce that the 2018 Great American Bowl-A-Thon raised over $23,000 for Junior Achievement of Mahoning Valley.

JA in a Day Beaver Elementary School On October 20, 2017, 684 students in 30 classes, kindergarten through fourth grade, received a day of Junior Achievement programming. Volunteers from the community donated their time to come into the classrooms to teach the JA Ourselves, JA Our Families, JA Our Community, JA Our City and JA Our Region programs. 

JA Ourselves uses storybook characters in read-aloud and hands-on activities to introduce the role people play in an economy. Through engaging, volunteer-led activities, young students learn about individual choices, money, the importance saving and giving, and the value of work.

JA Our Families explains how family members' jobs and businesses contribute to the well-being of the family and of the community. The program introduces the concept of needs and wants and explores the ways families plan for and acquire goods and services. Students analyze their own skills to determine ways they can support their families.



JA Our Community uses posters and games to offer practical information about businesses and the many jobs those businesses offer in a community. Students explore production methods through a simulation game, and they learn about taxes, decision making, and how money flows in an economy.



JA Our City, students learn the characteristics of cities, the importance of economic exchange, and how people and businesses in cities manage their money. Students also apply money-management strategies to personal and business accounts.



JA Our Region, students examine regional and state resources and supply chains, and they solve problems by weighing risks and potential rewards. Junior Achievement classroom volunteers show how resources are combined to create goods and services.

JA in a Day Canfield Village Middle School On May 29th, every student in grades seven and eight received Junior Achievement programming at Canfield Village Middle School.

JA in a Day Dobbins Elementary School On May 16th, 271 3rd and 4th grade students at Dobbins Elementary School in Poland spent the day learning about financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship. Volunteers from the community donated their time to come into the classrooms to teach the JA Our City program and JA Our Region program.

In JA Our City, students learned the characteristics of cities, the importance of economic exchange, and how people and businesses in cities manage their money. Students also applied money-management strategies to personal and business accounts.

In JA Our Region, students examined regional and state resources and supply chains, and they solved problems by weighing risks and potential rewards. Junior Achievement classroom volunteers showed how resources are combined to create goods and services.

JA in a Day East Palestine Middle School On May 18, 2018 every student in grades five, six, seven and eight had Junior Achievement programming at East Palestine Middle School. 







78 fifth graders received JA Our Nation, where students were provided with practical information about the nation's free market system and how it serves as an economic engine for businesses and careers.

72 sixth graders received JA Global Marketplace, where students learned to provide practical information about the key aspects of the global economy, what makes world trade work, and how trade affects students' daily lives.

75 seventh graders received JA It’s My Future, where students were provided practical information about preparing for the working world. Students explored potential careers, discovered the four factors to consider in choosing a career, and recognized basic job-hunting tools.

84 eighth graders received JA Economics for Success, a program that lays bare for students the heart of a successful economic life: choosing the right career and managing money properly. Volunteer mentors from the community and high school educators donated their time to visit the classrooms and teach the JA programs.

JA in a Day Girard Junior High School On May 18th, 266 7th and 8th grade students at Girard Junior High School spent the day learning about financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship. Volunteers from the community donated their time to come into the classrooms to teach the JA It’s My Future program and JA Economics for Success program.

JA It’s My Future provides practical information about preparing for the working world. Students learn about career clusters, high-growth jobs, career planning, and creating a personal brand. And, through a scavenger hunt, they are introduced to the basic aspects of job hunting.

JA Economics for Success gives students the information needed to build strong personal finances, a cornerstone to a happy, secure life. Students learn the importance of exploring career options based on their skills, interests, and values. They also learn about spending money within a budget; saving and investing wisely; and using credit cautiously.

JA in a Day Lakeview Elementary School On May 4, 2018, six Cortland Bank colleagues presented the Junior Achievement JA Our City program to a total of 125 third grade students at Lakeview Elementary School in Cortland, Ohio. Junior Achievement’s third grade program, JA Our City, introduces students to financial literacy and learning objectives for social studies, including the characteristics of cities, the importance of economic exchange, and how people and businesses in cities manage their money.

Students apply money-management strategies to personal and business accounts.

Following participation in the program, students will be able to: 

Provide practical information about the zones found within a city.



Examine the importance of money to a city, why people pay taxes, and how people use different methods to pay for goods and services.

Describe the contributions of financial institutions to a city and how they help businesses and people achieve their economic goals.

Develop an understanding that entrepreneurs promote a healthy economy within a city.





JA in a Day Poland Middle School On December 15, 2017, 148 seventh grade students received Junior Achievement programming at Poland Middle School.

JA Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s My Future provides practical information about preparing for the working world.

Through interviews, self-reflection, and creation of a personal logo, students explored the importance of building a positive personal brand for the future, starting in middle school.

The sessions taught them the difference between technical and soft skills, and they recognized the impact that their personal behavior has on their ability to succeed in a job.

Additionally, students explored potential careers, discovered how to plan for a job, and learned how to keep it.

JA in a Day Poland Union Elementary On June 4, 2018, 132 first grade students at Poland Union Elementary School in Poland spent the day learning about financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship. Volunteers from IGS Energy, Gasser Chair, and HBK CPAs & Consultants donated their time to come into the classrooms to teach the JA Our Families Program.

JA Our Families introduces students to entrepreneurship and learning objectives for first grade social studies, including families, neighborhoods, money, and needs and wants.

I loved that the lesson I was teaching allowed students to not only learn about needs, wants, and money, but also participate and share their stories about things that they want. JA in a Day Southeast Elementary On May 18th, 336 students at Southeast Elementary School in Salem spent the day learning about financial literacy, workreadiness, and entrepreneurship. Volunteers from the community and Kent State University’s Rural Scholars Program donated their time to come into the classrooms to teach the JA Our Nation and JA Economics for Success programs. These programs introduced the students to the concepts of natural, human, and capital resources, job skills and STEM, job clusters and industries, global needs, entrepreneurship, free enterprise, business, goals, careers, budgeting, credit and debit cards, and needs and wants.

“I think JA was good because it made learning fun, in ways like activities or games. It was also very interesting. My favorite activity was the insurance bingo. It helped you learn, about how insurance is important, and how it helps you. I learned about the difference between credit and debit cards.

Junior Achievement of Ashtabula County reached 2,471 students in 109 classrooms during the 2017-2018 school year. 78 volunteers gave 15,258 contact hours of their time and talents to work with the young people in our community. These passionate volunteers, investors, educators, and local leaders are individuals who care enough to make a difference in a childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life through the enrichment with the JA experience. For many children, experiencing JA is seeing an activity and visualizing a future where their dreams can become reality.

We would like to thank all of our donors, volunteers, educators, board of directors and special event participants for helping to make our program year a success! We are grateful for the volunteers who devoted time and resources out of their busy work schedules to make a connection from the business world to the classroom. Designer Bag Bingo: Ashtabula Junior Achievement of Ashtabula County held its first Designer Bag Bingo fundraiser at Saybrook Banquet Centre on May 11th. Over 200 people purchased tickets to this event to raise money for Junior Achievementâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mission to empower young people to own their economic success. In addition to being a fun-filled event for co-workers, friends and family, the event was a successful fundraiser. We are happy to announce that this event raised $20,000 for JA! 2018 JA Titan Business Challenge Kent State University at Ashtabula hosted the 2nd annual JA Titan Business Challenge on March 22nd for Junior Achievement of Ashtabula County. A total of 40 students (14 teams) from 6 high schools participated. Each team, consisting of 3 students, became the CEO of a Holo-Generator company with total control of company operations. The teams worked with a local business mentor who provided insight into personal career and business development as well as guidance for decision making processes applicable to the JA Titan game strategy. Student teams competed against each other by analyzing market conditions over a series of quarters applying information under time pressure to interpret data and make decisions for their "virtual company". The winners each received a scholarship. Thank you to all of our sponsors, mentors, educators, students, and volunteers for making this year’s event a huge success!
