ISSUE 1 :: SUSTAINABILITY
March 7: REIMAGINE BUILDINGS ‘24 Online Event
24 hours of knowledge, connections & inspiration to change the world. Unveiling a new building every hour!
March 21: CLIMATE CHANGEVIEWS FROM THE GLOBAL SOUTH Online Event
The panel is part of an ongoing series organized by the India China institute on emerging political, technological, and economic arrangements, it seeks to broaden and make more representative differing ways of understanding and addressing climate change.
February 21 - April 30: SUSTAIN-ART: Building a Sustainable Future through Architecture and Arts in Peccioli
Long Island University: Education Hall Gallery
The collaboration between the School of Architecture and Design at the NYIT and the town of Peccioli, Italy, represents the broader discourse on sustainable urban development, circular economies, and the transformative role of arts and architecture in creating inclusive communities.
March 4 - March 28: JIMENEZ LAI: HALL OF MONSTERS
The Cooper Union: Third Floor Hallway Gallery
This exhibit presents a group of five archetypal monsters —that visiting faculty member Jimenez Lai has been developing in his practice in recent months. The project is inspired, in part, by John Hejduk’s seminal piece, Victims (1984)!
October 2, 2023–March 23, 2024: GENERATION PROXIMA Center for Architecture
This exhibit explores the emerging Environmental Practices in Portuguese Architecture, through materiality.

WHAT’S NEW?
WHY DO WE CARE?
COPENHILL |
Copenhagen, Denmark
WHO: Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG)
WHAT: Energy Plant and Urban Recreation Center
WHEN: 2019
Waste-to-energy plant with an urban recreation center + environmental education hub! It’s turning infrastructure into an archtectural landmark. During the summer months, the rooftop activity park will provide visitors with hiking trails, playgrounds, fitness structures, trail running, climbing walls, and views across the city. In the winter, the park will be joined by a over 1,640 feet (500 meters) of ski slopes!
HORA
POPULUS HOTEL | Denver, Colorado
WHO: Studio GANG
WHAT: First carbon positive hotel in the USA
WHEN: Summer 2024
Combining eco-progressive construction and carefully selecting materials such as lowcarbon concrete mixes + high-recycled content materials. It collaborates with local agriculture and forest partners to sequester more carbon than the building emits through its lifecycle. The lack of on-site parking attempts to change the way we travel, encouraging public transport and promoting a larger goal of sustainable living.
VERTIKALE | Tirana, Albania
WHO: OODA
WHAT: Residential skyscraper, 13 staggered cubes
WHEN: Spring 2024
“Hora” meaning ‘homeland’ or ‘capital’ in Albanian, this building is mixed-used vertically arranged residential units set in a large city + featuring a diverse range of amenities. Each cube is defined by a distinct visual identity, inspired by local vernacular and materials. A response to the city’s swift expansion and modernization, the project extends its reach to engage the local community, by creating a new urban centrality with cohesive pedestrian connectivity.
WHAT’S NEXT? WHO WON?
HOUSE OF THE FUTURE COMPETITION: Spring 2023
WHAT: To design a template for a new-age home for Emiratis in Dubai. Looked for sustainable and innovative projects suited to the needs for a typical Emirati family. Respond to a standard development plot in Dubai, max 450 square meters. WINNER: Al Dara: Harnessing Heritage for a Sustainable Future WHATS COOL: Wind catchers are used to ventilate and cool the spaces. Curtains on the wind catchers mechanically react by pressure when wind direction reverses from day to night, and let wind through the shaft. This prevents hot air exhaust to the exterior. Uses cool air density to push downwards the lighter warm air in convection process thus re-injecting water to the underground. Reduces CO2 emissions and helps to decrease UAE’s annual loss in underground water table.
MICHAEL GREEN | Architect
Based in British Columbia, Canada, Michael Green is paving the way for sustainable architecture with his Wood Innovation Design Centre Project. This 4820 sq. meter design, completed in 2014, uses a simple technique to reduce it’s environmental impact : it is made of mass timber.
The WIDC is the world’s tallest modern all-timber office building at 97 feet tall, showcasing the potential for building midand high-rise structures using mass timber. This challenges the conventional perception that tall buildings must be made from steel or concrete, offering a sustainable alternative using renewable and lower impact structural material.
The project team conducted extensive engineering research and testing to ensure the safety and validity of mass timber construction techniques leading to the wider adoption of mass timber construction as a standard and safe practice.
What has Michael Green achieved that is diferent from other architects? Although seemingly straightforward, the building’s structural simplicity can be easily replicated, making it a fundamental choice to inspire architects, engineers, and private developers to recognize the value of mass timber design as a sustainable alternative to traditional materials.
New Tech | BIOPHILIC DESIGN
Biophilic Design is an upcoming design philosophy that seeks to create buildings and spaces that connect people with nature. It uses natural elements, materials, and light to enhance well-being and productivity of occupants.
Some of it’s key features include: Nature in Space: Incorporating natural elements like plants, water features, and materials like wood and stone. Natural Shapes & Forms: Utilizing curves, arches, and irregular shapes in design.
Natural Patterns & Textures: Uses wood grain, stone textures, and leaf patterns.
Light & Shadow: Using natural light and shadow for depth and dimension. Natural Colors: Employing earth tones, greens, and blues for a calming environment.
Views of Nature: Incorporating views of landscapes and gardens.
Connection to Nature: Eliciting a sense of the natural world through materials, textures, and design elements.
Some great examples of this include the Eden Project in Cornwall, England by Nicholas Grimshaw, the Jewel Changi Airport in Singapore by Safdie Architects and Bosco Verticale by Boeri Studio in Milan, Italy!
