The Cambridge Town & Gown Divide manifests itself as many socio-economic factors including a British record in life expectancy disparity (76-87 years).

My thesis project created urban strategies and architectural interventions to reduce this divide, ending in the North East Cambridge Civic & Cultural Centre (page 2).

Architectural storytelling was used to emphasise the impacts of the divide. The collegiate fairytale that Cambridge is famous for veils an extremely disparate city, represented in Act of the ‘King of Hearts’ architectural fairytale, pictured above. Below, the relationship between Cambridge College owned land and life expectancy is shown.

At urban scale, the North East Cambridge Masterplan stitches together the two most polarising Cambridge areas: King’s Hedges and the North Cambridge Science Park (shown above).

The North East Cambridge Civic & Cultural Centre is one of the focal interventions in this masterplan.

Cambridge Council land

The North East Cambridge Civic & Cultural Centre is the final intervention in the masterplan and its design is inspired by archaeological dig sites and the studio worked in at Saint Martins. Classrooms, meeting rooms and spaces for study float above various library zones that aim to engage different groups of people in their personal pursuits and exchange of knowledge.

The four pavilions modelled below represent a portion of the conceptual form finding conducted during the design of the cultural centre. Parametric design and experiments into structural density informed the final design and programme of the centre.
