My second year provided an opportunity to refine my skills and start to develop an understanding of Architecture. The Later Living project introduced us to the different stages in the design process. We started this project with a site visit, where the importance of site analysis became clear. Through sketching, data gathering and research we were able to present a wide range of information to begin our own adaptation of the brief.

Initial Sketches and SketchUp Models
Developing concept sketches and models created the visual aid required to visualise the building in context while being able to imagine the experience through and around the building. This is an invaluable tool when presenting concepts to the client.

I started to look at public and private spaces in the building. Diagramming my thoughts into drawings establishing a pattern that could later be applied in my design.
This project was an opportunity to explore circulation within a building and how the different materials, levels and views can create a positive user experience.

EXHIBITION
In this project I focused on creating large open spaces within the building that offered great views and allowed for light to pass through the building. I attempted to provide something new and exciting that would catch people’s attention.

Creating a Manifesto and Developing Brief
In response to the chosen brief of ‘Performance’, I was instantly connected with the idea of designing a venue that would be a homage to what Bristol is known for, and widely appreciated for, in the world of performance and art: the underground scene. This project allowed me to explore my interests both within architecture and outside. It offered a great opportunity for me to get excited and passionate about the project.

Site Analysis
A lot of my initial inspiration came from my original site visit. Approaching the site from all access points provided a better understanding of how the user would experience the site. This approach was one I explored thoroughly in my dissertation and is an exercise I intend to continue in future projects.
Due to the nature of my project I felt it was necessary to capture the site’s atmosphere at night time through art. These drawings helped inform the idea and theme of what my building could achieve, as well as creating an idea of the mood and experience of the site. It formed a starting point for the beginning stages of the interior design.

3rd Year Final Project
Concept Sketching
From analysis of the site (a peninsular on the Cumberland Basin, with views of the Suspension Bridge), I started to draw inspiration from the forms and shapes. I drew attention to the interesting boulders that surrounded the site and sketched massing ideas for how the initial shape of my building could be formed.
I considered the linear features of the site and how it somehow pointed to the bridge. This organic material when sketched seemed to resemble soundwaves in electronic music, which sparked a response through sketching form from the waves –thus relating back to the brief.
8 Jake Bone Portfolio 2023
3rd Year Final Project
Form Finding
Form finding helped establish a more direct shape from my initial ideas. The lineal features started to show through model making and how these shapes could maximise the views created on site and provide a back drop for the concept of my building.
The surrounding site inspired a variety of shapes that suggested that the building could slot into the landscape with aspects of the design potentially mimicking its aesthetic form.
Model making helped me understand the interior experience: how the club level of the building would be viewed from the balconies and how at night the bridge would be framed above the artist. Through quick models I was able to get a real feel for the atmosphere and mood of the space.

General Arrangement Plans
I wanted the plans for this project to resemble the brutalist style that my building represents. This was achieved through layering on Adobe Photoshop. This is a skill I strengthened throughout my third year at university.

Suspended ceiling provides similar technology, insulated panels meet the partition wall sealed with acoustic sealant.
Aim:
This internal wall build up supports the architectural ambition of the building by creating an acoustically insulated studio that is a detached and quiet space for its users to feel enclosed within the room and focus on production. The choice of timber finished flooring and panelling contrasts the rest of the building but is set out to provide an organic setting within the production space as well as creating a new atmosphere where productivity can surge. The suspended flooring sat upon padded cradles and ceiling provides a barrier so that sound stays within the room. The multilayers are offset and sealed with acoustic caulk so that sound can’t escape or enter the space.
My approach to the technical side of the project was something I focused on throughout my third year. Considering the structure throughout helped me later in the project when it came to detailing.

Grace Community Church, Bedford (CPL)
The main project I worked on at CPL Architects (Eastbourne) was a large master plan in Bedford, which consisted of a community centre and housing development. While most of my work was producing the site model and 3D renders for the application, I was also tasked with drawing up elevations, site sections and parameter plans. For these I drew up the linework in AutoCad and then stylised it in Photoshop.

Following on from the external works stair drawings, I was tasked with designing the reception desk. I was given a lot of creative freedom and used the Fibonacci sequence as a source for inspiration. I then drew up plans, sections and elevations of the outcome with detail relating to structure.

Blakes Hotel Renovation (TA Greig)
My current position is with architect engineers TA Greig (TAG) in London.
My primary role in TAG’s redevelopment of Blake’s, a boutique hotel in Kensington, is drawing the general arrangement plans, elevations and sections, and issuing these drawings to members of the team. It has allowed me to understand the different stages in a project, keeping in touch with the RIBA plan of works. I have developed my technical understanding and how to keep a good relationship with others, whether it be architects, contractors or interior designers.
The task of surveying, drawing and issuing packages all while being on site has offered a great insight as to how a building works. This experience in a professional environment has meant that I have dealt with on-thespot questions while presenting ideas and queries to the team, with great attention to detail.
I have created numerous iterations of the same plans over the months, whether to add new features or refine for the use of different contractors. This has given me a deeper understanding of how a real-world project develops, as well as honing my Autocad & surveying skills.
