Steel Cylinder Liners Are Better Than Aluminum
When you see the steel at first it seems like unsuitable material for making cylinder liner. The density of steel is almost three times of aluminum and it has low thermal conductivity. Manufacturers of cylinder liner India use steel for liners because it can provide the lowest total engine mass, despite of its density. Its strength and stiffness are the major advantages and this is why manufacturers pick steel over aluminum for constructing cylinder liners. Aluminum cylinder liners are famous because they conduct heat well and the coefficient of expansion between the piston and liner can be closer to ideal than with a steel liner. Unlike steel, it has low allowable stresses, and so the material’s thickness increases to keep stress in the limits. This implies that the material and the water jacket surrounding it are bigger, and the bore centers are apart than in the case of steel. This makes engine block heavier, and the crankshaft is heavier and longer. Regardless of the light weight structure of the aluminum cylinder liners as compared to steel, the new engine design is heavier.
