Mrs. Claus was cooking breakfast when Santa came home from his long night of delivering Christmas presents. Every year, she and the elves would wait to hear all about Santa’s adventures.

“Merry Christmas, my dear!” exclaimed Santa as he walked in the door shaking off snow and kicking off his boots.
“Merry Christmas to you, too! I can’t wait to hear about your night!” said Mrs. Claus.
“Well, before I tell you about it, I want you to know that I tore another suit…”
Mrs. Claus let out a sigh and said “Again? You have had some mishaps with suits over the years! And the stories you tell about the ruined suits always give me a laugh.”

Mrs. Claus couldn’t help but remember a few of Santa’s stories. “Oh, Santa! Do you remember the lion sanctuary? When your curiosity made your night more interesting…”

Santa replied “Yes, I remember it was such a wonderful family in South Africa that lived there. I just got too close to the fence. I just wanted to pet the lion’s paw.” Mrs. Claus gave him a knowing look. Santa started to giggle and said, “But the look on your face when you saw the claw rips in my suit that year was priceless!!”
Mrs. Claus looked at Santa and said, “I think your curiosity has gotten you in some pretty tricky situations – remember the polar bear cubs in Greenland?”

Santa couldn’t help but hang his head while snickering at the same time.
“That mama polar bear just HAD to wake up at the very moment I decided to peek into her den. I just wanted to see her new cubs, but she chased me back out onto the ice.

I bet I looked ridiculous slipping and tripping on the ice. Just before I fell into the icy water, one leg went forward, and one went backward, and I split my pants and tore yet another suit.”

“I can’t stop imagining you in these situations! It makes my belly hurt laughing at these stories… but one of my favorites was the stuck moose in Maine!”
Santa thought for a minute trying to remember.
“I was just trying to help that Moose get untangled from the children’s swing set. I couldn’t leave him there, I had to help! I wish I spoke ‘moose’, so he would have known I was there to help. I did free him eventually, but not before I tore another suit!”

Santa reached over and held Mrs. Claus’ hand.
They both smiled at all the memories.

Santa looked at his wife and asked, “What are you going to do with all these suits?
Why are you saving them?”
With a little gleam in her eyes, Mrs. Claus replied, “Well, that is something I wanted to talk to you about.
Do you remember the letter we received years ago?
And the child asked what we do with worn out or ruined suits?”
Santa thought for a minute and said “Yes, I do.”

Mrs. Claus could barely contain her excitement and exclaimed, “That letter has been on my mind for years! I know we don’t usually exchange presents, but this is something special for you from me!”

Santa unwrapped his gift and pulled out the most festive and beautiful Christmas quilt he had ever seen. He was overwhelmed with joy. He knew that Mrs. Claus had been working hard on a project and he was deeply touched that she had made him a gift.
Mrs. Claus watched his face for a reaction. She really wanted him to love his gift.
“I made you a Santa Suit Quilt! I cut a piece from one of your ruined suits and it’s part of the quilt. See?” as she pointed to the beautiful velvet patch.

Mrs. Claus continued to explain to Santa how this project started.

“I had the idea when I walked into the teddy bear sewing area of the workshop. In the corner, some of the elves were working on blankets and quilts for dolls and teddy bears.
Above the elves on the wall was a plaque that stated, ‘One who sleeps under a quilt is covered with love’ and, of course, I wanted a special quilt for you. Then I walked by my pile of ruined suits… and the idea struck me!”

Santa, still holding and hugging the quilt, beamed at her, “Thank you so much. This is a wonderful gift.
Since you used my suits, it will have elfin magic, right?”

Mrs. Claus looked at him and said,
“It was made with love and with even one square of your Santa suit, it has Christmas magic! It’s everything Christmas is about… love and magic.”

That night, Santa fell asleep by the fire with his quilt. He slept so well that the next morning, he had slept in much later than usual.

Now most people think that as soon as Christmas is over, Santa goes on vacation.

But, it is simply not true. Santa enjoys making rounds again to check on the children. He loves to see them enjoying their gifts. It’s actually one of his favorite things to do.
This particular night, he stopped by a home and noticed a child asleep on the sofa, shivering slightly from the chilly air.

Of course, he thought she needed a blanket, so he grabbed his new quilt from the sleigh, used a little of his magic to soundlessly enter the room and covered her.
He quickly left her a note explaining that he had left her his Santa Suit quilt and how it is filled with love and a bit of Christmas magic.
When Santa returned to the North Pole, he nervously explained to Mrs. Claus why he had given away his lovely quilt and hoped she would make him another.
With a knowing smile she said, “I thought this might happen.”
Remembering the child he had just left, he proclaimed, “I want every child to be wrapped up snug in a quilt made with love and a bit of magic…after all, that is what Christmas is all about!”

Mrs. Claus ran to him and gave him a big hug.

“After collecting all of your ruined suits for over 400 years, we are ready to start immediately!”
Santa couldn’t help laughing his most jolly laugh,
“By the way, on my way home, I did snag my coat on a sticker bush… and tore my suit.”

Santa will be delivering quilts to boys and girls throughout the Christmas season. Each quilt will be made with love and contain a patch from one of Santa’s ruined suits.
