Grounded Community is an education, community garden and food collection charity based in Boscombe, Bournemouth. Their mission is to “educate, share and grow” (Grounded Community 2022) to connect the community of Boscombe together through nature and community aid.
LOCAL CHARITY TO OPEN SUMMER COOKING AND COMMUNITY MEAL PROGRAMS
Over the summer holidays, a series of weekly workshops designed to teach food sustainability and help provide meals for families is to be hosted by Grounded Community as part of their Feed Our Community project in Boscombe, Bournemouth.
Food insecurity has been a county-wide problem, with Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole being reported to be the third-highest area for food insecurity in the country in 2021. Over 23.8% of families were found to struggle to afford food. Most of these families rely on charity projects such as Fee Our Community to gain access to enough food to feed their families.
The Boscombe Community Fridge project was set up in 2017, but amidst the food insecurity crisis caused by Covid-19, the project was adopted by the Grounded Community charity. From the fridge in Boscombe library, to food distribution to hostels, care homes, homeless shelters and schools, the project has been supporting the local community with over 50 tons of food per year. Following the UN’s Zero Hunger Challenge, Grounded strives towards creating a self-sustaining community where there is 100% access to nutritious food all year round using sustainable food systems that create low food waste in the process.
These two projects are working collaboratively towards the charity’s goal of ‘community efficiency’. With over 50% of global food being wasted, they aim to put such foods to good use by feeding the Boscombe community. The two-part project aims to alleviate child hunger through the summer holidays, whilst providing the community with the skills necessary to create meals using food that would otherwise become waste. The workshops are set to include a wide range of inclusive skills throughout their month-long period, from using kitchen scraps to make soup broths, to fruit preserves with foraged plants. The result of these workshops will then be included in community meals and food parcels for low-income families. The project will be a first for the charity, who have yet to run any soup kitchens or community meals, but they hope this will become a yearly recurring project.
The first workshop will start on July 30th, located in Grounded’s indoor space at St George church. The community meals are set to start August 1st, running until August 29th.

"Wearable tech is becoming increasingly more integrated into our everyday lives. From the Apple Watch to Bluetooth headsets, our daily walks, high street shopping and work commutes are all intertwined with the technology we always carry on our bodies. Following this trend for on-the-go tech, Disney’s theme park and resort wristbands have become just as integrally a part of the Disneyland experience as the immersive characters and attractions (Sobitan and Vlachos 2020)."
