QUARTET- A TIMELESS TRIBUTE TO POLO MAJESTY SEDALIA, COLORADO

AIDEN SIMPSON AND JAKE DRUMMOND

To reconnect the culture and study the connection between visitors, players, horses, and the game to understand why they all come together for a polo match and how we can design around this idea. Our goal is designers to create an experience through the built environment. How can we do this for polo matches, training, and more.

/SITE CONTEXT/ 2023 Located in Sedalia, Colorado, The Denver polo club has been around for just over 3 decades. Its beautiful landscape along with great views of Colorado allow for this location to be the central hub for polo in Colorado. Visiting site gave the team great insights on how the land is kept, how the game of polo operates along with the large social aspect of the game itself.

With the large operation that the Denver polo club manages and no buildings to oversee these environments, this was the perfect place to create the Denver polo club a hub as an epitome of equestrian elegance and a hub for enthusiasts of the noble sport of polo.

We first wanted to examine how the site circulates and where would be the best spot for our complex to be built in order to enhance circulation but not affect the existing conditions of this location and what made this place special to so many before this would be built.

This is emulating the views and existing context of the site. We wanted to point out the views that should be captured along with what the site had looked like before we had altered it. Its important to point out its flaws before that way we can find a solution

American Quarter Horse:

The modern American Quarter hours Is a short stocky horse ranging about 15 hands tall. These are some of the more common horses around because of their trainabillity and they athletic prowess.

Collectabillity:

Intelligence : Most horses are known for their intelligence and how they think. Horses are able to comprehend movements and signs and memorize these traits much faster than humans are able to do. That is why horse are mature animals.

Athletic Ability: Horses are freakishly athletic with they’re jumping ability and how fast these creatures are allow them to be so sought after.

Build: Horses are very emotional creatures. Many Horse collectors can have an emotional connection with a special horse which allows them to buy them. Others may have a worse temper and buyers may be subject to not buy them cause of this.

Emotional Connection: A horse build is one of the most shocking aspects of this beautiful animal. They’re physique and muscle definition allows some horse to be more money than others and participate in a wider range of activities.

Thoroughbreds are thought to be most well known horses as most commonly seen in horse racing.

These beautiful creatures stand 16 hands tall and can weigh up to 1,200 pounds. These horse have incredible intelligence but are known to be the most emotional and should be used for experienced riders.

Morgan Horse:

The Morgan Horse is one of the smaller horses standing around 14 hands tall. Their build allows them to have power and endurance which is rarely found in larger horse. Most used for their pleasure riding these horses, are not used for much competition.

Arabian Horse: One of the more friendly Breeds, The Arabian Horse are the most loyal horses you can buy. The stand around 15 hands tall and are around 900 pounds.

One of the more rare color of horse these animals can range from Grey,bay, and roan.

Caring for a horse: Docility: Horse ability to learn and adapt to their riders make a very good polo horse. Being able to learn different moves and adapt without fight makes them a high demand.

Our next few iterations highlight how our form came about.

Many diagram influenced our design but we really wanted to come from natural features so sun, landscape etc. We wanted to integrate our stables very uniquely which is why we built them in with the topography creating a blend with the environment.

The culture of polo influenced or design heavily as we wanted to create something that embraced everyone into one singular place. Polo is a sport celebrated world wide, and being able to have a polo hub that embraces different cultures from around the globe. That was our driving idea as well because it introduces new comers to the beautiful game of polo along with unite veterans of the game that just want to observe the game that they love.

Materiality:

Our materiality was such a big part in our design process. The wood served as a Platte to infuse warmth and a connection between the users and nature creating a welcoming environment. Our concrete was chosen for its stability to resemble a horse to an extent for their strength and durability. Finally, The incorporation of metal elements in the design serves as a more futuristic and modern for changing times to use as a timeline that our building embodies.

Our programming was though out very diligently. We wanted our upstairs to be as public and as welcoming as possible and then as you go to the second floor it is a more private and quiet area with suites only for people who paid for the suites, and the working your way down to the third floor be more public again with more entertainment because of the proximity to the field. These programs are spaced so all users are able to experience the entirety of the museum or just aspects they want to see.

Our circulation was constructed to not only provide the most effective way to move throughout our building but as well guide the user through our museum to experience all the aspects of our building. We have two staircases to inform users about polo and other all of out programs throughout our building.
