In the last three years, close to 30 families have moved to the participating communities from Brooklyn, Long Island, Manhattan, Queens, Riverdale, Rochester, and Staten Island, NY, and Highland Park and Teaneck, NJ.

Jacob Colchamiro (JKHA ‘17/RKYHS ‘21) placed second in the International Chidon HaTanach Competition that took place in Israel. Competing against over 80 students from 30 countries, Jacob skillfully reached the top 16 and was proud to stand next to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on the winner’s podium.

The Kushner Cobras Baseball Team defeated Maimonides to win the 2019 Ezra Schwartz Memorial Baseball Tournament. The tournament was established in memory of Maimonides alum Ezra Schwartz who was killed while studying in Israel for the year.

When debating the resolution: “voting in the United States should be mandatory for all people over the age of 18”, JKHA Middle School debaters took home the overall win. In addition, JKHA students won First Place speaker and First Place team.

The JKHA Middle School Girls Torah Bowl team took home First Place in their league. The JKHA Middle School Boys Torah Bowl team home Second Place in the league championship. Both teams faced the other division champions from all over the New Jersey/New York area to vie for the league title.

• RKYHS sophomore engineering students won First Place at the CIJE annual Innovation Day Conference in New York City in the Innovation in Health Care category for their “Feedbot” facial recognition software. The software enables physically challenged people to feed themselves independently.

• Three of the top 10 finalist teams selected from all over New Jersey for the Pitch NJ Youth Entrepreneur and Pitch Competition were RKYHS scientific engineering students. The groups presented in a “Shark Tank” style in front of a panel of expert judges comprised of business and corporate leaders. One of our teams took home first prize for the JDawg Juul detector, which senses Juuling in schools and notifies administrators.

JKHA HIGHLIGHTS

As part of the Names, Not Numbers© project, the JKHA eigth graders interviewed Holocaust survivors, preserving their stories for posterity.

They researched, filmed, and edited the survivors’ stories, and their moving finished product was screened for a packed house in the Epstein-Stein Auditorium, interwoven into a powerful documentary following the students throughout the year-long process.

JKHA CHESED Lower School students embrace innovation, creativity, communication, and collaboration in the MakerSpace including building a model of the Great Wall of China during a study of China, creating different types of Native American shelters during a Native American unit, and creating innovative sukkot after learning about what defines a kosher sukkah.

Eighth graders researched the science of hydraulics and its impact and use in the world at a STEM fair. Their work culminated in designing and building a hydraulics machine, making strong real life connections, and enriching their skills as makers, team players, and planners.

In Early Childhood, learning parshat hashavua is an experiential learning opportunity where teachers and students act out the weekly parsha, and focus on different hands-on experiences. They invited members of the office staff to the classroom when learning about Avraham and Sarah’s open tent for guests, made lentil soup in honor of Parshat Toldot, collected canned goods for the homeless connecting it to the famine in Parshat Miketz, and much more!

Inter-grade programming throughout JKHA instills a feeling of community and helps to build relationships amongst different grades. Lower School students participate in a uniquely designed Learning Buddies Program where older buddies read books to younger children, and interact in different activities and programming throughout the year. Middle School joined with Lower School for learning sessions about Purim, enjoyed lively chagigot, and celebrated the mitzvah of hachnassat orchim (welcoming guests) visiting “Avraham” and “Sarah’s” tents in connection with Parshat Vayera.

Lower School students have an opportunity to earn “Cobra Cash” for showing kindness, being respectful to others, completing work on time, and completing work they find challenging, which they then exchange in the prize store, which is open monthly during Rosh Chodesh.

Third and fourth graders incorporated the Middle School’s Writing Revolution curriculum in order to ensure a seamless transition in writing from Lower School through the Middle School years. Students develop the ability to write for a multitude of audiences, incorporating persuasive, informative or opinion pieces and learning to apply the common traits of writing to enhance their final products.

The advisory program for fifth and sixth graders focuses on the social, emotional and character issues that typically present themselves in the Middle School years, while fostering in them a sense of confidence, self, and purpose. Topics of each advisory session vary including nurturing a growth mindset, how they can manifest comportment and derech eretz, how to troubleshoot organizational and academic issues, and strat4

As a culminating activity to their electricity unit, fourth grade students created and wired working menorahs that they designed and built using creativity for the design and closed circuits with a switch to light each menorah.

In their space science curriculum, sixth graders embraced a “Design Thinking Process,” designing board games for younger students where the players developed scientific skills and made a connection with Jewish locations, values, or holidays.

After developing a prototype that they tested with the end users, they collected feedback through observation and interviews. Utilizing the feedback and using a “Mistake Mechanic” and “Success Strategist” approach, the young scientists made and incorporated changes to make a better version of their final model.

42 bags of clothes collected in second grade clothing drive with the RKYHS Homeless Awareness Club Jonathan Zughaft (JKHA ‘12/RKYHS ‘16), a Lone Soldier in the IDF, came to speak to the Lower School about his experiences in the IDF, and picked up cards the students made to deliver to his fellow chayalim in the paratroopers unit.

Judaic studies and general studies faculty worked in tandem for a meaningful program for eighth graders for Yom Hashoah that built upon their study of World War II and the Holocaust through their reading of Night and Maus in language arts. The program asked students to consider different reactions to the Holocaust, belief in God and Judaism, then read and discuss texts and write reflectively on these topics.

As part of the JKHA seventh and eighth grade study of the building of the Beit Hamikdash in Sefer Melachim, students participated in a Project Based Learning unit where they learned about how our synagogues are a mikdash me’at, patterned in many ways after the Beit Hamikdash. Working in groups, they created their own shuls with a name, mission statement, guidelines, and an action plan as they considered what makes a shul special and presented their projects to peers.

The Middle School students gave back to the community with a week of Chanukah chesed - cooking and packing food for Shabbat for those in need through Tomchei Shabbos, visiting the senior citizens and residents at Daughters of Miriam, Care One, and Daughters of Israel nursing home, and packing boxes of supplies that families need at the Community Food Bank of NJ.

Over Sukkot, Middle School students put together Chanukah packages to be sent overseas to Jewish American soldiers. Students were amazed to see the packages in the hands of US troops at the American Army Base in Kuwait over Chanukah!

JKHA Drama Club performs Seussical

Middle School’s Middot in the Modern Age intersected current events, Tanach sources, and literature, applying the idea of derech eretz in real-world scenarios and in a modern Jewish context.

Students discussed the meaning of “consent” and understanding what that looks like in real life and current events including the #metoo movement and the Kavanaugh hearings. They then made meaningful connections to a literary analysis of an excerpt from Of Mice and Men, and examined Tanach sources to explore the ways in which consent and respect are approached and how that understanding should inform the students’ decisions on a daily basis.

RKYHS HIGHLIGHTS All of RKYHS worked on a Project-Based Learning unit dedicated to understanding the meaning behind various mitzvot. Students chose mitzvot to study and research, then created blogs or vlogs to reflect upon their personal engagement with the mitzvah, and produced creative videos to teach their peers about their mitzvah.

Tenth graders researched 23 cities in Israel for a project for Yom Ha’atzmaut with Ivrit and Judaic Studies, drawing on sources from Tanach, Jewish history, archaeology, maps, and modern technology. They then presented to the other grades in an “Israeli City Fair.”

Members of the class of 2019 took part in a life-changing eight day Holocaust Studies Seminar in Poland. The journey included experiencing once vibrant Jewish communities, visits to concentration camps and also to surviving area synagogues, which the students filled once again with the sounds of Jewish prayers, songs and dancing. The RKYHS students completed their trip with a brief visit to Israel.

RKYHS juniors participated in a two-day Israel Studies Seminar, jointly run by Bnei Akiva and RKYHS, and held at Camp Moshava. Over the course of the program, the students learned about Zionism, the history of the State of Israel, years of accomplishments, and its central role for the Jewish people, empowering the next generation of Jewish leaders.

Over Chanukah, RKYHS Judaic studies, history, English, Ivrit, and STEM teachers collaborated to facilitate interdisciplinary learning centering on the Menorah, the emblem of the State of Israel, and how we can bring our ancient traditions into our modern lives.

SEED SPEAKER PROGRAM

Every week, students attend the RKYHS SEED (Student Enrichment, Education, and Development) Program to hear new perspectives on a wide range of topics from accomplished and broad-thinking professionals and volunteers. A small sampling of speakers from this past year included:

RKYHS was excited to add a ceramics program to its extensive arts program and a kiln was installed for students to create beautiful works of art in this medium.

RKYHS Class of 2019 were admitted to highly selective programs including: Music Business at NYU Steinhardt, Northeastern Cyber Security Program, PriceWaterhouse Coopers Honors Program at Binghamton University, and Berklee College of Music.

The school and outside community were treated to performances of Legally Blonde from the RKYHS Drama Club. The talented cast wowed the audience with their theatrical skills and stage presence throughout the performance.

HIGHLIGHTS RKYHS was proud to announce the launch of the JKHA/RKYHS Scientific Research Training Institute (SRTI), which formalizes the school’s focus on training students to conduct real scientific research on real world problems in line with the overall approach of “Learning Science By Doing Science.” Thanks to a generous pilot grant from the Steven and Beverly Rubenstein Foundation, RKYHS is able to offer advanced science and research training to students at a level rarely found in a college setting let alone at the high school level.

The school acquired: • An ultra performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) instrument for isolation and characterization of small molecules.

• A scanning electron microscope (SEM) capable of visualizing images at magnifications approaching 250,000 times. Only a handful of high schools in the country have such an instrument.

• RKYHS students are using the SEM together with advanced DNA analytic techniques in the molecular genetics lab and classic microscopy to collect and specifically identify and quantify different pollen strains and correlate their findings with climate change data and clinical data related to human respiratory conditions. JKHA/RKYHS is now being listed as a recognized Pollen Data Collection Center. This work is being done in collaboration with Dr. Leonard Bielory and Kean University.

• RKYHS installed a new tissue culture laboratory, which enables RKYHS and SRTI students to grow mammalian cells including human cells so that they can further investigate and test the genetic manipulations that they are doing in the successful genetic engineering program, which already boasts a well-equipped, advanced molecular genetics laboratory.

• Current student research projects include: identification of neurovirulence determinants in the Zika Virus genome, investigation of CTLA-4 polymorphisms and Interleukin-2 signaling in Type I diabetes; CFTR gene repair and gene expression in cystic fibrosis, bioinformatic analysis of BRCA-1 mutations as a tool in predicting disease progression, and Identification of Dec-2 / Cry-2 mutations related to circadian rhythm, sleep cycle, and short sleeper syndrome.

Mikie Sherrill Current congresswoman for New Jersey’s 11th Congressional district visited RKYHS while on the campaign trail.

RKYHS hosted the ninth annual entirely student-run Battle of the Bands competition featuring bands from RKYHS and from many other yeshivot in the tristate area competing to be crowned the winner. Proceeds were donated to No Kid Hungry, an organization that provides resources to children facing hunger.

The RKYHS choir recorded and released their first track at the end of the school year. The song was professionally mixed by a specialist who has also worked with Pentatonix and Glee.

RKYHS CHESED

RKYHS students joined residents of the Lester Senior Housing for monthly visits all year long filled with singing, dancing, camaraderie, and bonding as part of the Dovid Ben Yitzchak z”l Jewish Elderly Program.

Twelve RKYHS students volunteered for Habitat For Humanity in California, building houses and helping with home restoration after the damage caused during the devastating Thomas Wildfires.

All of RKYHS participated in a Yom Chesed and volunteered at locations all around the area including visiting the elderly, working at a food bank and food pantry, cleaning up an arboretrum, bowling with Yachad members, sorting clothes for Yad Leah, spending time with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and playing with children at a special needs school for children with multiple and severe disabilities and medical challenges.

JKHA and RKYHS students, faculty members, alumni, and parents took part in a pre-Pesach hair donation drive. All of the participants donated a minimum of eight inches of their hair to The Hair We Share to make wigs for people with medical hair loss. A total of over

The RKYHS Homeless Awareness Club made monthly visits to distribute much-needed clothing and supplies to the homeless on the streets of Newark and at Port Authority and Penn Station. A group of students also slept outside for a night at RKYHS to feel what it’s like to experience homelessness for one evening raising money for Covenant House.

Overview A JKHA/RKYHS education provides the foundation for vibrant Jewish life and prepares the next generation to pass on the torch of our traditions.

Yet, an exceptional Jewish and secular education is more expensive today than ever before. The modern world demands modern methods of education, and these, together with an exceptional faculty plus a state-of-the-art facility, come at a steep price. Full tuition does not cover the costs of a JKHA/RKYHS education, and, even with the innovative affordability programs we have introduced to reduce the financial burden of tuition, the majority of our school families need some form of financial assistance.

Our major gift campaigns have taken our educational program to the next level of academic excellence and are a bold step towards ensuring the future of a JKHA/RKYHS education. The L’Atidenu Financial Assistance Endowment Campaign, established in 2014, is designed to provide a steady, reliable stream of revenue to perpetually fund financial assistance. Spring 2019 Senior Poland Experience

RKYHS seniors traveled to Poland for a deeper understanding of the Shoah. This visit to former concentration camps and memorials, as well as surviving synagogues, is made possible through the leadership and generosity of a dedicated group of supporters.

Opened in 2018-19...

A community-wide campaign funded the construction of the Naomi Rosenfeld Kehilah Center, a vibrant new multi-functional space to honor and remember JKHA parent Naomi Rosenfeld z”l. To dedicate the space, the students enjoyed a ruach-filled concert and chagigah featuring renowned Jewish musician, Eitan Katz.

The Fishel Felix Rozen Torah Reference Library is a new Torah study reference section within the RKYHS Study Center. The dignified space was dedicated in memory of Fishel Felix Rozen z”l, beloved father of Bat Sheva and Murray Halpern, and grandfather of JKHA/RKYHS students and alumni Audrey, Nathaniel, and Gabriel Halpern and Maya Sasson.

A generous grant from the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey funded the expansion and thoughtfully designed renovation of the JKHA/RKYHS Student Healthcare Center. The new center offers greater privacy and enhanced health services.

The school year ended with the exciting opening of the first phase of our new JKHA/RKYHS recreational spaces on the side of the school for students to enjoy.

The first phase to open includes a turf soccer field, two playgrounds for Early Childhood and Lower School, and a full track.

The above architectural renderings depict the next phase of the expansive new recreational area. When fully completed, the sweeping six acres of property will feature three basketball courts, two tennis courts, a breathtaking amphitheater, an inviting pavilion and pergola, open grass fields for play, and beautiful outdoor classrooms/seating areas in addition to the areas that opened at the end of the school year.
