Studio I Bricks to Break Freedom of expression manifested in bricks and mortar.

The project begins on the edges of segregated university campuses. Bricks, as building materials, embody the essence of both fluidity and rigidity. Their various permeabilities weave public and private spaces, bridge the gap between individuals and society, find harmony in the interplay of the organic and the artificial - and BREAK all the boundaries.

An education space at Flimwell Park, East Sussex.

Flimwell Park is where human and nature co-habiting. This project is to explore the opportunities around the chain of ponds and the wet woodland at the Flimwell site, where I picture it as a potential education space for people to immerse in and discover nature.

Shore Up Canvey Coastal Flood Defence + Memorials + Commons + Study Ground

Canvey Island has been prone to flooding for many years and now the site is surrounded by seawalls and lots of hard coastal defences. My project first looked into the geographical process of the site, some existing practices of beachcombing, and try to understand how deposition works and can be utilised by people. My final proposition is to form a new natural barrier and buffer land against sea level rise by modifying the topography and promoting deposition.

A set of giant staircases will be built between Ladder Street and Hillier Street, embedded with one wider platform and one narrower platform. The iterative usage of local granite will highlight the history of Ladder Street and Hong Kong quarries. The platforms will be used as a marketplace or functional space for festivals and celebrations.

Silencer: The Post-Battlefield

The site is a paradox. On one hand, it is a historic military site for commemorating the deaths in a war. On the other hand, it is a newly built leisure place with a large lawn and barbecue sites.

In order to balance the nosiness and the quietness, this intervention of sound creates space in between the two extremes, and for people to meditate. Iterations were done with a combination of artificial shells and pits, and natural slopes, which would create interesting spatial effects by diverging, intersecting and juxtaposing things. They block away noises from human activities (e.g screaming, laughing, yelling) and amplify the sounds from nature (e.g. wind, birds, leaves). They would create special spaces and experiences for people.

Representing Terrains

After taking pictures of materials, textures, and details from my surrounding outdoor context, the images are compiled and edited in Photoshop into black and white. An artifact map is used to establish rules (axis, connection, repetition, transparency, contrast, etc.) in laying out the collages. An imagined landscape is formed based on ideas of composition, abstraction and rule-based interpretation of information.

Transposing Landscape

An Old and Valuable Tree is represented in a variety of assemblages based on its situation within the environment, and being transposed to different scales of time, place and system.

1. TIME - Illustrate the tree through a series of different stages of its life cycle, seasonal cycle and daily cycle.

2. PLACE - Analyse the tree through widening zones of influence, from micro scale to macro scale.

3. SYSTEM - Highlight the physical and symbolic relationships between the tree, parts of the tree and its connected systems.

Spatial Fragments

A physical artifact with specific spatial articulation (i.e. confluence, divergence, juxtaposition) to reveal the dynamics and linked moments of landscapes. Each contains a 6x6m squared base.

Based on collaging B&W pictures of materials, textures, and details collected from my surrounding outdoor context, an imagined topography is formed. Imagine it is a large piece of agricultural field, with 2 mountains intersected and some depressions scattered. Via iterative modelling, spatial inspirations are stimulated.

To test the light refraction and light reflection of the composite of two transparent materials, epoxy is chosen as medium and glass is chosen as aggregate. The composite can round off the sharp edges of crushed glass without losing its light-related properties. The material properties are tested with different sizes and colours of crushed glass.

Invocation of Time in Woods

Media

We have all developed our own conception of Time in nature. I think it exists as 4 elements - network, scale, cycle and conversion. Inspired by Lefebvre’s Rhythm-analysis, the concept of time might be graphically represented. For the time being, I explored the way we posit our existence in reality, and experimentally tested new mediums, new perspectives and new forms of communication between man and the environment.

[ 47 ] 08 Biology exploration of life

Biology is the study of living organisms from viruses to humans. Fundamental to the study of life is unfolding biological organization at many levels, from molecular architecture to ecosystem structure. Throughout my study of training in scientific thinking and problem solving, I have become more environmentally aware in terms of biological conservation and other environmental issues. Some of the projects may offer insights for my further development in the field of landscape architecture.
