LDAR 5501 | landscape architec ture s tudio 1 | mapping the unexpec ted Lead Instructor // Jade Orr // UC Denver Spring 2023 As this studio is the very first studio that our ML A students are exposed to, the first por tion of the semester is spent developing the necessary skills to read, represent, and analyze the landscape. This assignment tasked students with observing and r e a d i n g t h e l a n d s c a p e i n n e w, u n e x p e c t e d w a y s . T h e y w e r e a s k e d t o c h a l l e n g e the way they were viewing the landscape in order to consider potential insights about place and site that would expand their awareness and foreground subtle, phenomenal, or even ephemeral moments and elements.

The students were asked to immerse themselves in the place and to simply observe w h a t w a s h a p p e n i n g a r o u n d t h e m . T h e y c o u l d c h o o s e t o o b s e r v e c o l o r, l i g h t , s m e l l s , sur faces, tex tures, sounds, movements, boundaries, signage, or any thing else they found to be captivating on the site. By obser ving these elements of the site, students were able to begin considering what made the site unique and what shaped their experience there. They were ul timately asked to create a “mapping” and model of the site that conveyed their experience and perceptions of this place.

Each student was asked to walk through the site in order to get an over view of the site a n d i t s c o n t e x t i n i t s e n t i r e t y. T h e y w e r e r e q u i r e d t o r e c o r d t h e i r e x p e r i e n c e s a l o n g three specific transects within the site.

Their landscape experience(s) could be understood as a stor y or narrative – sequential, becoming, composed of individual events, moments, and points of obser vation.

LDAR 5501 | landscape architec ture s tudio 1 | f inal de sign projec t s Lead Instructor // Jade Orr // UC Denver Spring 2023 To c o n c l u d e t h i s i n t r o d u c t o r y s t u d i o , s t u d e n t s w e r e a s k e d t o d e v e l o p a c o m p r e h e n s i v e design for the site, Mestizo-Cur tis Park . The park is the oldest in Denver and s t u d e n t s w e r e a s k e d t o c o n s i d e r i t s h i s t o r y, i t s c o n t e x t , d i v e r s i t y o f u s e r g r o u p s , and their on-site obser vations in the development of their design. Students spent considerable time on site throughout the semester and were able to ground their design inclinations in the field. As this was the ver y first design studio for these students, they were asked to think big, take big swings, and not shy away from creative risk taking.

The final designs ranged considerably and were wonder ful explorations of what this park could possibly be. Some students chose to focus on the cultural histor y of the area while others incorporated the long lost ecological diversity of the site. The final deliverables for the studio included a rendered site plan, illustrative sections, suppor ting diagrams, and rendered perspectives of their design.

LDAR 660 4 | ver tical landscape architec ture s tudio | c oexis ting landscape s Lead Instructors // Jade Orr + Mariko Tominaga Spring 2023 For this ver tical studio, over the course of 8 weeks, students were asked to research and explore the relationship between humans and wildlife at Stark K Ranch in Aurora, CO. The students were challenged to explore ecological and environmental problems at the site scale and beyond in order to come up with their proposed design solution.

During their design exploration, students were asked to meaningfully consider the coexistence of both humans and wildlife on the site as this nature preserve is wellloved by residents of Denver and Aurora but also provides an impor tant ecological footprint within an increasingly urbanized contex t. Students were tasked with l o o k i n g a c ro s s s c a l e s w i t h s o m e f o c u s i n g o n m i c ro ha b i t a t s f o r t h e s i te ’s sma l l e s t inhabitants and others generating site scale design inter ventions. In order to really think critically about their proposed design interventions, students were also tasked with envisioning and planning how the site and their proposal would evolve together over the nex t 50 years. Each student presented their research, a conceptual site plan, and suppor ting diagrams and graphics that helped communicate their design intentions.

PROJECT REGENERATION Project Regeneration offers rest and recharge for the North American migratory monarch butterfly and visitors of Star K Ranch. This environmental intervention will restore ecosystem services and increase biodiversity. The site is set up to allow visitors to interact with the ecosystem at work and see how it morphs with time.

Human actions have contributed to the decline of global bat populations through use of harmful pesticides, ingested by bats via insects prey, and habitat degradation through urbanization. Misconceptions of bats being harmful to humans have been disproved but remain popular. Through interactive education and bat habitat improvement, human perceptions of these unique mammals are reformed while counteracting harmful impact done to their threatened populations.

To help Star K bats have sufficient food sources, night blooming plant, fragrant flowers, and host shrubs will be planted surrounding the wetlands. Use of larvicide will be phased out, allowing Star K bats to prey on pesky mosquitoes instead.

re search + de sign | climate jus tic e in the c entral valle y Project Site // Central Valley of California Project Par tners // Environmental Defense Fund + USC Landscape Justice Initiative Summer 2021 - Present This work is par t of a nearly three-year research study focusing on the agricultural landscape o f t h e S a n J o a q u i n Va l l e y i n C a l i f o r n i a w h i c h e m e r g e d f r o m t h e e n a c t m e n t o f t h e 2 0 1 4 Sustainable Groundwater Management Act. The act, which was aimed at bringing critically overdrafted groundwater basins back into sustainabilit y estimates that between 500,000 to 1 million acres of agricultural land will have to come out of production, drastically altering t h e f u t u r e o f t h e S a n J o a q u i n Va l l e y.

As monumental as this land transition will be, it also presents the oppor tunity to reinvision an equitable future for the region, prioritizing the environment, the people, and the rapidly changing climate that make up this unique landscape. I have worked in conjunction with the U S C L a n d s c a p e J u s t i c e I n i t i a t i v e o n t h i s r e s e a r c h a n d t h r o u g h o u t o u r s t u d y, a p a r t n e r s h i p with the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) emerged. The EDF has taken charge of overseeing a Multi-Benefit Land Repurposing program in the region to help provide an economically viable and ecologically sound transition of the overwhelming amount of fallowed productive land. In order to achieve this goal and help valley stakeholders understand the necessit y of this transition, EDF has tasked us with developing communicative presentation graphics to present to communities, farmers, and other implicated groups in the region. Within our work , we have been tasked with developing parameters for imagining three scenarios; uncoordinated fallowing, coordinated fallowing, and a radical land transition.

Our scenarios have been based on direct feedback from stakeholders and consultants, on the ground research and community meetings, as well as analy tical research and geospatial analysis of the conditions in the region. Throughout this work , I have been intricately involved with each step of our research and mapping, community and stakeholder meetings, and have worked collaboratively to provide guidance and direction for presentation graphics by developing annotative diagrams to be built upon. While this work is ongoing, the end product will be comprised of a series of regional scale maps as well as rendered scenarios depicting what the implementation of multi-benefit land repurposing might look like across the region.

This comprehensive park design was developed for the Cit y of Palmdale, located nor th of Los Angeles. When we were brought on to the project, the site was completely vacant sitting adjacent to a Los Angeles Count y Fire Station and a neighborhood elementar y school. After a series of community engagement meetings, attended by over 150 residents, the final park design was developed. The new park design featured an inclusive playground embedded into the steep hillside, meandering walking paths with new lighting, picnic areas, seat walls, quiet spaces for outdoor r e f l e c t i o n a n d n a t u r e p l a y, a s w e l l a s a n i n t e r a c t i v e d r y s t r e a m b e d t o p r o v i d e oppor tunities for play but to also address the drainage issues on site.

While at Withers & Sandgren, I was responsible for developing conceptual and design development graphics for this project as well as assisting in the development of the expansive planting palette and plan for the park . I also worked closely with the project manager through beginning stages of cost estimates and construction documentation of the park . The vision for the park was brought to life and built in 2022, and has become a well loved community space.

T h i s p r o j e c t w a s d e s i g n e d f o r Tr i - C i t y M e n t a l H e a l t h S e r v i c e s w h i c h s e r v e s a d i ve r s e p o p u la t i o n w i t h i n t h e C i t y o f Po m o na . Th e s i te , a d ja c e n t to t h e p ro v i d e r ’s offices, was a near defunct lot with informal plantings scattered across the site.

Through engagement with the service providers, mental health professionals, and maintenance team at the site, a holistic site design was developed. Design considerations had to include var ying levels of comfor tabilit y in open space, sight lines, areas for communal gathering and areas for individual reflection. Providers graciously shared their insights and exper tise with us regarding the needs and desires of their patients based on their var ying diagnoses. The final design included sinuous paths for meandering, productive fruit tree plantings, a contemplative labyrinth, ADA accessible garden beds and a shaded outdoor classroom for group activities and center events.

While at Withers & Sandgren, I was responsible for leading the concept development of this project, while subsequently working through design development, and beginning stages of construction documentation for this project. After being put on hold due to COVID associated funding issues, the project kicked off construction in April 2023.

T h i s p r o j e c t w a s d e s i g n e d f o r t h e P l e a s a n t Va l l e y R e c r e a t i o n a n d P a r k D i s t r i c t i n the City of Camarillo. The 40 year old, well loved park , was suffering from issues of inadequate lighting, excessive water use, drainage impairment, and inaccessibility throughout the park . E x tensive community engagement was done with residents from the surrounding neighborhood before resolving the final design. Residents had the oppor tunity to design with us, voice their opinions, concerns, and desires for the park , and provide critical feedback on the final park design. Many of the final park design elements included increased oppor tunities for play and fitness, a comprehensive lighting plan, and the introduction of native plantings to not only reduce water demand but also bring pollinators into the park .

While at Withers & Sandgren, I was responsible for the development of conceptual design and design development graphics as well as the graphics and informational materials for community engagement. Alongside the firm principle, I was also responsible for attending each community engagement meeting and event, working with residents through collaborative design, and collecting their invaluable feedback for the park grant application.
