I due protagonisti del primo episodio della serie tv Black Mirror si chiamano Martha e Ash. Sono belli e comuni. Ash ha i capelli rossi e il volto appuntito, Martha è rotonda e dolce. Si sono sposati da pochissimo e si sono trasferiti nel cottage che lui ha ereditato dalla famiglia. Probabilmente hanno speso qualche fine settimana a riordinare la casa. Di sicuro oggi per completare il trasloco hanno affittato un furgone.

Li conosciamo per la prima volta mentre tornano a casa sul furgone. Mentre viaggiano intravediamo un navigatore satellitare, è come il nostro, ma sembra più bello ed efficace. Quando li lasciamo nell'abitacolo a chiacchierare, la telecamera si alza e come in un videogioco riprende il profilo delle luci dei fari mentre disegna un cuore allungato che si addentra nel buio tutt'intorno.

Il giorno dopo Ash decide di restituire il furgone.

Saluta Martha e va.

Non sappiamo come muore, deve essere andato a sbattere mentre con due dita scriveva un tweet, una mail o condivideva una foto. La tecnologia può tutto. Anche far ricomparire, nel futuro-presente in cui si svolge Black Mirror, il nostro Ash e dargli una identità verosimile, programmata sulla base dei suoi tweet, e una materialità viva e mobile1 . Martha dopo la felicità di poter baciare, novella Maria, un risorto, non lo amerà più. E una volta data alla luce la loro figlia, da buona moglie lo rinchiuderà

By the way, with a single move it rehabilitates and overtakes Duan Hanson or Chuck Close’s hyperrealism and it prefigures the futuristic developments of the nanotechnologies and of the 3D culture.

The two protagonists of the first episode of the television drama series Black Mirror are called Martha and Ash. They are pretty and common. Ash has red hair and a sharp face. Martha is plump and sweet.

They just got married and moved into the cottage Ash’s family left him. They probably spent some weekends cleaning the house. Today, in order to move, they must have rent a van.

We get to meet them for the first time as they are driving the van back home. While they are travelling we get a glimpse of a GPS, it’s just like the one we have, but this one seems cooler and more efficient. When we let them chat in their house, the camera rises and, just like in a video game, registers the profile of the spotlights while drawing a longshaped heart which penetrates the surrounding darkness.

The day after Ash decides to give the van back.

He greets Martha goodbye and leaves.

We do not know how he dies, he must have had an accident while writing a tweet or an email with two fingers, or while sharing a photo. Technology can do anything. It can even – in the future-present in which Black Mirror takes place – bring our Ash back and give him a reasonable identity, on the basis of his tweets, and a mobile, full of life mobility1.

Martha, after the happiness of being able to kiss – this modern Mary – a man who has risen from the dead, will stop loving him. And, once she has given

nella mansarda a ricordo di se stesso. Ma questa è un'altra storia.

La storia che interessa noi è più astratta ed è interessata alla distopia di Black Mirror e alla sua diretta ma efficace capacità di evocare una questione centrale per la lettura delle opere di Jacopo Mazzonelli.

Il nucleo interpretativo del lavoro di Jacopo Mazzonelli per Obtaining the History fa i conti con gli stessi spettri riproduttivi seppur da un punto di vista differente. L'approccio è meno didascalico, esclude l'opzione del dialogo sul filo del disgusto, elimina ogni riferimento alla cultura popular, in linea con questa logica evita epiche e relative epifanie consolatorie e si confronta con un profilo più propriamente speculativo, filosofico. Per ottenere questi risultati “geografici” tende a trasfigurare i piani di senso, li spinge in un vuoto psicologico dove prova a prendere per mano i punti fondanti della questione. Il lavoro procede per argomentazioni, tensioni e correzioni di pulsioni.

La prima tensione nell'ordine dell'argomentazione è storica: quando incontra la Storia il mondo finisce.

Obtaining the History è anche il titolo di un'opera: una architettura labirintica composta con le pagine di un vecchio album di fotografie. I volti contenuti, svaniti, forse mai inclusi sono chiunque.

Come in una macchina magica pre-cinematografica l'opera avvolge dentro di se un gruppo infinitamente replicabile di memorie. È essa stessa una tautologia autarchica della memoria. Ciò che costruisce è una sorta di caleidoscopio psicologico, un cordone ombelicale che struttura per empatia la materia del ricordo. La riproduzione trova scopo e genesi nella misurazione del tempo e dello spazio.

birth to their daughter, as a good wife, she will lock him in the attic in memory of himself. But this is another story.

The story we are interested in is more abstract and it concerns the dystopia in Black Mirror and its direct but efficient capacity to evoke a central issue for the interpretation of Jacopo Mazzonelli’s works.

The interpretative core for Jacopo Mazzonelli’s work as far as Obtaining the History is concerned faces the same reproductive spectra, but from a different point of view. The perspective is less didactic, it omits the option of the dialogue on the edge of disgust, it cancels any connection with the popular culture, congruent with this logic it avoids epical and related consolatory epiphanies and it confronts itself with a philosophical, more actually speculative profile. In order to reach these “geographic” results, he tends to transfigure the meaning levels, he pushes them into a psychological emptiness where he tries to seize the supporting points of the question. The work is made up of argumentations, tensions and impulse corrections.

The first tension in the order of argumentation is historical: when it meets History, the world comes to an end.

Obtaining the History is also the name of one of the artworks: a labyrinthic architecture made up of the pages of an old photo album. The included faces, the disappeared, the ones that may have never been there, could be anyone’s. Just like in a magical pre-cinema machine, the piece wraps up in itself an endlessly replicable group of memories. It is a selfsufficient memory tautology itself. What Mazzonelli creates is a sort of psychological kaleidoscope, an umbilical cord which sympathetically structures the substance of memories. Reproduction finds a

La seconda pulsione nell'ordine dell'argomentazione è razionale e tratta l'invincibilità della misura. La forza di questa è la sua banalità oggettiva: un metro è un metro, un minuto è un minuto. 8601, Studio per autoritratto ed Autoritratto trasformano la misurazione in un luogo rimosso: sono un muro di gomma penetrabile solo con il fioretto del trauma.

La storia prima di essere un fattore fisico è un fattore psichico, è insistenza, cancellazione. Fino a quando il progetto riproduttivo, esaltante come niente altro al mondo, assume le forme della sua fine.

Demographics è la terza argomentazione: l'inquietudine è statistica. Ed è la conferma del Grande Progetto (riproduttivo). Esso funziona perché l'ombra protegge il volto di chi guarda ma non di chi viene guardato e lo spettacolo a cui siamo invitati prevede sempre un'ustione. Stanca di tanto ardire, la materia ha sempre la meglio: la quarta argomentazione è il riposo. Essa nasce da un capovolgimento. Come in una tavola imbandita per una nuova festa Taxa recupera da un vecchio dizionario di medicina i volti che illustrano le razze. La composizione di nuove famiglie salvate dalla storia sono una parentesi di umanità, un respiro di intimità raffigurata. Un movimento pacificatorio, quasi - qui si – consolatorio, che restituisce senso al Progetto la cui terribile grandezza (misura) ora non appare.

La quinta argomentazione è una nota sulla perfezione. Da buona scolare è moderna, metafisica, leggera, quadrata: ha sostanza, luce ma non ha corpo. Toronto al suo interno contiene una storia mozzata. Le gambe dal Canada si sono fermate nelle quattordici teche che conservano il loro Movimento (necessariamente l'unico in forza della sua estrazione-astrazione), una griglia che inchioda la storia su se stessa. È un sapore, è bene ripeterlo, geografico. C'è un peso reale, un Atlante chiamato Europa. E dunque lo svelamento contraddice e nega il piacere dell'apparizione. Come in un'analisi ferrea esso va necessariamente riportato alla sostanza della Storia. Lì dove continua a battere.

purpose and a genesis in the measurement of time and space.

The second impulse in the order of argumentation is rational and deals with the invincibility of measure. Its objective triviality is its force: a meter is a meter, a minute is a minute. 8601, Study for a Self Portrait and Self Portrait change measure into a removed place: they represent a rubber wall which can be penetrated only by the trauma foil.

Before being a physical factor, history is a psychological factor, it is insistence, cancellation. Until the reproductive process, extremely exalting, takes the shapes of its own ending.

Demographics is the third argumentation: restlessness is statistics. And this confirms the Great (reproductive) Project. This works because the shade protects the face of the gazer but not the gazed at, and in the show we are invited to, somebody always gets burnt. But matter, tired of having dared too much, always wins: the fourth argumentation is rest. It is the result of an overturning. Just like on a table richly set up for a new feast, Taxa recovers the plates that illustrate the rays from an old medical dictionary. The composition of new families which have been saved from history are a parenthesis of humanity, a breath of illustrated intimacy. A peaceful movement, almost – here, yes – consolatory, which gives a meaning back to the Project the terrible beauty of which does not show now (measure).

The fifth argumentation is a note on perfection. It is scholarly modern, metaphysical, light, squared: it has substance, light, but it is bodiless.

There is a cut story in Toronto. From Canada, the legs have stopped in the fourteen display cases which preserve their Movement (which is necessarily the only strong of its extraction-abstraction), a grate which nails down history to itself. It’s a geographic flavor, we had better repeat it. There is a real weight, an Atlas called Europe. So, therefore, the disclosure contradicts and denies the pleasure of the appearance. Like in a hard-and-fast analysis it must be necessarily taken back to the substance of History. Where it continues beating.

Il Fonds 1244 Item 457 dei Toronto Historical Achives corrisponde una fotografia che ritrae quattro ragazze, in posa per uno scatto sul lago ghiacciato della città.

Doveva essere una bellissima giornata, perché le ombre appaiono particolarmente distinte.

La disposizione delle quattro coppie di lame, ripartite in quattordici teche di vetro acrilico, riproduce fedelmente le posizioni dei personaggi sul ghiaccio.

Dove si ferma l’opera, comincia quella successiva. La fotografia riappare in un cubo di vetro e risulta visibile solo attraverso lo specchio superiore. Da lontano al contrario l’opera non si rivela: il volume conserva la sua trasparenza.

The Fonds 1244 Item 457 of the Toronto Historical Archives consists of a photograph which depicts four girls, posing for a shot on the iced city lake. It must have been an amazingly beautiful day, because the shadows are particularly distinct.

The disposal of the four couple of blades, distributed in fourteen acrylic glass display cases, accurately reproduces the characters’ position on ice.

The following artwork begins where this one ends. The photograph reappears in a glass cube and is visible only through the upper mirror. From a distance, on the contrary, the artwork does not reveal itself: the volume preserves its transparency.

D.I.: 2 J.M.: D.I.: Disciplina J.M.: Quando penso alla disciplina immagino spesso dei grafici quantitativi. La disciplina mi rimanda immediatamente alla pratica strumentale, nello specifico alla figura del pianista. C’è qualcosa di misterioso che regola l’autodisciplinamento del solista. Un meccanismo biologico e mentale che, giorno dopo giorno, porta alla costruzione del suono e della tecnica. La mia Maestra del conservatorio, quando mi spiegava la nascita del suono e il

movimento delle falangi per produrlo, mi indicava addirittura i piedi. Come a dire che l’azione del dito nasce dai talloni e corre attraverso tutto il corpo.

Nell’arte credo sia la stessa cosa. Tali processi non assomigliano per nulla al meccanismo di un orologio svizzero, che va settato, tarato e successivamente brevettato per essere replicato. Assomigliano forse ad una macchina del caffè. Mi hanno insegnato che una macinatura appena più o meno spessa influisce sulla corsa di uscita dalla macchina.

E che l’umidità, i cambi climatici, la luna, sono in grado di modificare completamente il gusto. Alcuni anni fa, penso ora, fotografavo caffettiere attratto da non so che cosa.

AUTORITRATTO + STUDIO PER AUTORITRATTO – 2013 – I lavori si concentrano sul quarto autoritratto certo di Rembrandt, datato 1629.

Da quel momento l’artista avrebbe realizzato un’altra settantina di autoritratti, più di uno all’anno, fino alla morte. L’operazione mi ricorda le ossessioni sviluppate più di tre secoli dopo da Opalka.

Il volto del quarto autoritratto è più puntuto del solito, lo sguardo acuto.

Nello Studio per autoritratto, le lancette sono una pioggia battente ed ordinata.

Nell’Autoritratto il pigmento sostituisce la polvere, una lancetta nell'angolo scandisce il tempo.

The works focus on Rembrandt’s fourth certain self portrait, dated 1629. From that moment on, the artist would have made about another seventy self portraits, more than one a year, until he died. This operation reminds me of the obsessions that Opalka developed more than three centuries later.

The artist’s face, in this fourth self portrait, is sharper than usual, his gaze is wittier. In Studio per autoritratto, the clock hands are a pouring and neat rain.

In Autoritratto powder is replaced by pigment, a clock hand in a corner marks the time.

D.I.: 2 J.M.: D.I.: Discipline J.M.: When I think of discipline, I often imagine quantitative graphics. Discipline immediately brings to mind instrumental practice, namely the piano player figure. There is something mysterious about the soloist’s self discipline. A biological and psychological mechanism which, day after day, leads to the construction of sound and technique.

My Professor at the Conservatoire, when explaining how the sound is born and how the phalanxes

move in order to produce it, even pointed out the feet. Meaning that the action of the finger is produced by the heels and runs throughout the entire body. I believe that the same thing happens in art.

These processes are nothing like Swiss clockwork, which has to be set, adjusted and afterwards patented in order to be replicated. They are more like a coffee machine, maybe. I have been taught that a slightly coarser or finer grinding influences the speed of the coffee coming out. And that humidity, climate changes, the moon, are able to completely modify its taste. Some years ago, now that I think of it, I used to take photos of coffee machines, I do not know what fascinated me.

I used a 1902 photo album’s pages as walls for a labyrinthic structure which crosses the shapes of a square and of a hexagon.

D.I.: La resa J.M.: Forse è un libro di Enrico Ghezzi, che si intitola Paura e Desiderio, citando Kubrick, la prima cosa che mi viene in mente. Tendo spesso a ridurre l'esistenza a questi due fattori, così umani e terreni, così fisici, istintivi, prima che ragionati. La resa è un atto quotidiano che mi fa sentire meglio. Nei momenti di sconforto il primo istinto è quello di essere salvati, non di salvarsi. Un resa quindi non come atto conclusivo, ma generativo.

DEMOGRAPHICS – 2013 – La statistica ci dice oggi che ad ogni decesso corrispondono all'incirca tre nascite. Le conseguenze in termini di sovrappopolazione globale risultano evidenti. Sulla base di questi dati ho ricostruito due antichi fili a piombo.

Nowadays, statistics tells us that there are about three babies being born for every person that dies. The consequences in terms of global overpopulation are clearly obvious. On the basis of this information, I have reconstructed two antique plumbs.

D.I.: To surrender J.M.: Probably the first thing that comes to mind is a book by Enrico Ghezzi, called Fear and Desire – a quotation from Kubrick. I often tend to reduce existence to these two factors which are so human and earthly, so physical, so instinctive, before being reasoned. Surrender is a daily action which makes me feel better. When we are down, our first instinct is that of being saved, not of saving ourselves. Surrender, therefore, is not a conclusion, but a beginning.

D.I.: (as related to your works): get out of the way J.M.: But I never stay in the way, in front of them, I go around them all the time, as if I wanted to pass through them. I have been looking for a semantic tridimensionality – next to the volumetric one – for years.

TAXA – 2013 – La parola “taxa” si riferisce ad oggetti concreti, zoologici o botanici, consistenti in una popolazione di organismi (o un gruppo di popolazioni) classificabile.

Il Dizionario di medicina (Casalini, UTET, Torino, 1951) custodisce un compendio illustrato di tavole. Le quattro tavole dedicate alle razze hanno richiamato la mia attenzione per la forza dei volti e per l’atroce definizione medica, oggi in uso solamente nella zootecnica.

Ho acquisito e trasferito le immagini su vetro, sul modello dei vetrini biologici.

Nell’ordinarle sulle mensole di alluminio, ho riassunto un nuovo immaginario di famiglie, gesti e relazioni.

The word “taxa” refers to either zoological or botanical concrete objects, which consist of a classifiable population of organisms (or a group of populations).

The Medical Dictionary (Casalini, UTET, Torino, 1951) contains an illustrated compendium of plates. My attention has been drawn to the four plates dedicated to the rays because of the powerful faces and of the terrible medical definition, which is nowadays used solely in zootechnics.

I acquired the images and transferred them onto glass, on the model of microscope slides. While arranging them on the aluminum shelves, I created a new classification of families, gestures and relations.

Gli oggetti e le loro dimensioni ci sono stati imposti, come i nomi delle cose. Introdurre degli errori, o rendere volontariamente inutilizzabile un oggetto, è già un gesto. Ma non è ancora un’opera.

La mia posizione di artista e di collezionista seriale di oggetti entra spesso in conflitto. Ho imparato ad un certo punto però a compiere una scelta. Ora decido, a pochi giorni dall’acquisto, se l’oggetto sarà eventualmente modificabile o debba essere conservato.

8601 – 2013 – Una pallina ripresa con videocamera ad alta velocità rimbalza all’infinito su un piano. Una solida putrella di ferro sostiene l’esile tubo.

8601 sta per ISO 8601, standard internazionale per la rappresentazione di date ed orari. Nell’opera ciò che conta non è l’azione in sé, bensì l’attesa tradita da ogni rimbalzo.

A solid iron beam supports the fragile tube.

8601 stands for ISO 8601, an international standard for the representation of dates and times. In the artwork what counts is not the action in itself, but the expectation betrayed by each bounce.

~ 440 Hz ~ scale of 1:10, 1:25, and so on…In certain situations, trivially, in order to better perceive the presence of an object, you rebuild it on a larger scale, just like my almost two-meter high Diapason (Diapason, 2009), or on a heavier scale, like the lead envelopes (Envelope, 2012). Objects and their dimensions have been imposed on us, just like the names of things. To insert mistakes, or to render an object unusable on purpose, is already a gesture. But it is not an artwork yet.

My being an artist is often in conflict with my being a serial collector. At a certain point, though, I have learnt to make a choice. Now I decide, a few days after I’ve bought something, whether the object is likely to be modified or is to be preserved.

Jacopo Mazzonelli *1983, Trento Jacopo Mazzonelli nasce a Trento nel 1983. Si diploma in pianoforte e in musica contemporanea presso l’Accademia Internazionale TEMA di Milano.

Parallelamente agli studi musicali comincia a realizzare sculture e installazioni attraverso cui indaga spesso l’elemento sonoro (musica e rumore, ritmo e silenzio) pur non includendolo necessariamente come evento uditivo nell’opera.

Ha tenuto mostre personali in Italia e all’estero.

Le sue opere sono già incluse in importanti collezioni, tra cui AGI Collection - Verona, Caldic Collection - Rotterdam, Unicredit Art Collection - MART, VAF - Stiftung Collection - MART, Rovereto, Collezione Fondazione Francesco Fabbri - Treviso).

Born in Trento in 1983, after a degree in piano and contemporary music at TEMA Academy in Milan, he began producing videos, sculpures and installations through which he investigates sound elements (music and noise, rythm and silence) while not necessarily including them in the work itself.

He regularly takes part in solo and group exhibitions in Italy and abroad. His works are already included in private and public collections (AGI Collection - Verona, Caldic Collection - Rotterdam, Unicredit Art Collection and VAF - Stiftung Collection - MART, Rovereto, Fondazione Francesco Fabbri Collection, Treviso).
