COMMERCE MOUNATAIN Proposal of A Business Mixed Building Graduation Year Individual Work Instructor. Prof. Li Hui 2017. 9

We used to enjoy the traditional Chinese gardens in Suzhou, such as Zhuo Zheng garden via two dimension plan. However, the designer of Zhuo Zheng Garden, Wen Zhenming (Song dynasty) relied on axonometric drawings to image future programs in this garden, such as the "Thirty-one scene of Zhuo Zheng Garden". There is an interesting phenomenon in China that the repetitive banal super business center have now taken control all over our daily life, especially in China. City should acts like people. Shanghai was a 20 year vigorous girl vs Shuzhou as a old charming lady once upon a time. However, we can no longer distinguish them. Both of the ladies are now dressed with a terrible uniform call consuming flamboyant a fake promising modern life. These projects criticized space of current business-mixed centers and reconsider one new unique possibility that fits Suzhou's local culture. Different types of mountains in Chinese landscape painting and artificial garden are the major observed object. The art connection between painting and architecture design is revived. Thirty-one sences of Zhuo Zhenyuan Wen Zhenming(Song)

CIRCULATION & STRUCTURE STUDY The ancient Chinese painting book "Lin Quan Gao Zhi" mentions that there are three circumstances of mountain , "Far of the mountain", "Height of the mountain" and "Deep of the mountain", which represents the process of enjoying mountains in one painting from low altitude to high altitude.

FACADE STUDY There are 5 unique characters of artificial stone in traditional gardens. There is a relationship between stone’s characteristics and building’s facade.

Beside, various types of mountains form mountain groups, including big mountain, small mountain, far mountain and closed mountain. Floors change into different inclined slopes. Different angled slopes symbolize different sizes of mountains.

ART FACTORY Design of Studio and Exhibition Art Center

Sophomore Design Studio Individual Work Instructor. Prof. Zhang Yi 2015. 4

This site once was a aircraft production factory. It turned into the Shanghai West Bund Art Center in 1990s. This project aims to create another possibility of the site. An art container that can congregate all art, design and fashion festival. This factory impress me with its super structures. An enormous volume created by the sequential steel structure, which is a symbol during the industrial period. The project aims to reconstruct the volume through a second layer of steel to accommodate both the new function and the old symbol.

Finally, I got the highest grade and evaluation in this design studio and obtained the first scholarship and merit student during that year.

Triangle element

There are twenty two supporting frames in this factory. And the major component of this structure is triangle. As we all know that, triangle is the most stable form in architecture design. Therefore, this project aims to extract geometrical pattern from old construction and base on this pattern to create a newsupporting system.

STRUCTURE DIALOGUE

There is a one meter wide corridor between old structure and new steel structure. When people walk through this passage way, they can feel the conversation and power between different structure from various periods.

Joint detail

The new steel structure consists of two strip of steel beams. The interspace of this material creates a feeling of dexterous, which contradicts to the cumbersome feeling of original material.

Cities also die sometime. The growth of a city is similar as the growth of the leaves' vein. Vein consists of cells and cells transport nutrients. City would get "sick" when the veins are clog. This projects aim to explore the growth cycle of a city, the renewal of a city and the boundary of a city. A new type of detachable and mobile construction that represents cells. These construct not only transport people's daily life, space and time, but also, they rekindle wasted areas, replenish infrastructure and redefine boundary of this site.

LINE LANE LAND Renovation of Old Residential Community

Senior Design Studio Individual Work Instructor. Prof. Xu Yuelan 2016. 10

Located at Hong Kou district, Shanghai, the site was occupied by Japan during the second world war for ten years. When they were gone, they left the new urban fabric, a special lane and street system behind. The district later developed into residential area and new problems raised. The street, lane and residential house are too crowed and narrow for dwellers to use nowadays. Different daily objects occupies the public domain like delivery lockers, bicycles, cats' houses, etc. There is no place left for people to carry on their public activities. The aim of this project is not only solving the problems mentioned above, but also renovating the relationship of the neighborhood.

There are six most serious problems in this community: the delivery lockers stand on the lane, the wild cats set up their homes on the wall of lane, the Ofo bicycles are discarded at the corner of lane, no public space for old men to play cheese, no public space for old ladies and

absence of nature green gardens. These photos records the real situation of local people. The curve structural walls can create more useful space than original straight walls.

Archives Tower Archives of Upenn Museum Graduate School Work Individual Work 2018.10.1-2018.12 Instructor:Danielle Willems Awards: Seleced for Pressing Matter Exhibited in Upenn Museum

The main argument of this project is scale of view. To be specific, it will discuss the viewing relationship between exterior and interior experience in this building. There are two challenges existing in this project. Firstly, at the beginning of this project, I notice that the archive inside museum is hard for public to visit, to view the story behind the artifacts. This is the viewing problems inside the building. Secondly, this site is a small garden, which is surrounded by the museum. The high walls limit outside people to understand the world behind the wall. This is another problem outside the building.

3D Print Model

Thus, I just wonder how to extend the view from museum to archives and even make a viewing communication between the downtown sky line and nature world in the university campus. In other words, I would try to break the boundary of museum and archive, the boundary between this project and outside world. Furthermore, the detail connection design which would follow the concept is another important consideration.

KALEIDOSCOPE A Viewing Machine Graduate School Project 2018.8-2018.9 Team Work Team member: Cindy Zheng, Bridget Farley, Kristel Salloum, Yuhao Zhang Instructor: Danielle Willems Award: Exhibited in Upenn Museum

A kaleidoscope is a viewing instrument, reflecting, refracting and fragmenting images. Objects become hard to distinguish as they are broken up into symmet-rical patterns. In this chamber for artifacts the visual effects of a kaleidoscope are materialized into a three-dimensional form that performs differently from a traditional kaleidoscope yet gives the viewer the same sense of disorientation. Modules are radiated symmetrically from a center point and intersected with iridescent and mirror planes, causing light to bounce and refract between modules. Varying densities and angles of linear cladding along the modules also blur the boundaries between modules and creates moirĂŠ effects. These disorientating measures ultimately force the viewer to explore and peer into the model in order to spatially place where the artifacts are located. In effect the chamber becomes a kaleidoscopic viewing machine, allowing the viewer to again experience a playful curiosity similar to a child looking through a toy kaleidoscope for the first time.

BREATHE IN Pop-up Competition Graduated School Project 2019. 1- 2019. 2 Team Work Team Member: Calli Fornia, Joe Mattews, Zhenxiong Yang, Yuhao Zhang Award: The F.Schenk-Henry Gillette Woodman Scholarship, Honorable mentions

This project builds off the concept of transformation and adaptation as a living, breathing entity. There is a lack of space within the residential area of the city for social and leisurely recreation, yet many unoccupied lots, parking lots and empty property that are not being put to use. With this intervention, we provide a chance for interaction and gathering to happen within those spaces and allow an ease of access for other parts of the city not often traveled, thereby increasing the circulation within the city. The geometry of the modules that make up this design, creates an opportunity for a less rigid, and more dynamic structure. The individual modules are made up of a mesh fabric that connects to aluminum flaps, secured by hollow tubes that gather and emit light. The tubes themselves connect to the flaps with light material fasteners to cut down on weight, allowing this piece to be moved from location to location with ease. The fabric and modules are also able to collapse completely flat and be manipulated on a case by case need; whether for a seat, shelter from the elements, or capturing just the right mood of light and shadow for a social-media worthy moment. It can be transported from site to site within all areas of the city, like other parking lots not in use, nestled between two residential areas, or on top of any rooftop in the area that can draw people to it.
