How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye, so hard!

I look at leadership as a calling. My role as a leader, both in the office and in the classroom, over the last 25 years has been an expression of my true self. You cannot wear a mask and pretend to be anyone other than yourself, if you live authentic leadership. I have had to consistently express authority and command, over myself as well as those in my care; children, parents and staff. I have also had to submit to authority and command, from my managers, other principals, business executives and boards. All of this with the intent of contributing to a greater good. I consider this service leadership.

Every person I have encountered on this journey of service leadership has had an impact on my life, and for that I am deeply grateful.

I bid you all farewell and thanks with my last letter as Principal of Tyger Valley College Pre-Preparatory School.

Pre-Preparatory Principal The most remarkable thing about working in a school, is the children. In my 25 years of teaching, I have seen how modern life has changed aspects of children and the way they face the world. At the same time, on many fronts, children essentially have the same needs and wants that they did pre-digital era. It is this conundrum that makes education challenging for many. Sadly the demise of family values and basic manners, in both adults and children is creating a world that is increasingly difficult to navigate.

At our preschool, I believe that we have a good balance between meeting children where they are at; in this I take this opportunity to congratulate Mrs Comins on her conflicted world, whilst instilling good basic teaching appointment and I wish her every success. I have no doubt through love, play and boundaries. If home is an extension that under her leadership, the school will go from strength to of this, then we have found the winning recipe. I feel so blessed to have taught To my eous every one of you. You have brought courag so much joy to my life in so many Cubs different ways. We have had great fun laughing together, playing together, painting together and learning together.

You embraced every new concept and idea with such enthusiasm and you have all achieved so much this year.

It was such a joy to watch you all grow and develop into independent, confident little souls. Opening the doors each morning to welcome your happy, smiling faces was always such a good start to my day! Thank you. You have all blown me away with how much you have learnt and To my grown up this year! And what a year Buzzy we have had! We’ve learnt interesting Bees things, drawn pictures, painted and made things. We’ve counted, added, sorted and patterned. We’ve spoken, sung songs, clapped syllables and played with words.

The children from Melokuhle Day Care Centre spent the day with the Pre Preparatory children.

Our visitors were treated to a Monkeynastix lesson, before spending time in the classrooms. Each child was given playdough and a toothbrush and toothpaste to take home.

It is always a bittersweet occasion as we bid our Grade 0 children farewell. This year, the children performed the Nativity entitled The Bossy King. The words of our much-loved former president, sporting talisman and father of the nation, Mr Nelson Mandela.

Although the Cricket World Cup may have failed to live up to our expectations in the midyear, our Springbok rugby team led by the inspirational Siya Kolisi did not disappoint in late October. As a school we embraced their motto of #Stronger Together and watched in awe as our boys rose to the challenge in defeating England in the final, and brought home the coveted Webb Ellis trophy. South Africa are World Champions for the next four years, and somehow we manage to repeat this feat every twelve years. Our nation’s spirit is lifted, it unites our people and gives us hope for the future.

As the festive season approaches and a welcome holiday lies ahead, I must extend a particular word of thanks on behalf of our community to our teachers and staff, who over the course of the year dedicate their passion and enthusiasm to the growth and development of our children.

To our parent body and our vibrant PEC, thank you for the faith and trust which you put in us as a school and we sincerely appreciate your tremendous support over the course of this year. I would be remiss not to include my wife, Mrs Langley, who provides me with the support, love and encouragement.

Wow! What a year! The 2W class of 2019 will be forever remembered with such joy. Our morning greeting rang through the corridors every day. It made me incredibly happy that you all so readily embraced my Japanese side right from the beginning of the year. It set the tone for our time together – we all grew in acceptance of each othe r and ourselves and embraced what is different abou t us. Every one of you is so special and unique and I have seen you flourish in the sports, academic and cultu ral spheres. As a class you have made me really happ y by doing well academically, behaving well at camp, crea ting gorgeous artworks for Art in the Valley, doing brillia nt speech festival poems, being absolutely awesome on the concert dance stage (when I asked for Footloose enthusiasm or Beat It attitude, you gave that and more and the audience loved you), participating in all the interhouse activities, and joining me on the ice rink.

Thank you for listening when I talked about interestin g science and biology things, for enjoying learning new words like “spindly” and “susurrus”, and for putting in your best this year. You have made me very prou d– sometimes I felt like I was going to cry, you made me so proud! You are all amazing and I love you to bits.

Dear Grade 7R, You were a class of many qualities that I have come to appreciate. 2019 was a year of many first s for me, but the most special first for me was the surprise birthday party. It was a special moment for me that I will cherish forever. Thank you.

It was a wonderful year full of adventures. From the grade 7 camp to the concert. You have worked hard this year and each one of you can be proud of what you have achieved in academics, sport and culture.

Next year you are moving on to the next chapter of your life in high school. It will be a new environment with a lot of new challenges. Just remember, that YOU are capable of overcoming every challenge that you will face in life.

My advice to you as you are going to high school is to do as much as you can. Do not look back one day and think of what could have been. Take chances and do the things that you never thought you would do. But, most importantly, ENJOY it!

Grade 7 Camp The Grade 7s went to Leadership Camp at Sediba Kwele from Sunday 17 March to Wednesday 20 March. The campsite, dormitories and surroundings were exceptional and loads of fun was had by every single Grade 7 pupil. Activities included water activities around the pool, zip-lining across the dam, a water slide, canoeing, a night walk and team building activities.

Pupils thoroughly enjoyed the obstacle course and after a hesitant start totally embraced the mud pool. Pupils were covered in mud and needed serious showers. A fashion show involving recyclable materials certainly was a highlight.

Fashion teams designed feminine outfits for the boys and masculine outfits for the girls.

This resulted in many laughs and some stylish models. Many bonds and friendships were forged at Sediba Kwele and I am sure there will be magic memories to cherish.

Chess and Public Speaking The year began with Tyger Valley College hosting a wonderful chess festival early in February. This was very successful, as several Pretoria schools attended. The children thoroughly enjoyed pitting their skills against some very skilful opponents. In Term 2, the Inter-house chess competition was held with the Eagles being the overall 2019 champions. The children also attended a tournament held at WHPS. This also included an

PRE PARATORY evening of public speaking where children the TVC children received outstanding comments from the adjudicators. In Term 3, Hatfield Christian School invited our Junior Chess Team to a friendly evening of chess. The Grade 3 children were very excited and are now looking forward to perhaps becoming part of the Senior Chess Team next year. The Senior Chess Team was proudly led by our captain, Minh Nguyen, congratulations to him on a very successful year.

Music Department and Valley Voices Choir The Tyger Valley College cultural pillar and music department have continued to grow from strength to strength this year. Not only have the number of pupils registered for private lessons continued to increase, but the choirs and ensembles continue to flourish. We enjoy a fantastic roster of excellent music teachers in our department, who are all practicing musicians.

We are very proud to have them as part of the music department family.

We are also very proud of the increasing number of pupils who are entering for the international music examinations. The results are sure to be excellent, and we look forward to acknowledging the hard work of the pupils when the certificates arrive. The dedication and commitment required on the part of the pupils to enter for these exams is truly commendable as it is a longterm commitment.

The Valley Voices choir continues to fill our hearts with pride as we have filled the choir stand with over 50 pupils this year! We are also thrilled to see more of our boys joining our rank and owning the choir benches. As we sadly bid farewell to our grade 7 choir group and leaders, we rest easy in the confidence of the excellent example

in commitment and leadership they have set for the rest of the choir and the future grade 7’s. We are very excited to see what 2020 holds for our choristers, and look forward to exploring many new stages in the year ahead.

The music department seized the opportunity to perform wherever possible this year, with some of the highlights being the Jacaranda Children’s Choir Winter Concert Series, the Choral Evening hosted at TVC, our own Dance, Drama, and Music Showcases, and of course our much enjoyed Soirées. Our choirs, ensembles, and musicians performed exceptionally well in all of these events, and we could not be more proud of them. We look forward to a new year ahead with fresh ideas that can take performances and events to even greater heights to showcase the wonderful talent we have.

The growth in our department can only be attributed to the dedication, support, and input of the music staff, Tyger Valley College staff and management, and most of all, the pupils and families at Tyger Valley College. We are truly excited for 2020 as we welcome new music staff and pupils to the department. It is a true joy to live and work in a community where the arts and culture is so alive and prevalent. Congratulations to all of our pupils and musicians for the great success of the year!

The Tiny Tygers Once again, it has been an exciting year for the Tiny Tygers. The choir was involved in a few performances throughout 2019, including the Jacaranda Children’s Choir Festival, a choir afternoon at both WHPS and Reddford House, as well as a few home events, held at Tyger Valley College. Each year the Tiny Tygers grows drastically in numbers. In 2019, the choir

reached approximately 100 members. Our team building event, which took place in March, was a real highlight for us. After a morning of rehearsals and hard work, we played a number of teambuilding games which involved a jumping castle, and water balloons being hurled around at one another.

The Royal Strings The Royal Strings have had yet another successful, and productive year. From an ensemble that started with only 4 members, we have now tripled in size.

Art in the Valley 2019 Our 6th Art in the Valley exhibition was held on Tuesday 25th June.

Artworks from each child in the PrePreparatory and Preparatory schools and selected artworks from the High School were displayed.

We invited Senior Preparatory children to exhibit their own private art and some of them exhibited beautiful artworks on the day.

During the morning, each child from Grade

1 to 7 (and some teachers) took part in a fun activity where they tied and dyed their own t-shirt. These colourful t-shirts were worn on Friday 28th June at school.

We would like to thank all the parents who attended our exhibition and made generous donations, which will go towards the development of art at our school.

Sports Report

2019 has proven to be another busy, but exciting year. Our sportsmen and sportswomen certainly worked hard this year and obtained outstanding results as individuals as well as in our team sports.

Cricket This year we saw a number of excellent performances with both bat and ball. In the batting the department we scored 20 fifties and 2 hundreds.

In the bowling department, we had 3 bowlers taking hat-tricks and 4 bowlers getting 5 wicket hauls. Congratulations to Liam Basch on being selected for the U12A Northerns Cricket Team. The U13 A cricketers travelled down for their annual Matt Prior Festival at Uplands College.

This was a great opportunity for our boys to be exposed to some quality cricket, to learn more about cricket, to bond as a team and make some lasting memories. A big thank you to all our staff and coaches for their hard-work, passion and dedication throughout the season. In 2020 we will focus on growing our mini-cricket, implementing a set programme for our mini-cricket to provide the players with the foundational building blocks of the game to better enable them to transition to hard-ball matches, as well as to play more competitive cricket.

Tennis We entered 5 teams into the Gauteng North Tennis League.

Congratulations to our Girls U11 A and Boys U13 A teams for their strong performances throughout the season, with both teams ending 2nd in their respective leagues. Our focus for 2020 will be to better utilize the participation that we see at JP tennis with the aim of strengthening our teams even more, as well as to start a Tennis Academy.

Swimming Under the coaching and guidance of former Olympian, Willie Scheepers, our swimmers have excelled in the swimming pool. Our Championship and Inter-House Galas produced many outstanding individual performances. In 2019, a total of 23 TVC school records were broken. This year was only our second year competing in the A-League Inter-Primary Swimming Gala and also saw TVC as joint hosts of this prestigious gala. Hosting the A-League Gala is a monumental task and we can proudly say that we did this with distinction. Congratulations to Mr Buck and his team on hosting a wonderfully successful A-League Gala.

As can be expected in the A-league, the competition was incredibly tough, however, our swimmers still obtained some exceptional results. Overall, we placed 6th out of 9 schools. Well done to all our swimmers on what was a good result in a highly competitive league and a special congratulations to Caitlin Ruane on winning the Senior Victrix Ludorum!

Our swimmers have undoubtedly put in some hard work over the offseason, which was evident in the results of our 3rd term swimming galas, which is a very promising sign for our 2020 season. We are very proud of all our swimmers and what they have achieved this year. Our focus in 2020 will be to place within the top 5 at the A-League Inter-Primary Swimming Gala.

Soccer Our soccer continues to thrive and produce excellent results. We fielded

PRE PARATORY at total of 8 teams this year (4 U13 teams, 2 U11 teams and 2 U10 teams), of which 7 participated in the FAPPS Challenge Cup (3 U13 team, 2 U11 teams and 2 U10 teams). All our teams advanced to the quarterfinals, with 5 of them advancing to the semi-finals. Of those 5, our U11 A and U13 B teams advanced to the finals. Our U11 A team were most unfortunate to lose in the finals to a goal scored against the run of play, whilst our U13 B team dominated from the beginning and ended up us winners of the U13 B Challenge Cup division.

Our U10 A, U11 A, U13 A and U13 B teams competed at the annual Camp Discovery Tournament. Congratulations to the U11 A team for winning the tournament and our U10A team for winning the Fair Play award. Congratulations to the following players on being being awarded provincial soccer colours: Liam Basch, Thato Manonga and Josh van der Merwe. Cameron Jones and Blake Weedon were also selected for the provincial soccer teams, but were unfortunately unable to attend the provincial weeks. Our focus in 2020 is to continue to grow on the wonderful results our teams have achieved over the past few years.

Netball This year we sent our U12 and U13 players to Camp Discovery. It provided an opportunity for our payers to practice together and build team spirit for the start of the season. The annual TVC Day/Night Netball Festival remains one of the most popular netball festivals in Pretoria, with a number of schools entering this year’s event. Unfortunately, the weather did not play with and the event was rained out shortly after starting. Our focus in 2020 will be to raise the standard of our netball and to give all age groups the opportunity to attend the netball tour.

Hockey All our teams and players excelled on the hockey field this year.

Congratulations to the Boys U11 A team for remaining unbeaten throughout the season and ultimately winning their league. Our Girls U13 A team also experienced a largely successful season, ending 2nd overall in their league. Our Girls U13 A team attended a post season tour to Camp Discovery. This was a great experience for the girls as they were exposed not only to a high level of hockey, but also received some valuable advice and tips from some of the top hockey coaches in the country.

Along with our good results this season, we also had a total of 4 players being selected for the Northerns Blues Hockey teams, namely: Cailyn Jordaan, Fundzi Ntuli, Wayne Kruger, and Tiara Moshupi. Our focus for 2020 will be to increase our hockey participation, especially at SP level, and to have both our Girls and Boys U13A hockey teams going on tour.

Cross-Country Our cross-country season this year was short, but successful, with our athletes producing some truly outstanding results. Our Inter-House continues to serve as a good challenge for most runners, congratulations to the Eagles house for coming out as the eventual winners. We also reintroduced the Cross-Country Rhino Run this year. This was really a successful event, with parents and pupils alike coming out in masses to support and participate on the day. Our focus for 2020 will be to provide

more events for our Cross-Country Athletes to participate in.

Athletics We had very successful athletics season this year, with some excellent results throughout the season. We had an outstanding total of 36 TVC records broken throughout the season this year! Congratulations to the following athletes that were hailed the Victor/Victrix Ladorums at the TVC Athletics Championships: Junior Victrix Ladorum: Shae de Klerk Junior Victor Ladorum: Myles Katzidzira Senior Victrtrix Ladorum: Jordyn Collett Senior Victor Ladorum: Dominique Nzimbela The Prestige Athletics event was unfortunately cancelled this year.

Although we were highly disappointed to hear of the cancellation of this event, we were able to turn it onto a blessing and host a combined track and field event at Tyger Valley. This event was a great success and provided opportunity to many athletes. Our focus for 2020 will be to increase participation and to continue to grow on what has been a very successful 2019 season.

Equestrian Our equestrian team also shone this year and were crowned as winners of the Gauteng North Primary Schools Category D division. Congratulations to the following equestrians on being awarded Gauteng-North colours: Caitlin McGavigan, Jenny Ferreira, Jessica Smith, Mark Ferreira and Natasha Bruce, as well as to the following equestrians on being award both Gauteng-North and Gauteng colours: Arelie Csernus; Aowyn Csernus and Bailey van der Merwe. Our focus for 2020 will be to promote participation in Equestrian.

Inter-House This year we held 10 events to determine the Inter-House Champions for 2018. The Inter-House events have certainly brought a tradition of wonderful spirit and atmosphere to the school. Each house is to be commended for the efforts, however, congratulations must be awarded to the Hawks for winning the overall competition The results were as follows: 1st Hawks – 62 points 2nd Falcons and Eagle – 50 points 4th Kestrels – 48 points 2019 has proven to be a largely successful sporting year. A successful year such as this can only be attributed to the people involved, as such, I would like to thank all the pupils that participated in sport this year for their hard-work, dedication and good sportsmanship, our coaches and staff for their hard-work, commitment and passion throughout the various sporting seasons, as well as the parents, for your loyal support alongside the field and swimming pool.

We as a school have achieved excellent results this year and we look forward to continuing our success in 2020.

Message from the Principal’s Desk When I spoke at our 2018 Academic Awards evening, I anticipated that 2019 would be a year of letting the dust settle after all the building and development that took place that year. I said that we would be using our new facilities to maximum effect in 2019 and that we would be using our time to sharpen our focus on all our various offerings.

Looking back on 2019, I can proudly say that this has been the case.

2019 was a very successful year on the sports fields, with our school producing some outstanding sporting achievements. We also produced a great many provincial sports men and women, across a variety of sporting codes.

On the academic front, our Grade 12 group of 2019 produced outstanding final results and we are rightfully proud of them. Our Grade 12 group achieved a record high distinction per pupil rate and we had the greatest percentage of Grade 12s achieving a Bachelor’s Degree pass in the history of the school. As a school we have come of age. Tyger Valley College has set and established a strong history of academic excellence which can clearly be seen through our track record of Matric results.

While we celebrate another highly successful year, we are always mindful that we cannot afford to stagnate. In his book entitled, Good to Great, Jim Collins says that “Good is the enemy of great”. As a society we have a nasty habit of rewarding mediocrity. Everyone gets a prize, everyone gets a medal so that nobody feels sad or left out.

This is dangerous as we run the risk of settling for good, thinking we have achieved the best we can. This trap permeates every aspect of a person’s life from school, to our career, to our relationships. If we are just good at our job one day we will probably not be fired or retrenched but we will never be promoted.

It is the employee who does not settle for just being good and pushes for greatness that will stand out from the rest. It is this employee who will make their way to the top.

When we think about our relationships, we do not want to settle for good relationships where we are neither happy nor unhappy, just simmering somewhere in between. Great relationships don’t just happen, they are hard work and are the product of two people having a good start and then actively working towards having a great relationship. Just being good at something is not good enough, we have to strive to become great.

Moving from good to great was one of the primary reasons why we, at the high school, increased our academic awards criteria two years ago. We realised that we had to set the bar higher if we were ever going to move from achieving good results to achieving great results. We know we produce really good results, in fact they are bordering on great. But we can’t stop there. Resting on our laurels will only start a downward trend from which it would be difficult (if not impossible) to recover. This is why, each year, we celebrate the fantastic results we produce across the grades. Once the celebrations have died down and the dust has settled, we refocus our efforts and set the bar even higher as we strive to move to even greater heights.

According to an article I recently read on Fin24, China produces 4.3 million engineers every year. In another article highlighting university graduation statistics in China, the incredible growth in the number of engineering students is ascribed to their government’s push to develop a technical workforce that can drive innovation. No doubt this can be achieved if you are introducing 4.3 million engineers into your workforce every year and, as we know, China is one of the world’s greatest drivers of innovation. Their plan of moving from good to great is working.

Although South Africa is a much smaller country than China, we need to set our sights higher and it starts with our schools, and with Tyger Valley College in particular. We must remember that when someone tells us that we are doing good work, understand that good is a good start, but it is

not our final destination.

I conclude with a quote from Jim Collins’ book Good to Great: “Good is the enemy of great. And that is one of the key reasons why we have so little that becomes great. We don't have great schools, principally because we have good schools. We don't have great government, principally because we have good government. Few people attain great lives, in large part because it is just so easy to settle for a good life.”

As a school, we strive for excellence, and excellence is only found in Great. With this in mind we will continue to strive for excellence while enjoying every minute of the journey.

The roar of engines announced the arrival of our first guests of honour, the Class of 2019. The matrics and their partners filed in to experience a true red-carpet event, stunning the crowd of onlookers with their glitz and glamour. Everyone looked stunning! The excitement grew as they got onto the bus to be swept away to their mystery location.

In true fairy tale fashion, they arrived at the stunning Casa Toscana. Great food, music and a fun photo booth rounded out a perfect night that was over way too soon.

TOASTMASTERS The Toastmasters Leadership Course was once again run by the Strelitzia Toastmasters Club #9181 District 74 under the expertise of Robin Lunt and Carolann Louw from the 4th of February to the 11th of March over 6 Monday evenings. The course culminated in a superb Gala Evening on the 18th of March. The group of 13 pupils was predominantly from Grade 10 this year. They ran the entire meeting smoothly, each fulfilling his or her role with dignity. Well done to all who participated. TYGER VALLEY COLLEGE PUBLIC SPEAKING FESTIVAL Tyger Valley College hosted its fourth annual Public Speaking Festival this year and it was a huge success. 60 pupils from 8 schools competed in the festival. The participants delivered well-constructed speeches and enjoyed listening to what their fellow students had to share. Tyger Valley College captured 8 of the 21 prizes, which is almost 40% of the total prizes. MUSIC AT TVC HIGH SCHOOL The ukulele club was a new cultural initiative that started at the beginning of 2019.

The group started with one member and grew to eleven members by the end of the year.

They took part in many events during the year as a group and as individuals, including several assembly performances. Some members busked outside the music class during the High School open day in May. They unfortunately did not go through to the final round, but received an average mark of 75% for their performance, which is quite an achievement since many of the members had only been playing for seven months. The ukulele club also performed during the course of Culture Week at the High School. There was busking during breaks and a lovely group performance at the Art Exhibition.

The 2019 ukulele club’s final performance for the year was at the Ons Herberg old age home. They sang and played Christmas carols with the elderly folk and enjoyed a cup of tea and eats with them.

ART Coming into a new school as a child was always daunting. I worried about what the other kids would think of me. Starting at a new school as teacher was even more daunting as I had parents and fellow teachers to add to the list. But all my worries were allayed. The staff, parents and pupils were welcoming. While the journey wasn’t always smooth and the destination sometimes dipped out of sight, I’m proud of the progress that we’ve made so far and I look forward to many more successful years ahead. A particularly shining moment was when Rachel Van Zyl, head girl and creative tour de force, placed 2nd in the Ubuntu Art Competition, a national art competition hosted by the Horizon Educational Trust.

Rachel’s work will grace the office of Minister of Basic Education, Honourable Angie Motshekga. Enjoy some outstanding pieces from the course of 2019.

BUSINESS STUDIES Banango Traders is a business simulation project that grade 11 and 12 pupils participate in. The simulation is administered by The Johannesburg School of finance and is accredited by the IEB as part of pupils’ SBA portfolio mark.

Pupils account: Banango Traders was a lot of fun. It was really nice to see how my Business Studies and Accounting work could be applied to an actual business idea and how unpredictable business can be such as when we had to predict how many banangos we would sell depending on the weather and therefore how much to spend on advertising. The concept of a virtual business kept the risk low, but we were able to learn how to budget our funds and plan for slow days in the business.

Steam Club

STEAM CLUB 2019 saw the start of our own and very exciting STEAM Club. An initiative to gear our pupils towards the fourth industrial revolution and digital age that we live in. The club focuses on activities and projects that use Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics.

We launched the club with a course on 3D printing and we were blown away by how quickly the pupils learned and excelled in this course.

The second course involved the designing and construction of a well-insulated puppy house to protect the puppy against harsh weather conditions. Pupils scientifically tested different materials to determine their ability to insulate, and then designed and built their houses using materials of their choice to insulate their houses. The houses were tested under heat lamps and the pupils could see first-hand whether their design choices were effective.

We ended the year with a course on Arduinos.

This included some basic programming and coding and some very complicated fine motor skill in building the different circuits.

The success of the STEAM Club has surpassed our expectations and the enthusiasm of the pupils taking part is heartwarming. We look forward to growing this even more under the incredible foresight and enthusiasm of the very creative and talented Ms Van Dyk.

Participation in the Computer Olympiad Talent Search is open to all and it is offered at five levels: • Elementary (grade 5 and below) • Junior (grades 6 and 7) • Intermediate (grades 8 and 9) • Senior (grades 10 and 11) • Elite (grade 12 and above)

The grade 10-12s had many opportunities to showcase their skills in the different programs taught in Computer Application Technology. I was especially impressed with the Grade 10s’ ability to create their own budgets in Microsoft Excel with functions, formulas and graphs. The Grade 11s planned an event and used Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel to display the budget as well as Microsoft Access to filter and manipulate their data.

The Grade 12s used their advanced skills in their proposal for a computer hardware business and used their theory and practical knowledge to plan, manipulate data and come to a conclusion. Well done to all the CAT pupils for their continuous hard work and efforts.

The Talent Search is an excellent opportunity to develop computational thinking. For the grade 9s, it will help with subject choices for grade 10. For the grade 12s it will help with the choice of a career and further studies.

The names of top learners are forwarded to the Department of Science and Technology and to the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation so that qualifying learners can be invited to Science Camps and can be considered for Allan Gray Scholarships.

LIFE ORIENTATION The Grade 11s made laminated posters of letters with picture flashcards and a rhyme to teach the sound of the letters in Setswana and English to take to the Early Learning Centre. We went to The Rock of Ages Early Childhood Development Centre in Kwa-Motla, called the More Loving Early Learning Centre. We spent the morning teaching, playing, planting vegetables in their vegetable garden and moving and expanding their tyre-ring in the playground.

CAREER EXPO This year the annual Career Expo took on a completely different format. We had four presentations in the hall and two sessions of electives. Emma Ford (12A) spoke on preparing for work in the 21st century and what types of jobs will become redundant and which will expand.

She said that it is now estimated that 85% of jobs our current pupils will do, do not yet exist.

She was followed by Chetan Gordhan, a Microsoft AI and data specialist. He spoke about the 4th Industrial Revolution and what it really means. We then broke up into two elective sessions.

There were nine electives to choose from, namely: Software development; Belguim Campus iTversity; IMM Graduate School of Business; Dischem learnerships; Pearson; ETA Sports College; Lisof B Com in Fashion; Entrepreneurship presented

by Patrick Georgiades and Global Education. The last two presentations were again in the hall by Inscape and the University of Pretoria. They explained about SAQA accredited qualifications and the variety of courses private and public tertiary institutions can provide.

SWIMMING REPORT Tyger Valley College enjoyed a very successful swimming season in 2019. Having hosted a series of successful galas at TVC, we were very motivated heading into the C League Inter-High gala.

We performed really well at the C League Inter-High Gala taking home first place. We will thus be swimming in the B League in 2020.

A special mention to Cailtin de Lange, Philip de Lange and Dylan Botha who all took individual awards on the day. We look forward to the swimming season in 2020.

WATERPOLO REPORT Water polo continues to grow and excel and we are incredibly proud of the effort from all the players. The girls have thoroughly enjoyed playing in a weekly social league, which really has improved the quality of Waterpolo at TVC. The highlight of our year was being invited to the Reef Cup Festival in Johannesburg for a second time. We were up against some of the best water polo schools in the country and showed huge improvements from last year. Thank you so much to all the parents who came through to the festival and gave us the much-needed support. It really was appreciated.

The success of water polo throughout the year would not have happened had it not been for the commitment and dedication of Coach James and all the players. We are enormously proud of all the pupils and their improvements throughout the year. Special mention must be made of the following pupils who were selected for provincial teams who played in a tournament in December.

After a very successful tour to the UK, we started the 2019 season with a bang. We are now accustomed to the hectic league schedule brought on by the month of May. When we add the derby days, there is not much time left to think about much else than the next netball match.

In 2019 we managed to send full teams to the district trials for all the age groups. Our girls represented the school well and 6 girls across all the age groups went through to the Tshwane trials. Omphile Phala was selected to go through to the Gauteng-North trials and stood her ground among the best of the best.

We are slowly but surely improving in our league and we are very proud of how far we have come.

The highlight of our season was the double win against Pecanwood College.

We look forward to an exciting season in 2020 and hope to achieve even more.

2019 will go down as the most exciting and rewarding rugby year at TVC to date. A lot of hard work and planning in 2017 and 2018 had finally come together in both the senior and junior age group. A special thanks must go to all the coaches, Mr Fowler, Mr Steyn, Mr Constant and Mr Hendricks, without whom these results would not have been possible.

The junior boys had an amazing season. Results wise, they had a very high success rate of over 90%. In terms of actual rugby development, they are years ahead of previous junior years. With a special bunch of boys, I look forward to seeing them make the step up to senior rugby in 2020. Being knocked out in the final stages of the local Blue Bulls league, they went further than any TVC team before. Keep an eye on this team as they go through the ranks at TVC. The senior boys are probably the most special group of boys I have had the privilege of coaching at TVC. With only a handful of matrics, this relatively young 1st team stepped up massively in 2019, winning several tough matches and giving some bigger schools quite the scare. Having two provincial players in the team, neither of which are in matric, the team does certainly look great for 2020 and I sincerely hope they will continue to build on the success of 2019. The rugby highlight of the year would have to be the home matches against Pecanwood College in the annual Derby Day. It was the first time in our history that we won all the rugby on the same day, with the junior boys putting up a massive score of 53-0 and the 1sts taking their match with a 35-5 win over Pecanwood.

GIRLS’ HOCKEY REPORT It would seem that hockey and training are synonymous. With pre-training we quickly realised that success is what we would strive for in the 2019 season and it was success we achieved. TVC fielded four full teams (U/14, U/15, U/16 and 1st) due to girls hockey experiencing a sudden growth, which contributed to the success of 2019. We participated in Group 5 in the Northerns Structures where we won the group stages and had to play promotion matches against Hoërskool Akasia. All four teams won their matches convincingly and were promoted to the next group.

Three teams also qualified to participate in the knockout rounds in the Noordvaal Competition for Medium Schools League and 1st team represented our province in the Noordvaal tournament. Special mentioned to our three Provincial Hockey Players Nontsikelelo Maminze U/16 A, Atira Moshupi and Abigail Lunga U/14 B who represented our Province at their various age groups at the Interprovincial Tournaments.

To each and every hockey player, thank you for making 2019 another stepping stone towards bettering hockey at Tyger Valley College.

Five weeks at a new school, in a new country, with new friends, teachers and teammates, seemed like a very daunting task. It was, however, the most unforgettable, most rewarding experience of my life.

During my five weeks going to school and playing hockey at St Lawrence College, I faced the unknown, but it made me learn so much about myself. I was exposed to so many different people from all over the world, as well as a school environment that was so different to TVC. I played in teams I wasn’t used to and was coached by coaches who brought a completely different set of skills to the table. This experience forced me to step out of my comfort zone, try new things and make new friends.

It was also an amazing opportunity to be able to live

and go to school in another country. We had so much fun touring England and seeing what the beautiful country has to offer.

One of the most memorable parts of my exchange was the amazing group of friends I made. I met people that I hope to stay in contact with for the rest of my life.

I couldn’t thank St Lawrence enough for giving me the most amazing experience at their school and to Tyger Valley College for sending me on one of the most exciting adventures of my life.

After a long 11 hour flight, we finally arrived to meet the cold grey weather that the UK is so well-known for, proudly wearing our green and gold rugby shirts.

Walking into St Lawrence College for the first time and hearing all the different accents just added to our excitement.

I’ve been at TVC since I was five and I haven’t been a part of any other school before going to SLC. Over the course of the five weeks, it was interesting to see how the two schools are similar in some ways, yet also

differ tremendously. I took subjects which I’ve never been exposed to before, psychology being my favourite.

I played hockey in a team of very talented national players for England and Germany. Playing at such a high level definitely helped me improve as a player.

Towards the end of our stay, we made sure to leave a small bit of TVC behind and taught

the school one of our cheers, shouting loud and proud during assembly. I hope we can bring a little bit of SLC back into TVC. SLC was a life changing experience for me, opening my eyes to many things.

Living in a foreign country is very different to being a tourist.

Above everything, what I’ll remember most about the trip are the people I met and the friends I made from all around the world.

My time at SLC will remain one of my favourite high school memories. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to have had such an amazing experience.

very memorable. Learning in a different school was the most interesting part of my experience, as I discovered how other schools in another country do things and teach. Boarding in a different country was definitely amazing and a good experience to have as a person who has never been to a boarding school before. One thing I loved about the school was its cultural diversity, because the majority of the pupils are not from England and are from other countries such as Ghana, Nigeria, Nepal, Germany and many more. They all come together with their cultures and the unique vibes. By the end of the experience I may have picked up a few phrases from the different languages spoken by them. Going to London was probably the highlight of the

whole adventure.

UK Sports Tour The UK tour was a tour unlike any other. The hockey boys were enriched with many new experiences, on the field and off the field as well. Not only did we improve regarding our level of astro hockey, we also learnt how to communicate effectively and efficiently and actually became a proper team, forming bonds we never thought we could. Our team’s confidence grew and our mental block towards astro hockey became irrelevant.

We cannot attach a physical value to the experiences and different environments we were exposed to while on tour. It was an unbelievable once in a lifetime experience.

I were all looking forward to playing and getting to know a different style of rugby.

We all enjoyed the tough rugby and the friendly opponents. Each one of us was honoured to get the opportunity to learn from this experience. I know we were all grateful towards the school for arranging the tour and towards our parents for financing the trip. On the whole, this trip benefited our rugby careers and gave us a bit of knowledge by showing us a different way of life.

As a Tyger Valley College sportsman, I was privileged enough to be part of the UK Sports Tour 2019.

We departed from O.R. Tambo international airport on the 14th of April. I was filled with tremendous joy and excitement.

After two long flights we finally arrived in Edinburgh, Scotland’s

hilly capital. The weather was unpleasant.

At 10, it had me wondering how I was going to hold my hockey stick without my fingers falling off.

We had 6 hockey sessions over a period of 10 days. This included training sessions with one of the best and most experienced coaches in Scotland. It was a privilege to be in the presence of Scotland’s u/18 women’s team coach.The training sessions were intense, and the weather didn’t make it any better. Our first hockey game took me by surprise as it started raining and the temperature dropped to the point where we had to play with tracksuit jackets on.

Although we lost the match, I gained a lot of experience playing international hockey.

It was challenging for my team, but we all learnt many things. One of the lessons is to never move to Scotland to play hockey unless you don’t want your fingers!

We next went to Manchester where we played one more game. The weather was welcoming to South Africans, so this time we didn’t have an excuse to lose at all.

However, the Manchester hockey players showed me the importance of using your skill to your advantage.

Oxford was by far the best game of the tour, the victory was sweet. We won 4-1 against Thames Hockey Club. The last stop was London, where we had the opportunity play against one of the best clubs. This was an overall delightful experience.

The exposure to top teams that we received during the tour benefited me and helped build my character, as well as giving me memories that we’ll forever cherish.

Eco & Outreach

The children at Boschkop Primary school get a meal at school every day during the term time.

The Springscare community who pack the rice and soya meals sourced and packed enough food for each child at Boschkop Primary to get 7 meal packs (each can feed 6 people) for over the winter holidays. Our Grade 11 pupils helped distribute the food on June 11.

In November, money raised from the Big Walk was used to buy most of the 10 650 sachets of Peanut Paste (Ready to use Therapeutic food for children with severe malnutrition) and some was donated

by Genesis Nutrition, the company that supplied the peanut paste. Collette Fourie and Le Coco Restaurant helped collect over 300 items of non-perishable food.

The food was distributed to the children of Boschkop Primary to ensure that they have some food during the December/ January holiday time. The children were able to get 16 sachets of peanut paste and the bigger children who can carry more were able to get 2 items of non-perishable food.

As a TVC family we raised R 70 458 to help support Cancer survivors and their families and spread awareness about Cancer in the TVC CANSA Shavathon held on the 21st of February this year.

On Friday the 20th of September we supported Sunflower day! Pupils could wear civvies if they were also wearing a 2019 TOPE (Tube of Hope) or they could make a R30 donation. Apart from the money that went via Pick and Pay, R4209.10 went to Sunflower fund directly in support of people with Leukaemia and their families.

We had four blood drives this year.

In total 67 units of blood was donated.

Eco & Outreach

We collected beanies, scarves, gloves and socks, second hand clothing and shoes, and non-perishable food in our Winter Warmers collection. Recipients included the elderly, the homeless, children at the Paul Kruger Children’s home and the non-perishable food went to students at the University of Pretoria.

Some of our Grade 10-12 pupils taught 3 classes of Grade 7 pupils about square and cube roots. Mr Steyn sourced notes and worksheets for us. Our Prep school donated used textbooks. In January we could donate new stationery to 285 Grade 12 pupils at Lesedi High and donated used folders, stationery and textbooks to the school.

From June we started recycling as a school and by the end of November saved 32.9 trees, 7772.04 litres of water and 15 143 hours of electricity. We accumulated 1805.77 credit and used it to buy food for our cats at school.

In a whole school toy round up we collected over 250 soft toys and a variety of general preschool toys like blocks and puzzles. The Pretoria Lions distributed the toys and party packs to 94 children in Lethabong and 74 children at two preschools in Zwavelpoort on Wednesday the 27 November.

Thank you for your kindness in bringing Joy to children around us!

On the 3rd of December the High school ukulele club visited the elderly at Ons Herberg Home to sing carols with the residents. The residents were treated to a special tea and each resident received a packet of rusks.

As a school we are still collecting bread tags and bottle tops A huge thank you to everyone who helped collect bread tags and bottle tops this year!

Since we last sent bread tags in February 2018 we have collected 47.9 kg’s of bread tags so we have 26,1kgs of bread tags to go! Hopefully we will be able to collect them next year!

A huge Thank you to Anton Myburgh and Café Flava for giving 9C, the class who collected the most bread tags in the high school this year a pizza party to encourage bread tag collection!

Please continue to encourage everyone to keep these nasty bits of plastic out of the environment!

On the 5th of December our Grade 12’s donated R4141 worth of medicine and nursing supplies to the Paul Jung Nickle Home to help care for their residents.
