Illinois is proud to host two state fairs each year - one in Du Quoin and one in Springfield. While each is unique, both bring hundreds of thousands of visitors from far and wide to enjoy all that Illinois has to offer.
The 2024 Du Quoin State Fair is its 102nd annual event. The beautiful grounds cover 750 acres including a Grandstand, racetrack, camping sites and so much more. Hundreds of thousands of visitors stream through the iconic main gates each year. The fairgrounds are bustling with activity throughout the year, and this spring, we were honored to host more than 5,000 visitors from around the world to observe the total solar eclipse.
We have invested in significant repairs to the administration building as well as construction of additional permanent pavilion structures for increased rental space. These improvements require tremendous effort from the Illinois Department of Agriculture Buildings and Grounds crew who work year-round to beautify the space from us to enjoy.
While the Du Quoin State Fair is a major economic engine in southern Illinois with an estimated impact of $6 million, it is only one part of what makes our state great. Central to our success is agriculture. It’s our number one industry with more than 27 million acres of land in Illinois dedicated to farms. Agriculture commodities contribute $26 billion to Illinois’ economy. Illinois leads the nation in production of soybeans, horseradish and pumpkins, and our state is second in corn and fourth in pork.
Agriculture is fundamental to Illinois, and I applaud the hardworking men and women who ensure the industry will continue to prosper for generations to come. I also want to acknowledge those who make the Du Quoin State Fair bigger and better each year. This team works diligently to create an enjoyable, affordable and safe experience for all who attend, and I appreciate their efforts.
Thank you for attending the Du Quoin State Fair. We hope you cherish the memories made here, and we look forward to seeing you again next year!
JB Pritzker Governor
MK Pritzker First Lady
It is our pleasure to welcome you to the 2024 Du Quoin State Fair.
These beautiful grounds are a crown jewel in southern Illinois, and we are proud to open our doors to visitors from around the world. To ensure this special space remains viable for generations to come, we continue to invest in revitalization efforts throughout the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds.
In addition to a variety of buildings and grounds upgrades, we have also made significant investments in the environment through numerous conservation projects. We are working diligently to restore and enhance wildlife on the grounds, creating natural habitats and fighting invasive species. Master gardeners are planting pollinator beds using native plants, and we are adding hiking trails through the rolling hills on the grounds.
We are proud residents of southern Illinois, and we have spent many summers at the Du Quoin State Fair with our three children and now a grandchild as well. It holds special meaning for our family, and it’s a privilege to share it with you. We encourage you to take full advantage of all the Du Quoin State Fair has to offer.
Whether you attend a concert or a horse race, ride the Ferris wheel or fill up on fair food, you are sure to find endless opportunities for fun. We hope you enjoy your time here making memories that bring you and your family back each year.
Thank you,
Jerry and Lori Costello

The Du Quoin State Fairgrounds has been “home” to many things . . . many, many events . . . in its 102-year-old lifetime. Huge camping rallies, national car shows and races, horse events of all kinds, rodeos, livestock shows, reunions, motorcycle races, weddings, tractor pulls. You name it, it’s probably been held at the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds. The most popular? By far, the best-known event has been “The Du Quoin State Fair”, now in its 38th year under the ownership of the State of Illinois. It all started back in the spring of 1923 when a group of successful and ambitious Du Quoin business leaders came up with an idea to sponsor an event that hopefully would attract people from all over Southern Illinois. Several owned horses and needed a convenient place for them to compete. Not shy about making big claims, even from the very start, the group called it “The Du Quoin State Fair” because they wanted it to become as nice, as attractive, as well accepted in the area as the Illinois State Fair in Springfield. It didn’t happen overnight. Crowds were somewhat modest in the beginning, in the roaring twenties. Nevertheless the Fair did attract crowds of 50,000 or so, at least as reported by probably biased area sources. Now after reaching the century mark, the Du Quoin State Fair can accurately make many impressive claims. Millions, yes millions, have passed through its gates down through the years as more than an estimated 300,000 do so each year for the Fair itself. For many years -- 1957 through 1980 -- it was “Home of the Hambletonian”, harness racing’s “Kentucky Derby”. Almost equally as important auto racing has been an attraction for years. Other than “Elvis”, Frank Sinatra and Barbra Streisand, one would have difficulty in naming a prominent entertainer who has not appeared on stage at the Du Quoin State Fair. It proudly has become Southern Illinois’ most popular attraction as it has appeal to all ages and fans of all type events. This year’s dates are Aug. 23– Sept. 2.

is an agricultural education exhibit for kids located just outside the Expo Hall. Children (ages 3-10) become farm hands at this free, hands-on exhibit as they are provided the opportunity to experience the agricultural process, beginning at the farm and ending at the market. The children and their families don their work apron and fire up their imaginations to help with farm chores, collect goods to sell at the farmer’s market, and then spend their “earnings” on real products made from the farm at the grocery store.
is a rodeo event which a horse and rider attempt to run a cloverleaf pattern around pre-set barrels in the fastest time. The IBRA continues to promote and encourage barrel racing at horse shows to foster good sportsmanship, and to further spread interest in all barrel racing. is an award-winning and recognized spray paint artist. He presents spray paint art as a “live performance art.” According to Nathan, a picture can best be experienced LIVE in about 5 minutes while playing energetic music. Spray paint is NOT airbrushing. He is known as the “Spray Monay – Rattle Can Ninja of the Midwest” of the spray paint art world. Nathan will be providing 6 daily performances with a free painting to be given away at each performance. He will be located near the Free Entertainment Tent just off Midway Drive.
Parent
is located inside the Free Entertainment Tent. We here at the Du Quoin State Fair realize it’s sometimes necessary to take a quick break from the action, especially if you’re a parent. On the other hand, kids never seem to get tired of the bright lights, thrilling rides and colorful prizes. That’s why this year we’re finding a solution for parents needing a break and kids not wanting the fun to stop. At the Parent Pit Stop everyone will have the opportunity to get out of the heat and have a cold drink. Parents can discuss which attractions to plan for next, while kids stay entertained by the various outdoor toys and games provided inside the tent. Everyone wins at the Parent Pit Stop.
Poppin Penelope’s exhibit starts from nothing and grows into a larger-than-life balloon wonderland. Penelope will begin on Sunday, August 25 during the Veteran’s Day festivities with stilt-walking and giving away patriotic balloons. She will then return each day to build her balloon utopia. Her exhibit defies logic, as one incredible woman creates a balloon presentation larger than what an entire crew could accomplish in the same amount of time. Make sure to visit the Expo Hall to see what has been sprouted overnight.
The Rusty Truck Vintage Market… consists of a group of local small businesses that will have their unique items available for purchase. Craft boutiques, handmade signs, tumblers, food, freeze-dried candy, soaps and candles, just to name a few, will be available for your viewing. The “vintage market” will be located at the 1st and 2nd Heat buildings on Friday, August 23 from 5 – 10 pm; Saturday, August 24 from 2 – 10 pm; and Sunday, August 25 from 2 – 10 pm. Don’t miss out on these 3 days to help support local small businesses. You never know what treasure you might find!
Ski / Alumni Ski Show… will be Saturday, August 31. They will be providing a ski show throughout the day on the big lake near the Expo Hall. Plan on relaxing and watching them perform their outstanding skiing abilities on that day.
Zoo… is family-owned and provides the public with an opportunity to interact with a variety of animals in a safe, educational environment. The interactive area allows you to meet some wonderful farm animals. Feed is available to purchase. Pony rides are also available for our youngest fairgoers to enjoy. This complete petting zoo is fun for the entire family. Show-Me Safari is located on Expo Drive and will open at 4:00 pm daily and 12 Noon on weekends.
Safari’s Pig Races… have proven to be an excellent crowd-pleasing entertainment with a touch of class. Both children and adults love to see these little “hams” race to the finish line. The audience is entertained and enthused through the provided comedy and audience participation. Check out their race times at their location on Expo Drive.
Whippoorwill Rodeo… has more than 25 years of rodeo experience on both sides of the arena as rodeo contestants, stock contractors and rodeo producers. Their mission is to keep the legacy of America’s original extreme sport alive for generations to come – while preserving the values of our Western heritage and the cowboy way of life. At Whippoorwill Rodeo it is not just their passion but a way of life. The True American Cowboy Tour Finale will take place on Saturday, August 24 and Sunday, August 25 at 6:00 pm in the covered horse arena. Come watch them continue to live out their dream.
