MISSION STATEMENT Jackson Preparatory School inspires and challenges students toward academic, athletic, and artistic excellence, instills personal integrity through biblical values, and equips students to pursue lives of distinction in service to society.

FACULTY The Prep faculty is comprised of 85 dedicated and experienced professionals, including 44 (52%) who have earned postgraduate degrees. Six faculty members hold doctoral degrees.

COVID-19 In response to the coronavirus outbreak and subsequent school closures, Jackson Prep engaged in several days of intense professional development when faculty and staff returned from spring break on Monday, March 14, 2020. Our professional development focused on pivoting to remote learning using the Google Education suite of products, specifically the videoconferencing platform “Google Meet.” Students did not return to campus following spring break, and we began remote classes on March 18. For the remaining nine weeks of the spring semester, teachers and students followed an abbreviated daily schedule (8:15-12:30) in which all scheduled classes for each day met virtually via video conference. Our efforts focused on synchronous learning as we attempted to replicate, as much as possible, the typical rhythm of our school’s daily schedule. Because we were able to maintain, to a great extent, our academic expectations and daily engagement with students, Jackson Prep awarded numerical grades for the fourth term. We canceled final exams for all students, though 100% of students enrolled in Advanced Placement (AP) courses took the modified, at-home versions of the AP Exams. In keeping with quarantine procedures in our state, all extracurricular activities, including clubs and sports, were canceled for the remainder of the school year.

Jackson Prep’s leadership team spent the summer developing protocols in consultation with the Mississippi Department of Health and CDC guidelines to allow a safe return to school. In-person classes resumed on Tuesday, August 11, with the school operating under a set of safety measures known as the “JP Revised Plan.” Our health and safety precautions include, but are not limited to: requiring masks for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors inside school buildings; retrofitting our HVAC units with a bipolar ionization air filtration system; limiting student access to buildings to class times only; and preparing box lunches to minimize wait times in the cafeteria and encourage social distancing. Under the “Revised Plan,” parents who do not feel comfortable with their students attending school on campus may elect for their students to participate in live classes remotely. Jackson Prep remains committed to continuously evaluating the COVID-19 threat to our community and has prepared thorough contingency plans for both hybrid and remote learning for the entire student body if such measures become necessary.

Curriculum Jackson Prep’s primary mission is to prepare students for college. Therefore, the curriculum is challenging and broad, emphasizing a liberal arts and sciences education.

The school year is divided into four nine-week reporting periods. A six-week summer session is offered for additional credit. AP and Honors programs are offered in mathematics, science, English, social studies, world languages, and studio art. Classes meet on a rotating seven-period schedule.

Because of the school’s selective admission policy and the strong competitive performance of its students, Jackson Prep does not rank students except for designation of valedictorian and salutatorian at graduation.

GRADE POINT AVERAGE Jackson Prep reports numerical grades on the transcript for each course. The cumulative GPA is based on final grades earned in all courses for credit in grades 9-12 at Jackson Prep. Individual subject grades shown on the transcript are not weighted. Weight of 5 points is added for the cumulative GPA calculation for all Honors courses and a weight of 7.5 points is added for AP courses. In computing GPA, grades in courses taken at other schools are not considered.

CLASSICAL HERITAGE PROGRAM The Classical Heritage program offers students the opportunity to focus on the language and culture of the Greco-Roman civilization. To receive a diploma with an emphasis in Classical Studies, a student must complete at least six courses in Latin, Greek, and classical civilization.

CHRISTIAN STUDIES PROGRAM The Christian Studies program educates students on the intellectual foundations of Christianity. To receive a diploma with an emphasis in Christian Studies, a student must earn two full credits in the Christian Studies course offerings.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT Jackson Prep requires all students enrolled in AP courses to take the corresponding examination. In May 2020, students took 260 exams in 18 subject areas.
