MARISSA RILEY STARR

GPA: 4.35 – ACT: 30

From her speech: Setting high expectations has been a cornerstone of our education here at Cathedral. Our teachers have pushed us to excel academically, spiritually and morally, inspiring us to become the best versions of ourselves. Through our education, we have been given the tools necessary to continue on this journey. High expectations are like our own personal compass. They guide us, motivate us, and help us navigate the ups and downs of life. They challenge us to strive for excellence, even when the road ahead seems daunting. Setting high expectations means having the audacity to dream big, to believe in ourselves and to be unafraid of failure. After all, as the saying goes, "Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars."

Church: Our Lady of Lourdes, Vidalia, Louisiana

Favorite service project: My favorite service project was the coat drive for the National Honor Society. It was a thrill to see how happy people in need were to choose coats from the piles. Some even took whole bags with them. I got to enjoy the experience of helping others with my friends, which made the project that much better. It was a wonderful way to bring the Society together to benefit the community.

From his speech: I believe that the class of 2023 has achieved these requirements to be considered winners. Though only one of us can be ranked first in our class, we are all winners tonight. Whether you are standing here to give a speech or simply watching me nervously stumble on my words, we will all leave here with a diploma. That is something that we should all be proud of. With that being said, I want to congratulate you all for working tirelessly to get here and for all of the accom-

plishments you have achieved. I also want to thank all of our friends, family and faculty because we could not have done any of it without them.

We must also thank God for getting us here today. Cathedral has instilled each of us with a firm faith that should be a guiding light in all we do.

As we move on to the next stages of our lives, let us remember all of the memories we have made and the lessons that we have learned. I know that in all we set out to do, our class will always be winners!

VALEDICTORIAN: MARY LEE TOPIK

AVERAGE: 4.306 – ACT: 33

From her speech: Our efforts have led us to this ending, our graduation from high school, and it can be bittersweet to leave behind a place you’ve spent countless hours in, willingly or not. We must remember that we close the door on high school, not to walk away from this chapter of our lives, but to grow even further into the best version of ourselves.

Endings facilitate new beginnings, so this graduation isn’t truly the end of our education, even if some of us wish it were so. This end creates a new beginning to explore ourselves in new environments, deepen our knowledge and spiritual life,

and broaden our understanding of the worlds we hope to enter.

I would encourage all of you to take advantage of this new beginning to get to know yourself better, try new things and be open to new friendships. We cherish the experiences of high school, but know that there is something bigger and better out there for us. We just have to have courage to find our place in this next part of our journey.

SALUTATORIAN: LAUREN NICOLE ABADIE

AVERAGE: 4.258 – ACT: 31

From her speech: After learning I was the salutatorian last Thursday and that I needed to write a speech by Monday, I put off writing until 10 p.m. Sunday because I didn’t know how to start or what to even talk about. Then it hit me. Maybe I should talk about procrastination and punctuality.

I found three reasons why being on time is important, whether it be completing an assignment or just getting to class. First, it shows respect for your teachers, employers, and even friends. You want them to know that you're dedicated, that you appreciate their efforts, and that their time is important. Second, being punctual reduces stress. I can vouch for this one. I’ve stressed for about a week about this speech, and I wish I started working on it sooner. Lastly, your reputation is at stake. If you’re always showing up late or missing deadlines, you start to look sloppy, and it seems that you can’t be

bothered to make an effort.

Now, I know what some of y'all are thinking, "What authority does she have speaking to me about time management when I see her pulling into the school parking lot at 7:59 a.m. or doing her homework the class before its due?" or as Coach Poe once asked, "How is it you live five minutes away from the school and still show up late?” I don’t have a good answer to those questions, but for future reference, the front office only allows one excuse for “car trouble.”

GPA: 4.2273 – ACT: 25

From her speech: We are here today to celebrate our triumph, the accomplishment of graduating. But let us also celebrate the joy and laughter, the pain and tears, and all the other experiences we have shared along the way. Let us revel in the beauty that was high school and prepare ourselves for the wonders ahead in college, the military and the workforce.

Let us say thank you to our marvelous families, who have had nothing but love for each of us since our very beginning. Thank you to our wonderful friends who have become some of the best support systems possible. And thank you to our phenomenal teaching and office staff, who have held our best interests close to their hearts.

"Family of 2023," as we depart from this place, I have one final thing to say to you. This world will test you, and it will try to conform you to its ways. Don't let it. 1 Timothy 4:12 reads "Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.”

No matter where you are, or what you are doing, someone is always watching

you. Each one of us possesses a quality that someone can learn from. I challenge each of you to remain true to yourselves, and let God shine brightly through you.

SALUTATORIAN: ALLYSON GLYNN MOSS

GPA: 4.1692 – ACT: 26

From her speech: We cannot be spectators to our own life, God gave us this life, and from this point on we have the freedom to follow him in his glory to have eternal life, to correctly use the cards we were given. ... We will forever remember our days playing on the playground at the old Lourdes, where multiple times a week the principal would have to talk to the boys about roughhousing. Or the days when ignorance was bliss. ... But that wasn’t living. We got a chance to live, a chance to change and to grow into the person God wants us to be, into a person that ourselves now will be happy to meet in the future. We can’t fold and look on from the outside, no matter how easy that seems. My grandfather realized that, our parents realized that now it is time for us to realize that giving up is not an option and acting like something we aren’t is not an option. We can no longer be ignorant, we have to face this world full force. But, we have an advantage. We grew up knowing God’s love, we grew up knowing the power he holds in this world, and no matter how young we

were, we felt his love and his power, and no matter how old we get, ... his love will be there to guide us.

Now, class of 2023, my final note to you, is that wherever you are, no matter how much we’ve changed, whether we look the same or act different, we have a home within our class. We have memories, we have a kinship, we have love. Don’t forget us, don’t forget what we had during our time together, we’ve had a long journey, but now it is time to take a step in our own directions, where we can be free to follow God and live accordingly.

Favorite service project: I really enjoy working at St. Vincent de Paul. I didn’t do it often, but this past year I was able to a few times and being part of the St. Joseph Parish in Greenville meant I knew a lot of the people working there and it was really great to work closely with people I go to Mass with on a weekly basis.

From her speech: Mr. Blanche has a saying, “See the bagel.” It means to focus on the rewards of your efforts over the struggles of getting there. High school is hard. There’s always so many commitments to juggle on top of school work and maybe even a social life, and that’s not even counting all the crazy unexpected stuff like pandemics. But we got through it. ... Not only did we survive individually, we lifted each other up as a class. I would not have made it through without your support. I am so glad to be a part of the class of 2023, and I cannot imagine a better group of people to have grown up with. Thank you for always being kind, funny, hardworking, friendly, supportive and just overall amazing.

From her speech: Now the time has come for us to ponder on what comes next. Our future is up to each one of us. We choose whether we want to take the easy path or the difficult one. ... At St. Aloysius High School, we learn the foundation. It is up to us to build upon those roots in college. As students ride the high school portion of the roller coaster, we sometimes lose sight of the big picture – our happiness and future. It is imperative that we understand the lessons we learned here will guide us to success. ... Some of the most important things we learned in high school were things we did not even learn in the classroom, such as the knowledge of patience, loyalty, honesty, and even cheese touch. Truthfully, the most crucial part of education comes next. It doesn't just end here today.

Favorite service project: My favorite service project is the United Way trunk or treat. Around Halloween, volunteers get to set up booths or cars with Halloween decorations on them and hand out candy to children
