2017 ROSTER AND COACHES

2017 TEAM PREVIEW

6 | 2017 JACKRABBIT SOCCER HISTORY AND RECORD BOOK

Fresh off its third consecutive Summit League Tournament title and NCAA Tournament appearance, the South Dakota State Jackrabbit soccer team is full of new faces with the same goal as previous years: build a team capable of achieving big things. The 2016 team graduated eight seniors and saw the departure of 16-year head coach Lang Wedemeyer, but is reloaded with talent and high hopes as the 2017 campaign begins a new era under head coach Brock Thompson. Goalkeepers After splitting time in net last season, Maggie Smithers steps into the role of full-time starter after enjoying a redshirt freshman season for the ages. Smithers logged over 1,000 minutes between the pipes and allowed just four goals for a school record 0.34 goals against average. Beyond that, Smithers with 7-2-4 on the year with shutouts in the Summit League final and NCAA Tournament first round game. Taylor Lock comes to the Jacks as the freshman goalkeeper of the 2017 signing class, graduating from Lakeville North High School (Lakeville, Minnesota) as the Minnesota State High School League record holder in career shutouts (20). Defenders Sophomore Alexa Hepner enters the season as the most experienced defender for the Jacks, playing all but 61 available minutes on the back line for SDSU last season. Hepner set the school’s single season record with over 1,970 minutes played and was part of a defensive unit that allowed just 15 goals on the year with 10 shutouts. Juniors Annie Williams and Kyli Nelson split their time throughout the field last year, but enter 2017 as upperclassman defenders alongside fellow junior Kelsi Wipf. Williams started eight games and logged 1,261 minutes in the field, recording an assist and 21 shots. Nelson started 19 games, mostly in the midfield, and played 1,480 minutes with six points (two goals, two assists), including a game-winner against North Dakota in nonconference play. Wipf made four appearances last season and will compete for playing time this year. Freshmen Molly Ballinger (Lakewood, Colorado) and Kaitlin Zabel (Lakeville, Minnesota) close out the defender ranks as newcomers with high expectations. Zabel was a three-time All-Conference selection in high school (with All-State honors as a junior) while Ballinger ranked as the No. 8 prospect in Colorado entering her senior season. Midfielders The largest position group on the Jacks this season, eight returners blend with a pair of newcomers in the midfield. Seniors Tori Poole, Jennie Scislow and Julia Lam lead the group and look to build on successful 2016 seasons. Poole became a three-time All-Summit

League First Team selection after scoring six goals in over 1,600 minutes played last year. Scislow started 16 games and scored twice while Lam had six starts, 21 appearances and an assist. The remainder of the returners saw time as reserves in 2016 and will aim to break into the lineup on a more consistent basis this year. Junior Madison Chapman appeared in six and 10 matches, respectively, and sophomore Carina McLennan appeared in 20 games and broke into the starting lineup for the two Summit League Tournament games. She scored her first career goal last season. Fellow sophomores Darien Poelstra (16 appearances) and Shayna Stubbs (11 appearances) recorded points for the Jacks, as Poelstra netted two goals on seven shots and Stubbs had one goal. Allie Zueger and Stephanie Dashiell are incoming freshmen for 2017 and bring solid backgrounds to the group. Zueger scored 19 goals and assisted in 30 scores in her career at Aberdeen Central High School (Aberdeen, South Dakota) while Dashiell (Papillion, Nebraska) fought back from an injury that cut her junior season short for a successful 2017 campaign. Forwards With just three returners in the group, a number of new faces will join the forward pitch in 2017. Nicole Hatcher turned in a standout season in 2016 where she earned All-Summit League First Team honors with 22 points (six goals, 10 assists) for the No. 2 spot on SDSU’s single season assists record list. The Sioux Falls, South Dakota native had four game-winners, and tallied points in a school-record seven consecutive games. Bianca Madonia started the first game of the season and appeared in 14 additional contests for the Jacks last season, firing one shot. Hannah Evans transferred in from South Alabama for the 2016 season and played in 15 matches with a goal. Leah Manuleleua (Manteca, California) joins the Jackrabbits after a season at San Joaquin Delta College where she scored 21 goals and added 21 assists over 23 games. Prior to junior college, Manuleleua left Manteca High School as the all-time leader in career goals (116). Three freshmen join the corps, as Marisa Schulz, Eleanor Dick and Rachel Hewitt are new to the program. Schulz is a speedster from Dakota Dunes, South Dakota, where she played club ball with TriState Revolution and Dakota Alliance while claiming three medals in state cross country and 10 medals in state track and field through her career. Dick (Harrisonville, Mo.) was a four-time All-Conference First Team and All-Conference Academic First Team selection, earning All-State honors in her final three seasons. Hewitt (Woodbury, Minn.) sat out her junior season and the first half of her senior year due to injury, but came back strong and led the team wtih five goals and three assists to earn MVP honors in 2016.

COACHING HISTORY The Jackrabbit soccer program has had just two head coaches over its 17-year history, with Lang Wedemeyer taking the reigns February 15, 2000 to build a program from the ground up. Approximately 55 percent of SDSU students are residents of South Dakota, 37 percent are from other states and 8 percent from other countries. The university provides a rich academic experience in an environment of inclusion and access through inspired, student-centered education, creative activities and research, innovation and engagement. SDSU grants degrees from the colleges of Agriculture and Biological Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Education and Human Sciences, Nursing, Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions, the Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering and the Graduate School. The American Association of University Professors categorizes SDSU as a Category 1 or doctoral-level institution. The university has been designated an Innovation and Economic Prosperity University by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities and its Commission on Innovation, Competitiveness and Economic Prosperity is a major resource for the economic development needs of the state. The Office of Technology Transfer and Commercialization, which assists the university’s researchers in commercializing intellectual properties and fosters collaborations between the university and industry partners, has generated nearly $16 million in royalties and license fees since being formed. In the 2017 fiscal year alone, there were 45 invention disclosures, seven patent applications, five patents issued and six licenses. Overall, the office has overseen 432 invention disclosures, 141 patent applications, 31 patents issued and 73 licenses. SDSU Extension, with eight Regional Extension Centers across the state, is South Dakota’s source for objective, vetted and relevant new knowledge generated through research. Extension’s online learning portal, iGrow.org, served more than 750,000 users with nearly 1.1 million page views last year.

STATE UNIVERSITY Legend of the Jackrabbit

There are two theories as to how and why the Jackrabbit nickname evolved. The most common belief is that the name “Jackrabbits” came from a story and cartoon sketch that appeared in a Minneapolis newspaper following a 1905 football game between the University of Minnesota and South Dakota State College, as the university was then known. A reporter for the newspaper, knowing of the preponderance of jackrabbits in the Brookings area, was believed to have written that the SDSC team was as quick as jackrabbits. Many people believe that the school adopted the Jackrabbits as its official nickname from that beginning. The other theory about the origin of the nickname is given in The Jackrabbit, SDSU’s yearbook. There is a poem in the 1907 yearbook that puts forth the idea that the yearbook is called The Jackrabbit because a group of juniors wished to immortalize themselves by changing the name of the yearbook. Athletic teams followed suit, adopting the nickname. Prior to the adoption of the Jackrabbit nickname, school athletic teams were known as the Barn Yard Cadets as SDSU was known as South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1907.

Dunn was named the 20th president of South Dakota State University in April 2016, the fourth alumnus chosen to lead the institution. He took office in May 2016. Dunn received a bachelor’s degree in biology at SDSU in 1975 and subsequently completed two graduate degrees in animal science—a master’s in 1977 and a Ph.D. in 2000—at the Brookings campus. He became the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council endowed dean of the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences in 2010. He also served as director of SDSU Extension and as a professor of animal science. As dean, Dunn led a college with some 550 faculty and staff, 2,800 graduate and undergraduate students, and a $78 million annual budget, including more than $20 million in grant and contract awards, fundraising and development. He shaped the academic and strategic direction of eight departments, spanning 18 degree programs, one regional research and outreach center, six research field stations and 14,500 acres of Agricultural Experiment Station research land. As Extension director, Dunn administered and set the vision for five program areas across two colleges and nine departments, as well as eight

Justin Sell Athletic Director

34 | 2017 JACKRABBIT SOCCER HISTORY AND RECORD BOOK

Bowling Green University, ‘91 Justin Sell joined the Jackrabbit staff May 7, 2009, as the 12th director of athletics at South Dakota State University. Sell oversees the Jackrabbits’ 21-sport Division I athletics program. Eighteen SDSU teams compete in The Summit League, while football competes in the Missouri Valley Football Conference of the Football Championship Subdivision and wrestling competes as a member of the Big 12 Conference. Equestrian competes under the umbrella of the National Collegiate Equestrian Association. Under Sell’s leadership, SDSU athletics continues to make strides in athletic competition, in the classroom, in fundraising and in reconnecting with alumni. Athletically, the Jackrabbits claimed 27 regular and postseason league championships in six different sports since 2009-10. That broad-based success has led SDSU to claim The Summit League Commissioner’s Cup allsports trophy four times (2010-11, 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15, 201516), along with winning both The Summit League’s Dr. William Steinbrecher Men’s All-Sports Award and Dr. Helen Smiley Women’s All-Sports Award during the 2013-14 season. SDSU also claimed the Steinbrecher award during the 2012-13 and 2015-16 seasons and earned the league’s Sportsmanship Award, an award voted upon by its peers, during the 201011 campaign. In the classroom, Jackrabbit student-athletes continually post a GPA of 3.2-or-higher in more than 70 different majors, which led SDSU to winning The Summit League’s Institutional Academic Achievement Award for the 2009-10 and 2012-13 academic years and the Missouri Valley Football Conference Academic Award in all eight years in the league (2008-15). In January 2011, Sell announced a partnership with Learfield Sports, signing a 10-year deal worth $13 million for SDSU athletics. Learfield

regional extension centers with a $12 million annual budget. He led a team of some 150 faculty and staff members and 3,500 adult volunteers. Prior to that, Dunn spent six years at Texas A&M University-Kingsville from 2004 to 2010, as executive director of the King Ranch Institute for Range Management. He first worked in Brookings as an Extension livestock specialist and as an assistant professor in SDSU’s Department of Animal and Range Science from 1997 to 2004. From 1979 to 1996, Dunn was a successful rancher, managing his family’s cattle ranch in Mission. In 2015, he was appointed to the South Dakota Habitat Conservation Fund by Gov. Dennis Daugaard, and to the Governor’s Pheasant Work Group in 2014. He served as an ex officio member of the ag advisory board for the First Dakota National Bank, Yankton from 2011 to 2016, and was a member of the board of directors for Padlock Ranch, Dayton, Wyoming, from 2009 to 2016. Dunn has a rich academic background, was a successful rancher and farm operator and is a published author and researcher. He is a nationally recognized expert in beef production and ranching systems, and is a member of several professional organizations, including the Society for Range Management, the American Society of Animal Science, and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association. He has a deep historical and cultural knowledge of South Dakota and South Dakota State University, and strong, statewide relationships with industry influencers and stakeholders, including government officials, business leaders, university administration, faculty and staff. He lives with his wife, Jane Dunn, on her family’s original homestead north of Brookings, where they raised their two sons, Thomas and Michael. Sports quickly established a Brookings-based entity known as “Jackrabbit Sports Properties” that directs all aspects of the partnership, including managing and selling multimedia and sponsorship rights for South Dakota State Athletics. In addition to the deal with Learfield Sports, Sell directed the implementation of the Letterwinners Club, which provides opportunities for Jackrabbit Athletics to reconnect and stay connected with former studentathletes, while supporting current student-athletes at South Dakota State. In the years to come, Sell wants to continue reconnecting with former Jackrabbit student-athletes and enhancing the athletic facilities while still maintaining success, both in competition, but more importantly, in the classroom. On the facilities front, Sell oversaw the completion of the Dykhouse Student-Athlete Center in 2010, and developed the 2025 SDSU Athletic Facilities Master Plan. Additionally, Sell spearheaded efforts to add permanent seating and a press box at Erv Huether Field, chairback seating in both Frost Arena and Coughlin-Alumni Stadium. Construction of the indoor facility—the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex—began in August 2013, and finished in the fall of 2014. Lead gifts totaling $12.5 million toward the construction of the new Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium, with seating up to 20,000 were received in October 2013. The project began in the fall of 2014, with completion set for the summer of 2016. In total, Sell spearheaded the fundraising efforts to raise more than $57 million in private donations since Aug. 1, 2012, for the Sanford-Jackrabbit Complex and Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium. Born in Salem, Ore., and raised in Columbus, Ohio, Sell came to South Dakota State from the University of Northern Iowa, where he worked in various roles, both at the university and in the community for 10 years. He also worked at Villanova University, Syracuse University, The Ohio State University and Bowling Green State University. Sell gained further experience working in the private sector for various sports teams and events. Sell earned his bachelor’s degree in sport management from Bowling Green State University (Ohio) in 1991 and completed a master’s degree in physical education/sport administration at The Ohio State University in 1992. Sell and his wife, Jennie, have four children: Abbie, Zach, Josh and Eric.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE JACKRABBITS: Please call us South Dakota State or SDSU. Please do not call us San Diego State, SDST or SDS, and please, never call us South Dakota. What’s the difference? Great Question. Calling us “South Dakota” is like calling Illinois State, “Illinois,” or Ohio State, “Ohio.” Again, calling South Dakota State “San Diego State” is just not cool, so please don’t do it.

Also, Jackrabbits is one word, not Jack Rabbits or JackRabbits. Our jackrabbit mascot is modeled after a real species of rabbit, not a rabbit named Jack.Technically speaking, a jackrabbit is a hare, but let’s not get technical. Calling us the Jacks is an acceptable second reference.
