More than 2,000 people are employees of SDSU, making it the largest employer in Brookings.

SDSU has grown from 80 acres at its founding in 1881 to a 422-acre campus with facilities valued at more than $381 million. The university owns or leases another 15,000 acres of land for research throughout the state.
South Dakota State University is the state’s Morrill Act land-grant university and its largest, most comprehensive institution of higher education. It has an enrollment of 12,589 students (fall 2015) from all 50 states and 79 countries who can choose from more than 195 majors, minors and specializations. SDSU also offers 29 master’s degree programs, 15 Ph.D. and two professional programs.
