Construction & Structures ARCH1162 was an introduction to architectural construction and structures and its historical significance. It also introduced different types of building techniques, materials and technologies in mostly domestic environments. In this foundational course I also was introduction to engineering concepts, these included the calculation of bending moments in beams and also detail modelling.

In design studio 2 we looked at one particular site for the entire term, each assignment/submission built upon the previous one. The first submission required us to design a kiosk/cafe in this SITE particularPLAN location. The site was the National Art School se we needed to be able to design to the needs of the students at the school. The following submission was a bike workshop thatSCALE required underground exavation. The final submission was a ensemble of the preivous design + a gallerytower space.

‘Butterfly Promanade’ Cafe + Workshop + Gallery Tower Course: ARCH 1102 Studio Mark Recieved: 85% (High-distinction)

The main feature of this design is the large skylight at the meeting piont of the roof and wall. This provides a large amount of light into the auditorium and gallery spaces.

In section view the human figures demonstrate the different uses of spaces within this design. In particular the main auditorium room is displayed, it allows oberservers not just to listen but also to think and meditate.

The butterfly roof design is also clearly shown in section. This roof feature along with others, such as, the lightweight coloumns, were inspired by Glen Murcutt designs and ideologies.

Design Studio 3 Design studio 3 worked very closely with ARCH 2170 (BIM - Revit Course). The design brief required a low-carbon terrace house for two residences. In my case, I designed for a young family of four and a professional working couple. Many different design techniques were learnt throughout this course. Prior to this studio I hadn’t had any experience designing a terrace house so this process was challenging.
