Highlights from Headquarters

There is some good news, and there is some bad news. Bad news first: it’s summer. While in days of old, Texas would gently move into warmer and warmer weather, we now blast into the heat in late May and Mother Nature presses hard on the gas pedal usually through early September. Now the good news: it’s an Olympic summer! Just when you think there are no sports to watch (in your air-conditioned house) because you are between seasons, here comes a month of Olympics!

And even if watching the Olympics doesn’t float your boat, it does float a lot of people’s boats. That’s why PERC has targeted the event with a huge consumer education campaign.

For Texas propane company owners and managers, PERC’s national campaign presents a significant opportunity. The increased visibility of propane will undoubtedly generate consumer interest, and PERC encourages Texas propane companies to be prepared to capitalize on this momentum.

ProCOT will additionally be building on the education campaign, using a 2-for-1 match with PERC for every ad dollar invested. It’s a great investment! Texas consumers will be hearing about propane’s reliability and efficiency in powering homes, businesses and communities.

Be sure to put the Crossroads Propane Expo + Conference on your calendar for August 1-3. We’ll be in the DFW Marriott Allen Convention Center, and there’s something fun for your entire family. We know you’ll find the event will be good for both your business and your mental health. Come play and learn with other propane professionals.

Last, read about two entrepreneurs on Lake Conroe who customized a pontoon boat into an Ice Cream Boat this past winter. They are using propane to keep their ice cream coolers running. If you ever find yourself out on Lake Conroe, check out www.conroeicecreamboat.com for their schedule and even a boat tracker if you want to go find them.

PERC’s 2024 Consumer Education to Reach Millions

The Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) is launching a multi-faceted campaign to educate homeowners across the nation about the many benefits of propane. This strategic initiative comes at a crucial time, as the conversation around electrification heats up and consumers are bombarded with messages about alternative energy sources. PERC’s campaign aims to cut through the noise and remind Americans that propane offers a reliable, efficient and versatile option to power their homes.

Beyond the Big Screen: A Multi-Channel Approach

“Consumers are inundated with messages these days,” said Erin Hatcher, Senior Vice President of Communications and Marketing at PERC, “and we want to make sure that propane’s voice is heard loud and clear. By leveraging Connected TV and YouTube, we can target our message to the exact audience we want to reach, ensuring that homeowners across the country understand the many

PERC’s campaign extends far beyond the realm of television. Recognizing the growing popularity of podcasting, PERC will launch targeted campaigns on popular platforms like iHeartRadio and The New York Times Podcast Network. These podcasts will air in the spring and late summer, reaching engaged listeners who are receptive to informative content.

advantages of choosing propane.”

Building on the success of their 2023 campaign, which garnered a staggering 338.7 million impressions and drove over 250,000 visits to Propane.com, PERC is taking a data-driven approach in 2024. The centerpiece of the campaign will be video ads targeted at homeowners aged 25-64 residing in C and D counties. These ads will air on connected TV (CTV) and YouTube platforms, reaching viewers in the comfort of their living rooms and on their favorite devices.

Leveraging the Power of Live Sports

Recognizing the enduring popularity of live sports, PERC is strategically placing ads during the highly anticipated Summer Olympics in Paris. This approach capitalizes on the unique ability of live sports to bring people together and forge a sense of community. As Axios aptly stated in January 2024, “Live TV events — especially sports — are the only thing left that can draw huge swaths of Americans together at the same time.”

The Paris Olympics, expected to be the largest sporting event of the year, presents a golden opportunity to reach a massive audience. PERC’s ads will run across all time slots – daytime, weekends, primetime and late night – ensuring maximum exposure throughout the Olympic trials in June and the Games themselves in July. PERC estimates their Olympic campaign will reach an impressive 79.9 million viewers.

Print media remains a powerful tool, and PERC will leverage the reach of Southern Living magazine, a publication boasting 7.2 million readers. This strategic placement allows PERC to target homeowners in a trusted and familiar format.

Social media, the ubiquitous force in modern communication, plays a central role in PERC’s strategy. Engaging content will be disseminated across platforms like Facebook and Instagram, reaching an estimated 18.7 million users nationwide and 935,000 users in Texas alone.

As the stage is set for PERC’s expansive and innovative campaign to illuminate the virtues of propane across the nation, the convergence of strategic targeting and multi-channel dissemination promises to herald a new era of consumer awareness and engagement. During the exciting Summer Olympics in Paris, PERC’s message will reach millions of people. Through the lens of live sports, the airwaves of podcasts, the pages of trusted publications, and the vast expanse of social media, PERC’s commitment to informing and empowering consumers underscores propane’s pivotal role in the energy landscape.

A Message for Texas Propane Industry

For Texas propane company owners and managers, PERC’s national campaign presents a significant opportunity. The increased visibility of propane will undoubtedly generate consumer interest, and PERC encourages Texas propane companies to be prepared to capitalize on this momentum.

Reaching Millions: The Power of Partnership

One of the most powerful aspects of ProCOT’s campaign lies in its partnership with PERC, which offers a remarkable 2-for-1 match for every dollar invested. This partnership not only maximizes ProCOT’s impact but also underscores the strength of collaboration within the propane industry. By leveraging PERC’s support, ProCOT is able to extend its reach further, ensuring that the benefits and advantages of propane are communicated effectively to a diverse audience across Texas.

A Multifaceted Approach: Targeting Key Audiences

ProCOT’s Texas campaign will utilize a multifaceted approach to reach audiences where they are, ensuring maximum visibility and engagement. Commercials will air on a diverse array of network channels, news stations, sports channels, and lifestyle networks, channels like FOX, ABC, NBC, CNN, CNBC, ESPN, Discovery and National Geographic. By tapping into a wide range of programming, ProCOT aims to connect with viewers during their favorite shows and events, embedding propane’s message into the fabric of their daily lives.

Looking Ahead: Driving Propane Forward

As we look ahead to the summer months, the synergy between PERC’s national campaign and ProCOT’s Texas campaign sets the stage for a powerful narrative of innovation, sustainability, and progress within the propane industry. Together, we are poised to educate, inspire, and empower audiences across the nation, including the Lone Star State, driving propane forward as a clean, reliable, and efficient energy solution for generations to come.

PERC Recognized Instructor Training Session

June 18–19, 2024 · Dallas, TX

The Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) Education Program (PEP) is available now, fulfilling industrywide training needs. PEP is functionbased, modular, and customizable, catering to marketers, employees, and others.

Starting at the end of 2024, PERC will begin phasing out the Certified Employee Training Program (CETP) and transitioning to PEP. This shift, starting in 2025, moves away from a one-size-fits-all approach, focusing more on specific job skills for safer performance.

PEP retains all key information from CETP but breaks it into smaller, modulebased learning paths, customizable to your company's needs. Instructors can utilize PEP materials, but PEP-Recognized status, including the ability to issue CEUs, requires successful completion of a Trainthe-Trainer session.

PERC is offering five in-person training sessions for propane industry trainers to

A refreshing respite awaits weekend warriors at Lake Conroe, as an innovative ice cream pontoon sets sail, offering a tantalizing array of frozen treats, sodas and more amidst the shimmering waves.

Prompted by their childhood memories and the desire for a cool treat on a scorching summer day at Lake Conroe Park, Ryan and Brittney Stirpe embarked on a journey to bring back the nostalgic charm of the ice cream truck. As stated on their website, “The idea of an Ice Cream Boat began on a hot summer day while we were sitting at Lake Conroe Park, wishing we had a sweet treat to enjoy and reminiscing about the days when the Ice Cream Truck would drive by our house as kids. The sound of the truck in the distance would send us running to get money from our parents so we could get a Bomb Pop or an Ice Cream Sandwich to help cool us off.” With this inspiration driving them forward, they delved into research, uncovering a surprising absence of ice cream boats in Texas, despite their popularity in states like Florida and Michigan. Thus, they embarked on a daring business venture.

In March, the Stirpes unfurled the sails of The Original Conroe Ice Cream Boat, setting forth to dispense prepackaged frozen treats, snacks, and beverages across Lake Conroe’s expanse, nestled an hour north of Houston. True to its moniker, the vessel of choice—a 20-foot Bennington pontoon—captivates locals and tourists, making port

at Party Cove, Ayers Island, and various other popular lakeside hubs.

Their vessel, once a humble pontoon procured from Texas Marine, underwent a metamorphosis, with conventional seating replaced by two Insignia deep freezers, capable of housing approximately 1,000 frozen delights sourced from esteemed brands like Blue Bunny and Popsicle.

They equipped the boat with a 4500-watt Westinghouse Dual Fuel Generator to power the two freezers.

“We chose this option for a number of reasons, primarily the efficiency of propane versus gas, which allows the generator to run significantly quieter,” Ryan said. “We also love that the exhaust fumes from propane are fairly nonexistent. The generator sits on the back of the boat, and we regularly have customers asking how we run the freezers because they don’t see, hear, or smell the generator.”

They use a 30-pound tank, having one on the boat and one in storage as backup. So far, they’ve been going through about one tank a month, but that includes some rainout days, so they anticipate that

going up in the hotter summer months.

“This will work to our advantage because the propane option is cheaper, cleaner, and easier than powering the generator with gasoline.”

With the onset of summer, the Stirpes anticipate peddling upwards of 200 to 300 frozen treats daily.

with PURPOSE Lake Conroe Ice Cream Boat Keeps Cold With Propane

Clad in matching attire and straw hats, the couple orchestrates their aquatic escapades with precision, employing a systematic approach to streamline customer service. Ryan assumes the helm of order-taking and transactions, while Brittney bestows patrons with their delectable delights. Months of rehearsal have honed their efficiency, a necessity in the unforgiving summer rush. Their synchronized efforts extend to navigation, with customers tracking the vessel’s movements via a live tracker, ensuring no sweet seeker is left adrift.
