R-MC Celebrates a Successful Capital Campaign

President’s Message Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends: The successful conclusion of our overwhelmingly beneficial Building Extraordinary campaign on December 31, 2015 is clearly one of the highlights of my now 10-plus years at Randolph-Macon College.

The seven-year campaign took the College and its students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents and friends— all of whom care deeply about this place—on a compelling and engaging journey: – from a campus that had served its constituents well to one that, after a nearly $80 million investment, is even more beautiful and welcoming and serves today’s students and faculty alike.

– from a College that has always endeavored to support its students with financial assistance to one that now has an additional $15 million in endowed scholarships.

– from an institution that can give even more tangible support to the research and teaching of our outstanding faculty with the creation of five new endowed professorships and significantly more faculty program support.

– from a place known for its pre-medical training to one where students vie for slots in our acclaimed Wornom Fellows Program and can now attain early admission at premier medical schools.

– from a College where our splendid and highly effective Bassett Internship program has been enhanced by even more such opportunities for our students, both paid and for credit, thanks to the involvement of invested alumni.

– from a rank of “average” in alumni participation (the percentage of alumni who make a gift to the college) to a level of “extraordinary” where only 15 other schools in the country can claim a higher level of alumni engagement in this way.

Just reflect on this statement: Randolph-Macon College is number 16 in the nation in alumni loyalty.

This journey took me all around the state, region, country and even internationally, during which time I had the great pleasure of talking about our most recent programs, buildings and, especially, our faculty and student achievement. And it gave me the opportunity to hear from alumni and retired faculty who regaled me with stories about their time at Randolph-Macon.

The growing pride among the Yellow Jacket family grew more palpable with each passing year of the campaign.

And for me, the successes of the campaign simply reinforced what I have always known: that Randolph-Macon College is a superb place with a long tradition of providing a fabulous liberal arts education and with an equally strong commitment to our mission of developing the whole student. I like to say that we have a great tradition, but we are not tradition-bound. Advances in our excellent study abroad program (which celebrated its 40-year anniversary during the campaign), our superb student research program (the Schapiro Undergraduate Research Fellowship, which celebrates 20 years this summer), the development of recent initiatives such as six new majors (already attracting 182 students this year) and our increasing significant Edge program are just a few examples demonstrating that we are not standing still. We cannot stand still.

And that is the essential lesson we take away as this campaign closes: to make it ultimately successful, we have to keep on building extraordinarily.

The urgency of our charge to maintain a quality liberal arts educational experience while thinking intentionally about what happens to our graduates when they leave is unrelenting. Your continued support of our important endeavor is more significant than ever – and even more deeply appreciated.

More than 500 of R-MC’s most generous alumni and friends gathered on February 19, 2016 for

a gala dinner at the Brock Sports and Recreation Center to celebrate the tremendous success of Building Extraordinary, the most ambitious campaign in the College’s history.

Through toasts given by faculty, students and staff, and the remarks of Campaign Chair Macon F. Brock Jr. ’64, Board of trustees Chair Alan B. Rashkind ’69 and others, guests were reminded of the extraordinary accomplishments realized from the campaign and achieved through the generosity of over 12,000 donors.

A Successful Campaign The $100 million campaign was launched in 2008 and concluded on December 31, 2015 with an astounding $125 million in gifts and commitments. During the gala celebration, President Lindgren thanked those who participated, stating, “Your incredible support is literally changing the face of Randolph-Macon.”

Lindgren noted that these gifts “enable the main event here at Randolph-Macon: the success of our talented and enthusiastic students.”

He concluded the evening looking toward the future and predicting that the R-MC community will continue to rise, with a commitment to make “Randolph-Macon College even better for future generations.”

Birdsong Hall, a residential facility for upperclassmen, was named for benefactors Thomas Birdsong ’49 and The Birdsong Corporation, who made a lead gift of $2.1 million. The Birdsongs have a longstanding tradition of philanthropy with Randolph-Macon. The family and corporation also made significant gifts in support of Brock Commons and the new science building.

ALUMNI WHO MADE AT LEAST ONE GIFT TO THE CAMPAIGN

A priority of the campaign was to grow the College’s endowment. The number of new endowed scholarships that were created or enhanced reached 160, totaling gift commitments of $15.5 million. Five new professorships were established and two were increased to support “the teacherscholars who come to this campus each and every day, laser-focused, first and foremost, on the question of how to best help their students be successful,” remarked President Lindgren.

Gift commitments of $52.5 million transformed the campus with the construction of the Janet Harvey trivette ’78 Walkway, Andrews Hall, Brock Commons, Birdsong Hall, the John B. Werner Library Pavilion and a new Theta Chi House. In addition, Fox Hall and Haley Hall were renovated, and the generosity of Beverley and A. Douglas Dalton Jr. ’70 allowed the College to acquire Dalton House, a home for alumni.

Gifts such as those from Peter Rippe and Maria Wornom Rippe are being used to enhance academic programs and support faculty. The Wornom-Rippe Faculty endowment offsets the costs associated with attracting and recruiting outstanding new faculty. Further, with the help of generous donors like Ray and Carol Martin, funding became available to offer a new engineering physics major. other new academic majors include: behavioral neuroscience, communication studies, archaeology, Asian studies, and a separate business major.

Leadership Hitting the Ground Running When Lindgren started his job on February 1, 2006 as R-MC’s 15th president, he hit the ground running. He began by meeting with faculty, staff, students and key internal and external groups to gain a deeper understanding of the campus culture. He also started a unique tradition of inviting all freshmen, in small groups, to his home for dessert and conversation during their first semester.

President of the Student Government Association talbot Weston ’16 says, “President Lindgren has left an indelible mark on the college. His forward-thinking has transformed our campus.

Randolph-Macon College is home to me, and I thank President Lindgren for making it an extraordinary place.”

Lindgren has been a strong supporter of R-MC’s faculty and the academic programs. “The transformation of our college over the last decade has been phenomenal,” says Provost and Physics Professor William t. Franz. “While others in our sector have stood still or even retrenched, Randolph-Macon has been charging ahead aggressively. new construction, new programs, new enthusiasm— all have contributed to an even better educational experience for our students. It has been my distinct pleasure to be a partner with President Lindgren during this time.”

Lindgren’s desire to meet alumni prompted the college to work toward engaging them with their alma mater in unique ways. From fireside chats to large gatherings, Lindgren talked to alumni about their memories and experiences and welcomed their suggestions for the future of R-MC. He then led the college through a new Master

10

Plan and Strategic Plan, which were used as a foundation upon which to build a $100 million campaign, Building Extraordinary.

At the same time, he has waved the R-MC banner through his active participation with business and community organizations and by serving and leading national and statewide higher education boards, including the Governor’s Commission on Higher education.

A Transformational Presidency Under Lindgren’s leadership, R-MC has enjoyed a renaissance and extraordinary success—including surpassing its campaign goal and wrapping up with $125 million in gifts and commitments at its conclusion on December 31, 2015, a milestone for the college.

Since his arrival, enrollment at R-MC is up by 26 percent as the college has welcomed its largest incoming classes in history. As a part of its strategic plan, the college also developed The Edge, a four-year personalized, comprehensive program, integrated with students’ academic experience to give them a competitive advantage with their career or graduate school goals.

“From his first moments on campus, Bob began building a stronger sense of community by cultivating meaningful relationships with our students, faculty, staff and alumni,” says Alan B. Rashkind ’69, chair of the Board of trustees. “In addition to being known as ‘the students’ president,’ he has also become known as ‘the alumni’s president.’ A record 40 percent of our alumni give to the college, making Randolph-Macon first in Virginia and 16th

in the nation among all private and public colleges in alumni support. Those numbers are just one testament among many available to document that Bob’s has been a transformational presidency in every sense of that word.”

That Lindgren shepherded the college through a decade of national recession while increasing enrollment and leading a record-breaking Building Extraordinary campaign is nothing short of remarkable, adds Rashkind. But Lindgren is not surprised. “It is the incredible support of alumni, students, faculty and staff that has changed the face of Randolph-Macon,” he explains. “The generosity of the R-MC community guarantees that future generations will benefit from the outstanding educational experience we provide.”

A Profound Difference The opportunity to help sustain R-MC’s future is what lured Lindgren away from a distinguished career of serving presidents and leading development programs at the University of Florida and The Johns Hopkins Institutions. “I believed then, as I do now, that Randolph-Macon can make a profound difference in the development of an individual student. I often say to prospective students and families that the quality of the educational experience provided here for undergraduates, and at liberal arts colleges just like RandolphMacon, is the very best there is right now in this country.” In his 10 years as president, Lindgren has welcomed more than 2,700 seniors into the ranks of alumni, over a quarter of the college’s living alumni.

Looking Ahead Lindgren doesn’t spend much time looking back; his gaze is very much on the future. At the Campaign celebration in February, he commented that when the third volume of the college’s history is written, it will focus on the era of the Building Extraordinary campaign and the generosity of those who positioned Randolph-Macon for a greater future. But more importantly, he stressed, “Whatever we have accomplished up until now is not as important, not as significant, not as consequential, as what we do next, as the chapters to come. I hope they will say that this robust community of Randolph-Macon in 2016, after smashing through a magnificent campaign goal, after hitting these heretofore

unreachable numbers, continued to rise with a commitment to making the college even better for future generations. We will do that with more scholarships, more professorships, better facilities, and an unwavering dedication to providing a complete liberal arts education accompanied by an intentional focus on what happens to our students after they graduate.”

Lindgren and his wife Cheryl consider it a privilege to have landed at Randolph-Macon. “every day we witness professors coming to campus laser-focused, first and foremost, on how best to help students be successful, and they pour their hearts and souls into doing just that. And we see caring staff keeping this campus looking beautiful and working efficiently; who fix our computers and recruit students, all the while keeping them safe, motivated and fed; and who mold our Yellow Jackets into the fiercest competitors in the oDAC. We are blessed with extraordinary—in every sense of that word—alumni generosity and greatly assisted by the visionary leadership of our Board of trustees. Most importantly, we are privileged to be surrounded by wonderful students in whose presence it is impossible not to be optimistic about the future.”

A new science building just under construction, a 10-year accreditation process to be completed in 2018, a new strategic plan, and even more fund raising all remain in the immediate future of the 15th president.

An Extraordinary Family In addition to being a college president, Lindgren is a dedicated husband and father.

Cheryl Lindgren has been a valuable partner and is essential to the success of the Lindgren presidency. Rashkind observes, “She is gracious and kind and opens both her home and heart to everyone who visits, with the warmest smile and charming southern hospitality.”

When the Lindgrens arrived on campus in 2006, they brought their three school-age children with them. over the years, the R-MC community has watched the Lindgren children grow up. twenty-five-year-old Jim is now married and he and his wife, Sierre, reside in Ashland. twenty-one-year-old Greg is a third-year student at the University of Virginia, studying history and economics. Sixteen-year-old Andrea is at Ashland’s Patrick Henry High School, where she plays lacrosse and is an accomplished equestrian at nearby Haverhill Farm. And Callie, an energetic one-year-old Golden Retriever, is the new top dog at the Lindgren house. n

This hands-on workshop, facilitated by The Edge Career Center and more than 100 alumni and other business leaders, took place February 5-6, 2016 at the Westin Richmond Hotel. The Edge is a comprehensive, four-year career preparation program that provides students with a competitive advantage with their career or graduate school goals.

The weekend was devoted to helping students develop their own elevator speech and “brand,” learn how to communicate with confidence, and identify their strengths and capabilities—all with the help of top-notch speakers and mentors, including alumni. This year, 129 students participated in Boot Camp.

FINDINg thE EDGE Participants attended workshops, practiced the essentials of businessdining etiquette at a formal dinner, and formulated an “action plan” for career success. Breakout sessions included “tell Your Story,” “Communication Styles,” and “Your Best Interview.” Business leaders from several companies, including Momentum, circle S studio and BB&t, were on hand to offer students career advice and share their business acumen, and alumni served as interviewers in a simulated-interview program. A closing reception offered students the opportunity to put into practice their networking skills. Cindy Szadokierski ’81, executive director of The Edge, says Boot Camp continues to grow and flourish.

“This year’s event was better than ever,” says Szadokierski. “our students learned from the best, polished their professional skills and realized the importance of networking. Exploring the World INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION WEEK It was a week filled with discovery as R-MC celebrated International education Week (IeW) november 16-20, 2015. This campus-wide event had something for everyone, as participants explored and celebrated cultural diversity. Films, lectures, special foods: all were part of the college’s homage to IeW. The office of International education partnered with other departments and with student groups for IeW, the theme of which was Disasters Happen: Response, Relief & Recovery.

At a reception in the Dalton House, the newly established Barbara S. Doggett French Fellowship Fund was unveiled. January term (J-term) is a month unlike any other. Students can travel, do an internship, conduct research, or immerse themselves in on-campus courses.

Travel Time

R-MC’s J-term study-travel classes began in 1964 with one faculty member and nine students visiting Germany. During J-term 2016, 109 students packed their bags and discovered the world. Courses included Critique and Comparison of American Public education Policy in Japan; Literary London and the History of england to 1688; and Afro-Cuban Culture, History and Society. In all, students could choose to travel to nine different countries, including Cuba.

Anne cabell Birdsong Pearce

Pearce graduated from Mary Baldwin College with a degree in business management. She then completed Barnett Bank’s Management training Program and became a relationship banker in Florida. Pearce continued her banking career in Virginia as a personal banker through the mergers of Virginia national Bank, Sovran Bank, and nations Bank. She later joined Birdsong Peanuts in Suffolk, Virginia, where she worked in international/domestic sales support. Pearce joined the R-MC Parents Board in 2014 and currently serves as chair.

Mary Lynn reed, esq. ’80

Reed is senior counsel in the office of the Senior Vice President and General Counsel of the George Washington University (GW) in Washington, D.C., where she focuses primarily on legal issues arising out of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, School of nursing, and School of Public Health. Reed recently coordinated with GW and Randolph-Macon to finalize an early selection agreement that provides guaranteed admission to GW Medical School for students who meet eligibility requirements.

She finalized a similar agreement between R-MC and the GW School of nursing.

Reed graduated from R-MC with a degree in political science and earned her J.D. degree from Georgetown University Law Center.

Susan P. Quinn ’80

Quinn is president and Ceo of circle S studio in Richmond, Virginia. She has become a trusted ally to C-level executives from Fortune 500 companies to growing regional firms. After starting her career in the retail-banking sector, Quinn founded her own marketing communications company in 1985. In 1999 she and two other professionals created circle S studio, a strategic marketing and design firm. Quinn graduated from Randolph-Macon with a degree in political science and serves as chair of the college’s Board of Associates.

Kesler Lecture Features Becky Ann Baker and Dylan Baker R-MC presented its third annual Kesler Lecture March 10, 2016. An enthusiastic audience listened as actor Becky Ann Baker and actor-director Dylan Baker shared their reflections on theatre careers. Prior to the lecture a group of drama students met with the Bakers for a workshop in Cobb Theatre. The event was sponsored by the Jackson and Betty Kesler endowment for Guest Artists in Theatre.

Becky Ann Baker is best known for her portrayal of Jean Weir on nBC’s emmy Award-winning “Freaks and Geeks” and for her role on HBo’s emmy Awardwinning “Girls.”

Dylan Baker is known for his work in “Spider-Man 2,” “trick ‘r treat” and “Spider-Man 3.” His Broadway theatre credits include God of Carnage.

About The Jackson and Betty Kesler Endowment for Guest Artists in Theatre: Jackson Kesler is a member of the r-MC Class of 1959. The Kesler endowment was created in 2011 and is used by the Theatre arts program to broaden students’ exposure to theatre as a profession. The endowment makes funds available for guest theatrical artists and professionals to visit campus for the purpose of lectures, seminars, demonstrations and/or master classes.

emerson joined the staff of the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation in 1986 as director of public affairs and marketing; he was appointed executive director of the organization in 1991. As Ceo of the Foundation, emerson has guided more than $160 million in capital improvements for its museums and educational programs. Prior to joining the Foundation, emerson was manager of public affairs and marketing at The Mariners’ Museum. Jen Cadwallader Author of New Book

english Professor Jen Cadwallader is the author of Spirits and Spirituality in Victorian Fiction (Palgrave Macmillan, 2016).

“In the book, I argue that supernatural encounters in nineteenth-century fiction show Victorians trying to achieve greater spiritual agency by adapting scientific theories to traditional Christianity,” explains Cadwallader. She also examines ghost encounters in the fiction of Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, Charles Dickens, Rhoda Broughton, and Rudyard Kipling.

Cadwallader teaches Victorian literature and

children’s literature, plus two courses that draw directly on her research: Midnight tales, a survey of the horror genre, and The Gothic tradition, a capstone course for english majors.

Cadwallader joined the faculty in 2009. She earned her B.A. from Alfred University and her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of north Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Alumna and Professor Contribute Book Chapters Carlie Pendleton ’13 and History Professor Anne Throckmorton were invited to contribute chapters to a book that will offer a scholarly critique of Showtime’s “The tudors,” a historical fiction television series set in sixteenth-century england.

The book, “The Tudors,” Sex, Politics, and Power: History, Fiction, and Artistic License in the Showtime Television Series, is part of the “Queenship and Power” series and will be published by Palgrave MacMillan. Pendleton and Throckmorton were asked to contribute to the book after meeting its editor, Professor William Robison, when he lectured at R-MC in 2014. Pendleton’s chapter focuses on the english Reformation, and Throckmorton’s chapter highlights the depictions in “The tudors” of Henry VIII’s revolving door of in-laws.

Throckmorton, who joined the faculty in 2008, earned her B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. She also earned an M.A. from emerson College. Pendleton, who majored in history, is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Modern British and european History at University of oxford.

Rosanna Lauriola Contributes Chapters to Book Honors Program Adjunct Professor Rosanna Lauriola contributed four chapters to a book on the reception of euripides’ tragedies. Brill’s Companion to the Reception of Euripides (Brill, 2015) provides a comprehensive account of the influence and appropriation of all extant euripidean plays since their inception. Lauriola also designed and co-edited the book.

Greek tragedy, she explains, includes an expansive repertoire of aspects of human life traceable throughout centuries and in different areas of knowledge.

“This allows a multifaceted analysis and, consequently, may provide a layered enlightenment on the human condition,” says Lauriola, who earned her B.A. and M.A. at University of Pisa and her Ph.D. at University of Firenze.

April Marchetti ’97 Awarded nSF Grant

April Marchetti ’97, the Garnett-Lambert endowed Professor in Chemistry, was awarded a grant from the national Science Foundation. The five-year, $1,199,276 grant is the largest single grant in the history of R-MC. The grant will support a project entitled “The Randolph-Macon College noyce teacher/ Scholar Program - A Program Designed to Recruit, train, and Support Well-Qualified Chemistry, Biology, and Physics teachers.” The grant will fund several initiatives.

It will establish a program that will provide 16-18 full scholarships to students pursuing a SteM (Science, technology, engineering and Mathematics) major in conjunction with an education minor. The grant will also fund 12-week internships at Maymont Park, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, and the Science Museum of Virginia. In addition, it will support the development of one-week science day camps for 5th graders and middle-school students.

Marchetti, who earned her B.S. from R-MC and her Ph.D. from The Pennsylvania State University, joined the faculty in 2001.

Brian Sutton Wins Prize for Poster

Mathematics Professor Brian Sutton won a prize at the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics Conference on Applied Linear Algebra, held october 28, 2015 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Sutton won a prize for Best Poster Blitz Presentation. Before the poster session, each presenter had one minute to introduce his or her poster to the assembly of conference participants. The title of Sutton’s poster was Computing Geodesic Rotations.

As he explains, “The mathematical problem is the following: Given a collection of ‘linear spaces’—lines, planes or hyperplanes—find the most efficient rotation to move them into a desired configuration. The solution method is proved correct on paper and leads to computer code allowing anyone to compute an efficient rotation without understanding the inner workings.”

Sutton joined the faculty in 2005. He earned bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and computer science at Virginia tech and a Ph.D. at the Massachusetts Institute of technology.

Patricia reagan receives Mednick Award

Spanish Professor Patricia Reagan is the recipient of a fellowship award from the Mednick Fellowship Committee of the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges (VFIC). Founded in 1952, the VFIC is a non-profit fundraising partnership supporting the programs and students of 15 leading independent colleges in the Commonwealth.

The award will fund research on Reagan’s latest book, Destination Nemesis: The United States as Antagonist in Films of Latino Immigration (2001-2016). The book will analyze recent films about unauthorized Latino immigration and the portrayal of the United States in these films.

Reagan, who joined the faculty in 2008, earned her B.A. from Hood College and her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. Her research focuses in 20th Century Latin American Literature and Culture, and Latino Immigration. She is the author of Deconstructing Paradise: Inverted Religious Symbolism in Contemporary Latin American Literature (Lexington Books, Forthcoming, July 2016) and The Postmodern Storyteller: Donoso, García Márquez and Vargas Llosa (Lexington Books, 2012). n

n Carrie Winkler Crooks ’00 Women’s Lacrosse

Crooks was a four-year letter-winner, two-time All-American, three-time All-Region and four-time All-oDAC selection. She led R-MC to its first oDAC title in 2000 and first nCAA tournament berth. At the time of her induction, Crooks was second in program history with 304 career points, third with 213 career goals, fourth with 143 draw controls and fifth with 91 career assists.

n Bobby goulder ’61 Baseball

Goulder was a four-year letter winner, a captain in 1961 and part of two championship teams. He led the Yellow Jackets in hitting in three seasons and batted .325 during his career. Goulder was All-MasonDixon Conference in 1960 and 1961. He played one year of professional baseball for the Wytheville twins in the Minnesota twins organization. School for 10 years and served as athletic director at Colonial Heights High School.

n John Graham ’56 Football

Graham was an A.P. Little All-American in 1955 and helped the Yellow Jackets win the Mason-Dixon Conference championship in 1952 and 1955. Following his time at R-MC, Graham served as USA team Manager for the national Wrestling team.

He worked the 1988 olympics in Seoul and the 1996 olympics in Atlanta, as well as multiple World Championships. He is a member of the Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame and the national Wrestling Hall of Fame.

n Charlie Nuttycombe ’56 Football, Track, Basketball

nuttycombe played three years of football and was a senior co-captain. He was also a running back and kick returner, earning Second team All-Little Seven honors. He played one year of basketball and was a member of the track team for

three years. nuttycombe was Mason-Dixon Conference champion in the 100-yard dash, 200-yard dash and broad jump. He was a teacher and coach at newport news High School and Menchville High School for more than 30 years.

n Sweeney Shiflett ’53 Football, Baseball

Shiflett helped the football team win a pair of Mason-Dixon Conference titles. He was an Honorable Mention All-American Linebacker, All-Little Six First team on Defense and Honorable Mention on offense, and All-Little Six Fullback.

Shiflett lettered four years in football and three years in baseball. He helped the baseball team win a Mason-Dixon Conference crown in 1952. He spent 28 years in the Warren County Public School System as a teacher, coach and athletic director. At Warren County High School, the Lawrence M. “Sweeney” Shiflett Hall of Fame was founded in 2002 and he was the first inductee. n 23

Jessica Weiss Named Field Hockey Coach R-MC welcomes Jessica Weiss as the new head coach for the field hockey program.

For the past seven seasons, Weiss was an assistant coach at Christopher newport University. The Captains earned five nCAA tournament appearances, reached the Sweet 16 twice and advanced to the Final Four once. Weiss coached nine All-Americans, 20 All-Region selections, 32 All-State honorees, 12 All-Conference performers, 23 All-Academic players and 10 Senior All-Stars. Weiss also coordinated CnU’s recruiting efforts and assisted in fundraising.

Since 2010, Weiss has worked with the Stick Power Field Hockey Club in newport news, serving as club goalkeeper coach and financial manager. She was the head coach of the U16 and U19 teams at USA Field Hockeysanctioned events.

In addition, she was an assistant women’s lacrosse coach at CnU from 2008-12. The Captains won three USA South championships and made three appearances in the nCAA tournament.

Weiss played field hockey (2004-07) and lacrosse (2006-08) at Susquehanna University. She earned a B.S. in business administration in 2008 and was a dean’s list honoree and member of Alpha Lambda Delta and order of omega.

Following graduation, Weiss was an assistant field hockey coach at Susquehanna in fall 2008.

Along with her coaching duties, Weiss is working toward a Master of education degree in sport leadership at Virginia Commonwealth University. She plans to complete her work in spring 2017.

Weiss replaces Crystal Carper, who resigned following 11 seasons as head coach of the Yellow Jackets. Carper compiled 102 victories and led R-MC to six winning campaigns over the past seven years.

Football Finishes Strong, Looks Forward to 2016 The football team won its final three games of 2015, including a dramatic 14-9 victory over Hampden-Sydney in front of 6,227 frenzied fans in the season finale. The Yellow Jackets have tamed the tigers two straight times and in four out of the past five meetings.

Quarterback Joe McBride ’19 scored on a two-yard run, and J.J. Hill ’19 picked off a pass and ran it in from 31 yards out as the Yellow Jackets took a 14-0 lead with 8:06 remaining in the first period.

H-SC had a field goal in the first quarter and a touchdown in the second to trail 14-9. The tigers drove to the R-MC 1 late in the second quarter, but a lost fumble thwarted the drive.

The visitors missed a 27-yard field goal in the third period. Later in the third, the tigers drove to the R-MC 31. Hill picked off a pass in the end zone to halt the drive. early in the fourth, H-SC moved to the R-MC 2. on fourth down, tom Buchanan ’16 tackled the tiger tailback for a loss of six as the Yellow Jackets took over with 10:54 remaining. The tigers had three more possessions, but did not cross midfield as R-MC recorded the 14-9 victory.

Visual Arts Reunion

It was a weekend filled with art as alumni gathered for the Visual Arts Reunion, which was held March 11-12, 2016. Sponsored by the Arts council, the event brought together more than 60 alumni and friends. To kick off the weekend, participants gathered for an opening reception at richmond’s Try-me Artspace, an urban restoration project offering innovative space for artists and art educators.

On campus, art aficionados attended lectures by professors Evie Terrono (art history) and ray Berry (studio arts), the latter of whom reprised a long-time favorite class, Zen and creativity/Artistic Problems. In addition, attendees enjoyed a visual-arts tour of the campus.

A highlight of the reunion was an art show opening in Flippo Gallery that featured the works of cheryl dillard ’91, Mitchell Johnson ’86, duane Keiser ’88, nathan King ’02, don Lewis ’70, Alan ramsey ’96, Stacey Salazar ’89, Kyle Samperton ’74, Timothy Stotz ’91, Judy West ’83, and Jeremy Witt ’92. A reunion dinner capped off the weekend.

From Intern to Mentor

adison Moore Brown ’11 knew from a very young age that she wanted a medical career.

At R-MC, the Waverly, Virginia, native took the prerequisite courses she knew she would eventually need for physician assistant school, but she focused on human behavior and the brain. “I knew that the hardest part of healthcare is forming a good rapport with patients,” she explains. “Through my psychology major—with an emphasis on neuroscience—I was able to learn how to effectively build those relationships.”

“The best advice that I received at R-MC was to take every opportunity that comes your way,” says Brown. A dedicated Yellow Jacket, Brown was a member of Phi Mu Fraternity, a student worker at the Health Center and a traveler with an eye toward community service. During her sophomore year, she took a service-learning trip to Guatemala, where she and her classmates built stoves for impoverished families.

Brown credits Psychology Professor Kelly Lambert for fueling her interest in neuroscience. At Lambert’s suggestion, Brown did an internship at the Center for neurorehabilitation Services (CnS) in Richmond, Virginia. That experience set the stage for her career. After graduation, she was offered a job in the Center’s clinic, and several years later she graduated from eastern Virginia Medical School’s Physician Assistant program. After passing the PA boards in 2015, she rejoined the team at CnS as a physician assistant.

“I would have never had so many opportunities without the help of R-MC,” says Moore, who tells new Yellow Jackets to sink their teeth into everything the college offers. “take a variety of classes,” she advises. “Also, make as many connections as possible with your peers and professors; it will pay off. Recently, for example, I mentored R-MC students through the J-term internship program. The Yellow Jacket connection is amazing.” n

Doug Colonel

A Force of nature “During my first semester, it became clear that I needed to pick up the pace,

or I wasn’t going to succeed at R-MC,” confesses Doug Colonel ’66, a new Richmond, ohio, native. “on top of being unprepared for the academic challenges,” he jokes, “it was obvious that my wardrobe and social skills also needed improvement.”

Colonel, a psychology major and member of Lambda Chi Alpha and the football team, learned to thrive at R-MC. “Thanks to wonderful faculty, coaches and peers, I became a real member of the student body,” he says.

After graduating, Colonel longed to work outdoors and live out West, but instead settled into a career at the Department of energy laboratory in Idaho. That changed in 1990.

“I had an epiphany,” he explains. “I knew I had to make something happen.” Colonel and his wife sold their home and bought a lodge in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, near Grand teton national Park. Colonel began operating educational float trips on the Snake River, later adding boat shuttles and scenic tours on Jenny Lake to his repertoire.

Several years ago, President Lindgren was in Jackson Hole for a conference, and he and Colonel met at Jenny Lake.

“He helped me realize how important R-MC is to me,” recalls Colonel. In 2015 Jack Luck ’64 visited Colonel and encouraged him to see the changes that had taken place on campus.

“Shortly thereafter, Rick Golembeski ’96 visited me,” says Colonel. “His enthusiasm for Wyoming was exceeded only by his commitment to R-MC. When he left, I told myself that I would get back to Ashland.” Since those fateful encounters, Colonel has become reacquainted with the college and people who laid the cornerstone for his life.

Colonel now owns lodges in Wyoming and Idaho, rafting and tour boat companies in Jackson Hole, and a fly-fishing lodge in Patagonia, Argentina.

“I’m happy to again be an active member of the R-MC family,” he says. “equally important: I have begun to contribute to the advancement of Randolph-Macon. It feels right to do so, and I challenge others who are in a ‘similar boat’ to do the same. Go Jackets!” n

Ted Keller ’53 Endowed Football Fund Established

on January 29, 2016 Randolph-Macon College held a signing ceremony at the Hall of Fame wall in the Brock Center, honoring the creation of the Ted Keller ’53 endowed Fund for football.

The fund honors long-time head coach and athletic administrator ted Keller. Tom Harleman ’71 signed the endowment agreement with President Lindgren. Harleman represented donors as well as the committee for the Decade of the 1960s Football Reunion, which consisted of Harleman, Tony Sala ’70, Joe McCue ’70, John Peters ’70, Walt Zyglocke ’70, Doug Moyer ’70 and Bobby Haurand ’71.

Alumni Receive Entrepreneur Awards The Board of Associates presented its entrepreneur Achievement Award to three alumni January 21, 2016 at the Country Club of Virginia. The award recognizes alumni who transform a vision into a viable, sustainable enterprise.

Executive of the Year: Linwood “Woody” Staub ’84

President, Chief Operating Officer and Board Member, Soluble Systems Staub, who has spent 30 years in the medical device industry, is president and chief operating officer of Soluble Systems, a biotech company focused on commercializing regenerative therapies for chronic wounds. Prior to this, he built and sold two start-up ventures: CMJ Medical and SSn Partners. Staub began his career with Johnson & Johnson. He has extensive experience internationally, including six years in tokyo and three years in London serving as general manager of the J&J Wound Management/Bio-surgical division. Staub is also a member of the R-MC Board of trustees.

Young Entrepreneur of the Year: Dean Browell ’98

Executive Vice President, Feedback In 2009 Browell formed Feedback with ad industry veteran Jeff Thompson to the benefit of marketing and public relations professionals around the world. Browell leads Feedback’s social media charge with a passion for how generations interact online. Browell has an academic zeal for exploration, and has worked with clients such as Mini Cooper and The Martin Agency. A faculty member of the University of Richmond’s Institute on Philanthropy, he is a frequent speaker at international and national events.

Entrepreneur of the Year: Chris Chodnicki ’86

Executive Director, Strategic Partnerships, r2integrated Starting a career at ADP, Chodnicki later founded Bi4ce, a technology firm focused on open-source software gaining worldwide clients including Un, World Bank and IMF. In 2007 he co-founded r2integrated (r2i), combining Bi4ce with a design firm. R2i is a leading national digital agency with 200-plus employees and four offices, and clients include Microsoft, MasterCard, and Hershey’s. Chodnicki leads technical strategy and partnerships.

1971 after serving four years in the U.S. Air Force. Gerhardt taught high school english and coached baseball from 1971-2004 in traverse City, Michigan. Avid MSU fans, the Gerhardts live in Bath, Michigan. Paul Brown retired from the federal government after more than 40 years of service. Thirty-five years were spent at the U.S. Department of education where he served as deputy director and as acting director of the title I, title III, and other federal programs. Last year, he and his wife moved to the Pacific northwest.

PA S S A G e S Jacai Colson ’09 Jacai Colson ’09 was shot and killed in the line of duty in Prince George’s County, Maryland on March 13, 2016.

He was 28 years old. Colson, a four-year veteran of Prince George’s County Police Department, was assigned to the department’s narcotic enforcement Division and had worked as an undercover officer.

At R-MC he majored in business/economics and was actively engaged in all the college offered. Colson traveled to Ghana during J-term, studied the Japanese language, sang in the Ujima Gospel Choir, and volunteered for Habitat for Humanity. In addition, he was a member of the football team and worked in the Admissions office and in the Marketing & Communications Department. He was also a member of Brothers 4 Change, an organization devoted to community service.

In Memoriam: Luther White III ’47 Luther W. White III ’47, who served as the 12th president of R-MC (1967-1979), died January 9, 2016.

White was a history major, member of Phi Delta Theta, and member of the Yellow Jacket baseball team. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from R-MC and graduated cum laude with an LL.B. degree from Washington and Lee University.

Between undergraduate years, he served in the United States navy Reserve and earned the rank of Lieutenant. After graduating from law school, White became a member of the Virginia State Bar and joined the Breeden and Hoffman law firm in norfolk, Virginia. From 1950-52, he served as assistant commonwealth’s attorney for the City of norfolk, after which he re-joined Breeden and Hoffman.

In 1953, White founded the law firm Worthington and White in norfolk, which was later changed to Worthington, White and Harper.

During his tenure at R-MC, a science building, two residence halls and a student center were built; the college also began to accept women as full-time students. White retired as president of R-MC in 1979 and served as president of Kentucky Wesleyan College from 1979-1988. on october 27, 2006, as President Lindgren was officially installed as R-MC’s 15th president, White, along with Roger Martin, the college’s 14th president, placed the presidential medallion over Lindgren’s shoulders. This marked a historic moment for the college, as C. Ladell Payne, R-MC’s 13th president, was also present, making this one of the few times in Randolph-Macon history when four presidents were on stage at the same time.

The Luther White endowed Fund for Personal and Career Development, created in 2012, is funded with the proceeds of a $1 million charitable trust that will be distributed to the college when the trust terminates. This gift, given by an anonymous donor, will help further White’s commitment to help R-MC students prepare for an ever-changing world. n

charlotte Parrish, a beloved member of the r-Mc family, died november 17, 2015. Parrish, who joined the staff in 1995, served as director of events management. She was known for her deep commitment to the college, her sense of humor and her distinguished service.

Walter W. Craigie Jr. Walter W. Craigie Jr. died March 3, 2016, in Richmond, Virginia.

Craigie’s relationship to R-MC goes back to his great-grandfather, a pre-Civil War graduate of the college. In 1983, his father created the Walter W. Craigie teaching and Research Grants. Countless R-MC faculty have benefited from Craigie grants, which sponsor research, teaching and other scholarly activity by providing funds on a competitive basis. In 2007, Craigie and his wife created the Walter W. and Berenice D. Craigie Scholarship. Craigie was a member of the R-MC President’s Society and Heritage Society, and he served as a trustee emeritus since 2005. He was presented an honorary degree by R-MC in 2008.

A retired senior advisor with Morgan Keegan & Company, a regional investment banking, securities brokerage, trust and asset management firm, Craigie served in the executive branch of the Commonwealth of Virginia as treasurer and secretary of finance.

Through the years, Craigie advised governors on financial and budget issues. He was also an appointed member of the Virginia Debt Capacity Advisory committee and served on the Washington Airports task Force Board.

Craigie is survived by his wife, Berenice “Beese” Craigie, daughters Anne and Frances and five grandchildren. n
